Two years later...
Kurapika
Before I exchanged vows with Princess Neon, I made it clear that I would still be working as a knight. I was good. No, I was the best and I did not want to let my talents go to waste. She threw a tantrum, but eventually, she agreed with me.
A terrible sickness spread throughout the village and unfortunately, I became infected. Much to Neon's dismay, I insisted on sleeping in the chamber far away from her.
I thrash in bed, hallucinating from my high fever. I have the best doctors, but even they can't control my symptoms. I cough blood into a metal basin. I can't die. Not yet. I don't want Neon to become a widow at such a young age. More importantly, I don't want to die without knowing you're doing well.
(Y/N). I swore I wouldn't think about you after the wedding. I'm a man of my word, and I vowed to Neon that she would be my one and only. Still...I can't control the way my heart feels for you. You are, after all, my first love.
Are you married? If so, I pray he treats you well.
Do you have children? You'd make an excellent mother.
A knock at the door interrupts my thoughts. It must be time for my medicine.
"You may enter," I say.
I immediately pull the blanket over my nose when I see my bride walking toward me.
"Neon, you must leave immediately! I don't want you to catch this illness."
She ignores me, sitting down on the bed. Her eyes are bloodshot, tears spilling from her eyes.
"My Kurapika. The doctor is working on a new medication for you since nothing seems to be working."
I smile. Maybe she can see it in my eyes since I refuse to uncover my mouth. "My beautiful love, I promise you. I'm going to get better. Now get out of here."
She blows me a kiss.
I watch as she leaves, closing the door tightly behind her. Guilt consumes me. Neon loves me with all her heart, and I can't seem to keep myself from thinking about you.
As promised, the doctor walks in with a different antidote. I pray this one will work.
My esophagus burns as I swallow it. I lay back down, allowing sleep to consume me.
"Kurapika, wake up."
I slowly open my eyes. They widen immediately. "(Y/N)? What are you doing here? You'll get sick."
"Shh...you have been cured." You reach down until our lips meet.
I kiss you deeply. Is it possible to pack two years into one kiss? I doubt it, but I'm going to try.
You pull away before I'm ready. I swallow. I must be cured. My throat no longer burns. Or maybe that's just you. Your taste...your scent...your touch...I've missed it all so much.
Tears stain my cheeks as I feel them fall.
"(Y/N), I'm sorry. I should have chosen you."
You undress in front of me and pull your beautiful hair down. I'm completely mesmerized by you.
I reach out and touch your soft skin. Your smile reaches your eyes.
I blush as you take my pajamas off. I must be sweaty from the fever I had. You don't seem to mind as you glide your tongue up my torso to my neck. My head falls back as you kiss the sensitive area under my earlobe.
"Ahh...(Y/N)."
I feel the heart of your femininity slide down my length. I hold your hips as you rock back and forth on me. I thrust my hips up, needing to feel more of you. I pray the walls surrounding us can keep a secret. I've never felt ecstasy like this before.
"(Y/N), please. Run away with me."
You rest your hands on my chest, increasing speed. "Yes! I'll go anywhere with you, Kurapika!"
I love the sound of your voice when you call out my name.
Your breasts bounce. I move my hands up the sides of your body until they meet them. I allow them to bounce in my hands. You say my name louder.
You slam your hips down on me, screaming your climax. I sit up and flip you over. When I pull back to thrust into you, you're...gone.
I jolt up in bed, sweating. "(Y/N)?" I look around the room. "No. It was only a dream."
Guilt consumes me. I know I have no control over my dreams, but why (Y/N)? My heart belongs to Neon. I vowed to always be faithful, and that also includes thoughts. I throw pillows across the room. "I have sinned...just let me die."
I start to pant. Once I use up all of my energy, I fall back and...sleep.
(Y/N)
"Honora, get down from there!" I call out to my curious toddler.
"Look, Mama! I can do this!" She proceeds to balance herself on a large rock close to the pond.
"It's all those books you read to her," my mother says.
I smile. My daughter looks at the world with such innocence. It breaks my heart knowing one day she'll realize the world isn't as perfect as it seems. I never knew I could love something so much. I feel ready to kill anyone who hurts her.
She kicked me the entire time I was pregnant with her. Born two weeks early, she proved to me that she was ready to explore everything around her. She started walking at ten months and instead of saying small words, she spoke in complete sentences before turning two.
I mentioned I named her after a character from my book, but her name also reminds me of her father. He's the most honorable man on this planet and I wanted her name to represent that.
Honora jumps off the rock and skips along the path.
"You're going to rip your dress!" my mother calls out.
I rest my hand on her arm. "Mother, it's fine. Let her explore."
I watch as my daughter runs. The sunlight bounces off her head. She spins around, grinning from ear to ear. I see some of myself in her features, but mostly...Kurapika.
"I want to go there," she says, pointing in the direction of her father's castle.
My heart aches. "Maybe another day."
The three of us visit the village. We usually don't walk this far from the castle, but it's a beautiful day out. Besides, I'm tired of being cooped up in the castle. I can tell Honora is as well.
My mother hates the village. She says it's a place for peasants, and people like us shouldn't be seen here. I ignore her comments and go about my day. I purchase fresh fruits and allow Honora to pick out some books.
We all turn our heads when we hear the town crier ring his bell.
"Prince of The Nostrade Castle is suffering from a terrible illness. Even the best doctors can't seem to cure him," he reads from a newspaper.
My heart skips a beat.
Kurapika?
I want to grab that newspaper and read the article for myself. I look at my mother, making sure she didn't notice my expression.
A look of annoyance crosses her face. "Isn't that the knight who stole from us?" She crosses her arms. "Hmph. And now he's a prince? Serves him right to be sick. I hope he dies."
That's the father of your granddaughter.
I suppress the urge to slap my mother across the face. Instead, I wipe away the tears that have formed in my eyes.
I hold Honora's hand. "Let's go home."
I look up to the sky, praying Princess Neon is taking care of him.
Kurapika
"What...day is it?" I ask the doctor as I open my eyes.
