You are sitting in class, tapping your pencil on the desk while staring at the clock on the wall.
"C'mon...ring already," you say to yourself.
A few seconds later, the bell rings. You jump out of your seat and throw your bag over your shoulder.
You accidentally bump into another student in the hallway.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Are you okay?"
She straightens out her uniform. "I'm fine. What's the rush?"
"Today's my eighteenth birthday...I have a feeling my mom is planning something special for me."
She looks up at you. "Oh...I know you. We have the same class for third period."
"Oh...you noticed me?"
"Yes. You're the weirdo who sits all the way in the back, right?"
"Uh...yeah," you say.
"Good thing you sit back there. Nobody likes you."
A sweat drop forms on your forehead. "Oh...well...I guess I better get going. Sorry again."
You turn around to leave the building. You hold your abdomen in an attempt to stop the knots from forming. You usually feel them before walking into school; however, your recent interaction with another student leaves you feeling uneasy.
You think you might throw up before entering the train station. You take a few deep breaths.
"Good...false alarm," you say.
You pull out the rail pass from your wallet. You patiently wait in line for the train to arrive.
You find one empty seat on the train. You stand up to offer it to an elderly lady.
This is your favorite part of the day. You love knowing you're going home, a place you call your safezone. You also enjoy the magnificent scenery on the way home. You see a variety of buildings and trees full of cherry blossoms.
Once you step out of the train, you run the rest of the way to your house.
"Hi, mom! I'm home!" you call out as you take off your shoes.
To your surprise, the house is quiet. You furrow your brow as you walk to the kitchen. The lights are out. There's no sign of a birthday cake anywhere.
"Is it possible she forgot?"
You walk to your bedroom. Your jaw drops when you see that the room has been emptied. Your futon is neatly folded in the corner and all of your belongings are stored in boxes.
"What's going on?"
The knots in your stomach multiply as you walk around the house. You hear the screen door open in the back. You run to find out who it is.
"What are you doing here?" your stepfather asks you.
"I...umm...where's mom? Is she out getting my birthday present?"
He wears a stern look on his face. "Your birthday present? Hmph. Didn't you see your room?"
"Yeah. Why is it empty?"
"Because you don't live here anymore."
You crinkle your forehead. "Uh...what do you mean?"
"Son...get out of this house before I call the authorities." he points at you.
You take a step back. Your heart rate increases. "But...why?"
He walks closer to you. "You're eighteen now. It's time for you to leave."
"But...I haven't finished highschool yet."
"You can get a job. You'll be fine."
"Can I talk to mom first? I want to hear this from her."
He raises his right hand and punches you in the face. You fall down, holding the left side of your face. You look at your hand, which is covered in blood.
"You didn't have to punch me." You get up from the floor. "Bastard."
You try to get a hold of your mom while you walk down your street. It goes straight to voicemail.
"Hey, mom. It's me. I just got thrown out of the house. I just want to know why. Please...call me."
You put your phone back inside your bag. You were able to pack a bag with some necessities before you left.
You keep walking until you reach a bench. You sigh as you sit down.
You people watch for the next few hours. You watch as happy couples and friends walk past you.
Must be nice to have people who care about you.
The sun starts to set. Your stomach growls, reminding you it's dinnertime. You reach into your bag for your wallet. You count your money.
"Damn. If I knew I was getting kicked out, I wouldn't have spent all my money on manga last weekend. I gotta make this last."
You get up to walk to the nearest convenience store. You grab a rice ball and a can of soda.
"Hello, my name is (Y/N). I'm looking for a job. Are you hiring?" you ask the lady at the cash register.
"No, sorry. We just hired someone last week."
"Oh. Thanks anyway." You bow before walking out of the store.
You find your bench and sit back down. Before opening the rice ball, you check your phone.
Why isn't mom calling me back? Doesn't she want to wish me a happy birthday?
You look up at the starry sky. A street lamp illuminates the street in front of you. Less people are walking by as it gets later in the evening. You eat the rice ball in three bites, wishing you had more. A cool wind blows in your direction. You tighten your collar.
More hours pass by. With nothing else to do but think, you imagine what will become of your life.
Tears well up in your eyes. You've never cried before. Your stepfather always told you it was a sign of weakness. Now that he's not a part of your life anymore, you think you might give it a try.
Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of two men arguing in the distance. You look to your right. You watch as they walk down the hill. You try to hear what they're arguing about.
