You are sitting in class, chewing your pencil while staring at the clock on the wall.
"I wish it would just ring already," you say to yourself.
A few seconds later, the bell rings. You jump out of your seat and throw your bag over your shoulder.
You accidentally bump into another student in the hallway.
"Oh, sorry about that." You notice she's one of the popular girls.
She straightens out her uniform. "I'm fine. What's the rush?"
"Today's my eighteenth birthday...I have a feeling my mom is planning something special for me."
She looks up at you. "Oh...I know you. We have the same class for third period."
"Oh...you're right!"
"Yeah. You're the weird girl who sits all the way in the back, right?"
"I...um...guess so," you say, stepping backwards.
"Good thing you sit back there. Nobody likes you."
You play with the hem of your uniform skirt. "Oh...well...I should get going."
You turn around to leave the building. You hold your abdomen in an attempt to stop the knots from forming. You usually feel them before walking into school; however, your recent interaction with another student leaves you feeling uneasy.
You think you might throw up before entering the train station. You take a few deep breaths.
"Thank goodness...false alarm," you say.
You pull out the rail pass from your wallet. You patiently wait in line for the train to arrive.
You find one empty seat on the train and sit down.
This is your favorite part of the day. You love knowing you're going home, a place you call your safezone. You also enjoy the magnificent scenery on the way home. You see a variety of buildings and trees full of cherry blossoms.
Once you step out of the train, you run the rest of the way to your house.
"Hi, mom! I'm home!" you call out as you take off your shoes.
To your surprise, the house is quiet. You furrow your brow as you walk to the kitchen. The lights are out. There's no sign of a birthday cake anywhere.
"Is it possible she forgot?"
You walk to your bedroom. Your jaw drops when you see that the room has been emptied. Your futon is neatly folded in the corner and all of your belongings are stored in boxes.
"What's going on?"
The knots in your stomach multiply as you walk around the house. You hear the screen door open in the back. You run to find out who it is.
"What are you doing here?" your stepfather asks you.
"I...umm...where's mom? Is she out getting my birthday present?"
He wears a stern look on his face. "Your birthday present? Hmph. Didn't you see your room?"
"Yeah. Why is it empty?"
"Because you don't live here anymore."
You crinkle your forehead. "Uh...what do you mean?"
"I've been counting down the days until you turned eighteen," he says with a sly smile.
You take a step back. Your heart rate increases. "But...why?"
He walks closer to you. "You're an adult now. You can finally leave."
"But...I haven't finished highschool yet."
"You're a pretty girl. Get a job. You'll be fine."
"Can I talk to mom first? I want to hear this from her."
He raises his right hand and slaps you across the face. You fall down, holding the left side of your face.
"You didn't have to hit me." You get up from the floor. "Bastard."
You try to get a hold of your mom while you walk down your street. It goes straight to voicemail.
"Hey, mom. It's me. I just got thrown out of the house. I just want to know why. Please...call me."
You put your phone back inside your bag. You were able to pack a bag with some necessities before you left.
You keep walking until you reach a bench. You sigh as you sit down.
You people watch for the next few hours. You watch as happy couples and friends walk past you.
Must be nice to have people who care about you.
The sun starts to set. Your stomach growls, reminding you it's dinnertime. You reach into your bag for your wallet. You count your money.
"If I knew I was getting kicked out, I wouldn't have spent all my money on clothes last weekend. I gotta make this last."
You get up to walk to the nearest convenience store. You grab a rice ball and a can of soda.
"Hello, my name is (Y/N). I'm looking for a job. Are you hiring?" you ask the lady at the cash register.
"No, sorry. We just hired someone last week."
"Oh. Thanks anyway." You bow before walking out of the store.
You find your bench and sit back down. Before opening the rice ball, you check your phone.
Why isn't mom calling me back? Doesn't she want to wish me a happy birthday?
You look up at the starry sky. A street lamp illuminates the street in front of you. Less people are walking by as it gets later in the evening. You eat the rice ball in three bites. A cool wind blows in your direction. You pull your sweater tight over your neck.
More hours pass by. With nothing else to do but think, you imagine what will become of your life.