I use what little strength I have to sit up. He fluffs the pillow behind my back.
"You've been out for three days."
I notice he's not wearing a mask over his face.
"Am I still contagious?"
He shakes his head, feeling for my pulse.
I look around the room. If I'm not contagious, then where's Neon?
He adjusts his glasses. "You'll probably feel tired for a few days as your body recovers. You should leave the castle and get some fresh air as soon as you can."
I nod. "Right. Thank you for treating me well. You have my gratitude."
A maid walks into my room holding a basin of heated water. "I'm preparing your bath, Your Highness."
"Thank you. Have you seen Princess Neon?"
She looks at me with a shocked expression on her face. "The Princess has been locked up in her room."
My heart sinks to my stomach as I imagine her crying over me. I'll be sure to see her as soon as I finish my bath.
The maid places fresh linens on my bed while I bathe. I won't need them. My hope is to sleep next to my wife tonight.
I breathe heavily as I stumble back to bed. The doctor was right about the exhaustion. The clean linens welcome me as I crawl into bed. I fall asleep as soon as I close my eyes.
The clock chimes, waking me up. Have I been asleep this entire time? Poor Neon. She's probably been waiting for me.
I slide out of bed and walk to the other side of the castle. Even though she's most likely sleeping, I still want to feel her next to me.
I enter our shared bedroom, closing the door behind me. The first thing I notice is the lantern. She usually turns it off before bed. I hope she's not having nightmares because I'm not with her.
Careful not to wake Neon, I tiptoe to our bed. I halt before opening the canopy curtain. Am I hearing voices?
I must be hallucinating again. I draw back the curtain and a hollow pit forms inside of my stomach. I turn around and slide to the floor. I open my mouth to scream, but nothing comes out.
I cover my ears. Neon screams his name over and over again. The name of the knight who I personally hired to keep her safe while I was ill.
"Kurapika? Darling?" Neon says.
I slowly turn my head around. I don't recognize the woman I'm looking at. "How dare you call me that."
Adrenaline runs through my veins, giving me the energy to stand up to face her.
Neon covers her bare body with a blanket as if I've never seen it before.
"You disgust me." I turn my head to look at him. "You both do."
Neon reaches out to me. "Kurapika...I..."
I jump back, avoiding her touch. "How long have you been sharing our marriage bed with another man?"
She doesn't answer. Instead she stares at me with her mouth open.
"Did you ever love me, Neon?"
She crawls closer to me. "Of course. I still do."
"You obviously don't know what love is."
The other knight quickly dresses himself and runs out of the room.
Tears pool in the corners of Neon's eyes. "Kurapika...please."
I throw my arms up. "Please what? I've been suffering from a terrible illness and you checked on me once. Once, Neon! You didn't give a damn about me. You only wanted to make sure I was sick enough not to realize another man was sleeping in my bed."
I start to walk away.
"Kurapika, where are you going?"
I halt, turning around to make eye contact with her. "Far away from you. You're an adulteress. Come morning, I will tell your father. After that, I will beg the church for an annulment."
Neon covers her face with her hands, allowing the tears to stream through her fingers. "Kurapika, no! Please! I'm sorry."
"For what? Getting caught?"
She reaches out and grabs a pillow, burying her face into it. Her sobs can still be heard.
I hang my head as I walk out of the room I previously occupied.
Instead of going back to bed, I walk to the library and spend the rest of the night there. At my age, I've experienced more emotional turmoil than an elder.
(Y/N)
"Mama, why are you always so sad?" my daughter asks me at breakfast.
She catches me off guard. "What makes you think I'm sad?"
She takes a sip of her juice and sets her cup back down. "Your face."
I pick her up and tickle her tummy. "How can I be sad when I have you?"
She bursts into laughter, forgetting about her previous question. She has his smile. My mother looks at her then at me. A look of judgment crosses her face. Anyone who has seen Chrollo would know that this is not his child.
"Can we visit the village today?" Honora asks when I place her back in her seat.
Thunder claps in the distance.
"I'm afraid not. It sounds like a storm is coming," I say.
She frowns, returning her attention back to her breakfast.
She's not the only one who is disappointed. I was hoping to hear some news about Kurapika.
I needn't worry. He's strong. It's going to take more than a little illness to kill him.
Kurapika
King Nostrade begs me to stay. What a pitiful scene. Especially for a king.
He stands on his knees."Please...this kingdom will be yours one day. We can't leave it up to Neon."
Even Neon's father doesn't have faith in her.
"I'm sorry." I bow. "She'll marry again soon. I'm sure of it."
He shakes his head, clasping his hands together. "But not someone like you. Please. Consider it."
I stare at the empty throne next to him. He has a point. Someone like Neon should not rule an entire kingdom. However, should I sacrifice my own happiness and stay in a loveless marriage?
The answer is clear.
"You have convinced me. I will stay," I say.
Relief washes over him as he gets back on his feet. He shakes my hand.
I not only made a vow to Neon, but to my kingdom as well.
Happiness? I don't even know what that feels like anymore. Where would I even go? I have no family. Neon is my home. As much as it hurts my heart to look at her, I have to do what is right for the people of this kingdom. I'm confident in my ability to be an excellent leader.
A few weeks later, the king dies of a massive heart attack. After the coronation, Neon runs up to me.
"Will you be sleeping with your queen tonight?"
I shake my head. "No. We are only married on paper. Nothing more."
She bites her lip. Clouds of pink rise to her cheeks. "Just so you know, if we don't have any children, there will be no one to take our place one day."
I turn to walk away. "It's been a long day. I'm going to rest. I have a lot of work ahead of me."
The next day, I hop on my horse and ride to the village. I want to talk to my people individually and find out how I can improve their lives.
They all welcome me.
I look out to my castle. Neon, of course, stayed home and did...well...nothing.
I decide to take the long way back to the castle. I have nothing to look forward to there. Besides, it's a lovely day.
"Can I pet your horsey?" A little girl asks me.
I hop off my horse and offer her a smile. "Of course."
I take her tiny hand and walk her to my horse. Her face brightens as soon as she touches the large animal in front of her. Her hair matches mine and she has dainty features.
