I jolt up in bed at around two. I check on the baby. She's sound asleep. I check on Kurapika. He's also sound asleep. His breaths are slow and even. The moonlight shines through the window, providing me with enough light to see his face. His lips are slightly parted. I wonder what he's dreaming about. And what woke me up so suddenly? Could it be that now, since we've settled back into married life, I can't help but wonder if I'm still sleeping with the enemy?
No...we've moved past that. Kurapika learned from his mistake. A tiny smile forms on his face. What is he dreaming about? I'll never know. I'll never know what really goes on in his mind. Am I going crazy? Why do I feel the sudden urge to strangle him? He's already paid for his sin.
Or...has he?
Six months pass by and I wake up at two every night with the same feeling. I ask myself the question Leorio onced asked me. Would you still have forgiven Kurapika if he never got into that accident?"
Now that Kurapika has fully recovered, I don't know. Maybe I only felt sorry for him. Or maybe I felt guilty for saying those terrible words to him. The reality is, he had an affair. The wounds he left in my heart didn't get the chance to heal.
What's that saying? Once a cheater, always a cheater? I wonder if that's true. I know my heart can't go through that again. He has obviously resigned from his job with the Nostrade organization. However, that doesn't mean my mind is at ease.
Kurapika and I have gone to marriage counseling, but after three sessions, he said it was a waste of time.
One thing is certain: he's a great father. That little girl is his world, and I'd hate to take her away from him.
Don't get me wrong, I do love him. I guess I'm just...scared. Scared he'll hurt me again.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing all alone in the dark?" Kurapika rests his hand on my shoulder.
I spin around in the armchair that sits in the corner of our bedroom. "Oh...hey, darling. I'm just a little tired. Nothing to worry about."
He reaches down and gives me a kiss. "Dinner is ready. Will you join us?"
"Of course. Just give me a second."
I watch as Kurapika leaves the room. I sit back and sigh. I decide it's best to just love him.
I walk to the dining room table. Kurapika already has Mirai in her highchair. He's feeding her pureed vegetables, and it's obvious she disapproves.
"You're trying to feed her peas again?" I sit down across from them. "You know she hates them."
Kurapika lets out a laugh. "I know, but they're good for her."
I smile as I grab my bowl of rice. I pick up a piece of katsu with my chopsticks and dip it in sauce before putting it in my mouth. "Mmm...this is good. Thank you, Kurapika."
"Of course. You shouldn't have to cook every night. I want to help you as much as I can."
Mirai picks up her spoon and throws it at Kurapika.
I laugh as peas splatter all over his face. "She has good aim."
He grabs a napkin to clean his face. "She sure does." He laughs. "I guess she's feeling better."
I furrow my brow. "Feeling better? What do you mean?"
Kurapika takes Mirai out of her highchair and sits her on his lap. "She sounded like she was coming down with a cold. I hope you don't mind, but I asked Leorio to stop by after work to assess her."
I bury my face into my hands. "Of course not. I just feel bad for not noticing she was sick."
He bounces her on his knee. "Don't be so hard on yourself. You've done a lot for this family."
After dinner, I take an extra long shower. I sit down in the tub and pull my knees against my chest. I allow my tears to pour from my eyes and down the drain. Why are my emotions taking over my life? I feel terrible for not even noticing my baby was sick.
The doorbell rings as I get out of the bathroom. I come out wearing the slip I usually wear to bed. Kurapika answers the door, allowing Leorio to come in.
"Where's my favorite little patient?" Leorio takes Mirai from Kurapika's arms.
Kurapika's eyes widen as I greet Leorio with a hug. He grabs my arm, walking me to our bedroom.
"Leorio, go ahead and assess Mirai. We'll be right back."
Leorio goes about his business as Kurapika and I walk to our bedroom. He slams the door behind us.
"What's the matter, Kurapika?"
He stares at me with a serious expression on his face. "I told you Leorio was coming over. Why did you come out wearing that?"
I look down at my slip. "Leorio is always here. I didn't know I had to dress up for him."
"No, you don't. However, you should know better than to wear something that is see-through. It's inappropriate."
I roll my eyes. "Oh, please. He didn't even notice."
"That's not the point." He closes his eyes in frustration. "Just...put on a robe or something."
Kurapika leaves me alone in the bedroom. I feel the corners of my mouth move upward as I think about how I just made him jealous. It feels...good.
I pull on a robe before meeting them in the living room. I watch as Leorio listens to Mirai's lungs with his stethoscope. He is dressed in scrubs and is wearing a lab coat. I bite my lip as I take a seat next to him.
"How does she sound?" I ask Leorio.
He wraps his stethoscope behind his neck. "A little congested, but nothing serious."
Kurapika sighs in relief. "Thank you, Leorio. I appreciate you stopping by on such short notice."
"Anytime," Leorio says.
Kurapika takes Mirai from Leorio and walks to her nursery.
I move closer to Leorio. The smell of his cologne is faint from working all day. I rest my head on his shoulder. "How was work?"
He jolts up when he notices how close I am to him. "Uh...busy. As always."
I smile at him, my poor attempt at flirting. "Do you have a girlfriend yet? I bet all the nurses swoon over you."
Sweat drops form on his forehead. "Uh...since when do you care about my love life?"
I pull down one of the sleeves to my robe to expose my shoulder. "You're my friend. Your happiness is important to me."
He scratches the back of his head. "Well...there is a pharmacist I'm thinking about asking out."
I pout. "Is she pretty?"
"She's hot as hell." He shakes his head. "Wait a minute...this is a conversation I usually have with Kurapika...not his wife."
I fall back into the couch cushion. "I'm sorry...I just like to listen to other people's love stories. It reminds me of when Kurapika and I first fell in love."
He raises an eyebrow. "Is everything okay between you two?"
I shake my head.
He gives me a pity smile. "Parenting takes a toll on marriage."
No, you idiot. My husband had an affair.
"Yeah, you're probably right," I say.
He raises his hand. "I know what the two of you need!"
I tilt my head to the side. "Yeah?"
He pulls a few tickets out of his pocket. "The hospital is hosting a charity auction at The Imperial Hotel. I think you two should go and book a room for the weekend. You know...to spice things up a bit."
I raise an eyebrow. "Oh, yeah? And how are we supposed to spice things up with an infant?"
He winks at me. "That's easy. Alluka is always begging to babysit. Let her watch Mirai."
I turn my face, looking at nothing. "Hmm...that's not a bad idea. Thank you, Leorio."
Later that night, I tell Kurapika about Leorio's idea while we get ready for bed. His face brightens.
"That sounds like fun! I have to admit, I miss our alone time."
He sits on the bed next to me. He turns his head so he is face to face with me. I take a deep breath, steadying myself with my arms. It's been months since we shared a real kiss. My heart rate increases as his lips brush against mine. He closes his eyes, waiting for me to part my lips. I'm frozen in place. Visions of him and Neon in bed together flow through my mind. How am I supposed to have a romantic night with him if I can't even kiss him back?
A look of disappointment crosses his face as he pulls away from me.
"I...I'm sorry, Kurapika."
He raises a hand. "No need to apologize. I promise...I'm going to make you fall in love with me again. No matter what it takes."
