In the darkness, Kaiden's footsteps grew closer. Brooklyn instinctively moved toward the door, but his voice stopped her:
"Karina?" His voice was low and rough. "What are you doing in my room? I told you we don't need to rush anything. Sleeping together... we can wait until after the wedding."
He can't see me. He thinks I'm her.
Brooklyn bit her lip hard, forcing herself to stay calm, and mimicked Karina's voice: "I... I'll leave right now..."
The moment she turned, he grabbed her wrist from behind. "Wait."
The next second, he pulled her against his chest.
His body pressed against her back, his heated breath on her ear: "What perfume is that? You smell incredible... hmm?"
Her throat went tight. She couldn't speak. The next second, he turned her face toward his and kissed her.
The kiss was demanding and passionate, tasting of whiskey and that familiar possessiveness.
Just like before...
For a moment she was lost, already swept up in his arms and thrown onto the bed.
"Didn't you say... after the wedding?" Brooklyn's voice shook.
He kissed her collarbone urgently, mumbling, "Changed my mind."
She realized he was serious and tried to push him away.
He frowned, seeming to sense something was off, and reached for the light switch—
No!
If he saw her face, if he realized it was her, if the shock brought back his memories...
She quickly grabbed his hand. "Don't. Don't turn on the light."
Such a simple touch, but it made him groan low in his throat. He stopped reaching for the switch and kissed her harder instead, their fingers interlacing.
His kisses grew deeper, his hands exploring every inch of her skin like he was memorizing her.
"Karina, you told me I was obsessed with you before I lost my memory," he bit her earlobe. "I didn't believe it."
His touch suddenly gentled, filled with something like reverence. "Now... I believe it."
The rest of the night, she bit down hard and closed her eyes, letting him take her again and again.
His kisses burned, his breathing heavy, like he wanted to absorb her into his very bones.
This is the last time. It has to be.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains.
Brooklyn felt like she'd been torn apart and put back together. Her whole body ached, especially her lower back.
Kaiden was still sleeping, breathing evenly, his face peaceful like last night's intensity had been just a dream.
She carefully got dressed, terrified of waking him.
But just as she was about to leave, the door burst open—
"Kaiden, time to get up! Didn't you promise to take me for brunch?"
Karina's cheerful voice cut off abruptly.
She stood frozen in the doorway, her smile dissolving instantly, pupils contracting in shock. Then she lunged forward and slapped Brooklyn hard across the face.
CRACK!
The sound echoed sharply in the quiet room.
"You were supposed to be with that vagrant!" Her voice shook with rage. "What the hell are you doing here?! How can you be such a disgusting slut, still trying to seduce him?!"
Brooklyn's cheek burned. She opened her mouth to explain—
"Shut up!"
Karina clamped her hand over Brooklyn's mouth, her eyes darting frantically to Kaiden stirring on the bed.
She whirled toward the bodyguards in the hallway. "Get her back to the Sheridan house! Now!"
Two guards rushed in and grabbed Brooklyn's arms, dragging her roughly toward the door.
She struggled briefly but only earned a tighter grip.
As they hauled her out, she looked back one last time.
Karina had already stripped off her jacket, wearing only a thin silk nightgown, and was sliding into bed beside Kaiden.
In his sleep, he unconsciously reached out and pulled her close to his chest.
Just like he used to do with me.