Tears well up in your eyes. You can't figure out why your stepfather threw you out and why your mom won't call you back.
Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of two men arguing in the distance. You look to your right. You watch as they walk down the hill. You try to hear what they're arguing about.
You scoot over in the bench when you realize that they're about to sit down next to you.
Both of them are dressed in suits. The blonde sits next to you. He looks like he's about your age. The other man looks much older with dark hair and round glasses. He takes the seat next to the blonde.
"We wouldn't have missed the train if you weren't such a lush," the blonde says.
The tall man points a finger at him. "Stop name calling! Nobody asked you to stay."
The blonde closes his eyes. "Who else is going to make sure you get home safely?"
"I don't need you." The tall man looks away.
"Apparently, you do. Who knows where you'd end up."
"In someone's bed...getting laid."
"Your lack of class still baffles me."
"Anyway...what should we do now? Want me to call a cab?"
Your phone rings. They're attention is now focused on you.
"I'm sorry," you say. You take your phone and walk away.
"Hey, mom?"
"Where are you? Are you okay?"
"It's good to hear your voice. No, I'm not okay. I'm sitting alone on a bench. Why did I get kicked out?"
"Your father says it will be good for you," your mother says.
"That bastard is not my father."
"Stop disrespecting him. He knows what's best for you."
"Yeah? Then why did he slap me in the face? Mom, please. I don't want to spend the night on the streets. It's cold out and I'm hungry."
"I'm sorry, (Y/N). I gotta go."
"Mom? Mom?"
You hear beeping. "She didn't even wish me a happy birthday. What did I do to deserve this?"
You take your seat back on the bench.
"Sounds like you're having a shitty night, too," the tall man says.
"Uh...yeah." You scoot all the way to the arm of the bench.
"You might want to put some ice on your face."
You wince as you touch your face.
A concerned look crosses the blonde's face as he looks in your direction. "Is there anything we can do to help?"
You shake your head. "No."
"You're a student, right?" he asks you when he notices your uniform.
"Uh...yes. I'm in my senior year."
"May I ask why you're out late on a school night?"
You're about to answer when the tall man interrupts.
"Leave the girl alone, Kurapika. You're not her mother."
"It's fine," you say. "Today is actually my birthday."
"Oh, I see. So you're out celebrating?" the blonde asks you.
"Uh...not exactly. My parents kicked me out."
Their eyes widen.
"Are you a delinquent?" the tall man asks you.
You shake your head. "No. I'm actually a good girl. I get good grades, do my chores, and obey my parents."
"Then why would they kick you out?" the blonde asks.
You shrug your shoulders. "I wish I knew."
"Where will you be sleeping tonight?"
You look at your surroundings. "I guess...right here."
The blonde extends his hand. "My name is Kurapika."
"The name's Leorio," the tall man shouts out.
You shake Kurapika's hand. "My name is (Y/N). It's a pleasure to meet you."
Kurapika smiles at you. You feel butterflies fluttering inside your stomach, but this time, it's not from anxiety.
"Don't you have any friends at school?" Kurapika asks you.
"No. None of the other girls like me. They make fun of the way I look."
Kurapika shakes his head in disapproval.
Leorio stands up from the bench and stretches. "Hey...are we going to sit here all night? I'd like to go home."
"Right," says Kurapika. He stands up and faces you. "Would you like to stay with us tonight?"
You pull down the hem of your skirt. "I couldn't."
Leorio nudges Kurapika. "This girl isn't going to stay the night with two men she just met."
"Uh...I guess it doesn't look right. But we can't just leave her out here all alone. She's safer with us." Kurapika holds his chin. He turns to face you. "What would it take to convince you?"
"To be honest, you both look like nice people. I'm just...scared."
Kurapika reaches behind his back for his bokken. He hands you the pair of wooden swords. "Here. If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can beat us up with these."
You slide your hand over your new weapon. You look up at Kurapika. "Why do you want to help me?"
"I can tell you're a good person in need of a little help."
"But...I have nothing to give you in return."
"And we aren't asking for anything in return."
You tuck some hair behind your ear. "Okay. I'll stay with you."