"But...I'm already in love with you."
He looks away. "No, (Y/N). You might love me, but I can tell you're not in love with me. There's a difference."
Like clockwork, I jolt up in bed at two in the morning. I watch as Kurapika sleeps. I reach behind me to grab my pillow. I place it above his head, debating whether or not to suffocate him. He turns onto his other side, tucking his arm under his pillow. I suck in a breath of air, placing the pillow back in its original spot. I lay back down and cry myself to sleep.
The night of the auction finally comes and I'm actually excited for a little time away. I glide some lipstick across my lips. I can't remember the last time I got dressed up.
"Are you ready, my love?" Kurapika asks me as he walks into our room.
I turn around and gasp. He's dressed up in his suit, looking as handsome as the first day we met. My heart skips a beat as the beautiful memories flood my brain.
"Don't be afraid...take my hand," The blonde man said as he reached for my hand.
"No." I gripped the branch that kept me from falling with my life. "I'll fall if I let go."
"I promise. I won't let you fall," he said.
I looked up at the stranger. His eyes were full of confidence. Hesitant, I lifted my right arm. He immediately grabbed it and pulled me back to safety.
I fell on top of him, breathing heavily. I've never been so scared in my life. If this stranger didn't come when he did, I surely would have fallen to my death.
I crawled off of him, scared to look at my surroundings. I felt his hand on my shoulder.
"Hello. My name is Kurapika. May I ask yours?"
"Uh...it's (Y/N)."
He helped me on my feet and we began to walk through the wooded area.
"Thank you for saving my life," I said.
"No need to thank me. I almost fell off that same cliff when I was a child."
"You did?"
"Yes," he said. "My best friend saved me."
I stopped dead in my tracks. "Wait. Did you grow up here?"
He nodded.
"Then...that means...you're a Kurta?"
"The last one."
"That's impossible," I said.
He stood in front of me, changing the color of his eyes to scarlet. I gasped.
"May I ask what you're doing in the Lukso Province?" he said.
"I recently heard the story about what happened to the Kurta Clan and I wanted to do my own research."
He extended his arm to me. "Well...look no further. I'll answer any questions you have."
"(Y/N)? Are you ready?" Kurapika interrupts my thoughts.
"Uh...yeah. Let's go."
Kurapika and I check into our room. It's a magnificent suite complete with a balcony and hot tub. Music plays through the speakers. I spin around, facing Kurapika when I recognize the lyrics to Kimi Ni Muchuu.
"That's our song!" I run into his arms.
He holds me, burying his face in between my neck and shoulder. "It is. I'm hoping this weekend will be a new start for us. Please...open your heart to me."
I back up so he can face me. He stares at me with misty eyes. I reach up and press my lips against his. This time, I part my lips, inviting him in. He grabs the back of head, exploring my mouth as if it's his first time.
He pulls away, leaving me starved for air.
"Kami...you have the best lips," he says.
He pulls me in for another kiss, unzipping the back of my dress. Butterflies flutter inside of my stomach when I feel his lips move from my mouth, across my jaw, down my neck, down my shoulder...down...ahhh...down to my breasts. He tugs my dress, allowing it to fall to my ankles. I step out of it. He reaches behind me to unclasp my bra. It falls to the floor, next to my dress. He takes one of my nipples into his mouth, sucking it gently. He lets out a soft laugh as he pulls away.
I feel a tingling sensation in my breasts as Kurapika activates my let-down reflex, causing breast milk to leak from my nipples. I reach up and grab them, attempting to stop the milk from flowing.
I feel myself blush. "I...I'm so sorry."
"No need to apologize. You're providing nourishment for my child. There's nothing sexier than that."
He picks me up and lays me down on the bed. He pulls down my panties, pausing to study me with his eyes.
He undresses himself and climbs on top of me. "I missed you so much. I'll never stop thanking you for giving me a second chance."
He nibbles on my earlobe before leaving a trail of kisses down my neck. He runs his fingers down my torso, burning my skin with his touch. I arch my back, letting him know I'm ready for him. He continues to go down until...
"Ahhh...." I moan as he separates me with his fingers.
He slides a finger inside of me. I grip the comforter beneath me as he presses deeper.
He pulls his finger out, licking it clean. He grabs his erection, positioning it in front of my waiting entrance. I spread my legs wider as he slowly pushes himself all the way inside of me. He pulls back until he's almost out of me. He pushes back inside, repeating his movements over and over again.
He pauses once he's out of me again. "Damn...you feel so good. I'm not going to last." He thrusts harder, hitting my sweet spot.
I feel his body start to stiffen as he pushes himself deeper inside of me. He moans in my ear as he reaches his climax.
He collapses on top of me, breathing heavily. I run my fingers up and down his back as he recovers.
"I'm sorry, (Y/N). But don't worry...I'm still going to send you to the stars."
I lift my head up and watch as he pulls out of me. He crawls down to the foot of the bed, settling himself between my legs. His lips meet my skin, and he separates me with his tongue. The sensation travels throughout my entire body. I grab his hair, pushing his face against me. He licks up and down my right side. He moves to my left. He pauses, and....ahhh...he licks up and down the center, flicking my clit with his tongue. I release his hair and place my arms above my head. He continues with his movements...licking and sucking...until stars appear all around me.
I moan loudly, not caring who can hear me. I float in his galaxy, not ever wanting to come down.
He slows his pace, softly licking me clean until my convulsions subside.
Kurapika crawls on the bed beside me. He waits for me to recover before kissing me.
"I love you, (Y/N)."
I turn to face him. "And I love you, Kurapika."
"Why don't we skip our plans with Leorio tonight and just stay in?"
I place my hand on his chest. "I like that idea."
For the first time in almost a year, I sleep through the entire night.
The next evening, Kurapika and I meet Leorio at the bar. He notices the smiles plastered on our faces.
"I take it you two had a good night?"
"The best. I've never felt this happy before," Kurapika says.
I look around the hotel's bar. "This place is exquisite. Thank you for inviting us, Leorio." I take off my cardigan, exposing my strapless dress.
Both Kurapika and Leorio stare at me with widened eyes.
Kurapika kisses me on the cheek. He places his lips next to my ear. "You look stunning. I'm the luckiest man in the world."
I can't help but smile.
We wait for our drinks at the bar when we hear a familiar voice.
"Kurapika!"
I turn around to see who knows my husband. My heart instantly fills with rage as I watch Neon hug Kurapika from the back.
Leorio jumps from his stool and runs to my side. "Neon, get the hell out of here," he says, steadying me.
The wounds in my heart that are desperately trying to heal open up all at once, spilling blood into my chest cavity. I don't care how many guards surround her...I might just kill this bitch right now.
"Leorio, let me go!"
Neon spins around to face me. "Oh, hello, (Y/N). I'm sorry...I didn't know you and Kurapika were still together."
Kurapika's eyes widen and his hands start to tremble. "Ne...Neon? What are you doing here?"
She extends her hand and rubs Kurapika's arm. She's touching my husband! "I'm here for the auction, silly."
I want to rip the smile off her disgusting face.
"Uh...you should go," Kurapika says.