"Very pretty," she says.
"Thank you." I look around the meadow. "Are you alone?"
She doesn't answer. Instead, she focuses on my horse while tears well up in her eyes. My heart aches for her.
"Are you hurt?" I kneel close to her.
She finally turns to face me. She lifts her dress and shows me a large scrape on her knee. My eyes widen.
"Where is your mother?"
The tiny girl throws her arms around my neck and sobs into my shoulder. I stand up, wrapping my arms around her as if she's my own.
"I know a very good doctor. He'll take excellent care of your knee. I just need to find your mother first," I say, rubbing my hand up and down her back.
"I'm lost."
"She can't be far. Do you know where you live?"
She lifts her head and looks at me. "No."
Right. I didn't expect her to know. "I'm going to help you find her. Don't you worry."
She smiles. "You will?"
"I promise." I lift her up on my horse. "Right after we see the doctor."
I look around again, hoping to see her mother. She's probably worried sick searching for her missing child.
"What's your name?" I ask her.
"Honora." she answers proudly.
Where have I heard that name before?
I get on my horse, holding Honora tightly. "That's a very beautiful name. It matches a beautiful little lady such as yourself."
I take her straight to Dr. Paradinight's office.
"This doctor took care of me when I was sick," I tell the little girl as we walk in.
I explain everything to my friend. He cleans her knee and wraps a bandage around it.
"Go back to your castle, King Kurapika," he tells me.
I lift my hand up. "I told you...it's still just Kurapika."
"Go home, Kurapika. I'll find her mother for you."
I lower my eyebrows. "You will? But...I want to make sure Honora makes it home safely."
He gives Honora a piece of candy. "You don't trust me?"
I look away. "I do...it's just...I feel a connection with her."
He pats me on the shoulder. "Don't tell me you're getting sick again."
I smile. "Fine. I shall take my leave. But please. Keep me informed."
I say my goodbye to my new little friend.
She gives me a frown. "Tell your horsey I say goodbye."
Later that evening...
I walk into the room that I once occupied with my wife. She sits up in bed, excited to see me.
I sit down next to her, staring at nothing. "I...I want children. A lot of them."
She squeals in delight. "Does that mean you'll be sleeping with me again?"
I turn to face Neon. I look her up and down. The thought of sharing a bed with her still disgusts me. "Not yet."
She takes my hand. "Then how are we supposed to make all these babies you want?"
I run my thumb over the top of her silky hand. "I'm open to the idea. Just not at the moment."
She moves closer to me, planting a kiss on my cheek. "What made you change your mind?"
"I helped a child today. It brought me joy."
Early the next morning...
I head straight to Dr. Paradinight's office. The bell chimes when I walk in.
He walks out to the lobby, tilting his head. "Kurapika? Are you feeling ill?"
"No. I just want to make sure that little girl found her mother yesterday."
He laughs. "Of course she did. Mothers always check medical facilities when their children are lost. In fact, she came in minutes after you left."
"And you told her not to worry about the cost, right?"
He spins me around and shows me the door. "Yes. Now go on. You have more important things to do than spend the day here with me."
I look around the lobby. Since it's still empty, I decide to tell my friend about the possibility of me having children of my own.
"That's wonderful. Now go! You should get started on that right away."
I smile. He's right.
I walk out, noticing the children playing from the corner of my eye. Why do I feel paternal all of a sudden?
I rush back to the castle. I find Neon having tea in the garden. I pick her up and walk her upstairs to our bedroom. I gently place her on the bed.
"Kurapika, is something wrong?"
"Undress," I say.
Once I undress myself, I join my wife in bed. I close my eyes as I enter her. Thoughts of you rush in. I imagine myself running my fingers over your perfect body.
I kiss your neck while I thrust deeper into you. I hear your voice calling my name as your walls contract around me. I bite my tongue, keeping myself from calling your name as I spill my seed inside of you. You are the only one I want children with.
Once I make sure you have every drop of me, I pull out. I slowly open my eyes. Disappointment runs through me when I realize it's Neon in bed with me.
Where are you?
(Y/N)
I watch as Honora plays outside. She pretends to be riding a horse. I smile. Nothing brings me more joy than knowing she has an imagination.
"Kurapika, get on your horse! We must save the villagers!"
My eyes widen. What did she just say?
I run to her, kneeling. "That name...where did you hear it?"
"A man named Kurapika helped me find you. He's very nice."
My heart races inside of my chest. "Wait...you met him?"
She nods, wearing a huge smile on her face. "Yes. Can we visit him?"
I turn around so she doesn't see the tears falling from my cheeks. I hold my heart. He met...his daughter.
Kurapika
Months pass by and nothing. Neon shows no signs of pregnancy.
I watch as she cries. I take her head and rest it on my chest. "No need to worry. It's probably me."
She blows her nose into a handkerchief. "A child is the only thing that will bring us closer together and I can't even give you that!"
She's right. If she can't give me the one thing I want, then what use is she to me?
I ponder that thought as I look out to the courtyard from the balcony. Life just loves to give me small tastes of happiness then take it away.
I walk back inside the room, facing Neon.
"We'll try for one more month. If nothing happens, then forget I even brought up the idea."
She grabs my arm, sobbing. "Please, Kurapika. Don't give up on us."
I didn't mean to be so harsh on her, but it's the truth. Simply spreading your legs doesn't make you a good wife. Or a good queen, for that matter. Since being given the crown, I have yet to see her fulfill her duties as a queen, leaving everything to me. What makes me think she'll be a good mother? I surely don't want one of our servants raising our children. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.
I pull her away from me. "I must leave."
She sniffles her nose. "Will you be back in our bed tonight?"
"Perhaps."
I ride my horse back to the meadow where I met Honora. I sit on the grass, allowing my horse to drink from the stream. I take the heavy crown off of my head, staring at the jewels that adorn it. I grit my teeth. I never wanted this life. I simply wanted to be a knight, fall in love, and live a simple life just like my parents did.
