My boots squish into the mud as I walk to my favorite reading spot. I usually play with Pairo when I'm finished with my schoolwork, but I haven't been able to see him since he came down with the flu. I sure do hope he gets better soon.
Beautiful green swirl-patterned trees surround me. The lush grass is wet with dew. A flock of birds fly above me as I sit down next to a tree. I open my book to where I left off and begin to read. I can hear the sound of the river in front of me. I sigh. I really am lucky to live here with my clan.
I lose track of time as I become engrossed in my book. I instinctively swat away at the pebbles that are hitting my face. I look up from my book. Where are these tiny rocks coming from? I stand on my feet, looking around. I don't see anyone.
"Over here," someone says.
My ears must be playing tricks on me. I follow the sound of the voice and end up at the riverbank. I look down at the crystal clear water. I jump back, blinking my eyes. What's a girl doing here and how did she find The Lukso Province?
"Hello?" I say, bending over to get a better view. "Are you hurt?"
She shakes her head. "I finally got your attention."
She supports the top half of her body with her arms. My hands instinctively cover my face.
"Uh...your shirt is missing!" I say, turning around so my back is facing her.
She giggles. "Don't worry. My hair covers me well."
I slowly turn back around, peeking through my fingers. I fall on my behind when she reveals the bottom half of her body.
I've read hundreds of books. Many of which included stories about merfolk. But I thought those were all myths.
My mouth falls open as she waves her green fin in the air. The sunlight reflects off her wet scales. To describe it as beautiful would be an understatement.
I wait for the shock to leave my body before walking back to her. "How did you get here?"
A look of sadness crosses her face. "My family was taken away. I escaped and was forced to adapt to freshwater in order to hide out."
My heart aches for her. "Who would do such a terrible thing?"
She reaches up and grabs my arm. She stares at it as she runs her fingers up and down. "There's bad people out there. You and your clan need to be extra careful."
Drops of water roll off my arm. She presses her hand against mine to compare the two. I notice she has a slight webbing in between each of her fingers.
I ignore her warning as my curiosity gets the best of me. "May I ask you some questions?" I say.
She drops my hand and looks back up at me, face flushed. "I'm sorry. I've never touched a human before. But go ahead. Ask me anything."
I pull my arm back, drying it with my tabard. "My name's Kurapika. What's yours?"
"(Y/N)."
"That's a pretty name. How old are you?"
She floats on her back. "Twelve."
"Like me! One more question...how can you understand me? I thought mermaids used echolocation, like dolphins."
She giggles. "We do. However, ever since my family was kidnapped, I learned a few human languages in hopes to hear clues as to where they might be."
I smile at her. "I want to help you."
Her eyes double in size. "You'd help a stranger you just met?"
"Of course. I couldn't imagine what I'd do if someone did that to my clan."
She reaches back up to me. "You're so sweet, Kurapika! Can we be friends?"
I nod. "We're already friends!"
She wraps her arms around my neck. The water feels like tiny knives piercing me as I fall into the river.
I push my feet against the river bed, gasping for air when my head reaches the surface.
(Y/N) swims closer to me. "I'm so sorry...I didn't even ask if you knew how to swim."
I comb my bangs away from my eyes with my fingers. "That's okay. I'm a very good swimmer."
She swims around me, flapping her fin against the water. Flecks of light follow her wherever she goes.
After swimming with my new friend for a few hours, my stomach begins to growl.
"Oh, no! My mother is probably wondering where I'm at. I told her I'd be back before lunch," I say.
She frowns. "Will you be back soon?"
I push up on my arms to get out of the river. "Same time tomorrow. Can I bring you anything?"
She looks at the sky as she ponders my question. "I'd love to try human food."
I grab my book. "Then I shall bring you back something to eat." I wave at her as I walk away.
She waves back. "See you tomorrow, Kurapika!"
I take off my boots before going inside my cottage. I comb my hair with my fingers. Luckily, the sun dried it during my walk home. I look down at my clothes. How am I going to explain this to my mother?
The door creaks as I open it. I peek inside. I don't see my parents anywhere.
I close the door behind me, and tiptoe to the bathroom.
"Kurapika? Is that you?"
I wince when I hear my mother's voice.
I almost make it to the bathroom when I feel her hand on my shoulder. My heart rate increases as I turn around.
She crosses her arms across her chest. "Son, why is your tabard all wet?"
"I...I felt like swimming," I say.
"With your clothes on?" She opens the bathroom door, gently pushing me inside. She walks to the bathtub and turns on the faucet. The steam coming from the water looks inviting.
She unzips my top and pulls it over my head.
"Mom, I'm almost thirteen. I can undress myself."
"Pairo is home with the flu. Do you want to be next?"