She shrugs her shoulders. "Okay. But...let's meet up later." She winks at Kurapika.
Leorio releases me as soon as Neon is out of sight. I pull Kurapika's arm. "Let's go."
I scowl at our tall friend. "Sorry, Leorio. We'll have to miss the auction."
Leorio hangs his head. "I'm sorry...I didn't know she'd be here," he says.
I rush out of the lobby, pushing Kurapika all the way to the elevator.
I don't look at him as we step onto our floor. We walk in silence back to our room.
Kurapika opens the door to our suite. "(Y/N), what's the matter?"
The door slams behind us. I pace the room, trying to breathe. Did he really just ask me that question?
Desperate for air, I walk outside to the balcony. He follows me. He puts his hand on my shoulder in an attempt to comfort me.
"Don't touch me!" I pull away.
"(Y/N), please. Take my hands...you're having a panic attack."
I grip my chest. Why did Kurapika have to do this to me? I'll never be able to erase those terrible memories of him and Neon from my head. It feels like I'm the one wearing a Nen dagger. Every time I breathe, the tiny knife pushes itself deeper into my heart.
My tears burn my cheeks as they fall. "Do you love her?" I ask him, afraid to see his expression.
I watch his feet as he jumps back. "Not a chance in hell."
"I saw the way you looked at her. It's best if we just get this out of the way."
He forces me to look at him. He holds my face, wiping away my tears with his thumbs. "I love you, (Y/N). But...if you don't trust me...then...what are we doing?"
What are we doing? I want Kurapika back. The Kurapika I knew before he had an affair.
I turn my head to look away from him. I bite my lip, trying to hold back the strong urge to cry.
"(Y/N)?" He grabs my waist.
"Kurapika...I...think we should..." I choke on my words.
He shakes me. "Should what?"
I manage to make eye contact with him. His eyes are filled with sadness and worry. I almost feel sorry for him again.
"Dammit, (Y/N)! Answer me!"
"I think we should separate," I whisper.
He turns around and walks back inside. I hear him as he punches a wall. I hold the railing behind me for support as I slide down to the concrete floor. I hear the door to our hotel room slam.
Love is hard. When the other person says, I love you, you assume they mean it. But...how can we tell? The answer is obvious. Their love shows through their actions. How can someone claim to be in love with you all while sharing intimate moments with someone else? I don't care what people say. There's no such thing as sex without love. Sure, it might mean nothing in the beginning, but eventually, love will surface from the depths of your heart. I mean, hell, Neon said she fell in love with Kurapika. How can he honestly tell me he didn't develop feelings for her?
He told me those memories are a blur to him. They certainly aren't for me. They play over and over again in my head as if they happened yesterday.
I close my eyes. I'm so emotionally exhausted, I don't care that I'm lying down on a cold concrete floor.
I slowly open my eyes. I sit up. A sharp pain travels down my back. How long have I been sleeping out here?
I walk inside the room. I check the bed to see if Kurapika came back. It's empty. I check my phone to see if he tried to call. Nothing.
It's a little after eleven, but I decide to go for a walk despite the time.
I walk downstairs to find the pool. The area is beautifully decorated with palm trees and flowers. The pool even has lights inside that change colors.
I thought for sure I'd be the only out here, but I can hear the sound of splashing. I find a chair away from the other guests in order to give them privacy. I don't intend on swimming. I just need a change in scenery.
The color of the lights in the pool change to a deep blue, making the water appear invisible. I glance at the couple in the water. How odd...they're swimming in their clothes. The male is wearing a suit and the female...
I jump out of my seat. The female has blue hair! I duck down, slowly running behind the plants in order to get a closer view. I hide behind one of the bushes.
That laugh...it belongs to Neon. And the man wearing a suit...he's blonde. I pull the leaves from the bush apart. It's my husband.
The next day, Kurapika and I pick up Mirai from Alluka. We ride back home in silence. Once we settle in, he approaches me.
"(Y/N)? We should discuss this separation. We have Mirai to consider."
"What's there to consider? She's staying with me," I say, matter-of-factly.
He looks away, squeezing his eyes shut. "That's not fair. You can punish me all you want, but please, don't bring our daughter into this." He looks back at me with a serious expression. "I'll fight for her. And...I'll win."
I let out a laugh. "Your threats don't scare me, Kurapika." I shove him against the wall. "Just pack up your shit and leave."
Mirai lets out a loud cry from all the negative energy around her. I pick her up and take her to her nursery.
I sing her a lullaby as I rock her. I see Kurapika's shadow appear.
"I'm not going anywhere. Not without my daughter," he says.
I curse myself for putting his name on her birth certificate. "Fine. Stay. Just pretend I don't exist."
"Fair enough. I'll move into the spare bedroom."
You better keep your door locked.
A week later, I see Kurapika dressed up in his suit, drinking coffee. I give him the side-eye as I reach into the cabinet for my mug.
He clears his throat. "I'll be out for most of the day. I hope you don't mind watching Mirai by yourself."
I pour myself a cup of coffee. "She's my daughter...why would I mind?" I mix cream and sugar into my coffee. "Not that I care, but where are you headed?"
He sighs. "I'm getting my job back."
I almost spit out my coffee.
Are you fuckin' kidding me?
He notices my reaction. "Look...I'm thinking about our daughter. It's a great paying job. My yearly salary is more than you'll ever make in your lifetime."
Did he just insult me? I should've pulled the plug when I had the chance.
"You do realize you're alive because of me, right?"
He pushes himself off the kitchen counter. "You're alive because of me as well. Do you remember who saved you from falling off that cliff?"
This arrogant bastard. Who does he think he is?
Later that evening, I'm playing with Mirai when I hear a knock at my door. I answer it, surprised to see Alluka.
She wraps her arms around me. "I know it's only been a week...but can I have Mirai for the night? I miss her so much."
I hold her hug for a few seconds before letting go. "Of course. Let me pack her bag."
Alluka picks Mirai up. She follows me to the nursery. "Where's Kurapika?"
I throw some diapers into a bag. "I don't know. Probably fucking his boss again."
She jumps back in surprise. "What?"
I hang my head, hiding my tears. "I'm sorry, Alluka. I'm just not having a good day."
I tell her everything Kurapika said to me this morning.
"I'm sure he just said that to get a reaction from you," Alluka says.
"Well, he got one. I'm getting those damn divorce papers tomorrow. I can't keep living like this."
"(Y/N)? I love you, and I respect your decision, but...you do know he's hurting, too, right?"
"Then...he should've thought about that before climbing into Neon's bed."
I wake up at two in the morning. I slip out of bed to get a glass of water. I stop at the door to Kurapika's bedroom. Curious, I slowly turn the doorknob. It's locked. Good. Now I won't be tempted to suffocate him.
I turn around to walk down the hall, but the sound of his voice stops me. Does he have someone in there with him?
I press my ear against the door. It sounds like he's talking on the phone. I can't hear exactly what he is saying. It sounds like gibberish. That is until...no.
"I love you," he says, clear as day.
I run back to my room, hyperventilating. I change into whatever clothes I can find in the dark before grabbing my keys and running out the door. I start the car, not knowing where I'm headed. I just drive.
