I welcomed the cool breeze that blew against me on this warm summer night. I sat on the balcony looking out to the starry sky. It almost mirrored the city lights below.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Kurapika has texted me saying he would be home tonight. I haven't seen him in almost a month! He's been working endlessly, trying to recover the last pair of his brethren's eyes. In all the two years of our relationship, this has been the longest we've been apart.
I have been cleaning our apartment, preparing meals, and just about anything to keep my mind busy. I just couldn't wait for my beloved's arrival! My excitement grew as I heard someone unlocking the door. I quickly ran back inside. My heart skipped a beat. Kurapika was finally home!
"My Heaven! Come here...it's been too long!" Kurapika wrapped his arms around me.
I took in his scent. Oh, how I've missed his lovely scent!
"Kurapika! I'm so happy you made it back home safely. I missed you so much."
"You were always on my mind. My only desire was to see you. You cannot fathom how much I've missed you." He pulled away to look into my eyes.
Kurapika had dark bags under his eyes. My heart sank to my stomach.
"Darling? Have you been taking care of yourself? Tell me the truth."
"Don't worry about me...I'm home, am I not?"
"Kurapika?"
He hesitated before answering me.
"I may have missed a few meals." He answered while hanging his head.
"And what about sleep?" I placed my hands on my hips.
"You know I can't sleep without you dreaming next to me."
"Oh, Kurapika. You need to take better care of yourself. For me." I placed my head on his chest.
"I know. I apologize. Now...are you done reprimanding me?" He made circles on my back with his hands.
"Yes. You know I just care deeply about you."
"I know. I appreciate that, " he said while pulling away to look me up and down. "I see you have been taking care of yourself. You look good. In fact...you look...sexy.
I felt myself blush. Before I had the chance to thank him for the compliment, his lips were already on mine. Like I mentioned before, we've been together for two years. Still...every time he kisses me...it feels like magic.
Kurapika finally broke the kiss for air.
"I love you, (Y/N)."
"I love you, too," I said. "Now go get cleaned up. I made you chicken curry."
A big smile spread across Kurapika's face.
"That was so thoughtful of you! I can't wait...I'm famished."
I heated up Kurapika's dinner while he showered. It felt so good to have him home. Thoughts of our future flashed through my mind. I discovered something special during his absence. As much as I wanted to tell him, I knew I had to wait. He just arrived from a long journey. He needed to rest first.
"It smells amazing here!" Kurapika said while walking into the kitchen.
He looked so sexy standing there wearing his pajamas. His hair was still wet.
He ate his dinner as if he hadn't eaten in days. I sat across from him.
"Oh, I was so excited to see you that I almost forgot...were you successful in retrieving the scarlet eyes?"
Kurapika had a look of disappointment on his face. He took a sip of water before answering me.
"Unfortunately...no. However, I did receive intel on where they might be."
"I'm sorry to hear that. So...when will you be leaving again?"
He held his hand up. "I will not go over the details at the moment. I want tonight to be about us. Only us."
"I like that idea."
Kurapika and I spent the night in each other's arms. Whoever said, "absence makes the heart grow fonder" knew what they were talking about. I was in ecstasy as Kurapika held me close against his skin.
July 4
I woke up early. My darling Kurapika must have been tired, as he is usually up before me. I sat in bed, watching him. He was on his side, sleeping peacefully. His breathing was steady and calm. He never tells me about his missions. I can only imagine the danger he faces while trying to reclaim what is rightfully his.
I kissed him on his cheek before getting up to make breakfast. As soon as I set his plate down on the table, he walked into the kitchen. He stretched his arms out while yawning. His hair was disheveled from last night. He gave me a kiss before thanking me for breakfast.
We sat across from each other. He already looked like he was deep in thought.
"(Y/N)? I promise...we'll spend most of today together. I just have a few things to take care of first."
"Anything I can help you with?"
"I appreciate the offer, but no. It's about my Clan's eyes. Although the details are almost finalized, there are a few more loose ends I need to tie up." He started to drink his coffee.
"I understand. When are you going back out there?"
Kurapika cleared his throat before answering.
"Tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" I asked. I jumped out of my seat. "But you just got back!"
"(Y/N), please sit back down. I'm sorry, but you know how much this means to me."
He was right. I understood his resolve. I wanted to give him the support he needed.
"I know. I just miss you so much when you're gone," I said as I sat back down. "I have an idea...why don't I accompany you?"
Kurapika's eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
"Let me go with you. I can help."
"Absolutely not! It's too dangerous. I will not put you in harm's way."
"But...Kurapika..."
"No! End of discussion!"
He slammed his coffee mug on the table before standing up to leave.
I later found him in his office. He was arguing with someone on the phone.
"How many times do I need to tell you? I was already given access...I don't care how much it costs...just make sure everything is taken care of by the morning. I'm a busy person...don't waste my time...you don't want to see me angry."
I slowly walked up to him after he ended his call. I rubbed his shoulders.
"That feels good...thank you," he said.
"Is everything alright?"
"Yes. It's just frustrating...dealing with mindless people. Anyway, I'm almost done here. I want to take you out."
"Kurapika...I'm sorry about this morning. I didn't mean to get you upset."
"Please...I should be the one apologizing. I just can't bear the thought of you getting hurt."
"I understand."
"Get ready. I'm taking you to your favorite place."
"Really?" My eyes widened in excitement.
"Yes. I just need to pack my suitcase first. I want to have everything ready so my only focus will be on you."
His entrancing eyes were fixed on mine. I thought now would be a good time to share my news with him.
"Kurapika?"
"Yes, my Heaven?"
I hesitated. No...I'll wait until his mission is complete before telling him.
"Oh...nothing."
He smiled at me.
Later that afternoon, I was finishing my makeup while Kurapika was in the shower. I noticed his suitcase on the bed. I opened it just to make sure he had everything he needed. There was a small black box tucked away in one of the compartments. I looked back to make sure Kurapika was still in the shower before opening it. My heart filled with warmth as I looked at the beautiful diamond ring. Was he going to ask me to marry him?
I heard the water shut off. I fumbled around before tucking the ring back in its place.
"Almost ready?" he asked when he stepped out of the bathroom.
"Yes." I answered while putting on my lipstick.
"You know you don't need any of that stuff," he said, referring to my makeup.
He looked absolutely gorgeous standing there in his suit. The back of his straight blonde hair fell below the collar of his shirt. He kissed my cheek before sitting on the bed to put on his socks.
"Just give me a few more minutes. I need to make sure my arrangements have been made," he said.
"Take your time."
I waited for him out on the balcony. An idea popped in my head. Why don't I follow him tomorrow? I'm sure he will appreciate the surprise. I thought about it for a moment. I would need someone to drive me to the airport. But who? Leorio? No...he would be on Kurapika's side for sure. I know...Killua!
I made sure Kurapika was still in his office before calling Killua.
"Hey, (Y/N). What's up?" he answered.
"Hello, Killua. Happy birthday!"
"You're three days early."
"Well...I'm just excited for you. Turning eighteen is a big deal."
"Not really. Anyway, what's your real reason for calling me?"
"I need a favor. I was kinda hoping you'd drive me to the airport in the morning."
"Where's Kurapika? He can't take you?" he asked.
"Well...that's the thing. He's leaving for his mission tomorrow. I want to follow him. You know...as a surprise."
"Let me guess...you asked if you could go and he said no."
"Ugh...yes. So will you help me, Killua?"
He was silent for a few seconds. I heard him take a deep breath.
"Yeah, I'll drive you. Just don't get me in trouble with Kurapika!"
"Oh, thank you! You're the best! I'll make sure to get you something big for your birthday!"
"Yeah, yeah. When should I pick you up?"
"He'll be gone by five in the morning so be here around five thirty. I don't want him to notice you."
"See ya then."
"Bye!"
I ended the call. My heart rate increased as I thought about my plan to surprise Kurapika.
Kurapika and I had an amazing evening. After dinner, he took me to the park to watch the fireworks.
"After I retrieve the last pair of eyes, I'm going to find someone local who'll hire me as a hunter."