"No, ma'am," I say as she peels my pants off.
"Well...you're going to end up with pneumonia." She rests one hand on her hip while pointing to the bathtub with the other. "Now get in the tub."
I wait for her to leave before stepping in. Ahh...the hot water feels so good.
I think about my new friend as I soak in the tub. I can't wait to tell Pairo all about her. He's not going to believe his eyes when he meets her!
As I dry off, I notice my mom placed a stack of fresh clothes next to the sink.
After I get dressed, I walk straight to the kitchen. A variety of food is spread out on the table. My mouth waters as I take my seat. I pick up a bowl of soup. The hot liquid warms me inside as I drink it.
I see my mother from the corner of my eye. I put down my bowl and wipe my mouth.
"Mom, I really am sorry for getting my clothes wet. It won't happen again. I promise."
She pushes herself off the doorframe and walks toward me. She gives me a kiss on my head.
"Kurapika, I don't care about your clothes. What I care about is your well-being."
"But...I feel fine."
She tousles my hair. "That's good to hear because you'll be mopping the floor once you're finished eating."
I sigh. "Yes, ma'am."
Before I crawl into bed, I search through my books for one about mermaids.
My dad walks into my room and kisses me goodnight. He notices the book on my lap.
"What do you have there, son?"
I run my hand across the cover of the book. "Dad, do you believe in mermaids?"
He looks at the ceiling as if searching for an answer. "Hmm...I've never seen one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist."
"Wow, that means we have no idea what's beyond our village. I'd love to explore the outside world one day."
He laughs while he pats my head. "You're just like your mother."
He sits in bed with me and we take turns reading my book until I begin to yawn. He closes the book and tucks me in bed. I fall asleep as soon as I close my eyes.
I try my hardest to hold in my cough while I rise the next morning. The room spins around me as I sit in bed. I lay back down, massaging my temples. I pull the covers over my shoulders, shattering my teeth.
"Kurapika?" my mom says as she opens the door to my bedroom. "Breakfast is on the table."
"I'll be right down," I say, voice hoarse.
She runs to my side. I feel her cold hand against my forehead. My eyes are closed, but I can tell she's freaking out.
I must have passed out because when I open my eyes, I see the village doctor at my bedside. I hear him tell my mother to keep me home until my symptoms pass.
Once I hear him leave, I hop out of bed.
I grip my mother's waist. "Mom, I can't stay home today!" I tighten my hold on her once the room starts to spin again.
She combs her fingers through my hair. "Oh, my sweet little boy. I know you'd rather spend the day exploring. However, you must get well first."
I think about (Y/N) as mom places me back in my bed. I promised to bring her some human food today. What if she's waiting for me?
My eyes get heavy as mom scratches my head. "Mom, will you please bake me my favorite strawberry cake?"
She kisses me on the forehead. "Of course. Now get some sleep."
(Y/N)
I swim as fast I can to my new favorite spot. I lift my head over the surface of the water, immediately searching for Kurapika. I spin around, balancing myself on my fin. My heart feels like it's falling down to my stomach. It's an icky feeling. I don't like it.
He's not here. Did those bad people come for him, too? I told him to be extra careful.
I really hope he's okay. He was so nice to me yesterday. I laugh. He's also kind of cute. I mean...for a human. Maybe I'll wait a little longer for him. I need to know he's not injured.
Kurapika
It's dark when I open my eyes. I can't tell if it's morning or night. How long have I been sleeping?
I place my hand on my forehead. I'm drenched in sweat. That means my fever broke! I throw the heavy blankets off as I hop out of bed. I run to my window, peeking through the curtains. The moon is high in the sky. The sound of crickets fills my ears.
I peek into my parent's room as I make my way down the hall. They're fast asleep.
The moonlight peeks through the bay window next to the kitchen. My eyes widen when I see the strawberry cake sitting on the table. Not only did my mom bake my favorite cake, she made a variety of breads and treats.
I pack my bag full of the delicacies and quietly sneak out of the cottage.
I pass Pairo's house on my way to the river. I tap on his window, hoping he's feeling better.
The curtains move as he draws them open. His face brightens when he sees me. He slides the window up.
"Kurapika! What are you doing here? It's the middle of the night."
"Are you feeling better? Can you come out?"
He raises his eyebrows. "Now?"
I nod. "I have something to show you."
He slides out of his window. We walk to the front of the cottage. He puts on his shoes and we run off into the woods.
"Hey, Kurapika," he whispers. "We'll get into a lot of trouble if we are caught."
I hold Pairo's hand since I know he doesn't see well at night. "Why are you whispering? Besides, all of the villagers are asleep. Who's going to catch us?"
I see him smile from the corner of my eye.