I park my car in a familiar parking lot. The security guard allows me inside the building, and I run to the elevators. My heart rate increases as the elevator takes me up. I run until I find the apartment I'm looking for. Not caring if I wake up the neighbors, I bang on the door.
"Please be home...please be home."
Seconds later, I hear the door unlocking.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing here? It's three in the morning."
I breathe heavily. "I know...I just..."
"Come in."
I take off my shoes as soon as I enter the dark apartment.
"Leorio? I hope I'm not intruding. You're not on-call or anything, right?"
He wraps his arm around my waist. He flips on the light as we walk to the living room. "No. I'm actually off for the next few days. Besides...you can bother me whenever you want." He waits for me to sit on the couch before taking the seat next to me. "What's up?" He yawns.
I stare at him before answering. He looks different without his glasses. He's shirtless, wearing only pajama bottoms.
"It's Kurapika...he's in love with Neon."
He almost falls off the couch. "That's ridiculous. He loves you, (Y/N)."
I tell Leorio everything.
"Come here," he says, pulling me closer to him.
I rest my head on his hard chest as he rubs my back.
"I'm sorry my best friend is an asshole," he says.
I'm so sick of crying. When will this all end?
I must have fallen asleep because I wake up in a bed. I roll over. This is the softest mattress I've ever slept in. I can't tell if it's morning because the black-out shades are drawn closed. As much as I want to just fall back to sleep, my bladder tells me otherwise. I crawl out of the bed and walk to what I imagine is the bathroom.
When I finish, I wash my hands and swipe toothpaste across my teeth. I walk down the hall and follow the smell of fresh coffee. I find Leorio making breakfast in the kitchen. He smiles at me.
"Have you seen where I put my phone?" I say.
He motions towards the couch. "You don't need to worry about anything. I spoke with Alluka. Mirai is fine." He looks at me like he has more to say. "I...um...also spoke with Kurapika. I didn't know if you being here was a secret."
I sit on the stool across from Leorio. "What did you tell him?"
He passes me an omelet. "The truth."
"Oh. What did he say?"
"He's glad you're safe. He was worried when he didn't see you this morning."
"Hmph. I'm sure he's more worried about his mistress."
Leorio shakes his head. "(Y/N), I think you're wrong about him. Kurapika's a smart guy. He fucked up once. Do you actually believe he'd do it again?"
"You didn't see them in the pool, Leorio. And who else would he say, 'I love you,' to?"
"I know you're scared of getting hurt again, but it's worth having a conversation with him."
I push the omelet aside. "The only conversation I'm having with him is going to be inside a courtroom." I hop off the stool.
"You're just as stubborn as he is," Leorio says.
The room spins as I walk to the living room. I'm suddenly hot...no...cold. I'm shivering.
Leorio runs to me, placing the back of his hand against my forehead. "(Y/N), you're burning up." He picks me up and takes me to his room. "Hmm...reminds me of someone else we know."
He places me on his bed. "I'm fine, I promise. I have to get Mirai."
He swipes my forehead with a thermometer. "Nope. You're not going anywhere near her with this fever."
I attempt to get out of bed, but I fall back as soon as I get up. "But...I never get sick!"
"It's probably due to stress. Your body is trying to tell you to take it easy." He fluffs the pillow behind my head. "I'm going to update everyone. I'll be back with some medicine for you."
I close my eyes and listen to Leorio talk to Kurapika on the phone.
Too bad my head is throbbing...I can't hear a damn word.
Leorio comes back holding a couple of pills and a glass of water. I take the pills and swallow them.
"He's worried about you," Leorio says. "He's going to drop off a bag of your things. He also wants to check on you."
I pull the comforter over me. "Well...don't let him in when he does."
I've never felt so sick in my entire life. Luckily, Leorio has been by my side. I feel a little bad because he's spending his time off to take care of me.
As promised, Kurapika shows up the next day. I pretend to be asleep as I feel him sit on the bed beside me.
"Mirai is fine, although she misses her mama. I miss her mama, too. I hope you get better soon. You're in good hands though. Leorio has taken care of me numerous times." He sighs. "I'm sorry if I contributed to your sickness. I know I've been a...umm...for lack of a better word, jerk to you. The thing is...this is hard for me as well. I'm losing the love of my life."
I barely open my eyes to glance at him. He's looking straight ahead at nothing. He's changed so much. No words can take back what he's done to my heart.
I shut my eyes as soon as I see him turn his head to face me. He touches my cheek.
"Well, I better leave you alone to rest. Call me when you can."
He kisses my head before leaving the room.
My fever finally breaks the next day. While Leorio is at work, I disinfect his apartment and wash the bedsheets. I'd feel terrible if he caught whatever the hell I had.
When I'm finished, I fall on the couch to find something to watch on his huge television. The only movies I find are love stories, and I'm not in the mood to watch any of those.
I turn off the television and stare at the ceiling. I think about the last therapy session Kurapika and I had.
"Kurapika, are your expectations for intimacy being satisfied?" the therapist said.
He scowled at her. "That's none of your business."
I rested my hand on his knee. "Darling...that's why we're here."
He closed his eyes. "Right. I'm sorry."
The therapist crossed her legs. "Are you going to answer my question?"
He let out a deep breath. "Yes. (Y/N) meets my expectations for intimacy."
"Then what led to your infidelity?" she asked him.
He clenched his jaw. "I already answered that question. I had a moment of weakness."
The therapist bit the end of her pen. "Hmm...a moment of weakness? Do you feel loved by (Y/N)?"
"Of course I do."
She leaned forward, looking directly at Kurapika. "You mentioned before that you lost your family at a young age and had to raise yourself during your teenage years. That's quite the predicament for a young boy."
Kurapika raised his eyebrow. "And?"
"Well, in my opinion, you might benefit from individual counseling."
Kurapika straightened his posture. "(Y/N) and I are here to fix our marriage. Don't try to sell me more sessions with you."
"It just sounds like you might be trying to live out the moments that were stolen from you."
Her statement grabbed my attention. "What moments are you referring to?" I said.
She turned her attention to me. "Kurapika was forced into adulthood at an early age. He might feel like he missed out on a normal teenage life."
Kurapika turned to face me. "Don't listen to her, (Y/N). My parents did an excellent job raising me before they passed away."
The therapist turned her attention back to Kurapika. "Kurapika, since you brought up your parents, what do you remember about their parenting styles?"
Kurapika relaxed, as if memories about his parents brought him comfort. "Simply put, my mother raised me to be a free-spirit whereas my father taught me to obey the rules."
"Interesting," the therapist said.
"Do you have anything to say that will actually help us?" Kurapika said.
"I like to get to know my clients before offering any advice."
"This is our third session. Shouldn't you already know us well enough?"
The therapist wrote something in her notepad. Silence filled the room, making me feel uncomfortable.
"What's wrong?" I finally asked the therapist.
"It's just that couples in fulfilling relationships don't have affairs."
Kurapika stood up. "This is a waste of time." He took my hand. "Let's get out of here, (Y/N)."
Was she trying to tell us we weren't in a fulfilling relationship?
