Before Brooklyn could even process what was happening, the guards dragged her to the hospital.
Kaiden stood in the corridor, his face like a thundercloud. "Karina needs a blood transfusion. You're the only compatible donor in the city."
Brooklyn's chest tightened, but she stayed silent.
Of course. Even now, I'm only useful when he needs something.
"Name your price. I'll pay whatever you want." He scribbled out a check and threw it at her.
She didn't move.
He wrote another check, this one for even more money, and slapped it against her face. "How about now?"
Still nothing.
Money. That's all he thinks I want. Like I'm some gold-digging whore.
Growing frustrated, he kept writing checks, each amount larger than the last, throwing them at her like confetti.
"I don't want your money." Brooklyn finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just want you to promise me one thing."
He frowned. "What?"
"I want to leave the Sheridan family." Brooklyn looked directly into his eyes, memorizing his face one last time. "After I leave, I want you to promise... you'll never come looking for me."
He actually laughed, like she'd told him the funniest joke in the world. "You can leave whenever you want. Why the hell would I come looking for you?"
"You're just a nanny. We can hire a dozen more just like you."
Just a nanny. After everything we were... I'm nothing to him now.
Something inside Brooklyn's chest finally shattered completely. The last fragile piece of hope she'd been clinging to crumbled to dust.
Good. This makes it easier.
"Then I'll do it." Her voice was steady now, almost serene. "A Sheridan always keeps his word. Remember what you said today."
Remember that you threw me away. Remember that you chose her.
When the nurse examined Brooklyn, her frown deepened. "Miss, you're severely weakened, and you have multiple injuries. I strongly advise against donation."
"If we proceed, there's a thirty percent chance of shock or worse."
Kaiden stood nearby, completely unmoved. "I don't care about the risks. I only care that Karina survives."
He'd rather I die than let her suffer. The man who used to lose his mind if I got a papercut is willing to let me bleed out for another woman.
Without waiting for Brooklyn's response, he ordered his guards, "Hold her down. Don't let her run."
Run? Oh, Kaiden. You still don't understand. This is exactly what I want—to give you everything one last time, then disappear forever.
Brooklyn lay on the hospital bed, watching her blood flow through the IV tube into collection bags. Each drop that left her body felt like another piece of her old life draining away.
1000cc.
More than the human body could safely spare.
Let it all go. Let every memory, every touch, every whispered promise flow out with this blood. Let me empty myself of you completely.
When it was over, she could barely see straight. The room spun dangerously, and her legs wouldn't support her weight. But for the first time in months, her mind was crystal clear.
I'm hollow now. Empty. But finally, finally free.
Kaiden never once looked at her.
He stood vigil outside the operating room, his entire focus on Karina's condition. His hands pressed against the glass like he could will her back to health through sheer force of love.
The same hands that used to worship my body. The same eyes that used to see only me.
Brooklyn gripped the wall, forcing herself to walk toward the exit. Each step felt like shedding skin, leaving behind everything she used to be.
As she passed him, she stopped for one last look.
Memorize this moment. Remember how easily he replaced you. Remember how little you meant.
"Goodbye, Kaiden."
He didn't turn around, didn't acknowledge her existence. She might as well have been invisible—a ghost, a shadow, completely irrelevant.
His whole heart was locked away behind those operating room doors.
Good. Perfect. This is how it should end—with him not even noticing I'm gone.
Brooklyn smiled sadly and walked away, each step lighter than the last.
I'm walking away from you, Kaiden Sheridan. From your obsession, your possession, your twisted love. I'm walking toward my own life.
This time, she didn't even go back for her luggage. She went straight to the airport with nothing but the blood-stained clothes on her back and a passport to freedom.
Material things don't matter. Nothing from that house matters. It was all his anyway.
At the airport, she bought the first ticket to Paris. As she sat in the departure lounge, something strange happened—she felt herself breathing freely for the first time in over a year.
No GPS tracking my phone. No guards following me. No Kaiden deciding what I can and can't do.
As the plane lifted off, she pressed her face to the window and watched Manhattan shrink below her. Somewhere down there, Kaiden was probably still pacing that hospital corridor, his whole world revolving around Karina's recovery.
And I'm already nothing to him. A forgotten chapter. A discarded toy.
She closed her eyes and remembered something from long ago—him holding her tight after making love, biting her earlobe as he whispered:
"You can't escape me, Brooklyn."
"This life, the next life—you're mine forever."
Back then, his hands had been so warm, like they really could chain her to him for eternity. She'd believed him. Part of her had even wanted it to be true.
But you were wrong, weren't you? You let me go the moment someone better came along.
The plane climbed higher, carrying her toward a new continent, a new language, a new life.
I'm not yours anymore. I'm not anyone's. For the first time in my life, I belong only to myself.
The old Brooklyn—the scared girl who'd lived in his shadow, who'd been broken and rebuilt in his image—died somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean.
Goodbye, Kaiden.
Thank you for setting me free.