"I trust you, Kurapika."
We stop running once we reach our destination. An owl hoots loudly above us. I lean over the riverbend. Luckily, the moon is full, providing us with plenty of light.
"Kurapika!" Pairo says. "Watch out, you'll fall!"
I offer my young friend a reassuring smile. "It's fine. I won't get hurt. I promise." I lean in closer. "(Y/N)? Are you there?"
Pairo walks closer to me. "Who are you talking to?"
We hear the sound of splashing in the water. He grabs my waist. I fall to the ground as he pulls me back.
"There's something in there...we need to go back home...now!" Pairo flails his arms in the air.
I get back on my feet, rubbing my backside. "This is what I want to show you." I walk back to the river, kneeling when I reach the edge. "(Y/N)? Is that you? Pardon my tardiness, but I was home sick."
Pairo keeps a hold of my pajama top.
(Y/N) emerges from the water. "Kurapika! I'm so happy to see you. I'm sorry you weren't feeling well."
Pairo takes a closer look at (Y/N). His eyes widen in fear. "Kurapika, cover your ears! She's going to hypnotize you with her voice and pull you into the river!"
I let out a laugh. "No, Pairo. You're mistaking her for a siren. She's a mermaid."
He gives me a quizzical look. "There's a difference?"
"Of course there is." I continue to tell Pairo all about (Y/N).
She takes his arm and examines it like she did mine. "Wow...human skin is so soft." She reaches up to pull him closer.
I stop her with my hand. "No! I'm sorry, Pairo isn't a very good swimmer. His legs were injured in an accident." I reach for my bag. "Oh, I almost forgot." I pull the freshly baked treats out for her. "You wanted to try human food. These are some of my favorites."
She takes the slice of strawberry cake out of my hand and almost swallows it whole. The corners of her mouth move upward into a smile. "This is what human food tastes like? It's much better than eating seaweed all the time!"
I enjoy eating seaweed, but I guess I'd get tired of eating it if that's all I had.
The three of us talk until dawn. A shooting star races across the sky. Pairo taps me on the shoulder.
"Kurapika, we better go before our parents wake up!"
I stand to my feet, dusting off my pajamas. "You're right! I don't want to worry them."
"Hey, I have an idea!" Pairo says. He starts to pick a bunch of wildflowers. "If your mom is awake, give her these. Tell her you felt better and wanted to give her a present for taking such good care of you."
He hands me his makeshift bouquet.
"That's a great idea, Pairo! Thanks a lot!"
(Y/N)
I watch as Kurapika and Pairo gather wildflowers. I love the sound of their laughter. Before they run off, Kurapika comes back to me. He hands me a flower.
My jaw drops as I take it. I've never seen a land flower this close up before. "Thank you, Kurapika." I use my arms to pull myself up on land. I move my fingers back and forth, beckoning him to come near me.
He kneels beside me. "Hey, we really have to go. We promise to visit once we finish our schoolwork."
"That sounds nice." I reach over and plant a kiss on his cheek.
I smile as his cheeks turn red.
Weeks pass by and Kurapika and Pairo play with me almost every day.
"(Y/N), Pairo and I won't be able to visit for a while," Kurapika says.
I tilt my head to the side.
"Why not?"
"I have an important exam to take. Do you want to hear the best part? I get to see the outside world!" He splashes water in excitement.
I feel myself frowning. "Kurapika, the outside world isn't as wonderful as you think it is."
Now
Kurapika
I stand in the middle of an abandoned amusement park.
"Hisoka, I have a question for you. Where can I find the scarlet eyes?"
Hisoka sits on top of a dilapidated carousel horse with his left leg propped up. "Unfortunately, that happened before I joined. The boss sells every item after reveling in the spoils for a bit. I assume the scarlet eyes were no exception. And that's all I can tell you on the matter." He lifts his head and stares into my eyes. "But keep this in mind...a spider will keep going until you crush its head."
He wants to form an alliance with me. I turn around to leave.
"Maybe this will change your mind," he says.
I look over my shoulder. "What?"
"The boss is interested in a particular item. A merhuman of some sort."
Visions of (Y/N) flood my brain. I spin around to face him. "A mermaid? What are you talking about?"
"She'll be up for auction. Just thought you'd like to know."
What does he mean she'll be up for auction? She's not an item!
(Y/N)
I'm cramped inside a tiny aquarium. I can't remember the last time I was able to stretch out my fin.
A small strange person is sitting on the floor making copies of all the items that are up for auction. Except, he can't make a copy of me because I'm living.
I stare at the item in front of him. The sounds of screams still terrify me till this day. The smell of blood and burning flesh come rushing back to me. I felt terrible for not being able to help Kurapika's clan.