That's hard to believe. Looking back, everything felt perfect. We were the couple everyone envied. There was just one problem...his work. On his off days, he would spend his time searching for the scarlet eyes.
I knew about his goal before accepting his marriage proposal. I just didn't know how much he was willing to sacrifice. It's a little scary to think about where he'd be without me. I'm the one who forced him to eat and rest.
He talked a lot about revenge. I admit, it scared me in the beginning of our relationship, but he calmed down a lot after the wedding.
Hmm...revenge. Maybe that's what I need.
I jump at the sound of the door unlocking.
"(Y/N)? Still here?" Leorio takes off his white coat and sets down his briefcase.
I sit up. "Yes. Is that okay?"
He slumps down on the couch next to me. "I don't care if you moved in. I just don't think Kurapika would like that."
I let out a fake laugh.
He goes on to tell me all about his day. Every. Single. Detail. It's a little sad...he doesn't have anyone who will listen to him rant.
"Leorio, did you ever ask that pharmacist out?"
He looks away. "Yeah."
I move closer to him. "And?"
"She turned me down." His voice is low.
I pretend to feel sad for him. "She missed out."
He smiles at me. "Hey, thanks, (Y/N)." He gives me a hug. "Looks like you're feeling better. Did you tell Kurapika?"
Kurapika.
Leorio keeps talking, but all I can think about is getting revenge on Kurapika.
"Leorio!" I interrupt his babbling.
He jumps back. "Yeah?"
"How sad would you be if Kurapika was no longer around?"
His forehead crinkles. "(Y/N)? I think you're still sick." He places his hand on my forehead.
I push his arm away. "I'm fine. Sometimes I think about killing him. Is that normal?"
He studies my face. "(Y/N), you're heartbroken. I think it's perfectly normal to have those feelings." He looks away as his lower lip starts to tremble. "To answer your previous question...yes...I'd be sad if Kurapika wasn't around. You'd probably have to bury me with him."
I place my hand on his shoulder. "Leorio...I'm sorry. I just..."
He turns back to face me. "(Y/N), even if you were serious...you're not capable of taking someone's life. Besides, that would be the worst way to get revenge on him. He's not afraid of dying."
He's right. I'd probably be doing Kurapika a favor because he'd be reunited with his clan. Dammit.
A sly smile spreads across my face as I figure out a better way to get revenge on him.
"(Y/N)? Why are you looking at me like that?"
I stand up. "Follow me to the bedroom."
He obeys. I sit down on his bed, pulling down one of my straps.
Leorio runs his hands through his hair. "No, (Y/N). I know what you're thinking."
I try my best to pose sexy. I pat the empty space next to me.
He pushes himself off the doorframe and sits beside me.
"Kurapika's my best friend. Sure, he messed things up with you...but still. I can't betray him."
I pull myself closer to Leorio. The tears fall down my cheeks as I press my lips against his ear. "Please...I need to do this. If you won't, then I'll find someone who will."
He wraps his arm around my waist, pulling me until I'm straddling him. He brushes the hair away from my face.
"(Y/N), revenge isn't as sweet as people say it is."
I look away, not wanting him to see me cry. I get off of him and head to the front door.
He jumps up from the bed. "(Y/N)! Where are you going?"
I slip on my shoes. "I told you. I'm going to find someone who will give me what I want."
He slams his fist against the door, trapping me inside the apartment. "No, you're not!" His face turns beet red. "I'm not allowing you to hook up with some random stranger just to get back at Kurapika. There's a lot of creeps out there."
I let out a laugh. "You can't keep me trapped here forever. I already told you...my mind is made up. There's no changing it now." I grab my purse. "Besides, I have this." I open my purse, showing him its contents.
His eyes widen. "(Y/N)! What the hell are you doing with a gun?"
"Relax. Kurapika gave it to me for protection."
"Do you even know how to use it?"
"Of course. Kurapika taught me." I place my purse over my shoulder. "Please...get out of my way."
He sighs, hanging his head in defeat. "You're making this really hard for me."
I smile. "So...you're gonna do it?"
He closes the gap between us, placing his hand behind my head. He reaches down, pressing his lips hard against mine.
It takes me a couple of seconds to realize what's happening. He pulls away and stares into my eyes. He searches for approval. I slowly nod. He reaches back down, this time parting my lips with his tongue. His kiss is...different. Not bad, just nothing like Kurapika's. I don't know if it's because of the situation I'm putting him in, but his kiss feels like a warning. A warning I ignore.
He picks me up and takes me to his bedroom. His lips never leave mine.
He breaks our kiss as he lays me down on his bed. My body starts to tremble from both excitement and fear.
I feel his hands unbutton my blouse. He pulls it off, leaving me in my bra. He attempts to unclasp it, but I end up having to help him. He swallows hard before pulling the straps down. My breasts bounce as soon as he frees them. Thankfully, I successfully weaned Mirai meaning no more embarrassing leaks. He gasps, sweat drops forming on his forehead.
He hooks his thumbs inside the waist of my skirt. He looks at me before proceeding.
"It's okay," I whisper.
He pulls it down, along with my panties. My legs part. He stares at me, wiping drool from the corner of his mouth. I look away, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. Kurapika is the only one who has ever seen me like this.
I feel his hands caress my torso. "Kurapika's an idiot. You're a fuckin' goddess."
I glare at him. "Please...don't say his name. I don't want to ruin this moment."
"Right. I'm sorry. Uh...what do you want me to do?"
"Whatever you want."
He climbs out of bed to undress himself. This is starting to feel real. He opens his bedside table to take out a condom. I watch as he rips it open with his teeth. My eyes fall to his erection. It's different from Kurapika's.
Once he pulls on the condom, he positions himself on top of me. He supports his weight with his arms.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Please," I beg.
"If at any point you want me to stop, just tell me," he says.
He pushes into me, stopping halfway. "Okay...you've officially cheated on him. Should we stop?"
"Hell no. He did it for months before I found out. I want the full experience."
A look of relief washes over Leorio as he pulls himself out and back inside of me. He pauses to kiss my neck. He pulls back out...and in...and out...and...ahh. He finds my sweet spot. Excitement fills my veins as he picks up the pace.
I wrap my legs around Leorio, pushing him deeper inside of me. I close my eyes. I see my vows shred into pieces as he thrusts into me. Guilt should consume me, but...it doesn't.
His lips reach mine and I part my lips, allowing him to invade my mouth. He leaves my mouth to find my neck again. He pushes the delicate skin with his tongue, suckling every few seconds.
My legs unwrap from his waist. I spread them wide, allowing him to thrust hard into the most intimate part of me. The part of me that is reserved for my loving husband.
He wraps his arms around me and turns my body around so I'm on top. I smile. I'm in full control now. I lift my hips so he's almost out of me. I pause to watch his face. His jaw is clenched, waiting for me to give him what he wants.
I slam down on his length. He lets out a moan and I rock my hips back and forth on him. He reaches up and squeezes my breasts.
I moan...I scream...I call out a name that doesn't belong to my husband. It feels incredible. My body starts to tremble, and Leorio grabs my waist to stop me.
"Hey, let's finish together," he says.
My eyes widen. "Yes, I'd love that."