"Really?" I asked. I couldn't contain my excitement.
"Yes. I want to be as close to you as possible."
"I'd love that!"
"And...thank you. None of this would be possible without your support."
"Of course."
We spent the rest of the night tangled up in our sheets. When Kurapika finally fell asleep, I searched his phone for the details of his mission. I jotted down his destination, the addresses to his hotel, and meeting place. I also noted the time of his meeting.
I crawled back into bed next to Kurapika. The moonlight provided enough light for me to see his features. He looked like he was dreaming. His eyebrows pulled closer together, as if he was having a nightmare. I didn't know if I should wake him.
His mouth was partly open. I kissed his lips in an attempt to save him from his bad dream. His eyes opened immediately.
"(Y/N)!" he shouted as he pulled me into his arms. "Thank goodness you're safe."
"What do you mean?"
"I had the most terrible dream...you were attacked by an Emitter...I couldn't save you!" he explained, talking fast.
"Shh...it was just a dream." I said while combing my fingers through his hair.
"It felt so real," he said. "Come here. I want you close to me."
He squeezed me before falling back to sleep. I rested my head on his chest. His rapid heart rate was slowing down. The sound echoed through my soul.
July 5
Kurapika gave me a goodbye kiss before leaving for his mission. I jumped out of bed as soon as I heard him lock the door. I quickly packed a bag before running downstairs to meet Killua. It was still dark out, but I spotted his icy blue sports car immediately. I jumped in the passenger seat while greeting him. He pulled out of the parking lot in silence.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" he finally asked when we reached the highway.
"To be honest, no."
He smiled to himself.
"What are you smiling about?" I asked.
"Nothing. I'm just happy for Kurapika. He needs someone like you."
"Thank you, Killua. I'm glad you feel that way."
"Hey...don't tell anyone I said that!" he said. It was obvious he felt embarrassed.
"Don't worry," I said. I started to giggle. "How is Alluka? I'm surprised she's not with you."
"Yeah, she didn't sound too thrilled about driving to the airport so I left her with Gon."
"Aww. How sweet."
"What's so sweet about that?" he asked.
"You know...the way Gon looks after her."
"What the hell are you talking about? They're friends."
"You don't see it?"
"See what?"
"The way Gon and Alluka look at each other."
Killua gripped his steering wheel while clenching his jaw.
"Just wait until I see Gon," he said.
"And what will you do? Admit it...he's the best guy for Alluka."
Killua couldn't answer.
At that moment, I felt a sudden wave of nausea.
"Uh...Killua? Do you mind pulling over?"
Killua looked at me. His eyes widened.
"(Y/N)? Are you okay? You look pale."
"Just pull over. I don't want to throw up in your nice car."
I opened the door as soon as Killua pulled his car over. I threw up all over the grass. Killua got out of the car. He ran beside me to pull my hair back. He rubbed my back as I continued to vomit. I couldn't breathe. My stomach wanted to empty its contents and more. Why couldn't I stop? There was nothing left!
I felt weak when my stomach finally decided to calm down. Killua opened his trunk. He grabbed a beach towel.
"Here you go," he said.
"Thank you." I wiped my face clean.
Killua helped me back in the car. The look of concern never left his face. We rode in silence for a few minutes.
"Are you sure you still want me to take you to the airport? Maybe you should go to the hospital instead."
"No. I'm okay. I promise."
"(Y/N)? What's going on?"
I didn't answer. I turned my head to look out the window.
"(Y/N)!" he shouted.
"Can you keep a secret?"
"Of course."
"I...I'm pregnant."
"Huh?" he asked. His jaw dropped as he stared at me. "Wait...how?"
"Umm...aren't you turning eighteen? Surely you know how babies are made."
"Of course I know that part! I mean...I didn't know you two were trying."
"We weren't."
"How did Kurapika take the news?"
"He doesn't know."
"What do you mean he doesn't know?"
"He was gone when I found out," I said. I placed my hand on Killua's shoulder. "Killua, you're the only one who knows. Please...don't tell anyone. Not even Gon. I know I'm putting you in a difficult situation."