The day Kurapika told me about his exam was the last time I saw him. I prayed he somehow survived the massacre these terrible people caused. But then he never came back.
I swam back the next day in hopes to see him. There was an eerie feeling in the air that day. I left, only to be caught in someone's net.
A witch kidnapped me, and I became her experiment. She made me drink all kinds of potions, trying to change me into a human. Once she realized none of her magic was working, she sold me for auction.
Now the same criminals who took away my best friend are trying to keep me for themselves.
A magenta-haired woman rolls me in front of the copy maker. "Just make a copy of her. She'll just look like she's sleeping, so what?"
And that's exactly what the copy of me looks like. A version of me floats to the bottom of the tank, appearing to be sleeping peacefully.
Kurapika
I swing open the doors to the auction, breathing heavily. My eyes widen when I see the scarlet eyes up for bid. After composing myself, I make a call to my boss asking if I should bid.
I hang my head once I win. The announcer grabs my attention once he mentions the next item up for bid.
"No...way!" I raise my hand and start to bid.
I know I'm bidding with money that's not mine, but I'm sure Mr. Nostrade's daughter will be excited to add a mermaid to her collection.
I walk up to retrieve the items I won. Due to the size of the fish tank, they promised to have it delivered within the hour.
As expected, Miss Neon jumps up and down in excitement when she receives her gifts from her father.
The gifts that are from my childhood. A pair of scarlet eyes and...my friend.
(Y/N) has been sleeping this entire time. It makes me wonder...is she even alive?
I leave the hotel for some fresh air. Melody takes my place guarding the boss while I collect my thoughts.
I stare at YorkNew City from the roof of the hotel. A familiar silhouette appears from the corner of my eye.
"Hello, Hisoka," I say.
He emerges from behind the shadows wearing a smile on his face.
"That mermaid of yours is a fake. I know where you can find the real one."
Shock fills my veins. "What? Where?"
I conjure my chains, ready to capture any spider that gets in my way. I reach an abandoned building. Glass shatters beneath my feet as I walk to the entrance. Candles light the lobby. My eyes widen when I see (Y/N) inside a fish tank that's barely big enough for her. A look of shock crosses her face when she notices me. She points behind me, as if giving me a warning.
"So...you're the Chain User?" a female voice says.
I turn around. A petite woman wearing a short-sleeved uwagi stands with her arms crossed over her chest.
"I'm here for (Y/N)," I say, ignoring her question.
She lifts her hands, pulling a needle from the pincushion on her wrist.
Based on my visual assessment, she's most likely a transmuter. I don't know what her ability is, but all I need is half a second to use my chain jail on her. That is if she is in fact a spider.
"Answer me. Are you a member of The Phantom Troupe?"
She keeps quiet.
(Y/N) taps on the glass. She's obviously trying to get my attention, but I have to stay focused. If I turn my head, that would allow this potential spider enough time to attack me.
Aura surrounds her as she stares at me. I'm ready, spider.
(Y/N)
I sink to the bottom of the tank. I can no longer bear to watch Kurapika in pain. What was I thinking? I distracted him, giving the spider enough time to wrap her threads around him. There must be something I can do. I look above me. Surely I have enough strength to open this tank. I don't know what I can do to help, but I'm not going to just float in here and watch.
Kurapika writhes in pain on the concrete floor as she tightens her threads.
Dammit...the top won't open. I push the tank with my body, using all my strength. It finally tips over, spilling water everywhere. I crawl beside Kurapika, taking him into my arms.
"(Y/N), what are you doing? You'll die if your fin dries out," Kurapika says. He lifts his head, pressing his lips to my ear. "I have her exactly where I want."
Of course. How can I be so stupid? Kurapika was a smart boy. I can only imagine how intelligent he is now that he's a man.
Tears stream down my cheeks. "Does it hurt?"
"I've been through worse. Now go and keep your fin wet."
I crawl to a puddle of water. "Just so you know, she is a spider."
"Thank you. That's all I need to know."
The spider they call Machi marches closer to Kurapika. She stands over him, placing a foot on either side of his body. "So how exactly did you defeat Uvo?"
I can see Kurapika lift his right hand. He raises his middle finger and a hook-shaped chain rises in the air. Within a split second, the chain wraps around Machi. The threads around Kurapika immediately disappear.
He stands to his feet, releasing another chain. My ears fail me. I can't hear what they're saying to each other. My fin is drying out...I'm fading fast.
I can hear Kurapika panting as he runs with me in his arms. I'm barely conscious when he places me inside a bathtub.
I watch through half-lidded eyes as a look of terror crosses his face. He picks up my fin, but...it's gone. My perfect emerald green fin is gone.