He lifts himself up and positions me back on my back. He looks me up and down.
"Is there...umm...something he does that...makes you...you know..."
I place my hand on his chest to interrupt him.
"I'm fucking you...not him. Do whatever it is you do that makes women go crazy."
"Your wish is my command."
He finds my clit and rests his thumb against it. Using a circular motion, he massages it while thrusting himself deep inside of me.
I feel myself shake as the pleasure builds just below my navel. This new sensation sends waves of ecstasy throughout my entire body.
He thrusts into me one more time before his body stiffens and falls on top of me.
We both just lay here, breathing heavily.
We don't say a word.
He finally pulls himself out of me. "You should go. Feel free to use my shower before you leave."
I watch as he puts his clothes back on. He can't hide the look of guilt that is evident on his face.
I'm a terrible person...I knew he didn't want to do this...however, I practically forced him to betray his best friend.
He closes the door, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I quietly open the front door to my house in case Mirai is asleep. Kurapika runs to me with open arms.
"(Y/N), you're back! Feeling better?"
I allow him to hug me. "Yes. How's Mirai?"
"Alluka still has her. She wants to give you an extra night of rest."
I slip off my shoes. "Oh, but I miss her."
"I promise...she'll be here first thing in the morning." He takes my bag for me. "Did Leorio take good care of you? He didn't make you feel uncomfortable...did he?"
A tinge of guilt forms in my stomach. "Uh...no. He took excellent care of me."
Kurapika kisses me on the lips.
I pull away. "Kurapika, what are you doing?"
"Giving my wife a kiss. What's wrong with that?"
I walk past him to my bedroom. "We're separated, remember?"
He follows me into the bedroom. "About that...I was hoping to rectify our situation."
I furrow my brow. Is he serious?
"But...Kurapika, you're working for Neon again."
He jumps back. "Who said that?"
"You did. Remember...in the kitchen? You said you were getting your job back."
He shakes his head. "No, (Y/N). I meant I was getting my job as a hunter back."
A hollow pit forms in my stomach. "Why...why didn't you tell me that?"
"You didn't ask. Hell, you didn't ask me anything. I figured you were still trying to avoid me."
"Well...what about that night at the hotel? I saw you in the pool with Neon."
He walks closer to me. "(Y/N), that night...I just wanted to be alone. She found me by the pool and pushed me in. I was trying to get away from her." He reaches out and caresses my cheek with his thumb. "You're my happiness. I'd never make the same mistake twice. Please...can we go back to being a family?"
"Wait a minute." I push his hand away from me. "Who were you talking to at two in the morning the other night? I couldn't understand what you were saying until you said, 'I love you' to someone."
He takes my hand. "I'll show you."
He walks me into the spare bedroom he's been sleeping in. He shows me his beautifully decorated display of scarlet eyes. Surrounding them are pictures of his clan.
"The reason you couldn't understand me was because I was speaking in my clan's language." He hands me a picture of his parents. "That's who I was saying, 'I love you' to."
Tears well up in my eyes. "Oh, Kurapika...I'm so sorry."
"Sorry for what? I wasn't being kind to you. It's no wonder you wanted to stay away from me. Just so you know...you can always come to me with questions. I'll always answer them honestly."
The pit in my stomach increases in size.
He presses his forehead against mine. "What do you say? Can we go back to being a married couple?"
I take a deep breath. "Yes."
I wake up at two in the morning. I look at Kurapika, and he smiles at me. The light from outside the window illuminates the room.
"Bad dream?" he says.
I wipe my forehead. "You could say that."
He sits up and kisses me. I kiss him back, not knowing what else to do.
He breaks our kiss to turn on the bedside lamp.
He pulls down the straps to my nightgown. "Allow me to turn that nightmare into a beautiful dream."
He presses his lips against my neck. I give in to the moment.
"(Y/N)!" he shouts, taking me out of my trance. "What happened to your neck?"
I cover the love bite Leorio left me with my hand. "Oh...it's nothing. You know I bruise easily."
He removes my hand from my neck to kiss it. "Does it hurt? I can make it feel better."
Kurapika kisses the very spot his best friend kissed me only hours ago.
We take turns undressing each other. I throw my head back as soon as I feel his lips on my breasts.
He presses himself inside of me. I moan into his ear.
His thrusts are deliberate, as if he's apologizing for his mistakes. I move my hips to match his movements, letting him know I'm also sorry.
He thrusts into me harder...harder...ouch...it hurts. Is he trying to punish me? I look up into his eyes. He's...crying. Does he know?
"Kurapika?" I whisper.
He looks into my eyes. Why are they filled with so much sadness?
I lift my hands above my head. He places his hands on top of mine, interlocking our fingers. He kisses me deeply...so deep...I can barely breathe. The pleasure builds below my navel, and a few thrusts later, I'm high. It's a feeling of pure euphoria, and I never want to come down from it.
He reaches his climax and falls on top of me.
He rolls off once he recovers.
"I love you, (Y/N). Did I ever thank you for saving my life? Did I ever thank you for taking such good care of me, even though I didn't deserve it? Did I ever thank you for giving me a precious daughter? If not...thank you. For everything."
I touch his cheek. "You're welcome."
"(Y/N)? You're the most amazing woman on this planet. I fell into the deadly trap of adultery. You forgave me, even though I broke my solemn vow. I want to ask...will you marry me?"
I laugh. "We're already married."
"I know. I mean...will you marry me again?"
I look deep into his eyes. A tear rolls down my face. It's the same Kurapika I fell in love with years ago.
I let out a gasp. "Yes," I say. "Let's get married again."
He rolls me on top of him, leaving kisses all over my face. The hollow pit that formed in my stomach is now filled with guilt. Did Kurapika feel like this when he came home and made love to me after being with Neon? He told the therapist he did; however, I'll never know his true answer.
He falls asleep before me. I think about our future, trying my hardest to forget the past.
We both made the same mistake, but...why does mine feel so much worse? Is it because mine involved his best friend? Will he forgive me? Will he forgive Leorio?
Either way, I have to tell him. I'll tell him tomorrow...first thing in the morning.
Except...I don't.
A month goes by and I don't hear from Leorio. I don't think Kurapika has spoken to him either. I don't want to ask, afraid he'll suspect something.
While Kurapika is at work, I decide to visit Leorio at the hospital. I take the elevator up to the pediatric unit, and ask the secretary if she knows where I might find him.
She doesn't have to look far. He's sitting in front of a computer, talking to a beautiful woman. Why do I feel jealous?
"Leorio?"
He slowly turns around when he hears my voice. The look on his face tells me I shouldn't be here. A knot forms in my stomach, and I start to back away from the counter.
"(Y/N)!" He stands up from his seat and walks toward me. His expression changes. "I'm about to take a break. Why don't you join me?"
"Uh...okay."
I follow him down one of the halls. I look into the patient rooms, noticing they're empty. We reach the last room.
"What are we doing here?"
"This is the on-call room. Great for privacy," Leorio says.
I follow him inside the room. It's small, about half the size of my bedroom. A bunk bed sits to the right. I walk a few steps until I reach the wall while he closes the door behind him. I turn around and lean against the wall, noticing he's locking the door.