"I won't say anything, but I think you should tell Kurapika. Like as soon as possible."
"I know. That's why I'm following him."
Killua laughed.
"What's so funny?"
"Kurapika...he's going to be a dad," Killua answered. He turned to look at me. "Don't be afraid to tell him. He's going to be ecstatic."
I smiled. "You think so?"
"I know so."
An hour later, we arrived at the airport. Killua helped me carry my bag all the way to the terminal.
"Are you sure you'll be okay? I'll go with you if you want," he said. He handed me my bag.
I thought about Killua's offer for a moment. It would be nice to have him around. However, this was something I had to do alone.
"Thanks for the offer, but I'll be okay."
"Well...stay out of trouble. Text me when you find Kurapika, okay?"
"Sure! And thanks again." I reached over and wrapped my arms around Killua. "You're a great friend."
He blushed. "Umm...this is embarrassing," he said. After a few seconds, he wrapped his arms around me. He gave me a tight squeeze before letting me go.
"Well...I better get going. I gotta go kick Gon's ass now."
"Hey! Take it easy on him."
"Yeah, yeah." He waved me off.
I watched as Killua walked away. His hands were tucked inside of his pockets.
I slept on the airship. Before I knew it, we were landing.
I checked the address to Kurapika's motel as soon as I stepped out of the airport. I was in a bizarre city. This place gave me a bad vibe. What did I expect though? This is exactly where I pictured the possessor of the scarlet eyes to live.
A taxi took me to Kurapika's motel. I did a double take when I saw the place. Did I have the right address? Was he really staying here?
The motel was run down. I stayed in the room directly next to him. I was honestly afraid of walking into my room. The light sparked when I turned it on.
It wasn't as bad as I expected, but still. It wasn't ideal. After sending Killua a quick text, I pressed my ear against the wall to listen for Kurapika. I heard his voice! He was arguing with someone on the phone. The butterflies fluttered inside my stomach as I listened to him. It amazed me how a single human being had the power to make me feel this way. I fought the urge to walk over there.
A few minutes later, it was quiet. His call must have ended. My phone vibrated. It was a text from Kurapika.
I made it to my destination. Everything is fine. Besides this ache in my heart, I am well. I miss you terribly. I'll try to update you as much as I can. I love you.
A big smile spread across my face as I replied to him. I checked Kurapika's schedule for tomorrow. I have decided to meet him before his encounter with the current possessor of the eyes. That way we could recover them together. How romantic is that?
July 6
I needed to make sure to leave before Kurapika so I got up early. After I got ready for the day, I pressed my ear against the wall. His room was silent. Maybe he was still sleeping. Hmm...I doubt it. It was already six. I needed to make sure he didn't see me.
I successfully left my room without Kurapika seeing me. I still had time to spare so I decided to eat breakfast. After making sure my food was actually going to stay down, I left.
I had the taxi drop me off a few blocks away from my destination. The closer I got to the meeting place, the more nervous I felt. This was the scariest place I've ever been to. A fog covered my path. Most of the buildings looked abandoned. Windows were either shattered or boarded up. There was no sign of life anywhere. I guess that was a good thing. I was strong, but I didn't know how to use Nen. Kurapika had promised to teach me once his mission was over.
I hesitated before climbing the stairs to the meeting place. This building was taller than the others. Once I was at the door, I looked around. No sign of Kurapika. The nervous feeling in my stomach grew more intense. I should have listened to my gut. I should have called Killua to pick me up. But no...I blamed the feeling on my morning sickness.
I slowly turned the doorknob. The door was unlocked. I walked in the empty lobby. The sound of my footsteps echoed throughout the main floor. No one was there. I kept walking until I saw a small table. There was something sitting on top of it, but it was covered by a blanket. My curiosity got the best of me as I removed the blanket to reveal whatever it was hiding. I gasped as soon as I saw them...the scarlet eyes! What were they doing here?
There they were. Two glass containers filled with formaldehyde. One scarlet eye floated in the middle of each container. Do I go ahead and take them? Or should I wait for Kurapika?