You scoot over in the bench when you realize that they're about to sit down next to you.
Both of them are dressed in suits. The blonde sits next to you. He looks like he's about your age. The other man looks much older with dark hair and round glasses. He takes the seat next to the blonde.
"We wouldn't have missed the train if you weren't such a lush," the blonde says.
The tall man points a finger at him. "Stop name calling! Nobody asked you to stay."
The blonde closes his eyes. "Who else is going to make sure you get home safely?"
"I don't need you." The tall man looks away.
"Apparently, you do. Who knows where you'd end up."
"In someone's bed...getting laid."
"Your lack of class still baffles me."
"Anyway...what should we do now? Want me to call a cab?"
Your phone rings. They're attention is now focused on you.
"I'm sorry," you say. You take your phone and walk away.
"Hey, mom? What took you so long to call me back?"
"Where are you? Are you okay?"
"No, I'm not okay. I'm sitting on a bench with hardly any money and no place to sleep. Why did I get kicked out?"
"Your father says it will be good for you," your mother says.
"That bastard is not my father."
"Stop disrespecting him. He knows what's best for you."
"Oh, yeah? A little notice would've been nice. C'mon, mom. I don't want to spend the night on the streets. It's cold out and I'm hungry."
"I'm sorry, (Y/N). I gotta go."
"Mom? Mom?"
You hear beeping. "Dammit! She didn't even wish me a happy birthday. What did I do to deserve this?"
You take your seat back on the bench.
"Sounds like you're having a shitty night, too," the tall man says.
"Uh...yeah. You could say that."
"You might want to put some ice on your eye."
You touch your eye, feeling the bump that has formed. You wince.
A concerned look crosses the blonde's face as he looks in your direction. "Is there anything we can do to help?"
You shake your head. "No."
"You're a student, right?" he asks you when he notices your uniform.
"Yes. I'm in my senior year."
"May I ask why you're out late on a school night?"
You're about to answer when the tall man interrupts.
"Leave the guy alone, Kurapika. You're not his mother."
"It's fine," you say. "Today is actually my birthday."
"Oh, I see. So you're out celebrating?" the blonde asks you.
"Uh...not exactly. My parents kicked me out."
Their eyes widen.
"Are you a delinquent?" the tall man asks you.
You shake your head. "No. I'm actually a good guy. I get good grades, do my chores, and obey my parents."
"Then why would they kick you out?" the blonde asks.
You shrug your shoulders. "I wish I knew."
"Where will you be sleeping tonight?"
You point down at the bench. "Right here."
The blonde extends his hand. "My name is Kurapika."
"The name's Leorio," the tall man shouts out.
You shake Kurapika's hand. "My name is (Y/N). It's nice to meet you. To be honest, I've never talked to anyone like this before. I'm actually shy."
Kurapika smiles at you. You feel butterflies fluttering inside your stomach, but this time, it's not from anxiety.
"Don't you have any friends at school?" Kurapika asks you.
"No. I've always been the kid who sits in the back of class and gets trash thrown at them."
Kurapika shakes his head in disapproval.
Leorio stands up from the bench and stretches. "Hey...are we going to sit here all night? I'd like to go home."
"Right," says Kurapika. He stands up and faces you. "Would you like to stay with us tonight?"
You raise your eyebrows. "Really?"
"Yes. I'm good at reading people. I can tell you're a good person in need of a little help."
"But...I'd hate to impose. I'm sure you and your boyfriend would like some privacy."
Leorio grabs his abdomen and pretends to throw up. "You think Kurapika is my boyfriend? Tch...he wishes."
Kurapika rolls his eyes. "Please...I have high standards."
You smile as a sense of relief flows through you. You stand up from the bench and grab your bag. "Well...it sure beats sleeping on this bench tonight. Thank you both so much."
You take your shoes off as soon as you enter the apartment. You set your bag down and look around.
"Wow...this is your place? It's amazing."
"Thank you. It's quaint, but to be honest, we don't spend much time here."
You look at the city below through the floor to ceiling windows. "I'd never leave this place if I lived here. I hate the world down there."
Kurapika stands next to you. "The world isn't as bad as you think. I've met some good people."
You glance at Kurapika. "Me too."
Kurapika places his hand on your shoulder. "Make yourself comfortable. I'll find some extra blankets for you." He turns to leave.