He's staring at me. I can't read his expression. Is he still angry at me? Was he ever angry at me?
"Leorio, I..."
He closes the gap in between us with determination. He reaches down and presses his lips against mine. My eyes widen as he invades my mouth. I slowly close my eyes, giving into his kiss.
I forget my purpose for being here as he pulls down my panties and pulls my skirt up. My heart rate accelerates as I watch him tear open a condom wrapper.
He picks me up, positioning me so my entrance is directly above his manhood. I wrap my legs around his waist as I slide down his length.
The rush of having someone besides my husband inside of me takes over my body. He grabs my waist, pulling me up and back down on him.
I moan into his ear and he continues to lift me up and down, hitting my sweet spot with each thrust.
My legs start to shake as I get close to my climax. Thankfully, we're the only two people in this hall. Otherwise, people would hear my mixture of moans and screams.
Leorio lets out a few moans of his own as he climaxes seconds after me. We both stumble over to the bottom bunk, breathing heavily.
I lay back on the mattress. The beautiful pleasure I felt seconds ago fades away and turns into ugly guilt.
Leorio throws away the condom and adjusts himself back into his scrub pants before making eye contact with me.
He grabs my left hand, spinning my wedding band around my finger. "Does he know?"
"No," I say, voice hoarse.
"He's my best friend."
"I know. I'll tell him."
He releases my hand. "Just text me when you do so I'll be prepared when he comes over to kick my ass."
I smile. "I will."
One year later, I run to Leorio's apartment. He opens the door and allows me in.
I start to undress as soon as he closes the door.
"Hurry...we don't have much time. He should be home soon and he'll wonder where I'm at."
Leorio picks me up and kisses me on our way to his bedroom. He pulls off his shirt after he lays me on his bed. I get under the covers while I wait for him to finish undressing.
He kisses my neck as soon as he joins me under the covers. I grab his erection and place it in front of my entrance.
"Damn...straight to business, huh?" Leorio says.
He pushes himself inside of me, not giving me time to adjust. He changes his angle with each thrust. It's driving me crazy...left...right...left...right...then...
"Ahh...yes...right there," I say as he thrusts into the middle. "Don't stop."
I dig my nails into his shoulders. "I'm close."
He pulls back, stopping when he's almost all the way out of me. Disappointment crosses my face as I look at him.
"Not yet," he says. "Not until you hear what I gotta say."
I grind my hips against him, attempting to get him back inside of me. "What is it, Leorio?"
He presses his forehead against mine, taking a deep breath. "I'm falling for you, (Y/N)." He pushes himself in and out of me. "This thing we're doing... it needs to stop."
He's back inside of me. He buries his face in between my neck and shoulder. It sounds like he's crying.
I feel my own teardrops fall from the corners of my eyes. "Leorio, I'm falling for you, too."
His thrusts feel different. He's...making love to me. I arch my back as the passion builds in between us.
I can feel it. The sweet spot inside of me is about to explode. I'm so close, but...my body won't let me release.
I open my eyes. I gasp as soon as I see the familiar pair of scarlet eyes gazing down at me.
"Kurapika!" I scream.
Leorio stops to stare at me. "I'm sorry, (Y/N). You're thinking about him, aren't you?"
I can't speak.
"Leorio, have you been looking for your knife?" Kurapika says. "Because it appears you left it inside my back."
Sweat drops form on Leorio's forehead as he slowly pulls out of me. I've never seen him look so scared before.
He turns to face Kurapika and is greeted by a punch to his mouth. Blood splatters on my chest. Kurapika lifts his arm and slams his fist against Leorio's face again. More blood splatters on me. Leorio simply allows Kurapika to beat him up.
"Kurapika, that's enough!" I finally scream.
Kurapika stops punching Leorio when he hears my voice. He turns to face me. His expression breaks my heart. Leorio was right. Revenge isn't sweet. I've said it myself...you can't have sex without expecting love to creep into your heart. I knew this, and yet, I still continued to have an affair with Kurapika's best friend. It was only supposed to happen once as a way to get back at Kurapika. But then it turned into something exciting. And now...I'm breaking hearts.
"(Y/N), let's go home," Kurapika says.
I take a deep breath before getting out of my car. I notice Killua's car is parked in the driveway, meaning they brought Mirai back home. At least that will give me a little time before Kurapika confronts me.
Mirai runs to me as I take my shoes off. "Mama!"
I pick her up and rub my nose against hers. I can't believe she's almost two. She's a smart little girl. Her golden hair is up in two short pigtails. Alluka loves to dress her up like a little doll.
"Did you have fun with Aunt Alluka today?"
"Yes. We played castle."
"You did?" I say. "Where's dada?"
I set her back down on her feet. She points to the French doors that lead to the back porch.
"Outside. Dada's going to play dragon with me."
"That sounds fun!"
"I'm going to play dolls now," she says.
I watch as she walks back to her pile of toys that are stacked on the living room floor. Alluka is sitting in front of the toys. She gives me a half smile. She knows something is wrong.
Kurapika walks back into the house followed by Gon and Killua. He greets me with a kiss.
"Good evening, my love," he says. "I was just showing Gon and Killua the playhouse I'm building for Mirai."
He must be acting normal because our friends are here.
"Right. It's coming along well." I say, looking down at my feet. I can't bring myself to look into his eyes.
The front door opens behind me. I don't need to turn around to see who it is. Kurapika clenches his jaw. Gon and Killua's eyes widen. They must notice the fresh bruises on Leorio's face.
Mirai runs back to the entryway.
"Uncle Oreo!"
I finally turn around. He picks her up and tosses her in the air. She giggles.
"How's my little princess?" Leorio says, squeezing her like it's the last time he'll ever see her.
Mirai tilts her head and touches his cheek. "Did a werewolf get you?"
The room is silent. I can only hear the sound of Kurapika's rapid breathing.
"Put my daughter down and get out of my house," Kurapika says, trying his best to remain calm.
Leorio puts Mirai back down and lifts his hands up. "Look...I just want to apologize to you, Kurapika."
"Not now, Leorio," Kurapika says. "Not in front of my daughter."
Mirai runs back to her toys. Alluka picks her up and takes her to her room to play.
"What's going on?" Gon says now that Mirai is out of sight.
Kurapika gets into a fighting stance. "Gon, imagine you had something so precious, you only wanted it for yourself. Now, imagine Killua stealing it from you and breaking it. Would you forgive him?"
Gon scratches the back of his head. "Well...yeah. There's nothing I wouldn't share with Killua."
Killua slaps his friend. "You idiot." He whispers in Gon's ear, most likely explaining to him what's going on.
"Oh," Gon says, covering his mouth.
Leorio takes a few steps closer to Kurapika. He keeps his hands up. "Look, I never meant for this to happen. You can hit me all you want, just please...don't take it out on (Y/N)."
Kurapika furrows his brow as he steps back into a normal stance. "Why would I take it out on (Y/N)? She's not at fault." He swallows hard. "Did you come here to protect her from me? Are you insinuating I'd hurt my wife?"
"No, of course not...I just..."