You take your shoes off as soon as you enter the apartment. You set your bag down and look around.
"Wow...your apartment is very beautiful."
"Thank you. It's quaint, but to be honest, we don't spend much time here."
You look at the city below through the floor to ceiling windows. "This place is perfect for escaping the terrible world below."
Kurapika stands next to you. "The world isn't as bad as you think. I've met some good people."
You glance at Kurapika. "Yeah...I met a few today."
Kurapika places his hand on your shoulder. You feel yourself blush.
"Make yourself comfortable. I'll find some extra blankets for you." Kurapika turns to leave.
"Uh...Kurapika? I don't mean to be rude, but what do you do for a living? You don't have to answer. I'm just curious because you look like you're my age."
Kurapika turns back to you. "You're not being rude at all. It's a fair question." Kurapika puts his hands in his pockets. "I'm only a year older than you. I turned nineteen last month. And I'm a hunter. I passed the exam when I was seventeen."
Your mouth hangs open. "You're a hunter?"
Kurapika nods. "Leorio is also a hunter...though barely."
Leorio hands you an ice pack. "Hey, I heard that, Kurapika!"
You place the ice pack on your face. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it," says Leorio as he turns to leave.
You turn your attention back to Kurapika. You feel the butterflies again.
"Wow. You must be very strong. Strong enough to defend yourself against a pair of wooden swords," you say.
Kurapika lets out a laugh. "I promise you...you can do some damage with those. Please don't be afraid of us."
You place your hand on your abdomen to keep the butterflies from fluttering. "I'm not."
"Let me find those blankets for you," Kurapika says before walking away from you.
You sit on the couch. Kurapika walks back minutes later holding a stack of pillows, blankets, and towels. He places them on the couch next to you.
"You're more than welcome to use my shower. Do you need your school uniform washed?"
You stare at nothing. "I don't think I'm going back."
Kurapika raises an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't you go back?"
"To be honest, I'm tired of those girls bullying me."
"But...you're so close to graduating."
"You don't know how bad it is, Kurapika. They go out of their way to humiliate me. I can't even count on the teachers to help. It's like they don't want to be bothered."
"Have you talked to your parents about this?"
"Yes. My mom says it's part of growing up. And I'm not that comfortable around my stepfather to mention it to him."
"Stepfather? What about your biological father? Is he still in your life?"
"No. He left us when I was a little girl. My mom and I were close until my stepfather came along. It doesn't bother me because he makes her happy. That's all I care about."
Kurapika offers you a soft smile. "You're a very selfless person." He glares into you as if he's searching your soul. "I'll make a deal with you. You can stay here as long as you'd like. My only condition is that you'll graduate highschool."
Your eyes widen. "Really?"
Kurapika nods. "If you're comfortable."
"Thank you very much. I promise not to get in the way."
Kurapika gets up to leave. "Sleep well. Oh...and happy birthday."
The corners of your lips move upward into a grateful smile. "Thank you. You're the first person to tell me."
You watch as Kurapika walks away. "Hey, Kurapika? Where are your parents? I'm sure they're proud of you."
A look of sadness crosses his face. "That's a story for another day."
The year quickly passes and before you know it, it's almost March. The signs congratulating seniors at school reminds you of how close you are to graduation.
Kurapika waits for you at the front of the school. The anxious feeling in your stomach subsides as soon as you see him.
You've had a lot less anxiety since meeting Kurapika. He's been giving you tips on how to deal with the bullies at your school. They still pick fights with you, but you now have the courage to stand up for yourself.
"(Y/N)!" Kurapika shouts as he sees you. "Did you have a good day?"
"Yes. I'm one day closer to graduation." You walk beside Kurapika.
You feel another pair of eyes on you.
"(Y/N)! Wait up!" a young man shouts behind you.
You turn around to see who it is. You recognize your handsome classmate immediately.
He catches his breath. "You left this in class." He hands you a notebook. "Don't worry...I didn't read it."
You take your notebook from him. "Thank you very much." You bow in front of him.
He smiles at you. A hint of pink appears on his cheeks. "No problem. Have a nice evening."
You smile back at him. "You, too."
"Well...see you around." He waves before turning around to leave.