"Hey, Kurapika? Do you mind me asking what you do for a living? I mean...you look like you're my age. I apologize if I'm being rude."
Kurapika turns back to you. "You're not being rude at all. It's a fair question." Kurapika puts his hands in his pockets. "I'm only a year older than you. I turned nineteen last month. And I'm a hunter. I passed the exam when I was seventeen."
Your mouth hangs open. "You're a hunter?"
Kurapika nods.
"Wow. I've never met a hunter before."
"Leorio is also a hunter...though barely."
Leorio hands you an ice pack, water, and some ibuprofen. "Hey, I heard that!"
You place the ice pack on your face. "Thanks!"
"No problem." Leorio yawns. "I'm going to bed. Don't try to rob us, (Y/N). Remember...we're hunters."
You let out a laugh. "No need to worry about me."
Leorio leaves the two of you alone. You glance at Kurapika.
Why do I keep getting these butterflies in my stomach?
"Let me find those blankets for you," Kurapika says before walking away from you.
You sit on the couch. Kurapika walks back minutes later holding a stack of pillows, blankets, and towels. He places them on the couch next to you.
"You're more than welcome to use my shower. Do you need your school uniform washed?"
You stare at nothing. "I don't think I'm going back."
Kurapika raises an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't you go back?"
"To be honest, I get this gut-wrenching feeling every time I walk into that building," you answer, holding your abdomen.
"But...you're so close to graduating."
"You don't know how bad it is, Kurapika. The other students go out of their way to humiliate me. I can't even count on the teachers to help. It's like they don't want to be bothered."
"Have you talked to your parents about this?"
"Yeah. Mom just shrugged it off. I don't dare mention it to my stepfather."
"Stepfather? What about your biological father? Is he still in your life?"
"Nope. He left us when I was a kid. My mom and I were close until my stepfather came along. He kinda ruined my relationship with her. But you know...it didn't bother me. He made her happy and that's all I cared about."
Kurapika offers you a soft smile. "You're a very selfless person." He glares into you as if he's searching your soul. "I'll make a deal with you. You can stay here as long as you'd like. My only condition is that you'll graduate highschool."
You almost fall off the couch. "Wait...are you serious?"
Kurapika nods.
"In that case, yes! Who knows...maybe I'll be a hunter like you one day."
Kurapika gets up to leave. "Sleep well. Oh...and happy birthday."
The corners of your lips move upward into a grateful smile. "Thank you. You're the first person to tell me."
You watch as Kurapika walks away. "Hey, Kurapika? Where are your parents? I'm sure they're proud of you."
A look of sadness crosses his face. "That's a story for another day."
The year quickly passes and before you know it, it's almost March. The signs congratulating seniors at school reminds you of how close you are to graduation.
Kurapika waits for you at the front of the school. The anxious feeling in your stomach subsides as soon as you see him.
You've had a lot less anxiety since meeting Kurapika. He's been helping you train for the hunter exam which has increased your confidence.
The bullies still try to pick fights with you, but you now have the courage to stand up for yourself.
"Never fight unless absolutely necessary." You hear Kurapika's words repeat in your head.
"(Y/N)!" Kurapika shouts as he sees you. "You look deep in thought. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah. Another day down." You walk beside Kurapika.
You feel another pair of eyes on you.
"(Y/N)! Wait up!" a girl shouts behind you.
You turn around to see who it is. You recognize your pretty classmate immediately.
She catches her breath. "You left this in class." She hands you a notebook. "Don't worry...I didn't read it."
You take your notebook from her. "Thanks a lot."
She smiles at you. A hint of pink appears on her cheeks. "No problem. Have a nice evening."
You smile back at her. "You, too."
"Well...see you around." She waves before turning around to leave.
"Yeah." You wave back.
You turn around and continue to walk alongside Kurapika. You notice he's being extra quiet.
"Is she a friend of yours?" Kurapika finally asks you.
"No."
"A girlfriend?"
"Uh...no. I barely know her. I'm surprised she even knew my name."
"I see." Kurapika looks down. "Do you have a girlfriend?"
You jump back. "Me? A girlfriend? You're funny, Kurapika."
"It's an honest question."
You continue to walk, looking straight ahead.
"None of those girls ever interested me. Now that I think of it, I'm almost nineteen and I never even gave them a second thought," you say.