Kurapika picks up one of my legs and examines it as if he's never seen a human leg before.
"How did this happen?" he says, dropping my leg back in the water and picking up the other one.
I splash my feet in the water.
I tell him about the experiments the witch conducted on me. He lifts me up from the bathtub, wrapping a towel around my body.
"Sounds like we need to find this witch," he says.
Kurapika
The adrenaline leaves my veins as I fall on the mattress. So much has happened within a few hours. I found out my childhood friend is still alive, placed a condition on another spider, and now (Y/N) has legs. I take a few deep breaths.
I wrap my arms around (Y/N). "I thought you were dead," I say, holding back the tears that are stinging my eyes.
She sobs into my shoulder. "Me? How did you survive the massacre?"
"I...wasn't there."
She gasps for air. I pull her back to give her space to breathe.
"Hey, are you okay?" I say, tucking some of her knotted hair behind her ear.
She wipes her tears away with the back of her hand. "Yeah. I'm just really happy to see you."
I can't hold back my tears anymore. They stream down my cheeks. "I thought I lost everyone from my childhood." I'm the one who is sobbing now.
She runs her hand up and down my cheek. "Shh...I'm here. We're together again." She looks around the small hotel room. "Wait...did you get married? Do you live alone?"
I sniffle and let out a laugh. "I don't actually live here. And no, I'm not married. It would be pretty difficult to explain why I have a naked woman on my bed." I feel heat rise to my cheeks. "Wait...you need clothes!"
My eyes widen as they fall to (Y/N)'s bare chest. Her breasts are large and hang beautifully like teardrops. Wait...am I drooling? I quickly wipe the corner of my mouth.
She bites her lip. "Right. You humans cover yourselves with clothing."
I cover my eyes while I hand her one of my tabards. "Wear this until I can purchase something in your size."
"This looks like the one you wore when you were a kid!"
"Yes," I say. Things suddenly feel...strange. "Uh...I'll give you some privacy."
She grabs my arm. "Wait! Don't leave me alone. I'm afraid I'll never see you again."
I sit back down next to her. To be honest, I didn't want to leave. "I'll just close my eyes. Let me know when you're fully dressed."
I hear her fall to the floor. My eyes shoot open. "(Y/N)! Are you hurt?"
She rubs her backside. "I guess I need to practice walking."
Right. This is all new to her.
I spend the next few days teaching (Y/N) how to act like a human. We take a stroll downstairs to get ice cream.
"Look, Kurapika! I can do this now."
I let out a laugh as I watch her skip in her new dress.
We wait in line at the ice cream parlor. My hand finds hers and we lock eyes, blushing.
"Uh...what flavor would you like?" I say.
She looks at the selection, confusion evident on her face. "Whatever you get. I don't know what all the flavors taste like."
I smile. "We shall share a banana split then."
I have (Y/N)'s hand in one of mine and our banana split in the other. I push the door open with my hip and we find a table outside.
"Mmm! This is so good," she says.
She practically eats the entire bowl. I put down my spoon and rest my head on my hand, watching her with a smile on my face.
"Oh, I'm sorry! It was so good, I forgot to share," she says.
I run my fingers through her soft hair. Getting all those knots out was a nightmare.
"No, you left me some."
She looks at the empty bowl, confused. "There's nothing left."
My lips find the corner of her mouth. I swipe my tongue over the whipped cream on her face.
She stares at nothing. Oh no...did I make her feel uncomfortable?
(Y/N)
I try my hardest to control my heart. He can probably hear it pounding. The entire ice cream shop can probably hear it!
A look of concern crosses Kurapika's face. "(Y/N), I apologize. I shouldn't have done that."
I shake my head. "No. I'm glad you did." I turn to face him. "Remember when we were kids?"
He nods.
"You see...I had a crush on you. And now that we're grown up, I like you even more. You're still the kind-hearted Kurapika I remember." I place my hand over his heart.
He runs his thumb across my jaw. "I like you, too."
We walk hand in hand back to his hotel room. Once we arrive, he leans me against the wall, taking my face in his hands.
"I have a question for you," he says.
My heart skips a beat. "Yes?"
He presses his forehead against mine. He's so close, I can feel his warm breath on my lips. I'm not used to feeling warmth against my skin.
He's moving in closer. His cheeks brush mine as he leans in against my ear. I giggle.
"May I show you how humans express their love for each other?" he whispers.
Tiny little bumps erupt on my skin. "I'd love that."
I follow him to the bed, breathless with anticipation.
He picks me up and spins me around. I take some of his beautiful hair between my fingers. His hair is one of my favorite colors. It reminds me of the sun. Something I rarely saw when I was a mermaid.
He carefully places me back on my feet.