"See you." You wave back.
You turn around and continue to walk alongside Kurapika. You notice he's being extra quiet.
"Is he a friend of yours?" Kurapika finally asks you.
"No."
"A boyfriend?"
"Uh...no. I barely know him. I'm surprised he even knew my name."
"I see." Kurapika looks down. "Do you have a boyfriend?"
You give Kurapika a puzzled look. "Do you think someone like me has a boyfriend?"
"It's an honest question."
You continue to walk, looking straight ahead.
"Boys don't pay attention to me. Now that I think of it, I'm almost nineteen and I've never been asked out on a date," you say.
"I find that hard to believe."
You tilt your head to the side. "Huh?"
It's a beautiful day and the two of you have decided to walk most of the way back home. You stop dead in your tracks when you notice a familiar street.
"Is everything alright, (Y/N)?"
"Uh...this used to be my street."
Kurapika looks down the quiet narrow street. "Oh. Would you like to visit your mother? I'm sure she'd like to see you."
"No. She hasn't even called me. I'm sure she's glad I'm out of her life."
Kurapika gently nudges you. "Don't be ridiculous. You're her daughter. Besides, don't you want to invite her to your graduation?"
"I guess you're right," you say. Your face brightens. "Actually, I'm more excited for her to meet you."
The two of you continue to walk down the street until you arrive at your house. You take a deep breath before walking to the front door.
Tears stream down your mother's face as soon as she sees you.
"(Y/N)! My baby girl!" She wraps her arms around you. "You look well."
You hug her back. "Mom, I've missed you. Why haven't you called?"
She pulls away and shakes her head. "Every time I tried, your stepfather would take the phone away from me."
"Why do you allow him to control your life?"
She hangs her head. "Because he's good to me."
The three of you remain silent for a few minutes before you hear the back sliding door open. You feel your heart pound in your chest when you see your stepfather walk in.
"Oh...it's you. What the hell do you want? Money?"
"No. I'm here to invite mom to my graduation." You scowl, remembering the last interaction you had with him.
"Hmph. Who's that?" he asks, motioning toward Kurapika.
Your heart flutters when you look back at Kurapika. You return your attention to your mother. "Mom? Are you going to invite us in? There's someone special I want you to meet."
You're about to take your shoes off when your stepfather stops you.
"No. You and your girlfriend aren't invited in. Get the hell out of here."
You clench your jaw while making a fist. You raise your right arm. Kurapika gently pushes it back down.
"(Y/N), he's not worth it. Let's go."
You keep your eyes focused on your stepfather. "He's not a girl! Kurapika is more of a man than you'll ever be!"
The two of you leave the house without looking back. You feel hot tears threatening to fall down your cheeks. Kurapika grabs your shoulders.
"Hey, don't hold back your tears for my sake. Go ahead and cry."
You bury your face into Kurapika's chest and allow yourself to cry. You soak Kurapika's suit jacket. He wraps his arms around you, stroking your back with his right hand. He patiently waits for you to let out your emotions.
"You know what? I probably would've killed myself if I never met you," you say, sobbing.
Kurapika pulls away from you. "No, you wouldn't have."
You wipe your tears away with the back of your hand. "How do you know?"
"You don't give up easily. That night you told me you were going to quit school, I knew you didn't mean it. Sure...that would've been the easy way out. But you...you kept going. You suppressed your anxiety and fought through it. Simply put...you're a fighter."
Instead of responding, you look down at your feet. Kurapika smiles.
"The people who keep quiet are the ones who have the most to say. However, you don't say anything because you fear no one will understand you. Am I right?"
You look at Kurapika with widened eyes. "Y...yes."
Kurapika nods. "You know you can tell me anything. Do not fear judgment. You won't receive any from me."
"Thank you, Kurapika."
You both continue to walk. You glance at Kurapika. The sun shines through his blonde hair.
"Speaking of quiet people...you don't say much either. You never told me about your parents."
"I guess we've known each other long enough for you to know."
Kurapika tells you his story about losing his clan.
"I'm so sorry, Kurapika. I guess we all have problems. Some are worse than others. I admire you," you say.