It's a beautiful day and the two of you have decided to walk most of the way back home. You stop dead in your tracks when you notice a familiar street.
"Is everything alright, (Y/N)?"
"Uh...this used to be my street."
Kurapika looks down the quiet narrow street. "Oh. Would you like to visit your mother? I'm sure she'd like to see you."
"Nah. She hasn't even called me. I'm sure she's glad I'm out of her life."
Kurapika nudges you. "Don't be ridiculous. You're her son. Besides, don't you want to invite her to your graduation?"
"I guess you're right," you say. Your face brightens. "Actually, I'm more excited for her to meet you."
The two of you continue to walk down the street until you arrive at your house. You take a deep breath before walking to the front door.
Tears stream down your mother's face as soon as she sees you.
"(Y/N)! My beautiful boy!" She wraps her arms around you. "You look well."
You hug her back. "Mom, I've missed you. Why haven't you called?"
She pulls away and shakes her head. "Every time I tried, your stepfather would take the phone away from me."
"Why do you allow him to control your life? I'm family...flesh and blood."
She hangs her head. "Because he's good to me."
The three of you remain silent for a few minutes before you hear the back sliding door open. You feel your heart pound in your chest when you see your stepfather walk in.
"Oh...it's you. What the hell do you want? Money?"
"No. I'm here to invite mom to my graduation." You scowl, remembering the last interaction you had with him.
"Hmph. Who's that?" he asks, motioning toward Kurapika.
Your heart flutters when you look back at Kurapika. You return your attention to your mother. "Mom? Are you going to invite us in? There's someone special I want you to meet."
You're about to take your shoes off when your stepfather stops you.
"No. You're not invited in. We knew you were different. Get out of here."
You clench your jaw while making a fist. You raise your right arm. Kurapika gently pushes it back down.
"(Y/N), he's not worth it. Let's go."
The two of you leave the house without looking back. You feel hot tears threatening to fall down your cheeks. Kurapika grabs your shoulders.
"Hey, don't hold back your tears for my sake. Go ahead and cry."
You bury your face into Kurapika's shoulder and allow yourself to finally cry. All of those tears you've held back for years flood down your face, soaking Kurapika's suit jacket. He wraps his arms around you, stroking your back with his right hand. He patiently waits for you to let out your emotions.
"You know what? I probably would've killed myself if I never met you," you say, sobbing.
Kurapika pulls away from you. "No, you wouldn't have."
You wipe your tears away with the back of your hand. "How do you know?"
"You don't give up easily. That night you told me you were going to quit school, I knew you didn't mean it. Sure...that would've been the easy way out. But you...you kept going. You suppressed your anxiety and fought through it. Simply put...you're a fighter."
Instead of responding, you look down and kick a rock. Kurapika smiles.
"The people who keep quiet are the ones who have the most to say. However, you don't say anything because you fear no one will understand you. Am I right?"
You look at Kurapika with widened eyes. "Y...yes."
Kurapika nods. "You know you can tell me anything. Do not fear judgment. You won't receive any from me."
"Thank you, Kurapika."
You both continue to walk. You glance at Kurapika. The sun shines through his blonde hair.
"Speaking of quiet people...you don't say much either. What's your story?"
"I guess we've known each other long enough for you to know."
Kurapika tells you his story about losing his clan.
"No way...how do you hold in all your anger? My problems are the size of a mustard seed compared to yours. I admire you," you say.
Later that evening, you close your textbook and yawn. "Finally...all done. I think I'm going to bed early tonight."
"Yes, you had a long day." Kurapika places a cup of tea in front of you.
You blow into the mug before taking a sip. Kurapika spreads your blankets out on the couch. He stops midway.
"Everything okay?" you ask him.
"You know...you've been living with us for almost a year now and we haven't bought you your own futon. How about you take my bed for the night? You deserve a good night's rest."
You set your mug down. "Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. Go right ahead."
After you wash up for the night, you settle into Kurapika's soft mattress. A moan escapes your lips as if all your problems just vanished.
Kurapika walks into his room to grab his pajamas.
"Hey, Kurapika? I feel bad for taking your bed. It's big enough for the both of us. Why don't we share?"
"Are you sure you don't mind?"
You scoot over, making room for him. "Of course not."
Kurapika crawls into the bed after changing into his pajamas.
You turn to face him. The moonlight illuminates the room.
"Thanks again for sharing your story with me," you say.