"You're beautiful. I think I like you better as a human," he says.
A foreign feeling takes over my body. Desire? I must have fully transitioned into a human because I never felt this way before. My heart feels like it's on fire. The flame goes straight to the area between my legs.
The color of his eyes change into a deep crimson. I remember seeing them scarlet once, but not this deep.
The sun just rose, changing the color of the water's surface to a reddish-orange. Frogs jump from one lilypad to the other as I swim closer to Kurapika. He sits with his legs crossed on the grass. He lifts his head from his book, offering me a welcoming smile.
"(Y/N)!" He hands me something called a muffin. "I brought you breakfast."
"Thank you!" I grab it and immediately take a bite. The sweet bread crumbles in my mouth. "What are you reading?"
His smile grows. "My favorite book! I can start it over if you'd like. I'd love to read it to you."
I lean my back against the edge of the river. "I'd love that."
I close my eyes as I listen to Kurapika read. He reads with such enthusiasm. I don't understand most of the words, but it doesn't matter. I'm happy just hearing his voice.
I turn to face him once I finish my muffin. "Kurapika?"
He looks at me like I just interrupted the best part. "Yes?"
"I know you already have a best friend, but I want you to know...you're mine."
Like magic, the color of his eyes slowly change to a color I'm unfamiliar with. I use my arms to pull myself out of the water. Kurapika falls on his back as I jump on him, inspecting his eyes.
"Do all humans have this ability?" I say.
"Wh...what ability?"
"Your eyes...I've never seen this color before."
He covers his eyes. "Oh, no. I'll never pass my exam if I keep allowing my emotions to take over."
I grab his wrists, uncovering his eyes. I stare into them. They are the prettiest color I've ever seen.
He tells me all about this special trait that belongs to his clan.
"Please...don't tell anyone," he says.
I laugh. "Who would I tell?"
He smiles. "I guess you're right." He looks to the side. "Hey, (Y/N)?"
"Yes?"
He looks back at me. "Who says I can't have two best friends?"
Kurapika reaches behind me and unzips my dress. I tilt my head to the side.
"Kurapika, why are you taking my dress off? You told me it looked pretty on me."
He lets out a soft laugh. "It does. However, we need to shed our clothing."
My dress falls to the floor. His beautiful royal blue and gold tabard meets it.
"Close your eyes," he says.
I obey.
I feel his lips against my ear. "Don't be afraid."
"Never. Not when I'm with you."
I hear more clothing fall to the floor.
"Okay. You can open your eyes now."
I smile as I slowly open my eyes. I stare into his captivating eyes, running my fingers down his bare back.
I take a step back, wanting to see all of him. My eyes fall to the area below his navel. I gasp, walking backwards until I fall on the bed.
"Kurapika, what's that?" I point to the strange thing sticking straight up.
He crawls beside me. "It's what makes me a man."
Humans are strange creatures.
He presses his lips against mine. "Do mermaids kiss?"
I nod.
He parts my lips with his tongue. The flame between my legs gets hotter when I feel his tongue touch mine. I don't know what's happening to my body, but...I like it.
He pulls away, gasping for air. "(Y/N), in order to express love, we need to become one."
Liking the taste of his mouth, I continue to kiss him. "How?"
He lays me back, supporting my shoulders with his arm. He uses his free hand to part my legs. His fingers find the source of my flame. My eyes close. Ahh...
He dips one of his fingers inside of me. Then another. He presses deeper and deeper, stretching me open. I understand now. But...is it going to fit?
"Kurapika..."
I watch him through half-lidded eyes. He pulls his fingers out, leaving me empty.
He positions himself over me. "Trust me."
My stomach feels like it's hosting a dance party for fairies. Kurapika holds me close, pressing himself into me. I clench my jaw. I was right...it doesn't fit. He moans into my ear as he tears me in two.
He stops once he fills me all the way. "(Y/N)? Are you okay?"
Tears fall from the corners of my eyes. "Kurapika, we're one."
He nuzzles my neck. "Indeed. You feel amazing." He looks into my eyes. "Am I hurting you?"
"A...a little."
"Focus on my eyes," he says. He kisses my lips.
He slowly pulls back. Then back in. He combs my hair away from my face with his fingers. He touches me like I'm made of glass. I watch as his eyes shimmer. I can almost hear them, except color has no sound.
I can't believe what my body is capable of. Just like my fin transformed into legs, the pain I felt seconds ago vanishes and turns into pleasure.
"Ohh...Kurapika. You feel amazing, too." I lift my hips to meet his thrusts.
His lips meet mine. He kisses me hard, picking up his pace. I grip his shoulders, afraid I'll get lost in the rip current of pleasure.