Later that evening, you close your textbook and yawn. "Finally...all done. I think I'm going to bed early tonight."
"Yes, you had a long day." Kurapika places a cup of tea in front of you.
You blow into the mug before taking a sip. Kurapika spreads your blankets out on the couch. He stops midway.
"Is everything okay?" you ask him.
"You know...you've been living with us for almost a year now and we haven't bought you your own futon. How about you take my bed for the night? You deserve a good night's rest."
You set your mug down. "Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. Go right ahead."
After you wash up for the night, you settle into Kurapika's soft mattress. A moan escapes your lips as if all your problems just vanished.
Kurapika tiptoes into his room to grab his pajamas.
"Kurapika? I feel bad for taking your bed. It's big enough for the both of us. Why don't we share?"
Kurapika closes his eyes and shakes his head. "That would be inappropriate."
You scoot over, making room for him. "We've known each other for a long time. Besides, I don't feel like being alone after today."
He doesn't answer. Instead, he stares at the empty space in the bed.
"Please?" you ask him.
"Are you sure?
"Of course!"
Kurapika crawls into the bed after changing into his pajamas.
You turn to face him. The moonlight illuminates the room.
"Thank you again for sharing your story with me," you say.
Kurapika turns onto his side to face you. "Of course."
"You know...I've been thinking. You've done so much for me this past year. I want to pay you back."
Kurapika stares at you with grateful eyes. "That's not necessary."
You've never been this close up to Kurapika before. You notice all of his features. Especially his eyes. They turn a deep scarlet right in front of you.
"Kurapika...your eyes!"
"Shh...don't be afraid.
You instinctively place your hand on his cheek. He closes his eyes, enjoying your touch.
You feel heat rise to your cheeks.
Why do I feel this way around him?
He places his hand over yours. "Just let yourself go."
Is he reading my mind?
You move closer to Kurapika. You can smell his natural scent. He still has his eyes closed, waiting for your next move. You move your hand down his muscular arm. You take a deep breath before closing your eyes and pressing your lips against his.
You wait a few seconds before opening your eyes. Kurapika still has his eyes closed. You close yours again. You slightly part your lips. Seconds later, he swipes the top of your lower lip with his tongue. You lay still, waiting for him to make the next move.
To your surprise, Kurapika wraps his arm around your waist and pulls himself on top of you. His lips never leave yours. You need air, but you're afraid to move. You don't want this moment to end.
Kurapika pulls away, leaving you gasping for breath. You pull him back in, afraid he'll leave. He positions himself back on top of you. You feel his bangs tickle your forehead as he moves his face closer to yours. His lips meet yours again. You immediately part your lips, hoping Kurapika will give you more.
Your body shudders beneath him when you feel his tongue glide over yours. Kurapika moans against your mouth as he deepens the kiss. You kiss him back with an urgent need. You grab the back of his head as you match his movements.
Kurapika nibbles your lower lip. You tug at his pajama top. He takes your hint and pulls away to take it off. You admire his beautiful body.
He unbuttons the first two buttons of your pajama top.
You stop him from going any further. "No...stop."
He furrows his brow.
You turn away, face flushed. "I...I don't like the way I look."
"What are you talking about? Your body is incredibly beautiful."
You look back at Kurapika. "You think so?"
"Of course. But...I'm not going to force you to do anything you don't want to do."
"That's the thing...I want to."
"How about I slowly unbutton the rest?"
"O...okay."
Kurapika unbuttons your pajama top, leaving your chest covered. He kisses your lips. He opens the front of your top, resting his hand on one of your breasts. His touch radiates throughout your body.
Once you feel more comfortable, you push him away, pulling off your top.
He rests his weight on top of you, his chest hot against yours.
Instead of going back to your lips, Kurapika places his mouth against your neck, licking down to your collarbone. He looks at you with lustful eyes.
You nod, giving him permission to proceed. You close your eyes. You feel cold for a brief moment as Kurapika gets off of you. You hear him fumble around in his bedside drawer. You wait patiently as he rips open a condom wrapper.
Kurapika presses his mouth against your ear. "Stop me if you don't want to go any further."