I throw the crown, falling back on the grass. Honora. I've never seen a child so beautiful before. I bet her parents are proud. They are probably in love, living the life I want for myself. I wonder if she has any siblings.
Honora...I remember now! That's the name of the girl from the book I read with you. I smile. What are the chances?
A clear picture of her comes to my mind. Her golden hair, her tiny lips, and a smile that has the power to make the devil himself want to be good. A smile like...
I jolt up. Honora can't be older than two. You were married to Chrollo two years ago. Did you have a child with him?
I run my hand through my hair. No. She looks nothing like him. However, I see you in her features. Did you remarry?
No...her eyes. Why didn't I notice them before? They look exactly like mine.
I get on my feet, grab my crown, and hop back on my horse. I ride straight to your castle.
The butler allows me in. Your father is the first to greet me.
"Your Highness! To what do we owe this pleasure?"
What a scumbag. Last time I stood here, he was having me arrested for something I was framed for. Now that I wear a crown on my head, I mean something to him.
I hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet run to me.
"Kurapika!" Honora says.
I reach down and allow her to fall into my arms. There's no doubt in my mind that this child belongs to me.
The Lord holds his large belly with his hand while laughing. "She likes you!"
"How old is she?"
It takes him a few seconds to answer. Shouldn't he know the age of his own granddaughter? "Two."
I do the math in my head. This precious child was conceived in the carriage after my battle with Chrollo.
"May I speak with (Y/N)?" I ask, standing back up while holding my daughter.
His eyes move from mine to Honora's. Lines of wrinkles form on his forehead as he notices the resemblance.
"Of course. Make yourself comfortable."
The butler shows me to the main living area. I sit on a chair in front of the welcoming fireplace. So many memories flood my brain.
I kiss the top of Honora's head. She smells just like you. She looks up at me and smiles. She kisses my cheek and I can feel my heart melt. I'm already in love.
"Kurapika?"
I turn my head so fast my neck hurts.
I watch as you slowly walk until you're standing directly in front of me. I stand, still holding Honora.
I swallow hard. You look more beautiful than the day I left you.
"(Y/N)?"
Honora places her hand on my cheek, turning my face in her direction. "You know my mama?"
I nod. "I do. We're..."
"Old friends," you say. You take Honora out of my arms. "What are you doing here, Kurapika?"
You hold Honora tightly.
"What's her surname?" I say.
"She has my name. Why do you ask?"
I take a step toward you. "I know, (Y/N)."
Your eyes widen. When you finally blink, tears fall down your cheeks.
"Kurapika," you whisper. "I will not allow you to take her from me."
I reach for your shoulder. You pull away.
"No, (Y/N). That is not my intention." My eyes fall to the little girl in your arms. "Can we talk in private?"
I wait for you to take our daughter out of earshot.
You straighten your dress when you return. "My mother is looking after her. Let's go."
We walk to the garden and sit on the familiar bench.
(Y/N)
I can't look at him. I'm afraid I'll burst into tears if I do. He moves closer to me. The butterflies are fluttering inside of my stomach. Why does he still have this effect on me after three years?
"You're gorgeous, (Y/N). Motherhood looks good on you," he says.
I stare at the ground. He's so close, I can feel his warm breath against my skin. I quickly cover my arm, not wanting him to see the goosebumps.
"I...I heard you were sick. I'm glad to see you have recovered."
"Thank you."
We remain silent for a few seconds.
"What do you want, Kurapika?" I finally ask.
He places his hand on my thigh. I notice his wedding band immediately. He moves his hand down until it reaches my knee. I suck in a breath of air.
"I miss you, (Y/N)."
Please don't say that.
"I...I miss you, too."
He traces circles around my knee with his finger. I wish the thick fabric of my dress wasn't in the way.
"Am I Honora's father?" he says, almost a whisper.
I lock eyes with him. "Y...yes."
He clenches his jaw as he creates distance between us. "Why didn't you tell me?"
He takes his hand away, leaving me with an intense craving for him. Tiny flames appear in his eyes.
"You stole two years from me," he says. "Two years I could have spent getting to know my daughter."
Ugly guilt settles inside of my stomach. "I...I didn't want to ruin your life. You were a new prince."
The flames in his eyes grow. "You think I give a damn about that?"
"I honestly thought she was Chrollo's." Heat rises from my shoulders up to my cheeks. I hunch over, remembering the embarrassment I felt when she was born. If the church knew, I would have been banished. "Then...she opened her eyes. That's when I knew she belonged to you."
He stands up and starts to walk away. I want to stop him, but my bottom feels glued to the bench.
I open my mouth to call him, but no voice comes out.
He halts as if he heard me, looking over his shoulder. "(Y/N), I will return."
Return? I feel my forehead crinkle.
He jumps off the ground and runs back to me. He lifts me up and our lips meet. I feel the rhythm of his heart. I'm not a thief. I am not taking his heart away from Neon. How can I? It never belonged to her in the first place.
The blood of this man runs through my daughter's veins. I don't care what the church says. What Kurapika and I have is true love, and they are not going to stop us from being together.
He breaks our kiss, setting me back down on my feet. Then he turns around and leaves.
I fall back on the bench, touching my lips.
Nothing can wipe away this smile on my face.
Nothing except...
My mother slaps my cheek as soon as I walk back inside the castle.
"I am no fool, (Y/N)."
I support my cheek with my hand.
She crosses her arms over her chest. "You laid with that knight, didn't you?"
I look away, not wanting her to see my face. The salt from my tears sting my eyes. "Y...yes. He's Honora's father."
A look of disapproval crosses her face. "I knew that the day she was born." She taps her foot on the floor. "Well? Is he going to acknowledge her as his daughter?"
I turn my head to face her. "Of course he is. Kurapika is a man of honor."
It feels like tiny daggers are coming out of her eyes and piercing me. "He's a king. You think he's going to give up that responsibility to take care of a strumpet such as yourself?"
My cheeks burn. "I...I don't know."
Her arms fall back down to her sides. "The good thing is, Honora is now officially a princess. Unlike her mother who messed that opportunity up."
Chrollo wasn't even a real prince. Besides, she's the one who forced me to court him.