Kurapika turns onto his side to face you. "Of course."
"You know...I've been thinking. You've done so much for me this past year. I want to pay you back."
"That's not necessary."
"But...I can't pay you with money. So instead, I'm going to help you retrieve the eyes of your people."
Kurapika stares at you with grateful eyes.
"That's the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever offered me. However, I can't accept it. I won't put you in that kind of danger."
You've never been this close up to Kurapika before. You notice all of his features. Especially his eyes. They turn a deep scarlet right in front of you.
"Kurapika...your eyes!"
"Shh...don't be afraid.
You instinctively place your hand on his cheek. He closes his eyes, enjoying your touch.
You feel heat rise to your cheeks.
What's this feeling?
He places his hand over yours. "Just let yourself go."
Is he reading my mind?
You move closer to Kurapika. You can smell his natural scent. He still has his eyes closed, waiting for your next move. You move your hand down his muscular arm. You take a deep breath before closing your eyes and pressing your lips against his.
You wait a few seconds before opening your eyes. Kurapika still has his eyes closed. You close yours again. You slightly part your lips. You wait a few more seconds before swiping his lower lip with your tongue. You wait for Kurapika to make the next move.
To your surprise, Kurapika wraps his arm around your waist and pulls himself on top of you. His lips never leave yours. You need air, but you're afraid to move. You don't want this moment to end.
Kurapika pulls away, leaving you gasping for breath. You pull him back in, afraid he'll leave. He positions himself back on top of you. You feel his bangs tickle your forehead as he moves his face closer to yours. His lips meet yours again. You immediately part your lips, hoping Kurapika will give you more.
Your eyes shoot open when you feel his tongue glide over yours. Kurapika moans against your mouth as he deepens the kiss. You kiss him back with an urgent need. You grab the back of his head as you match his movements.
You pull your pelvis up, noticing Kurapika is as excited as you are.
All of your insecurities are gone in a flash as you realize why you have been feeling different for most of your teenage life.
Kurapika nibbles your lower lip. You tug at his pajama top. He takes your hint and pulls away to take it off. You take yours off as well. He rests his weight on top of you, his chest hot against yours.
Instead of going back to your lips, Kurapika places his mouth against your neck, licking down to your collarbone. He looks at you with lustful eyes.
You nod, giving him permission to proceed. You close your eyes. You feel cold for a brief moment as Kurapika gets off of you. You hear him fumble around in his bedside drawer. You wait patiently as he rips open a condom wrapper and squirts lubricate on his hand.
Kurapika presses his mouth against your ear. "Stop me if you feel any pain."
You nod. A thrilling shiver runs down your spine as Kurapika pulls down your pajama pants. He spreads your legs. Seconds later, he penetrates you with the head of his penis. You jolt back, not expecting to feel so much pain.
"We don't have to go any further if you feel uncomfortable," says Kurapika.
You shake your head. "No...no. Please...keep going."
Kurapika pushes back into you, stopping halfway.
You wince from the tearing pain. Sweat drops form on your forehead.
"You're too tense. Relax," says Kurapika.
You take a deep breath. Kurapika holds you until you adjust. He pulls back before going deeper. The pain subsides with each small thrust, and you find yourself pulling him in deeper until he is completely inside of you.
Kurapika keeps his thrusts gentle, filling you with a warmth you never knew existed. You can't imagine sharing this intimate moment with anyone else.
Kurapika is able to pick up the pace and thrust into a spot that sends you straight to Utopia. You explode all over your chest and Kurapika's.
Kurapika moans through clenched teeth as he reaches his climax. You've never seen a more beautiful sight. His drop earring shines in the moonlight. He pulls out, leaving you feeling empty. He falls on top of you, not caring about the sticky mess you made.
He breathes heavily against you. You hear his rapid heartbeat. The sound echoes through your soul.
"That...was...amazing," says Kurapika.
You comb his sweaty blonde hair with your fingers.
"Kurapika, I love you."
He lifts his head to face you. "I love you, too."
The next morning, Leorio gently knocks on Kurapika's door.
"Hey, there's breakfast on the table."
You slowly raise your head, blinking a few times. You blush as soon as you see Leorio standing at the door. He covers his eyes and leaves the room.
You look at Kurapika, who is still sleeping soundly. A smile spreads across your face as you remember the details of last night. You kiss him on the cheek before crawling out of bed. Kurapika stops you.