A thrilling shiver runs down your spine as Kurapika pulls down your pajama pants. You open your eyes to watch him. Your eyes fall on his erection. Your eyes widen.
A look of worry crosses his face. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah...I just...I didn't expect it to be so big."
It's Kurapika's turn to blush. "Uh...well...shall we continue?"
You grip the sheets. "Uh-huh."
He tugs at the sides of your panties. He looks back at you before pulling them off.
"It's fine. Go ahead," you say.
Kurapika doesn't waste any time pulling them off. He stops to admire your body.
He spreads your legs. You feel warm liquid trickling out of you. Seconds later, he pushes the head of his penis inside of your entrance. You jolt back.
"Take it out...it hurts!"
Kurapika obeys. "I'm sorry. We can stop if you feel uncomfortable."
You shake your head. "No...no. Please...I just didn't expect it to hurt so much."
"How about this?"
Kurapika places his fingers over your entrance. He spreads your labia before inserting his index finger inside of you. He massages your walls. You rock your hips back and forth.
"How does this feel?" he asks you.
You throw your head back. "It...feels...really good."
Kurapika inserts his middle finger. "How about now?"
"Y...yes."
He massages you for a minute, making sure you're ready for him. He pulls his fingers out, leaving you wanting more.
Kurapika repositions himself on top of you. He slowly pushes himself back into you, stopping halfway.
Tears well up in your eyes from the tearing pain.
"You're too tense. Relax," says Kurapika.
You take a deep breath. Kurapika holds you until you adjust. He pulls back before going deeper. The pain subsides with each small thrust, and you find yourself pulling him in deeper until he is completely inside of you.
Kurapika keeps his thrusts gentle, slowly filling you with warmth. You can't imagine sharing this intimate moment with anyone else.
Kurapika is able to pick up the pace. You moan with each thrust. The mattress creaks as he plunges deeper into you. The pain you once felt has been replaced by a pleasure you never knew existed.
He finds a spot that throws you over the edge. You don't understand what your body is doing. Your legs begin to tremble involuntarily as the pleasure builds in your center and travels throughout your body. Your vision goes white. Your body convulses as you experience your first orgasm.
"Kura...pika!" you scream.
Kurapika feels your walls tighten around him. He moans through clenched teeth as he reaches his climax. You've never seen a more beautiful sight. His drop earring shines in the moonlight. He falls on top of you.
He breathes heavily against you. You hear his rapid heartbeat. The sound echoes through your soul.
"That...was...amazing," says Kurapika.
You comb his sweaty blonde hair with your fingers.
"Kurapika, I love you."
He lifts his head to face you. "I love you, too."
The next morning, Leorio gently knocks on Kurapika's door.
"Hey, there's breakfast on the table."
You slowly raise your head, blinking a few times. You blush and pull the covers up as soon as you see Leorio standing at the door. He covers his eyes and leaves the room.
You look at Kurapika, who is still sleeping soundly. A smile spreads across your face as you remember the details of last night. You kiss him on the cheek before crawling out of bed. Kurapika stops you.
"Don't get up yet. Leorio can wait. I want to hold you a little longer."
You don't object. You take your place back next to Kurapika, allowing him to hold you against him. A few minutes later, your bladder screams at you. You excuse yourself to use the bathroom.
By the time you return, Kurapika is already sitting in bed, pulling on a shirt.
You and Kurapika walk hand in hand to the table where Leorio is eating breakfast. He eyes the two of you.
"So...how was your night?" he asks Kurapika.
Kurapika pours you a cup of coffee. "I don't think there's a word in the dictionary that defines how wonderful my night was."
"Damn. That good, huh?"
You and Kurapika smile at each other.
Later in March, you graduate high school. Kurapika and Leorio throw you a small party.
After another blissful night with Kurapika, you're surprised to find the bed empty when you wake up. You throw the covers off and run to find him.
You see Leorio drinking a cup of coffee at the kitchen counter.
"Where's Kurapika? Have you seen him?"
"He left as I was coming back from work. He got an urgent call about some intel on a pair of scarlet eyes so he left. He told me to tell you not to worry," says Leorio.