Kurapika
"I'm renouncing the throne," I say to Neon.
She falls to her knees, gripping my legs. "No...please. You said we could try for one more month."
I take the crown off my head. "Neon, I have a daughter. As much as I want to keep my responsibilities with the kingdom, she comes first."
She looks up at me, confusion evident on her face. I tell her the truth, not sparing any details. She stands up and pushes me.
"And you called me an adulteress? You're no better!"
I dip my head. "I'm sorry," I say, voice raspy.
Her hand meets my face. My body can take her tiny punches, but I'm pretty sure her high pitched screams are deafening me.
Once her tantrum tires her out, she takes a seat in the main living area, breathing heavily.
"I have an idea," she says.
I bend my ear forward in order to hear her through the ringing she left in my ears. "What was that?"
"I have an idea. Why don't you invite your daughter to live here with us? I'm sure her peasant mother wouldn't mind."
I lift my hand, ordering her to stop talking. "Her mother is no peasant."
She rolls her eyes. "All of you knights copulate with the peasants."
I shake my head. "Maybe the other knights you invited into our bedroom, but not me. Like I mentioned before, she's the daughter of Lord and Lady (L/N)."
Her eyes triple in size. "Her? Wasn't she married?"
It's my turn to widen my eyes. "Did you not hear a word I said? I told you everything, Neon. This just proves you don't ever listen to what I have to say." I slap my forehead.
"I do listen. You just like to go on and on about boring things."
Dumbfounded, I turn around to leave.
"Kurapika, I didn't mean that. Please...don't leave me! I don't know how to rule a kingdom."
Like a weed that has been trying to stretch through concrete, the truth finally comes out. Neon never loved me. Only the idea of me.
"I'd never leave you with that responsibility. I'll work for the court and make sure everything gets done properly."
She cries into one of the couch cushions. "I'm your family, Kurapika. Not her."
I sit down next to Neon. I don't want her to think I don't care. I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt.
"Neon." I place my hand on her shoulder. "We're simply not meant to be."
She scrunches up her reddened face. "But...the way you made love to me made me feel like we were."
I jump back. That's because I was thinking about...you.
(Y/N)
The sun starts to set. I look at the sky through Honora's window. We just finished reading a storybook. I tuck her into bed, trying my best to forget about what Kurapika said about returning. I hate to admit it, but Mother was right.
I take a walk in the garden, watching as the sky changes colors. For three years, I've been a tiny seashell trying my best to be pushed onto Kurapika's island. Even though I held Honora's paternity to myself, I still didn't want him to forget about me.
"There you are, my forbidden treasure."
I spin around. Kurapika stands in front of me, dressed casually in a hose and tunic. The moon provides enough light for me to see his beautiful features.
As much as I try, I can't seem to keep my heart under control. Like waves in the ocean, it pushes me towards him. I finally made it to his island.
He catches me before my knees weaken. "Say something. Anything. I want to hear your sweet voice."
I inhale the scent of his neck. "I...I love you, Kurapika. Please don't leave me again."
"Never," he whispers.
"What took you so long?"
He lets out a laugh. "Renouncing the throne and begging the church for a divorce isn't a quick process."
I look into his eyes. "So...you're no longer king?"
"No. Just a commoner."
I smile. "You've never been a commoner, Kurapika."
He tightens his grip around me. "No. However, it's the life I want to live. With you and our child."
He sets me back down and stands on one knee. "I've had the privilege of being king. However, the most honorable title would be husband. Husband to (Y/N)."
I fall on my knees in front of him. "Kurapika, what are you trying to say?"
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a ring. "Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
I stare at the beautiful ring he holds between his thumb and index finger.
"But...what will the church say?"
He shakes his head in frustration. "I don't care about the church. What I care about is you and Honora. So...will you answer my question?"
"Of course, Kurapika. Yes. My answer is yes!"
He slides the ring on my finger. I notice tears falling from his cheeks.
I tilt my head to the side, smiling. "You're crying."
He wipes his tears away with his hand. "I love you so much, (Y/N). I just hope the rest of my life is enough time to show you how sorry I am for everything that has happened between us."
I lower my eyebrows. "Sorry for what? You saved me from Chrollo."
He places his hand over his heart and hangs his head. "I should have never allowed that to happen. That night...you wanted to run away with me. To be honest, I wanted to take you with me to meet my parents." He lifts his head and I notice sadness in his eyes. "I guess...either way...it was too late. He had already killed them."
My hands tremble. I inhale a deep breath and scream. "No! Chrollo was a monster. I was married to a monster!"
Kurapika takes me into his arms. "Shh...his soul is burning in hell. He's paying for his sins while my parents watch us from Heaven."
He rubs my back while I sob into his chest. "I'm sorry. Your parents...I'm sure they were kind people."
He kisses the top of my head. "They were the most kindhearted people. It's a shame they left us early. They were so proud of me, (Y/N)."
We both sit on the concrete pathway in the middle of the garden, crying into each other's shoulders.
He finally pulls away. "Be that as it may, this should be a happy moment. Let us celebrate. Is Honora awake?"
"I'm afraid she's not." I twirl his golden hair between my fingers. "Where will you sleep tonight?"
He rests his hand on my cheek. "Worry not about me. Come dawn, I'll be waiting for you at the church. Tell no one."
I press my lips against his. "I'll be there."
He stands up, offering me his hand. I take his hand and allow him to help me up.
"Till then, may your dreams be filled with visions of me."
I bite my lip. "I love you."
He shakes his head and smiles. "To hear you say those words makes me the happiest man alive."
The next morning...
My mother has no problem looking after Honora while I go off to marry Kurapika. I kept my promise and didn't tell her, but I can tell she knows I'm up to something.
"Off to the village in your best dress?" she says.
I look down and straighten my dress. "Yes. I feel like looking nice today. I shall return shortly."
I kiss Honora and run out of the castle.
I can see Kurapika waiting in front of the church. I hop out of the carriage and run to him.
I reach up to kiss him, but he stops me.
"Not until we are married, my treasure." He runs his thumb across my lower lip.