I stood there debating whether or not to take the eyes. I reached my hands out to pick them up. A soft glow formed around them. I felt a strong presence...it almost paralyzed me with fear. This presence...it had an evil aura. My heart stopped when I suddenly heard a loud crash.
I turned to my right. A bright yellow ball of Nen came directly at me. It sent me flying. I crashed into the wall.
July 7
I heard Kurapika talking. I wish I could open my eyes to see his face. However, I couldn't. It felt as if I was trapped inside my own body. I listened closely to the sounds around me. Besides Kurapika's voice, I heard a lot of beeping. It sounded like I was in a hospital. But...how did I get here?
"I already had a sinking feeling before I entered the building...and then I saw her on the ground. Words can't describe what I felt next. My precious (Y/N)...her body limp as I turned her over. I thought she was already dead."
"But you got the guy, right?" Leorio asked.
"Of course. After stabbing him with my Judgment Chain, I grabbed the scarlet eyes and (Y/N). I ran to the nearest hospital."
That's how I got here.
"Kurapika...that's awful," Gon said.
"Yeah...we love (Y/N) so much," Alluka said.
Gon and Alluka are here to see me? How sweet of them. That means Killua must be nearby.
"Everyone shut up! (Y/N) is here because of me!" Killua shouted while gripping my sheets. "Some fuckin birthday."
"What are you talking about, Killua?" Kurapika asked.
"She...she asked me to drive her to the airport. She wanted to surprise you."
"She...what?"
"I'm sorry, Kurapika. I wanted to say no, but she sounded so desperate when she called me."
I felt Killua comb my hair back with his fingers.
"She's madly in love with you," Killua said. "And...she had something important to tell you."
"What? What did she have to tell me?"
Please, Killua. Don't tell him.
"Uh...sorry," Killua said with hesitation in his voice. "She never told me what it was."
"She didn't? Dammit...I had something important to ask her as well."
"Hey!" Leorio interjected. "(Y/N) is right there! She can hear you...tell her whatever it is you need to say!"
"You really think she can hear us?" Kurapika asked.
"I do." Leorio answered. "C'mon everyone. Let's allow Kurapika to be alone with (Y/N)."
I heard the door open and close. I felt Kurapika squeeze my hand.
"(Y/N)?" Kurapika called out to me. He sniffled, as if holding back tears. "I love you so damn much. Please...don't leave me. We have such a beautiful future ahead of us. I can't imagine life without you. You can't leave me...do you hear me?" He placed his head on my chest. I felt him sob. "If you can hear me...I want to tell you about the dream I have for us. I bought you a ring. Don't worry...I plan on asking you properly. I just want you to know. You can plan our wedding...whatever you want...it's yours. And then...I'll find the safest neighborhood for us. I'll buy you a house there." He paused for a few seconds. "(Y/N)? I...I want children with you. I know it's something we've never talked about, but I want us to have a bunch of children. If that's alright with you, of course. I hope we both share the same dream."
I heard the door open. The doctor was calling Kurapika out of the room. Kurapika kissed me on the forehead before leaving my side.
The door closed. I was alone. I didn't like it.
It was the strangest feeling...I was wide awake, but I couldn't move. My eyes wouldn't even open. What if I was stuck like this forever? I summoned every ounce of strength from within my body in order to get up.
I prayed...I begged. Please, Kurapika needs to know how I feel.
My bones ached. I didn't realize Nen was so powerful. I was only hit in the stomach so why did it feel like my entire body had been struck? I didn't want to give up. My fingers moved. I felt a hard object close to my left hand. It felt like a small box. I ignored the stabbing pain that I felt radiate throughout my body in order to open the box. It was Kurapika's ring! I slipped it on my finger.
It felt like hours before Kurapika came back. The sound of his footsteps rapidly approached me. I heard all of our friends follow behind him. He grabbed my left hand.
"Leorio! She's wearing my ring!"
"Wait...what? How?"
"I don't know," Kurapika answered. "I just know she's going to be my wife! As soon as she gets better...I'm going to marry her!"
"But...didn't you just hear what the doctor said?"