You feel yourself about to panic. "No...you have to tell me where he went. I can't let anything happen to him."
Leorio senses your apprehension. He grabs your shoulders. "Listen...Kurapika is strong. He's been in dangerous situations in the past. There's no need for you to worry."
"No. Leorio, you need to tell me where he is. I know you know!" You punch him in the chest.
You feel your lungs deflate as you struggle to breathe.
Even though he's still just a medical student, Leorio gets into physician mode and assesses you.
"Hey...pull yourself together. I'll take you to him if you calm down."
You concentrate on your breathing. Once you have calmed down a little bit, you respond. "Okay. But I don't need you to take me. I can find him on my own."
"There's no way in hell I'm going to let you go alone."
Knowing you aren't going to win this fight, you agree.
You rush to get ready and run out the door.
You jump into the passenger seat in Leorio's car. He starts the engine. You watch the dark clouds as they threaten you with rain. He drives as fast as he can to Kurapika's location.
He slows down while he finds a place to park his car. "I don't like the look of this place."
You hop out and take in your surroundings. Abandoned buildings line either side of the littered street. You run to a group of people standing next to one of the buildings. You ignore the syringes in their hands.
"Have you seen a blonde man, about five seven, most likely wearing a suit?"
They give you a puzzled look and go back to their activities.
"Dammit!" You kick a door to one of the buildings.
You hear the faint sound of someone calling your name.
"Kurapika?" you call back.
You run inside the building, almost falling through the hole in the middle. Leorio catches you.
(Y/N), watch your step! You're going to get hurt."
You hear your name again.
"Shut up, Leorio! I hear him."
You carefully follow the sound, stepping on broken glass and rotten pieces of wood. You ignore the squeaking sound of rats scurrying about.
You find an empty room. A shadowy figure is lying on the floor. You recognize him immediately.
"Kurapika!" You run, kneeling next to him.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing here?" Kurapika asks you with a hoarse voice.
You stare at the pale Kurta. A pool of blood surrounds him, filling your nose with the smell of copper. He has his hand over his abdomen.
"Don't talk, Kurapika. You're hurt." You grab his hand, placing his cold fingers against your lips.
"My...stomach...will you check it?" He winces.
You gently place his hand back down. You unbutton his suit jacket and untuck his blood-stained white shirt. Your heart sinks to your stomach when you see Kurapika's small intestine. You swallow hard, showing Leorio.
Leorio nods and pulls out supplies from his briefcase.
"It's...fine," you lie to Kurapika.
Kurapika closes his eyes.
"No! Keep your eyes open. Please," you say.
Kurapika slowly opens his eyes. "You're right...I can't see your pretty face with my eyes closed. I'm just...very tired."
You pull out your phone to call an ambulance. You curse at them when they tell you they don't come to that part of town.
Leorio wraps Kurapika's abdomen. He throws you his car keys.
"(Y/N), get the car started. We gotta hurry."
"Right!"
You run back to Leorio's car. You start the engine and open the back door for Kurapika.
Minutes later, you see Leorio running out of the building with Kurapika in his arms. He carefully lays him in the back of the car before racing to the nearest hospital.
You sit down in the back to look after Kurapika. You reach down to kiss his lips, tasting his blood.
"(Y/N), I love you."
You pull your eyebrows close together as hot tears well up in your eyes.
"No, Kurapika. You're not going to tell me goodbye. You're not going anywhere...do you hear me?"
"But...I can see the lights when I close my eyes."
"Then we'll just have to make sure you don't close your eyes." You reach into your bag and pull out a notebook. "Kurapika, do you remember when that boy gave me back my notebook? Well, I was glad he didn't read it because it was actually my diary. I wrote a lot about you in it."
Kurapika looks at you with half-lidded eyes. "I'd love to hear what you wrote about me."
You flip through the pages to find the entry you wrote the day after meeting Kurapika. You clear your throat.
Yesterday my parents kicked me out of the house without warning. In school, they make us write about our life plans and penalize us for not turning them in on time. I always had trouble with that. How can they expect us to know who we want to be for the rest of our lives when we just started living?
I sat on a bench and watched as people went about their day. Some would smile at me, but most would just pass by, not knowing that the young girl they just passed is thinking about ending her own life.