"Don't get up yet. Leorio can wait. I want to hold you a little longer."
You don't object. You take your place back next to Kurapika, allowing him to hold you against him. A few minutes later, your bladder screams at you. You curse under your breath as you pull away from Kurapika to use the bathroom.
By the time you return, Kurapika is already sitting in bed, pulling on a shirt.
You and Kurapika walk hand in hand to the table where Leorio is eating breakfast. He eyes the two of you.
"So...how was your night?" he asks Kurapika.
Kurapika pours you a cup of coffee. "I don't think there's a word in the dictionary that defines how wonderful my night was."
"Damn. That good, huh?"
You and Kurapika smile at each other.
Later in March, you graduate high school. Kurapika and Leorio throw you a small party.
After another blissful night with Kurapika, you're surprised to find the bed empty when you wake up. You throw the covers off and run to find him.
You see Leorio drinking a cup of coffee at the kitchen counter.
"Where's Kurapika? Have you seen him?"
"He left as I was coming back from work. He got an urgent call about some intel on a pair of scarlet eyes so he left. He told me to tell you not to worry," says Leorio.
You feel yourself about to panic. "No...you have to tell me where he went. I can't let anything happen to him."
Leorio senses your apprehension. He grabs your shoulders. "Listen...Kurapika is strong. He's been in dangerous situations in the past. There's no need for you to worry."
"No. Leorio, you need to tell me where he is. I know you know!" You grab his chest.
You feel your lungs deflate as you struggle to breathe.
Even though he's still just a medical student, Leorio gets into physician mode and assesses you.
"Hey...pull yourself together. I'll tell you where you can find him if you calm down."
Your breathing returns to normal as Leorio gives you Kurapika's location. You rush to get ready and run out the door.
You take the train as far as it will go. This area is new to you and you have to run the rest of the way. The dark clouds in the sky threaten to pour rain on you.
You stop to take in your surroundings. Abandoned buildings line either side of the littered street. You run to a group of people standing next to one of the buildings. You ignore the syringes in their hands.
"Have you seen a blonde man, about five seven, most likely wearing a suit?"
They give you a puzzled look and go back to their activities.
"Dammit!" You kick a door to one of the buildings.
You hear the faint sound of someone calling your name.
"Kurapika?" you call back.
You run inside the building, almost falling through the hole in the middle.
You hear your name again. You carefully follow the sound, stepping on broken glass and rotten pieces of wood. You ignore the squeaking sound of rats scurrying about.
You find an empty room. A shadowy figure is lying on the floor. You recognize him immediately.
"Kurapika!" You run, kneeling next to him.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing here?" Kurapika asks you with a hoarse voice.
You stare at the pale Kurta. A pool of blood surrounds him, filling your nose with the smell of copper. He has his hand over his abdomen.
"Don't talk, Kurapika. You're hurt." You grab his hand, placing his cold fingers against your lips.
"My...stomach...will you check it?" He winces.
You gently place his hand back down. You unbutton his suit jacket and untuck his blood-stained white shirt. Your heart sinks to your stomach when you see Kurapika's small intestine. You swallow hard.
"It's...fine," you lie.
Kurapika closes his eyes.
"No! Keep your eyes open. Please," you say.
Kurapika slowly opens his eyes. "You're right...I can't see your face with my eyes closed. I'm just...very tired."
You pull out your phone to call an ambulance. You curse at them when they tell you they don't come to that part of town. Your next call is to Leorio. He informs you that he's on his way.
You turn your attention back to Kurapika. You reach down to kiss his lips, tasting his blood.
"(Y/N), I love you."
You pull your eyebrows close together as hot tears well up in your eyes.
"No, Kurapika. You're not going to tell me goodbye. You're not going anywhere...do you hear me?"
"But...I can see the lights when I close my eyes."
"Then we'll just have to make sure you don't close your eyes." You reach into your bag and pull out a notebook. "Hey, Kurapika? Remember when that girl gave me back my notebook? Well, I was glad she didn't read it because it was actually my journal. I wrote a lot about you in it."
Kurapika looks at you with half-lidded eyes. "I'd love to hear what you wrote about me."
You flip through the pages to find the entry you wrote the day after meeting Kurapika. You clear your throat.
Yesterday my parents kicked me out of the house without warning. In school, they make us write about our life plans and penalize us for not turning them in on time. I always had trouble with that. I mean, how can I just come up with a plan for the future when I don't even know who I am now? I feel so...different.