He holds the door open for me as I enter the beautiful church. Stained glass windows make up most of the walls.
Moments later...
Kurapika storms out of the church as I follow close behind. Tears pool in the corners of my eyes, blurring my vision.
"Who are they to tell us we can't marry?" he says. "Just yesterday, I was their king. Now they want to count all my sins." He runs his hand over his face. "I suppose...I should tell them the truth about my previous marriage."
I furrow my brow. "What are you talking about?"
A look of seriousness crosses his face. "Neon broke our vows. While I was suffering that terrible illness, she invited another knight into our bed."
My mouth falls open. "You mean...she didn't take care of you?"
My question makes him laugh. "(Y/N), the only person she knew how to take care of was herself. She was a terrible wife."
I stomp my foot. "So...tell them!"
Sweat drops form on his forehead. How does a man this perfect exist? Even after the way Neon treated him, he still doesn't want to give her a bad name. If I was in his position, I'd want to rip her hair out.
Does that make me a bad person? I feel like marching to her castle and teaching her a lesson. She took advantage of Kurapika's kindness and he's the one being punished.
An elderly man approaches Kurapika. "Good day, King Kurta! Why the melancholy expression?"
Kurapika bows in front of him. "I'm sorry, sir. I'm no longer the king. I renounced yesterday."
The man gives Kurapika a perplexed look. "I don't believe it! You were the best king we ever had. Please tell me you are telling me a joke."
"I wish I was. However, Queen Neon and I...well..."
The old man holds his hand up. "You don't need to explain yourself to me. If forgiveness is what you're seeking, then you're at the right place."
Kurapika shakes his head. "No. Not even the church will forgive me." He motions toward me. "You see that beautiful lady? She agreed to marry me, however, the church won't allow us to wed."
The man looks at me then back at Kurapika. "Do you have your rings?"
Kurapika reaches into his pocket. "Yes. Why?"
The old man smiles. "I am a priest. Now, Sir Kurta, do you know your vows?"
Kurapika nods.
"Tell them to your maiden."
"But, sir..."
The man brings us closer together. "Go on."
Kurapika takes my hand. "I, Kurapika Kurta, pledge to thee, (Y/N) (L/N), my love, my sword, and my service, from this day forth. As the knight serves his king, so shall I serve thee in all things."***
I stare into Kurapika's eyes. "As a Lady of grace and dignity, I, (Y/N) (L/N), take thee, Kurapika Kurta, to be my wedded spouse. To comfort thee in adversity, to care for thee in sickness, and to honor thee above all others until death parts us."***
The elderly priest's wrinkles deepen as he smiles. He claps, pronouncing us husband and wife. Kurapika and I share a kiss.
"Now...go on! You two have a new journey to begin."
Kurapika bows in front of him again. "Thank you. I am in your debt."
He waves Kurapika off.
Kurapika helps me get on his horse. He immediately senses my apprehension.
"Don't be afraid. Just hold onto me," he says, hopping on and guiding his horse.
I obey. "Where to now?"
He looks over his shoulder and smiles at me. "To consummate our marriage, of course."
Butterflies flutter inside my stomach. It's been years since Kurapika and I...
He stops his horse in front of a small cottage. He gets down and helps me off.
"Where are we?"
He wraps his arm around my waist. "Our new home." He walks me down the walkway. Flowers line either side of the path. He opens the door and carries me over the threshold. "I know you're used to living in a castle, but I promise, you'll love it here. It reminds me of the house I grew up in."
I take in the beauty of this storybook cottage. "It's perfect! Honora is going to love it here!"
A soft smile forms on Kurapika's face. "I'm glad."
I laugh as he carries me into our bedroom. He sets me down and rests his hands on my lower back. He sways from side to side.
"I don't hear any music," I say.
"We don't need any."
I hook my arms under his and we continue to dance. He slowly slides his hands up my torso and finds the zipper to my dress.
"Mrs. Kurta, I want you to know I'll always be here to protect you. I will never hurt you. I also promise to fulfill my duties as husband and father. With that being said, I will now express my love for you."
He unzips my dress, kissing my shoulder as he slides the fabric down my arms. I close my eyes, allowing him to take over. Heat rises to my cheeks. I'm sure they are beet red.
He glides his tongue over my shoulder to my neck. His tongue presses into the delicate skin. He kisses my hot cheek and pulls away.
"What are you thinking, my treasure?"
I open my eyes and stare into his. They are filled with the same passion I remember years ago.
"I'm thinking...you are far more experienced than I. I hope I am able to fulfill your desires."
He lets out a laugh. "If I remember correctly, you did more than fulfill my desires. So much...we conceived a child."
It's my turn to laugh. "You are correct. That was the greatest night of my life."
He kisses my earlobe. "Let's make this night better," he whispers.
The heat I felt in my cheeks rushes down to the wet area between my legs. My dress falls down and I'm left in my undergarments.
My new husband unclasps my brassiere, allowing my breasts to bounce free. His mouth falls open as he watches me in fascination. His hands return to my lower back. They slide lower...and lower. He squeezes my bottom. I smile. He hooks his thumbs under the fabric of my panties and pulls them down.
"My darling husband, I believe it's your turn to disrobe."
I watch as Kurapika frantically takes his clothes off.
"Having trouble, my dear?" I say, amused.
I help him loosen the belt to his cotehardie. He fumbles out of the rest of his clothing.
Battle scars cover his gorgeous body. I can't help but notice the one next to the V on his lower abdomen. I brush my fingers over it.
"Does this hurt?"
He pushes my hand away from his fresh wound. "Don't worry about that. Focus on me, not my wounds."
My eyes fall to his manhood. We've done this before...so why does it feel like it's the first time?
He lays me down on the bed, reading my eyes.
"(Y/N), I sense something is troubling you. Please. Share your thoughts with me."
I wrap my arms around his shoulders. "Nothing is troubling me, my love. I've just never felt so overjoyed before."
He brushes my lips with his. My legs open involuntarily. He positions himself over me. His eyes never leave mine.
"Ready?"