"I don't give a damn about what the doctor said. He doesn't know my (Y/N). She is the strongest person I know. She's going to pull through this. You'll see."
July 14
My Darling Kurapika,
These past two years have been the best of my life. I thank the Heavens everyday for sending you my way. Love was something I never believed in before I met you. Did I ever tell you the moment I fell in love with you? It was the evening of my birthday. You were stuck at work. You didn't think you were going to make it home in time to take me out. But then, out of nowhere, you appeared at my doorstep, huffing and puffing. You told me traffic was terrible so you decided to run. You had a huge bouquet of flowers in your hand. That's when I knew. I knew you'd be mine forever.
I'm trying my hardest to come back to you. I also want us to get married as soon as possible. I want to start a family with you. I can picture a bunch of little Kurtas running around the beautiful house we'll share.
Love is a powerful thing. I truly believe it has the power to heal. What did the doctors tell you? When am I coming home? I just want you to hold me in your arms, kiss me, and whisper sweet things in my ear. And make me laugh. My favorite is when you make me laugh until my stomach hurts.
I hope you find this letter soon. I want you to know this was nobody's fault but my own. Please, let Killua know. He was only trying to help me. We have the most amazing friends, don't we?
I'm officially out of energy so I'm going to rest now.
One more thing...remember that picture you showed me of your parents? Well, I keep seeing a woman who looks exactly like your mother. She keeps smiling at me. Maybe she's giving me her approval. I'm glad. I want your parents to accept me as their daughter.
I love you more than you'll ever know.
(Y/N)...Kurta
Kurapika closed the book as soon as Leorio walked in.
"Hey, there you are. The service is about to start."
"Right. Just give me a minute."
"What's that you're reading?" Leorio asked while staring at the small book in Kurapika's lap.
"(Y/N)'s diary. I found it next to her the day she passed. I never knew she kept one."
"But...how did it get there?"
"I don't know. The real question is...how did she manage to write an entry on the seventh?" Kurapika asked while showing Leorio the last entry.
"The seventh? We were with her the entire day!" Leorio adjusted his glasses to look at the date.
"Exactly. The only time I left her side was to speak to her doctor."
"That's right. And she was wearing your ring when we got back!"
Kurapika slouched forward in his chair. He gripped his hair with both of his hands. Leorio placed his hand on his friend's shoulder.
"Hey, we gotta go. They're waiting for us to start."
"I can't do it, Leorio."
"What about your speech?"
"You give it." Kurapika answered while reaching into his pocket to give Leorio a sheet of paper.
Leorio read through Kurapika's speech.
"No...you need to be the one who shares this. These are words from your heart."
Kurapika stood up. He walked around the small room of the funeral home with clenched fists. He punched a tabletop lamp. It fell to the floor, breaking into tiny pieces. Kurapika pulled his arm back to punch another lamp, but Leorio stopped him.
"Kurapika! You've got to pull yourself together!"
"How dare you! How dare you tell me to pull myself together!" Kurapika shouted. "You didn't lose the love of your life!"
"No...but I did lose a friend. We all did."
"Right. A friend." Kurapika hung his head. "(Y/N) was more than a friend to me. She held my heart. Now there is nothing but emptiness." Kurapika placed his hand over his heart.
Leorio grabbed Kurapika by the arms.
"Kurapika! Listen to me...(Y/N) is still with you. She will always be with you! And you have us...we are here for you...whatever you need."
"I need...(Y/N)," Kurapika said. He grabbed Leorio's suit jacket.
"I know, buddy." Leorio wrapped his arms around his best friend.
There was a soft knock on the door. Gon cracked the door open.
"Kurapika? Leorio? Everyone is ready," Gon said.
The stage was beautifully decorated. (Y/N)'s casket was surrounded by her favorite flowers. Kurapika stood behind the podium. All of the guests fixed their eyes on him. He took a deep breath before beginning his speech.