I sat on a bench and watched as people went about their day. Some would smile at me, but most would just pass by, not knowing that the person they just passed is thinking about ending their own life.
That night, I met my first two friends. At least, I think they're my friends. They allowed me into their home, rent free, with the condition that I continue to go to school.
There's something about Kurapika. Something sparked inside of me the moment he shook my hand. I can't describe it, but...I want to get to know him better. All I know is that he's a hunter. He has these eyes that I'm afraid to look into for the fear that I'll drown if I look too deep. Then again, maybe I want to drown in those eyes.
Anyway, I'm feeling a lot better today. The thought of suicide crossed my mind once more, but then I thought, what if Heaven doesn't accept me for leaving behind the angel that was sent for me? The angel that goes by the name, Kurapika.
You close your notebook and watch as a tear slides down the corner of Kurapika's eye.
"That sounded like...music. Thank you for staying alive for me."
You are quickly pushed to the side as Leorio storms in and begins to assess Kurapika. You tell him your findings and he nods, concentrating on the task at hand. You watch as he quickly wraps Kurapika's abdomen.
"Hey, I left my car running and I don't like the way those sketchy people were eyeing it. Run out there and wait for us. I got Kurapika...don't worry."
You nod before running back outside. You leave the back passenger door open for Kurapika.
Minutes later, you see Leorio running out of the building with Kurapika in his arms. He carefully places him in the back of the car before racing to the nearest hospital.
You feel a thousand knots in your stomach as you wait for the surgeon to give you an update on Kurapika's condition. Leorio stares blankly at nothing.
Minutes later, the surgeon walks into the waiting room. You and Leorio jolt up and wait for the surgeon to speak.
"Kurapika's family?" the surgeon asks you and Leorio.
"Yes!" you shout. "How is he?"
The surgeon shakes his head. You immediately fall to your knees.
Leorio swallows hard. "Did he make it?'
"He made it...barely. He's in stable condition. You can see him in the ICU."
Leorio helps you back on your feet and the two of you take the elevator to see Kurapika.
As soon as you walk into Kurapika's room, you feel overwhelmed by the amount of wires and tubes that are connected to him. Leorio eases you, explaining the purpose of each one.
"Kurapika?" you ask as you walk closer to the bed.
Leorio places his hand on your shoulder. "He's on some heavy pain medicine. He might be out for a while."
"Well...I'm not leaving until he wakes up."
That night, the nurse brings you a pillow and a blanket.
"I have an extra tray if you'd like," she offers you.
You shake your head. "No, thank you."
"I can tell you're worried about him. Rest assured...he's doing better than we expected."
You turn your head and smile in Kurapika's direction. "He's tough."
"What's your relation with him?"
You reach into your pocket and pull out a small box. "He's my husband." You open the box and take out the pair of gold rings. You place one on your finger. You stand up and place the other one on Kurapika's left ring finger.
The nurse covers her mouth as she gasps. "Oh my goodness! That's the sweetest thing I've ever witnessed!"
Kurapika moves his head in your direction. "(Y/N)? Is that you?"
Tears stream down your cheeks as you feel a sense of relief. "Yes, my love. How are you feeling?"
"Better now." Kurapika smiles. His forehead crinkles when he feels something on his finger. He lifts up his left hand. "What's this?"
You show him your left hand. "It's a wedding ring. I was hoping we'd get married as soon as you got better."
"Nothing would make me happier, my angel."
You remember the journal entry you read to Kurapika. "I'm your angel?"
Kurapika places his hand on yours. "Yes. I never told you, but you saved me as well. I filled my life with work to avoid the emptiness I felt when I was alone. I made wonderful friends who helped shoulder the burden; however, nothing filled me with more happiness than you." He squeezes your hand. "Those lights I saw kept threatening to take me away, but I fought hard against them. I wasn't ready to leave you. I'm alive because of you, (Y/N)."
The nurse cries as she leaves the room.
You press your lips against Kurapika's.
Six months later
You and Kurapika run down the aisle. The sounds of clapping and laughter fills the air. You stop to stare at your new husband. You silently thank your parents for kicking you out that day. If it had not been for them, you would have never met the man who makes your life worth living.
He presses his lips against your ear. "I couldn't have conjured a better person to spend my life with."
