The glass door of the bakery chimed softly as Kaiden pushed it open.
He stood at the counter, surprised to see the shop completely empty—the usual long lines were nowhere to be found today.
"Mr. Sheridan!"
The employee's face lit up when she saw him, reaching behind the counter for an elegantly wrapped box of red velvet cupcakes.
"Perfect timing! Just pulled a fresh batch from the oven."
Kaiden took the warm box, his fingertips tingling at the contact.
Why does this feel so familiar?
"Getting these for your girlfriend again?" the employee asked cheerfully while making change.
"Haven't seen you in ages! Didn't you used to come every week?"
Kaiden froze, looking up at her sharply.
"I used to... come here regularly?"
The employee looked surprised.
"Oh yeah, sometimes alone, sometimes with your girlfriend."
"You've been coming for years. Rain or shine."
"You must really love her. I remember one time during that terrible thunderstorm, you still waited in line to get her cupcakes."
Girlfriend? What girlfriend?
Kaiden's brow furrowed. He wanted to ask more, but suddenly a group of customers burst in, and the employee hurried away with a quick "Thanks for coming!"
He stood outside the bakery holding the cupcakes, fragments of memory flickering through his mind.
He could see himself standing in this same line countless times, but there was always a blurry figure beside him.
Someone standing on tiptoes to peek at the display case. Someone tugging his sleeve and whispering "I want the ones fresh from the oven." Someone snatching the bag before he'd even paid, opening it immediately to taste.
But the face remained frustratingly unclear.
Who was she?
He stared down at the cupcakes, his chest suddenly tight with inexplicable pain.
When he returned to the hospital, the room door was slightly ajar, and he could hear hushed conversation inside.
"...Brooklyn really left?"
"Yeah, I heard... yesterday... during my surgery..."
"Finally..."
"My brother... amnesia... really okay..."
The voices were too low, the words too fragmented to make out clearly, but Kaiden instinctively lightened his steps.
"After brother lost his memory... that bitch Brooklyn... I don't understand... won't let go... still treating me... so annoying..."
"Shh, don't say that..."
"Anyway, she's gone now. She'll never come back."
Brooklyn. There's that name again.
The last sentence rang crystal clear in his ears. Kaiden's hand froze mid-air as his heart began racing violently.
Gone? She's gone?
He burst through the door.
The conversation stopped dead.
Karina and Alina both turned, their faces shifting with alarm.
"Kaiden?"
Karina quickly rearranged her expression into a gentle smile.
"You're back!"
Kaiden's gaze swept between them, his voice deceptively calm.
"What were you talking about?"
"Nothing important," Karina said smoothly.
"Just heard from a nurse that Brooklyn left the hospital."
"Apparently... she's leaving the country."
Leaving the country.
Kaiden's fingers unconsciously tightened around the cupcake box, crushing it slightly. His heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible fist, the pain so sharp he could barely breathe.
But his expression remained completely unchanged.
Why does this feel like losing everything?
"Also, big brother..."
Alina's shrill voice cut through his spiraling thoughts.
"I was just asking Karina if she's really not mad about how cold you've been since losing your memory."
"And she said as long as you're okay, that's all that matters."
"See?"
Alina sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes theatrically.
"A woman this perfect is impossible to find. You better treat her right."
Perfect? Why does that word feel like a lie?
Kaiden mumbled some response, but his mind kept echoing "Brooklyn's leaving the country."
And "never coming back"—does that mean her too?
"Kaiden?"
Karina sensed his distraction, asking carefully.
"Are you... upset about Brooklyn leaving?"
Am I? Why would I be upset about a nanny leaving?
Kaiden snapped back to attention, his frown deepening.
"Don't be ridiculous."
"She hurt you and now she's running away. Good riddance."
The words taste like ash in my mouth.
The moment he said it, his heart felt like it had been stabbed, but his face showed nothing.
Karina visibly relaxed, reaching for his sleeve.
"You're right. I'm fine now, aren't I?"
"From now on... let's just focus on us. Don't think about her anymore, okay?"
Don't think about her. But I can't even remember who she is.
Kaiden was quiet for a moment, then nodded.
"Fine."
But as Karina contentedly leaned against his shoulder, his gaze drifted involuntarily to the window.
Outside, the clouds were streaked in long lines, like contrails from a plane that had already disappeared.
The emptiness in my heart is getting bigger.
What the hell did I just lose?
