Suitcases crashed onto the marble floor of the Sheridan mansion with dull, heavy thuds.
"Kaiden Sheridan! You fucking monster!"
Mr. Sheridan's face was purple with rage as he pointed at the man lounging on the sofa.
"Throwing your own parents out for some woman?!"
Some woman. Still calling her that.
Kaiden sat with his legs crossed, immaculate in his tailored suit, fingers drumming against the armrest with deadly precision. He looked at his parents like they were strangers.
Which they are. Blood doesn't make family—love does. And you never loved her.
"Dad, you're getting old. The countryside will be better for your health."
His voice was perfectly calm, each word a surgical cut.
"Don't worry about Sheridan Industries. I'll take excellent care of it."
Without you poisoning everything you touch.
Mrs. Sheridan collapsed to the floor, wailing like a banshee.
"This is cursed! How did we raise such an ungrateful monster?! What kind of spell did that bitch cast on you to make you abandon all human decency?!"
Human decency. Rich, coming from you.
In the corner, Alina curled on a single chair, her face ghostly pale, eyes vacant and unfocused.
Her exposed arms were covered in vicious welts, like she'd been whipped with wire. The wounds had scabbed over but remained shockingly brutal.
A taste of what she gave Brooklyn. Just a small taste.
The front door burst open as Karina click-clacked in on designer heels, freezing when she saw the scene.
Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan's curses, Alina's injuries, and Kaiden's expression of absolute zero—everything made her want to run.
But the Wingston empire was crumbling. Stock prices plummeting, investors fleeing like rats from a sinking ship.
She forced herself forward.
"Kaiden..."
Her voice was soft and trembling, eyes instantly welling with tears.
"I heard about your parents moving to the countryside? Should I arrange for people to help—"
"Miss Wingston finally decides to show her face."
Kaiden's laugh was silk over broken glass.
"I was starting to think you'd hide forever."
Coward. Just like the rest of them.
Karina bit her lip, approaching with calculated vulnerability to take his hand.
"Kaiden, everything before was just a misunderstanding—"
CRACK!
The slap echoed through the room. Her cheek bloomed with a perfect handprint, blood beading at the corner of her mouth.
That's for every time you hurt her.
"Misunderstanding?"
He rose from the sofa, stalking toward her like a predator.
"You having someone put thumbtacks in Brooklyn's shoes was a misunderstanding? Torturing her during shopping trips was a misunderstanding? Locking her in a freezer was a fucking misunderstanding?"
Each word was a bullet to her conscience—if she had one.
Karina went white as paper, tears streaming down her face.
"I really thought she was targeting me... And I loved you so much, I got jealous..."
Love. You don't know the meaning of the word.
"But she's gone now! Kaiden, we can start over! The merger between Sheridan and Wingston would benefit both families..."
Still trying to use me. Still thinking this is about business.
Kaiden's hand shot out, wrapping around her throat with crushing force.
Karina's eyes bulged in terror as she clawed desperately at his arm, unable to break his iron grip.
"You think you're worthy of speaking her name?"
His voice was soft as a caress, his eyes promising murder.
"You're not fit to breathe the same air as her."
I should kill you. I should snap your neck like the worthless thing you are.
Just as Karina's vision started going black, Kaiden released her, throwing her to the floor like garbage.
She curled up gasping, throat burning like acid.
But death's too easy. You need to suffer first.
"Take her to the basement."
His voice was arctic winter.
"Since she likes locking people up so much, let her have a taste."
An eye for an eye. Just like the good book says.
Karina's pupils contracted in terror. She scrambled backward on hands and knees, then suddenly screamed:
"I'm pregnant!"
The words hit the room like a bomb.
Everything went silent.
Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan stared at her stomach in shock. Even Alina's vacant eyes sharpened slightly.
Kaiden's eyes narrowed to deadly slits.
"What did you say?"
Please let this be another lie.
"I... I'm carrying your child..."
Karina clutched her throat, voice hoarse as sandpaper.
"From that night... when you..."
That night when I thought she was Brooklyn. When I held her and pretended she was the woman I'd lost.
She didn't finish, but everyone understood which night she meant.
Kaiden suddenly laughed—a sound that made Karina's blood freeze.
If there's a child... if she's carrying some innocent baby...
"Wonderful."
He straightened his cufflinks with deliberate calm.
"Then we'll wait for the birth and do a paternity test."
Because I don't trust a single word that comes out of your mouth.
Karina trembled.
"You don't believe me?"
"Believe you?"
Kaiden crouched down, gripping her chin with bruising force.
"Send her back to the Wingston house. Twenty-four-hour surveillance. If she even thinks about terminating this pregnancy..."
He released her with disgust, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.
"I won't hesitate to destroy both our families."
And if there is a child, if it's mine... it's the only piece of Brooklyn I might ever have again.
The only connection to that night when I held her one last time.
Karina collapsed completely, finally understanding what kind of monster she'd awakened.
A monster who'd lost his angel.
A monster with nothing left to lose.