The sound of our heavy breathing fills the room. He lifts my leg and presses deeper. Just when I thought things couldn't get any better, he finds a place hidden deep inside of me that makes me feel like I'm being pulled deeper into the ocean. Am I still bioluminescent like when I was a mermaid? I certainly feel like I am as Kurapika pulls out...in...out...
He locks eyes with mine. "(Y/N), I'm not going to last much longer. Are you close?"
Close to what?
He thrusts into me. I arch my back, moaning his name. My stomach drops. This new feeling travels throughout my entire body.
I fall on the mattress. My legs tremble involuntarily.
"That's my precious mermaid," he says with a smile.
My chest heaves. "What just happened to me?"
"You just had an orgasm...and I'm close to mine."
I watch as he continues to thrust in and out of me. Sweat drops fall from his forehead. His lovely earring swings back and forth. He clenches his teeth as he throws his head back. His body stiffens before falling on top of mine.
I run my fingers through his sweaty hair. "So this is how humans express their love for each other?"
He waits until his breathing regulates before answering me.
"Yes. It's beautiful, isn't it?"
I smile. "It's the most beautiful experience of my life."
He lifts his head up. "I just forgot one thing."
"Huh?"
"I didn't tell you yet...I love you."
My smile widens. "I love you, too, Kurapika."
"We should find that witch tomorrow. I want to make sure this is permanent."
Kurapika
Did I do the right thing? I didn't intend for this to happen. Making love to (Y/N) was an accident. It's just...after licking the whipped cream from her mouth, my heart started feeling...different. We're not even the same species for Kami's sake. Not to mention the fact that she's my childhood best friend.
I feel a tinge of guilt in my stomach as I pull out of her. A puddle of blood surrounds her bottom.
She must sense my apprehension. A look of concern crosses her face. "Is everything okay?"
I smile. "Everything's perfect." I climb out of bed, tucking my arms underneath her. "Let's get you cleaned up."
I take her to the bathroom. I change the bedsheets while she showers before she sees them.
"Kurapika!" she screams.
I run to check on her. I grip the doorframe. "(Y/N)? Are you hurt?"
"My legs, they have scales on them!"
I slide the glass door to the shower. My eyes widen. "I think we need to pay that witch a visit immediately."
Thunder claps in the distance as we walk out of the building.
"Do you remember where she lives?" I say.
"Close to The Lukso Province."
"Dammit," I say. "We won't arrive until morning."
I let (Y/N) sleep on my lap while we ride the train. I place my jacket over her to keep her warm. She's so innocent. She doesn't deserve to live in this terrible world. She's better off back at sea. But...something inside of me refuses to let her go. I promise to take all responsibility for her. No matter what happens, she will be happy.
"There it is!" (Y/N) shouts as we approach a tiny cottage.
The cottage reminds me of a story I read as a child. Adorned with what looks like little pieces of candy, the cottage looks like it came straight out of Hansel and Gretel. I almost expect to see an oven when the witch opens the door and greets us.
I conjure my chains while I rest my hand on (Y/N)'s waist, holding her close to me.
The witch hugs (Y/N) as soon as she sees her. I have to admit, she's nothing how I pictured her. Her hair is a river of black. Her skin is porcelain, not green. She must have a potion for keeping her youthful appearance. I can't imagine she's as young as she looks.
"Oh, my child! My spells worked. You have legs! I guess I should have kept you a little longer."
She pulls away from (Y/N), looking her up and down.
I see disappointment in her eyes when they meet mine. "Oh. You brought a guest. Let me guess, you fell in love with this human."
I chime in before (Y/N) answers. "Let's get straight to business..."
"Oh, silly boy. I know exactly why you're here. You want to make sure (Y/N) will remain a human forever."
I swallow hard. "Yes."
(Y/N) reveals the scales on her legs. "Am I turning back into a mermaid?"
The witch cackles. "It's the same plot to every fairy tale." She stares at me. "Except this one doesn't have a happy ending."
(Y/N) and I glance at each other.
"What do you mean?" I say, almost choking.
The witch returns her attention to (Y/N). "Did you let this boy plant his seed in you?"
(Y/N) gives her a puzzled look.
I feel my cheeks turn red. "If you're asking if we copulated, then yes. But...what does that have to do with anything?"
She spins around, looking through her organized shelves of potions. "It means everything. The scales on her legs mean she's reverting to her original state."
"But...why?" I say.
She points her slender finger at me. "Because you two are fools. A human can't love a mermaid. And since you made love to her, she will die."
Shock runs down my spine. I swallow the bile that is threatening to come up my esophagus. "Is there anything we can do to fix this?"
The corners of her red lips curve upward, revealing her white teeth. "Of course. There's a solution to everything."
