Those two words hit the wedding like a lightning strike.
The moment Kaiden finished speaking, his entire body went rigid and collapsed backward, crashing onto the red carpet.
"Kaiden!"
Karina screamed and lunged forward to catch him, but only managed to grab his loosened tie as he fell.
The venue erupted into chaos.
"What the hell just happened? Did he just say he doesn't want to?"
"Did I hear that right? Is this wedding off? I knew they shouldn't have tried to fool him..."
"The Wingstons are fucked now. When he remembers everything..."
Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire. Karina stood on the platform, her nails digging so deep into her palms they drew blood.
Stay calm. Control the narrative.
She forced a smile and took the microphone from the stunned officiant.
"Ladies and gentlemen."
Her voice trembled but she fought to maintain composure.
"Kaiden has been working himself to exhaustion preparing for our wedding. He's been unwell for weeks."
"His doctor recommended postponing, but he didn't want to disappoint me by delaying our special day."
She paused, scanning the crowd with calculated vulnerability.
"I never expected him to collapse at such an important moment... Please don't misinterpret what he said."
Her voice hardened with warning.
"I hope everyone here remembers that the Sheridan and Wingston families have always been united."
A threat wrapped in silk.
The last sentence carried steel, her gaze targeting the guests who'd been whispering loudest.
They immediately fell silent, looking away in embarrassment.
Alina rushed onto the platform, hissing under her breath.
"What the fuck happened? He seemed fine this morning!"
"How the hell should I know?!"
Karina snarled back, her perfect smile finally cracking.
"Get an ambulance! Now!"
She turned back to the crowd, slipping the mask back on.
"Today's ceremony is postponed. Thank you all for coming. We'll reschedule once Kaiden has recovered."
Keep it simple. Control the story.
The guests exchanged uncertain glances but were efficiently escorted out by Wingston security.
After the ambulance screamed away, the wedding venue was left with nothing but scattered petals and a few cleanup crew members.
Karina finally dropped her act, ripping off her veil and hurling it to the ground.
"Fucking hell! Why did he suddenly say he didn't want to?"
She paced frantically, her designer heels crushing rose petals.
"Did someone tell him something? Are you absolutely sure Brooklyn didn't get a chance to talk to him before she left?"
"Of course not!"
Alina's face had gone ghostly pale, her fingers twisting her skirt nervously.
"But... what if he's remembering everything?"
The words hit Karina like ice water.
She froze mid-step, pupils contracting with terror.
"Impossible! The doctors said his memory recovery chances were minimal..."
"But what if they were wrong?"
Alina's voice shook.
"You didn't see how he was with Brooklyn before. That psycho would do anything for her!"
The memories flooded back—how Kaiden had thrown her in the storage room for two days just for calling Brooklyn a bitch. How he'd made grown men disappear for touching her.
If he remembers what we did to her...
"Shut up!"
Karina's voice cracked like a whip, cutting off Alina's spiral.
"The priority now is damage control. Today's incident cannot leak to the press!"
She yanked out her phone, speed-dialing frantically.
"Kill all wedding coverage immediately! And get security to the hospital—no one gets near Kaiden's room without my approval!"
After hanging up, Karina took a shuddering breath and turned to Alina.
"You're going to the hospital to watch him. Call me the second he wakes up."
"Me?"
Alina's eyes went wide with terror.
"Why me? What if he wakes up and—"
"Because you're a Sheridan!"
Karina's voice turned vicious.
"You're his sister—no one will stop you from visiting. And he won't actually hurt you, even if he remembers. I need time to clean up this fucking mess!"
And if he does hurt you, at least it won't be me.
Alina wanted to argue, but Karina's murderous expression silenced her. She nodded reluctantly.
"Remember."
Karina grabbed her wrist, nails digging into flesh like claws.
"If he remembers anything, we stick to the story—Brooklyn chose to leave on her own. We don't know anything about anything. Got it?"
Alina gasped in pain but didn't dare pull away, nodding frantically.
We're so fucked if he remembers.
Watching Alina flee, Karina finally collapsed onto her scattered wedding dress.
The man who'd been so devoted just days ago, who'd promised to marry her, had just publicly humiliated her in front of the entire city's elite.
She fumbled for her cigarettes with shaking hands, unable to light the damn thing.
If he remembers Brooklyn...
If he remembers how much he loved her...
If he finds out what we did...
Karina couldn't finish the thought. Some possibilities were too terrifying to contemplate.