"Leorio," Kurapika says, interrupting him. "I knew (Y/N) was seeing someone else. I just didn't know she was seeing the man who calls himself my best friend."
My mouth falls open. "Kurapika...you knew?"
"Of course. You wanted me to feel the same pain you did, right?" Kurapika's eyes never leave Leorio.
"But...why didn't you say anything?"
He finally looks at me. "Because I deserved it. But..." He lowers his head, hiding his eyes behind his bangs. "Out of everyone...you chose my best friend?"
Guilt consumes me. I suddenly feel nauseous.
"Tell me the truth, (Y/N). Are you in love with Leorio?" Kurapika says, voice hoarse.
My vision is blurry. I blink a few times to allow the tears to fall down. I look at Kurapika. He's patiently waiting for an answer. I can feel Leorio's eyes on me, waiting for a response as well. I look up to see Gon and Killua. They look like they desperately want to escape.
I close my eyes. I can't bear to watch his reaction. "Yes, Kurapika. I am."
"Very well," Kurapika says. "I will not harm him. You have my blessing."
I fall to my knees, sobbing. "But...Kurapika...I love you, too."
He shakes his head. "That's impossible. You can't love two people at once." He turns around and walks to the French doors, looking at the half-built playhouse outside. "Just one thing. Please...don't take my daughter away from me."
"I'd never do that," I say.
He walks back to me. "All I want is for you to be happy. I love you, (Y/N)."
I stand up, throwing my arms around him. I soak his shirt with my tears.
Before Kurapika has the chance to wrap his arms around me, he falls to his knees. I take a few steps back, watching as he falls face first to the floor.
"Kurapika!"
Leorio runs toward Kurapika, immediately assessing him. Gon and Killua run to my side, keeping me from falling.
I push them away, kneeling in front of my husband. My heart skips a beat as I notice blood pouring out of his ears.
Leorio turns Kurapika over. He immediately starts CPR.
Like a fountain, blood streams out of Kurapika's mouth with each compression.
"Gon! Killua! Feel for a pulse!" Leorio shouts.
Gon and Killua immediately run to Kurapika. Killua grabs his hand, checking his radial pulse. His face turns white.
"I...I don't feel one," Killua says.
Gon shakes his head as he removes his fingers from Kurapika's carotid. "I don't either."
Everything around me turns black as I stare down at my husband's lifeless body on the floor. "No," I whisper.
Mirai comes running out of her room, bringing my vision back to focus. She runs to her father. She places her tiny hands on him. "Wake up, dada. It's time to play dragon."
I sit in the front row at Kurapika's funeral. Leorio found out Kurapika's death was due to a complication from his accident two years ago. It was inevitably going to happen. Instead of enjoying every moment with him like I said I would, I took the little time I had to focus on revenge.
My emotions are too raw, so I decided not to write a speech. I look to my right. Leorio hasn't stopped crying since the wake. To my left, I see Gon and Killua, silently crying. Mirai, who is sitting on Alluka's lap, has no idea what's going on. I don't know how I'm going to react when she asks for her father later. She's too young to understand the finality of death.
We ride in silence to the cemetery.
A look of terror crosses Mirai's face as they lower Kurapika's casket into the ground. "Dada?"
Leorio uses every ounce of strength he has to help me. He picks Mirai up and covers her face.
"Mirai, have you heard of a place called Heaven?"
She nods.
"Well...they are making sure your dada makes it there safely.
Tears well up in her eyes. "No. I want dada here."
Leorio squeezes her. "I know, princess. We all do."
She cries. "Dada is making me a playhouse."
"I know," Leorio says, rubbing her back. "I promise...I'll finish building it."
I walk up to Kurapika's tombstone after everyone leaves. I kneel, allowing my knees to rest on the fresh grave.
Kurapika Kurta
XXXX-XXXX
Hunter, Husband, Father, and Friend
He will forever be in our hearts.
I remember his last words. He told me he loved me. Even after finding out what I did, he still loved me.
"Kurapika, I pray Kami will give you a safe passage to Heaven. I know your parents are waiting for you with open arms. I can't wait to one day meet them. I'm sure you'll tell them all about Mirai." I grip my heart. "Baby, I don't know where to go from here. How am I supposed to raise our little girl while I'm still mourning?" I lay on my stomach, pressing my forehead against the dirt so it feels like I'm face to face with him. "Kurapika, you're the love of my life. No matter what my future holds, you'll always be my number one. I love you."
I slowly get back on my feet. I rub my eyes as I watch chains encircle Kurapika's tombstone. Is this his residual Nen? No. A breeze blows through my hair as a feeling of relief washes over me. It's him! I can smell him!
I look up to the sky and smile. "Thank you, Kurapika."
I spend the next couple of days at a hotel with Leorio, Gon, Killua, Alluka, and of course, Mirai. They didn't think it was a good idea for me to go straight home after the funeral. I have a lot of work ahead of me. I don't know if I want to stay at our house or sell it.
I've been taking a lot of walks alone. On our last day at the hotel, I notice someone crying outside. As I walk closer, I notice it's Neon. A rush of emotions flood my veins as I approach the bitch responsible for Kurapika's death.
Instead of lashing out at her, I decide to keep calm.
"Neon?"
She looks up at me with reddened eyes. "(Y/N)?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I...I want to visit Kurapika's grave, but I don't know what to say to him."
I close the gap in between us. I look around, noticing she's alone. "Just allow your heart to do the talking."
She grips my shoulders, pressing her forehead against mine. "I miss him so much. I know you hate me, but...I'm really sorry."
I close my eyes. "I forgive you, Neon."
She brushes her lips against mine.
"I love you, (Y/N)"
My heart pounds against my chest. I take a deep breath.
"I thought you were in love with Kurapika."
"Yes. But he's dead now. You're the closest thing I have to him," Neon says.
She tucks some loose strands of hair behind my ear.
I open my eyes. "Are your guards around?"
"No. Do you want to come up to my hotel room?"
"Of course," I say.
Neon holds my hand as we take the elevator up to her suite.
"After you, Mrs. Kurta," she says when she unlocks the door with the hotel card.
I walk in, taking in my surroundings. She walks me to the massive bedroom. I place my purse on the bed. She presses her lips against mine. I part my lips, allowing her in. She plays with my hair while she kisses me.
She pulls away, laughing. "You kiss like Kurapika!"
I have no idea how to react to her statement. Instead of replying, I turn her around and gently push her on the bed. She lays back as I crawl on top of her, continuing our kiss. I feel her hands slide up my back, unclasping my bra.
I break our kiss. "Neon...I'm scared. I've never done this before."
She stares at me with passion in her eyes. "Like you told me...just allow your heart to take over."
She moans against my lips as I kiss her. While she's busy caressing my breasts, I reach into my purse. I pull out the small metal object.
I pull away, straddling her. "Neon, look at me."
She slowly opens her eyes. They widen as soon as she sees the gun that is pointed directly at her.
"You're the reason Kurapika's dead. Have fun in hell."
I shoot. Her warm blood splatters on me. I watch as blood pours out of the wound the bullet left in her head. The color of the comforter changes from pure white to deep scarlet.
I smile. Revenge is sweet after all.