I nod.
I feel every inch as he enters me. Once he's all the way inside, he stops, allowing me to adjust. I rock my hips against him, begging him to continue. He pulls back until he's almost all the way out and thrusts back into me. He starts slow, picking up speed as my moans grow louder. He breathes heavily against my ear. The room starts to spin around me.
Much to my dismay, he starts to slow down. Beads of perspiration cover his face. Surely he did not finish...right?
"Kurapika?"
He offers me a smile. "Not to worry. I just need a little break."
I run my fingers through his hair. Did I really expect to live the rest of my years without him? I kiss him softly on his lips. These beautiful lips were made for me. Not that evil wench who calls herself queen.
Kurapika plunges back inside of me. I gasp at the sudden burst of pleasure. Over and over again, he pushes me closer to the edge until...
I fall.
All of the shooting stars I've made wishes on surround me as I fall from the sky. I feel Kurapika's rapid breaths on my skin as he falls down with me. Then suddenly, I'm floating.
Since I need not worry about keeping quiet, I scream out my orgasm as Kurapika fills me. I float in the air. I must be too high since I'm lacking oxygen. If I don't come down soon, I might pass out.
Kurapika kisses me and I slowly drift back down. My eyes flutter open. I smile when they meet him. His angular eyes fall shut as he smiles.
"I always knew you would be mine," he says. "From the moment I met you at the dinner table."
My hand finds his and our fingers interlock. "Me too. My wish finally came true."
He uses his free hand to caress my cheek. "We can finally forget about the past. The ugly past that haunted my dreams."
I melt into the bed. We no longer need to perform this beautiful act of love in secret. He's mine now. We share the same name. The same house. The same bed.
My lovely thoughts are interrupted as he pulls out of me, wincing in pain.
I look down.
Red.
The color red covers my abdomen as blood seeps from his fresh wound onto me.
"Kurapika! You need a doctor!"
He holds his abdomen as he falls on his side. "My friend...he's a doctor."
I quickly put my clothes back on. "Where can I find him?"
He takes a few deep breaths. "He's the doctor who kept Honora safe until you found her."
"Right!"
I remember...Honora mentioned Kurapika helped her find me when she was lost.
"Please...hurry."
I turn and run out of the cottage. I stare at his beautiful horse. I've never been on one alone before, but I know I can get to the village faster if I rode her. I brush my fears aside and climb.
I point to the direction of the village. "Take me to Dr. Paradinight's office!" I talk to her as if she'll understand me. She does nothing. Tears stream down my face. "Please...Kurapika's hurt."
With the sound of his name, she bolts. I almost fall off as she gallops to the village. Adrenaline runs through my veins.
She must know Dr. Paradinight well because she stops directly in front of his office. I jump off and run as fast as I can inside. Ignoring the patients waiting in the lobby, I scream for the doctor.
The receptionist gives me a puzzled look. I slam into the desk, breathing heavily.
"Please...Kurapika...he needs the doctor!"
She motions toward an empty chair. "Please have a seat. The doctor will see you shortly."
I ignore her and run to the back of the office, opening every door until I find Dr. Paradinight.
I interrupt him as he examines a patient. My eyes focus on his.
"It's Kurapika. He needs you."
We rush into the cottage. I direct him to our bedroom.
I can hear Kurapika moaning in pain as I open the door. I plant a kiss on his forehead while squeezing his hand. The color vanished from his face.
"Let me take over," the doctor says.
I move aside, watching as Dr. Paradinight examines Kurapika.
"This is a nasty wound. What happened?"
"Ne...Neon. She stabbed me with a dagger as I was leaving the castle," Kurapika says.
I feel my blood boil. I leave Kurapika in Dr. Paradinight's care as I sneak out of the cottage.
The cold wind blows through the tiny window high above. My arms are being held up by chains, making it impossible to shield myself from the cold. Maybe threatening The Queen was a terrible idea. I was immediately thrown into the dungeon.
"Please! I have a daughter. Let me out at once!"
Neon laughs, throwing a cross in my direction. "You stole Sir Kurapika from me and had a child with him on purpose. You better ask for forgiveness before you find yourself burning in hell."
I kick the cross back to her. "You are the one who needs to beg for forgiveness. Your sins far exceed my own."
Her cackle echoes as she walks away from me.
The blood flows down my arms, leaving them with a tingly sensation. I stare at the cross lying on the concrete. I had no idea falling in love was considered a sin.
Kurapika
"Thank you, doctor. I feel much better now," I say, shaking my friend's hand. "Have you seen my wife?"
He smiles. "So the two of you are finally married?"
I return his smile. "Yes. Life has decided to give me a break."
"I shall take my leave. I want you back in my office in a few days to check your wound."
I nod. "I promise."
Once he leaves, I support my freshly bandaged wound as I get out of bed. "(Y/N)? Where shall I find thee?"
Silence fills the cottage. I reach out for my sword, but...I could have sworn I placed it in the foyer closet. The medicine Dr. Paradinight gave me must be affecting my memory.
I look out the window and find my horse thrashing its head. I immediately run to her. "Do you know where I can find my bride?"
I hop on and she takes me to...
My former castle.
I walk up the stairs that lead to the massive door. I don't bother knocking. I use my key and push the guards aside.
"I demand you tell me where (Y/N) is at once!"
I feel my heart rise to my throat as I follow them down to the dungeon.
"Kurapika!" you scream.
I use my keys to open the door. I run to you, immediately freeing you from the chains.
"(Y/N)!" I rub your arms. "How did you end up here?"
You fall into my arms, sobbing. "When I found out Neon was the one who hurt you, I couldn't help myself."
I inhale the scent of your hair. "You heard that?"
You tighten your grip around me. "Yes. Why didn't you tell me? Taking care of yourself should be top priority."
"You're my top priority."
Our heads turn toward the door. Neon stands grinning from ear to ear. "You found her? That's nice. Now you can keep her company."
She shuts the door, locking us both inside. I can feel you panic in my arms.
"I'll have you both executed! Kurapika, I'll have (Y/N) beheaded first...that way you can watch." Neon snickers. "And don't think your key will work on this lock. I planned for this to happen."