"What is it? I'll do anything!"
(Y/N) sobs, holding the witch for support. "Please...what do I need to do?"
The witch pulls (Y/N) away. "Simple. You need to eat his heart."
I hold (Y/N) while she sobs into my chest. I kiss her on top of her head. "Don't worry. I'll fix this."
The witch separates us. She glares at me.
"You really are a stupid boy, aren't you?"
I scowl at her. "I'm not a boy...I'm a man. And I know there's an alternative. I'm a hunter. There always is."
"Exactly. You're a hunter, not a warlock. You know nothing of magic."
(Y/N) falls to the floor. More scales appear on her legs.
"Kurapika! What are we going to do?"
A wicked smile spreads across the witch's face. "Oh, I forgot to mention...she has to make a decision before her transformation is complete."
Instead of blood, my heart pumps rage through my body. "Then what will happen?"
"She will die," she says, matter-of-factly.
(Y/N) gives me a melancholy expression. "Kurapika, run away from here. I don't want you to die."
"No. This is my fault. If someone has to die, let it be me."
The witch clears off her table, pulling a variety of knives out of the drawers. "Just so we're clear...killing me is not an option. If you even attempt to murder me, (Y/N) will surely die."
(Y/N)
I quickly get back on my feet as I watch Kurapika loosen his shirt. He hops on the table. The witch places a blindfold over his eyes.
I run to Kurapika's side, grabbing his hand. "No! I won't let you do this."
The witch hands me a sharp knife. "Use this one. It won't hurt him as much."
I narrow my eyes on her. "No! I will not kill Kurapika. I love him." I throw down the knife.
The witch rolls her eyes. "You girls are stupid when it comes to love...so quick to spread your legs."
I reach down and kiss Kurapika on the lips. They feel so soft and warm against mine. I lost my best friend once. I refuse to lose him again.
The witch rips open his shirt, exposing his chest. She traces over his heart. "Cut here. You're less likely to damage his heart."
I know what I need to do. I pick up the knife from the floor, grazing it over his skin. His chest moves up and down.
I look up at the witch. "Can't you give him an anesthetic? Surely you have one among your potions."
She gives me an annoyed look. "If it will make you work faster." She turns around and looks through her potions.
While she's distracted, I run to her. I raise my arm and with full force, I pierce the side of her neck with the knife. She slowly turns around to face me, eyes fading.
Fresh warm blood splatters on me. I watch her fall to the floor, gasping for air until she takes her last breath.
I feel Kurapika wrap his arms around me. "(Y/N), what have you done? Remember what she told us? You'll die."
I turn around, resting my hand on his cheek. "I know."
My legs transform back into a fin.
Kurapika pants, tears pouring down his cheeks. "No."
I offer him a soft smile. "Thank you, Kurapika, for being my best friend. And for showing me love."
He supports the top of my body. He plants kisses all over my face. "I know I'm not a prince, but maybe my kisses will reverse the spell."
I feel myself fading. "You're my prince, Kurapika."
I close my eyes. Pairo waves at me, welcoming me to my new home.
Kurapika
I stand on the shore, allowing the tide to wet my feet. The ocean water turns into foam. I walk until the water touches my knees.
I close my eyes. Memories of (Y/N) and Pairo flood my brain. It's been two years since (Y/N) passed away, and I try to visit the ocean as often as my schedule allows. I never forgot the promise I made to (Y/N) when we were kids. I promised to find her family, and I intend on keeping that promise.
Something hits my leg. I grab it before the ocean takes it away from me.
I stare into the glass bottle. Could it be the same one I attached to (Y/N) the day I returned her body to sea? It's strange how it found its way back to me.
I turn around and walk back to shore. I open the bottle to reread the letter I wrote to her. Except...it's not written in my hand.
I sit on the sand to read the letter.
Dear Kurapika,
We know you've been searching for us. Rest assured, we are fine.
From what we've gathered from the letter you left our daughter, you loved her. We can't thank you enough. We also want to thank you for the precious gift you left us. The day we found
(Y/N)'s body was both the saddest and happiest day of our lives. You see, attached to her was a tiny bubble we took care of until it hatched. Now we have the most beautiful granddaughter with golden hair.
I hope you eventually receive this letter. Keep hunting for us. We'd love for you to meet Kairy. Her name means sea. We would also love to meet the human our daughter fell in love with.
Until we meet, take care.
(Y/N)'s parents
My heart fills with warmth as I reread the letter. I gasp for air, not realizing I was holding my breath.
I get back on my feet and look out to the ocean. The waves crash on the shore as if warning me to stay away. No. Never. The job of a hunter is never complete. I have a new mission now. I don't care if it takes the rest of my life, I will find my merchild.
