But before he could finish, the assistant Finnian had left behind walked in carrying a heart covered in tiny needles.
"Your uncle wanted you to see this first."
Kieran's tears started hitting the white sheets, spreading into wet stains.
"Victoria, I'm such a piece of shit..."
But honestly? I wasn't that broken up about it.
Maybe it was the new heart, or maybe it was touching my flat stomach.
Everything from the past shit just made me feel sick and disgusted.
But not heartbroken. Not anymore.
"Kieran."
Seeing that I'd actually talk to him, Kieran's eyes lit up with hope.
"Victoria, yes! Anything you want! I'll do whatever it takes, just please—"
I waved him off and cut him short:
"Do me a favor and tell the Fairfaxes that Victoria Fairfax isn't their daughter anymore."
Then I settled back into my pillows.
Pure despair washed over Kieran's face.
This six-foot-three guy hunched over like a broken toy. "What about me? You're done with them... are you done with me too?"
I didn't even pause. "Yeah. Completely done."
Over the next month, while Finnian was recovering from his heart surgery,
Kieran ditched all his business and basically lived in my room like some obsessed stalker.
Even with security pointing guns at his head, he wouldn't leave.
Finnian was so pissed he was ready to rip out his own IV and drag himself over here.
Watching him get all worked up, I laughed and tried to calm him down:
"Ignore him. He means absolutely nothing to me now. Just focus on getting healthy so we can have our whole life together."
After hearing that, Kieran looked like he was about to lose it and rushed out to the hallway.
Two seconds later, you could hear him sobbing through the walls.
But I didn't feel anything. Just picked up an orange from my bedside table and started peeling it.
A few minutes later, Kieran came scrambling back.
He knew that once Uncle Finnian was back on his feet, he'd never see me again.
Like he was trying to make up for everything, he didn't complain about anything. But when he saw the orange, he looked confused.
"Wait, don't you love pomegranates? I remember last summer you got that red juice all over your fingers..."
I couldn't help but smirk, shot him a look but didn't say anything.
Then it hit him, and he started mumbling to himself:
"Pomegranates... that was Camille..."
Kieran dropped to his knees:
"Victoria, maybe I've got some twenty-year habits I haven't broken yet, and that's confusing you! But I swear to God, I've only loved you for so long now!"
"You have no idea how destroyed I was when we lost the baby! Even Grandpa kicked me out of the will, that was nothing compared to losing our kid!"
I quietly slid a divorce agreement across to him. "Just sign it."
But Kieran wouldn't give up:
"Believe that I love you and I’ll sign. I'll wait for you to come back. My uncle... he’ll die before I do. Victoria, I'll never marry anyone else. I'll wait for you till I’m eighty. I’ll prove my love’s real! Please, don’t doubt me!"