It appears we were both married to monsters.
"Need not worry. The town is on my side. They will not allow us to be executed, no matter what Neon says."
You pull away, looking at me with misty eyes. "But...our daughter. She's probably wondering where I'm at."
I press my forehead against yours. "Trust me. I was looking forward to telling her the truth about me."
Night falls. You shiver against me. "Take this," I say, wrapping my coat around you. We lay back on the thin cot on the cold floor.
"But...you'll freeze to death," you say.
I run my fingers over your neck. "Not unless we..."
The rattling of keys takes my attention away from you.
"King Kurapika, get out of here!" The door opens.
I smile. I knew my two young friends would come and save us.
You sit up, looking at them in surprise. "Who are they?"
I tuck some loose strands of hair behind your ear. "Just some friends of mine. They work in the kitchen."
You stare in their direction. "But...they're so young."
I help you on your feet and we walk out of the dungeon. I bow in front of my friends.
"Thank you, both. Even though I am no longer king, I'll make sure the two of you are rewarded generously."
They run back to their quarters as we leave the castle to find my horse.
Epilogue
I once said life was a game. Although I still find that to be true, sometimes we pull the wrong card. We just have to be ready to play. Am I winning? As I watch my little girl play with her dolls, I smile. Yes, I am winning.
"Here, daddy. You can have this one." Honora hands me one of her dolls.
You were right. She loves living in our little cottage. "Why thank you!"
The aroma of the stew you've been simmering all day fills the room.
"Time for dinner!" you shout.
Honora and I take our seats at the small kitchen table. You happily fill our bowls.
You insisted on becoming a great cook now that we don't have the luxury of having our own personal chefs. Let's just say...you're still learning. I blow the steam away from my spoon and smile.
"This smells great, my love," I lie.
I swallow a spoonful of salty stew. I only lie to protect your feelings.
You clap your hands. "You really mean it? I worked hard on this recipe."
Watching you smile is like experiencing a rapture. I stand up and walk toward you, wrapping my arms around your waist. Honora abandoned her bowl of stew minutes ago, returning her attention to her dolls. I press my lips against yours. You laugh.
"If it's so good then why don't you finish it?"
You caught me. "I just want to make sure to leave room for dessert."
You gently push me away. "Go finish your dinner, Kurapika."
After dinner, I clean the kitchen and heat up water for Honora's bath.
Once I finish washing her, I wrap the towel around her tiny body and take her to her bedroom. I must admit, I don't miss the castle. The long walks from one room to the other was tiring.
"Daddy!" she screams in fear.
My heart drops. "What is it, my everything?"
She points to her curtain. "It's a spider!"
I smile. "I'll take care of that for you." I grab the spider with my bare hand and squeeze it.
She smiles. "You're so brave. When I grow up, I want to marry you."
I plant a kiss on her head. "I shall be waiting."
I make sure she's asleep before leaving her bedroom.
I find you in bed, reading. You put your book aside when you notice me.
I don't say a word as I crawl next to you. Not wasting time, I pull your nightgown off. I slip my own pajamas off and position myself on top of you.
I reach down, making sure you're ready for me. I move my fingers up and down your slit, spreading your labia apart. Your wetness feels like silk on my fingers.
A moan escapes my throat as I enter you. Your delicious warmth welcomes me. You wrap your legs around me, and I begin thrusting in and out of you.
You throw your head back. "Kurapika...please...never stop."
A smile spreads across my face as I watch you. Nothing brings me greater happiness than pleasuring you. It doesn't matter how bad a day I have. All that matters is us sharing our love in this bed.
I pull you up, straighten my legs, and tighten my grip around you until you're sitting on my lap. The fire from the hearth leaves a beautiful silhouette of your body on the wall. We don't move. Instead, we stare into each other's eyes, savoring this moment.
When I can no longer bear to wait another second, I grab your hips and pull you up and down my length. I have to cover your mouth to silence your screams.
I catch you in my arms as you fall back. I run my fingers up and down your body, allowing you to recover.
I thrust my hips up and down into you. It's your turn to muffle my screams as I fill you. My body convulses as I experience pure rapture.
A mess of limbs spread across our bed. I breathe heavily, remembering how we made it this far.
Of all the duels I've been in, convincing your parents to allow me to take care of you was the hardest.
After a well deserved punch in the jaw from your father, I begged. If it weren't for Honora, I don't think we'd be here right now.
Honora pointed directly at me. "Your name is Kurapika and you have that big white horsey."
Tears fell down my face as I ran to her. "Yes, I do." I wiped my tears and combed her golden hair away from her delicate face. "But you can call me...daddy."
The tiny girl stared at me, confusion evident in her eyes. She turned her head to look at her grandmother. "But you said my daddy was called Chrollo."
Your mother's mouth parted open. She knew all along, didn't she?
"Please, mother," you say. "Kurapika may longer be king, but he means more than a title."
I stood up. "And for the record, I am not a thief. Chrollo framed me in order to steal (Y/N) from me."
You turn my cheek until I'm facing you. "What are you so deep in thought about?"
I turn on my side, taking a few strands of your hair between my fingers. "You dug a hole beneath me causing me to continually fall in love with you."
You smile. "My perfect knight." You crawl out of bed, covering your body with a blanket. You grab a book from the shelf and throw it in the fire.
I sit up in bed. "Isn't that your favorite book?"
You wipe your hands on the blanket. "It used to be. But the couple didn't end up together. Our story is my new favorite."
I open my arms, inviting you to sit back down next to me. Your lips brush against mine.
"Our story is my favorite as well."
A worried look crosses your face. "I just hope our Honora ends up with her knight. I'll never tell her who she should or shouldn't marry."
I let out a laugh. "She wants to marry me."
You hold my face, laughing with me. "She already has good taste. I pray she finds someone like you."
"How can she not? She is just like her mother."
"I love you, Kurapika. I'm so glad you returned to me."
I place my hand over your heart and yours over mine. "As am I. No spell can ever come between these hearts."