"My lovely (Y/N) left this world on July seventh. She was encircled by the love of her closest friends. (Y/N) and I shared the past two years together. I know that isn't a great deal of time, but it feels like we have known each other forever. I was introduced to (Y/N) by my dear friend, Doctor Leorio Paradinight. She volunteered at the children's hospital where he works. Reading to all of those beautiful children brought her happiness. I remember coming to visit her one day. She had no idea I was sitting at the back, watching her. I'll never forget the passion I saw in her eyes while all of the children surrounded her. That's when I fell in love with (Y/N)."
Kurapika paused for a few seconds to keep from crying.
"What I loved the most about (Y/N) was how supportive she was. Never once did I ask her for help. She always jumped in as if my goals were her own. She was the most selfless person I knew. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her knows exactly what I mean."
"(Y/N) loved to laugh. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a funny person. However, I still managed to make (Y/N) laugh."
A soft smile formed on Kurapika's face.
"(Y/N) was to be my wife. If you asked me, I'd tell you she was already my wife. We just didn't hold an official certificate. I'd give anything to have just a little more time with her."
"I would like to thank our dear friends who spent that last day with us. We have definitely been blessed with good friends."
Kurapika turned to look at the casket.
"(Y/N), I wish you a safe journey. Our fellow Kurta will be there to welcome you home. You have made this world a better place. I...I am not far behind you."
After the funeral, (Y/N)'s parents walked up to Kurapika. Their eyes were bloodshot. They scowled at Kurapika.
"If it weren't for you, our precious daughter would still be alive today! She was always chasing you around. I told her not to get involved with a hunter!" her father shouted.
Kurapika was taken aback.
"I...I'm so sorry."
Leorio noticed the commotion. He ran to block Kurapika from their view.
"Please. I understand you are grieving. It's only natural to want to take it out on someone. But please...not Kurapika. He loved your daughter more than anything."
(Y/N)'s parents looked down. Tears fell from their faces.
"We're sorry," (Y/N)'s mother said.
After the burial, Kurapika stood in front of the fresh gravesite. The soft breeze blew the scent of earth under his nose. He stared at (Y/N)'s tombstone. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around to see who it was.
"Kurapika, I'm so sorry. I still feel like this was my fault," Killua said. His cheeks were tear-stained.
Kurapika smiled at his younger friend.
"Killua, (Y/N) wants you to know that it was not your fault. You were simply trying to help her."
"How do you know?"
"She somehow managed to write me a letter before she passed."
"Really? She said that?"
"Yes."
"I miss her so much," Killua said.
"Killua, I want to thank you."
"For what?"
"For being such a good friend to (Y/N). She was very fond of you." Tears were welling up in Kurapika's eyes. "I'm sure she appreciates you keeping her secret."
"What secret?"
"I know about the baby. I read her diary."
"You...you know? I'm so sorry, Kurapika. I don't know what else to say. I'm not good at these things."
"It's fine. You have my sincere gratitude."
One Year Later
Kurapika walked up to (Y/N)'s gravesite holding a bouquet of flowers. The sun shone through the almost bare branches of a weeping cherry blossom tree. He kneeled to place the bouquet on her grave. He reached into the pocket of his suit jacket to take out her diary. He started to read it out loud.
Minutes later, a strong breeze blew through Kurapika's hair. He placed the diary down. He watched as the pages turned to an entry at the back of the book. He gasped when noticed the date.
"That's...that's today's date!" he shouted.
Kurapika immediately picked up the book. He began to read the entry.
Heaven is so beautiful. I spend every day walking through fields of cherry blossom trees. They are always in full bloom here.
I'm never alone. Kurapika's mother is always with me. She is the most amazing person I have ever met. The thing is, she never lets go of my baby girl! She is always telling me how much my baby looks like Kurapika. She's a proud grandmother.
The Kurta Clan are the sweetest people! They all welcomed me as soon as I arrived. I met Pairo. He is always talking about Kurapika. He can't wait to see him again. I also can't wait to see him. However, I want Kurapika to live a full life. I also want him to know he doesn't need to worry about anything. We are all doing fine here. Most of all, I want Kurapika to know everyone is proud of him. They don't blame him for what happened.
Kurapika smiled while a teardrop fell down his cheek. The wind blew in his ear. He could hear the sound of (Y/N) laughing.
