When Brooklyn woke up, she found herself locked in the storage warehouse.
The wounds on her back had formed thin scabs that split and burned with every movement. She forced herself to crawl to the door and knocked weakly.
A guard's cold voice came from outside: "Miss Sheridan says you haven't learned your lesson yet. Three more days, no food or water."
He paused, then added, "The boss agreed to it."
Brooklyn slumped against the door and actually laughed.
Of course Alina hates me. I took her life.
Twenty years ago, a hospital mix-up had put Brooklyn in Alina's rightful place as the Sheridan heiress. Alina had grown up in poverty, suffering God knows what while Brooklyn lived in luxury.
When Alina finally came home, Kaiden had refused to let Brooklyn leave. He'd spoiled her rotten, obsessed over her, and Alina couldn't even kick her out of the house.
Now that Kaiden had amnesia and didn't remember his psychotic obsession, Alina finally had her chance for revenge.
Brooklyn leaned against the freezing concrete wall. She didn't fight it or bang on the door again.
Just a few more days. Then I'm gone forever.
No point causing trouble now.
The warehouse had no windows—impossible to tell day from night.
Brooklyn huddled in the corner, too injured to sleep, counting her breaths to pass the time.
Every day, Alina had someone throw in a stack of photos.
Pictures of Kaiden and Karina looking perfect together—
Him with his arm around her waist at charity galas, whispering in her ear;
Him adjusting her dress train like a perfect gentleman;
Him sliding a massive diamond ring onto her finger in front of cameras, pulling her close for a kiss;
On the back of each photo, Alina had scrawled taunts in red ink—
"This is the kind of fiancée my brother deserves."
"What the hell are you?"
"Stop dreaming. He'll never remember you."
Three days later, the warehouse door finally opened.
Harsh light flooded in. Brooklyn squinted up at Alina standing in the doorway, looking down at her like she was roadkill.
"Karina's birthday party is tonight. My brother's throwing her the most amazing celebration." Her smile was pure malice. "What are you waiting for? Get your ass to the ballroom and serve drinks!"
Brooklyn struggled to her feet, legs shaking so badly she could barely stand. But she had no choice.
After quickly treating her wounds, drinking some water, and forcing down a few bites of food, she was shoved toward the party.
Alina was right—Kaiden had spared no expense.
The entire ballroom had been transformed into a starry night sky. Crystal chandeliers cast rainbow light everywhere, and champagne towers reached the ceiling.
But the real showstopper was Kaiden's gift to Karina.
A hundred-million-dollar blue diamond necklace.
He fastened it around her neck himself while the crowd erupted in applause.
Even so, people were whispering—
"Is Kaiden really suffering from amnesia? He used to be completely obsessed with Brooklyn..."
"Shh! Keep it down! The Sheridans are playing with fire, arranging this engagement while he can't remember. What happens when his memory comes back and he loses his shit?"
"I heard the amnesia's permanent. That's what the doctors said..."
Brooklyn kept her head down, silently refilling glasses and clearing plates, pretending the gossip didn't concern her.
Until—
A pair of designer heels stopped right in front of her.
She looked up to find Karina smiling down at her, champagne flute in hand.
"Brooklyn." She swirled her drink, red lips curving upward. "Did you enjoy the little welcome gift I arranged for you the other day?"
Brooklyn met her gaze steadily. "You really didn't need to do that."
Her voice was quiet but clear. "Kaiden has amnesia now. He doesn't feel anything for me, and I'm not going to interfere with your relationship."
Karina laughed, a sound like breaking glass.
"How fucking noble of you. I've been in love with him for years. When our families first arranged the engagement, do you know how happy I was?"
Her manicured nails dug into Brooklyn's arm, eyes blazing with twisted hatred.
"But then what happened? He announced he'd only marry you! I loved him so much I offered my family's entire billion-dollar empire as a dowry, and he threw me out without blinking."
Her voice started shaking. "That night, it was pouring rain, but I was so desperate I went back to beg him. And you know what I saw? Him fucking you against his office windows. So gentle, so devoted, telling you he'd never want anyone else in the world..."
"Do you have any idea how that destroyed me? And now you think saying 'I won't interfere' makes up for all the pain I suffered?!"
She stepped back and smoothed down her designer gown, her smile sweet and venomous.
"Brooklyn, remember this—I'm going to make you beg for death."
She walked away, leaving Brooklyn standing there with ice in her veins and a terrible sense of dread.
She's going to destroy me.
Brooklyn set down her serving tray and started to leave, but suddenly Karina's panicked voice rang out across the ballroom—
"My necklace is gone!"
The room erupted.
"That's the blue diamond necklace Kaiden just gave her!"
"Who would be crazy enough to steal from the Sheridans?"
In the chaos, Karina looked directly at Brooklyn with tears in her eyes, pointing an accusing finger. "She was the only one I talked to tonight..."
Instantly, every eye in the room turned to Brooklyn.
Kaiden's stare was the coldest—like black ice that could cut through steel.
Shit. I'm fucked.