That night, I met my first two friends. At least, I think they're my friends. They allowed me into their home, rent free, with the condition that I continue to go to school.
There's something about Kurapika. Something sparked inside of me the moment he shook my hand. I can't describe it, but...I want to get to know him better. All I know is that he's a hunter. He has these eyes that I'm afraid to look into for the fear that I'll drown if I look too deep. Then again, maybe I want to drown in those eyes.
Anyway, I'm feeling a lot better today. The thought of suicide crossed my mind once more, but then I thought, what if Heaven doesn't accept me for leaving behind the angel that was sent for me? The angel that goes by the name, Kurapika.
You close your notebook and watch as a tear slides down the corner of Kurapika's eye.
"That sounded like...music. Thank you for staying alive for me."
You feel a thousand knots in your stomach as you wait for the surgeon to give you an update on Kurapika's condition. Leorio stares blankly at nothing.
Minutes later, the surgeon walks into the waiting room. You and Leorio jolt up and wait for the surgeon to speak.
"Kurapika's family?" the surgeon asks you and Leorio.
"Yes!" you shout. "How is he?"
The surgeon shakes his head. You immediately fall to your knees.
Leorio swallows hard. "Did he make it?'
"He made it...barely. He's in stable condition. You can see him in the ICU."
You gasp for air as Leorio helps you back on your feet. The two of you take the elevator to see Kurapika.
As soon as you walk into Kurapika's room, you feel overwhelmed by the amount of wires and tubes that are connected to him. Leorio eases you, explaining the purpose of each one.
"Kurapika?" you ask as you walk closer to the bed.
Leorio places his hand on your shoulder. "He's on some heavy pain medicine. He might be out for a while."
"Well...I'm not leaving until he wakes up."
That night, the nurse brings you a pillow and a blanket.
"I have an extra tray if you'd like," she offers you.
You shake your head. "No, thank you. I'm not hungry."
"I can tell you're worried about him. Rest assured...he's doing better than we expected."
You turn your head and smile in Kurapika's direction. "He's strong."
"What's your relation with him?"
You stare at the floor as you think of an answer. "He's my boyfriend. But...that's just a title. He means more to me than that. I don't know how to explain it."
The nurse smiles at you. "Those are just titles. What matters is what you feel in your heart."
Kurapika moves his head in your direction. "(Y/N)? Is that you?"
Tears stream down your cheeks as you feel a sense of relief. "Yes, baby. How are you feeling?"
"Better now," Kurapika answers you. He winces.
You grab his hand. "Are you in pain?"
Kurapika shakes his head. "No. I just have something to tell you."
You tighten your grip on his hand. "Anything."
"(Y/N), you're more than my girlfriend. I'd like to give you a different title. How does Mrs. Kurta sound?"
You gasp. "You heard me?"
Kurapika nods. "What do you say? I mean...I already know you will be by my side in sickness...I promise to do the same. In my dictionary, the definition for wife is, (Y/N)."
"Kurapika." You wipe away your tears with your sleeve. "I'd be honored."
The color reappears on Kurapika's face. "Thank you, my angel."
You remember the journal entry you read to Kurapika. "I'm your angel?"
Kurapika attempts to move closer to you. "Yes. I never told you, but you saved me as well. I filled my life with work to avoid the emptiness I felt when I was alone. I made wonderful friends who helped shoulder the burden; however, nothing filled me with more happiness than you." He reaches out to touch your cheek. "Those lights I saw kept threatening to take me away, but I fought hard against them. I wasn't ready to leave you. I'm alive because of you, (Y/N)."
The nurse cries as she leaves the room. "That's the sweetest thing I've ever witnessed."
You press your lips against Kurapika's.
"I love you so much," you say.
Six months later
You and Kurapika run down the aisle. The sounds of clapping and laughter fills the air. Your wedding dress twirls as Kurapika spins you. You stop to stare at your new husband. You silently thank your parents for kicking you out that day. If it had not been for them, you would have never met the man who makes your life worth living.
He presses his lips against your ear. "I couldn't have conjured a better person to spend my life with."
