"(Y/N), put the knife down. Let's talk about this."
I feel the sharp cold blade against my throat. You're on top of me, putting me at a disadvantage.
"No, Kurapika. You don't understand." Tears fall down your cheeks and drop from your chin. "They are making me do this."
One year earlier...
Another auction. Seriously, how much of this shit...excuse me...junk does Neon need? I shouldn't use profanity, however, I'm getting rather sick of attending these auctions. Not to mention the shopping trips.
I lean down to my colleague's height. "Melody, cover for me. I'll be right back."
"Of course, Kurapika. Take all the time you need," Melody says.
I leave my colleagues to watch over Neon. I walk across the hotel lobby to the bar. I saw you walk in moments ago. I can't miss the opportunity to introduce myself to you.
I stop a few feet from the bar. You're alone. I take a deep breath, summoning the courage to talk to you. This is ridiculous. I'm an adult. A hunter. Why does this feel like the greatest challenge I've ever faced?
I take a seat on the barstool next to you. You glance at me and return your attention to your drink.
"Excuse me?" I raise my hand, hoping the bartender heard me.
He walks toward me, wiping the counter. "What can I get you?"
I clear my throat. I've seen Leorio do this a thousand times. "Uh...I'll have whatever this gentleman is having." I motion toward you. "And while you're at it, please make him another one."
"Sure thing."
You look at me, furrowing your brow. "Thank you?"
"You're welcome." I extend my arm to you. "My name's Kurapika." I search my brain for a pickup line I've heard Leorio use. "Uh...do you have a name, or can I already call you Mine?"
You stare at my hand then at me. A confused look crosses your face.
I slap my forehead. Why did I say that? None of those cheesy lines ever worked for Leorio.
"I apologize. I don't have any experience in this department," I say.
"What department?"
The bartender returns with our drinks. I leave enough jenny bills on the counter to cover the cost.
"Nevermind." I chug my drink. "Mm...this is good. What is it?"
You take a sip from your drink. "It's just sake mixed with Yakult."
"I'll have to remember that." I finish my drink and hop off the stool. "Enjoy the rest of your drink."
I turn to leave. I feel your hand on my shoulder.
"Why are you leaving so soon?"
I slowly turn back around. "You want me to...stay?"
You smile. "Isn't that why guys buy each other drinks? To talk and stuff?"
I sit back down. "And stuff?"
"Yeah. We get drunk then go back up to one of our hotel rooms." You order us another round of drinks. "I'm (Y/N), by the way."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, (Y/N)." I make another attempt to shake your hand. "Sorry about the awkward introduction earlier."
You shake my hand. "Don't worry about it. I was kinda flattered. No one has ever tried to pick me up before."
I pull my hand back. "I find that hard to believe."
"You're cute." A mischievous grin crosses your face. "So what do you say? Wanna fool around?"
"Uh...I've never done anything like this before."
You brush my bangs away from my face with your fingers, but they fall back in place. "That makes two of us."
We take turns pinning each other against the walls of the hotel room. My phone vibrates in my pocket. Without checking the caller, I toss it on the floor.
I pull my lips away from yours to take a few breaths of air, but like magnets, they find yours again.
We stumble across the room, falling on the bed. Laughter ripples through me. You support your abdomen, laughing even harder.
"My doctor told me I shouldn't mix alcohol with my medications, but I'm having a great time," you say.
Medications? I want to ask why you are on medication at such a young age, but I'm feeling too good.
"Come here, you," I say, pulling you close until our bodies meet.
Our lips lock. We grind our hips together as we share wet kisses. Dizzy, barely aware of what we're doing, I allow you to undress me.
I don't know if it's the alcohol, but I have this strong desire to feel you inside of me.
I squirm. "(Y/N), please...touch me."
You fumble to get out of your clothes. You laugh. "Trust me, I'm working as fast as I can."
I close my eyes. I struggle to breathe when I feel your hand wrap around my erection. I open my eyes and watch as you move your hand down then back up. You stop at the head, using the clear fluid to moisten your fingers.
I grip the sheets, allowing a moan to escape my lips. You press your finger inside of me. A jolt of pleasure shoots down my spine. You move your finger in and out while stroking my shaft with your free hand.
"No," I say as I feel you leave me.
You reach down and glide your tongue over my lower lip. "You want me?"
"Please...more than anything." Our erections collide as I lift my hips up.
Stronger than Zetsu, I can't move when you're on top of me. Dumbfounded, I can't believe a stranger can make me feel so amazing.
You sit back up. I can hear the sound of foil ripping. I sigh. Thank goodness one of us remembered.
You lift up one of my legs and find my opening with the tip of your penis. Luckily, the condom is prelubricated. You press into me. The alcohol must be acting as an anesthetic because I expected to feel a lot more pain.
You slowly press deeper. In...out...in...
"It's okay, (Y/N). You're not hurting me."
You don't waste time. You disappear inside of me and find a rhythm that works for the both of us. You grab my erection, stroking it as you thrust in...and back out.
"Kurapika, you feel too good. I'm gonna come."
"Ohh...me as well."
Is that what's happening? I fill my lungs with air and hold my breath. This pleasure I can only describe as ecstasy builds in the spot you continue to hit and travels up to my penis. From there, it travels throughout my entire body and like an overfilled balloon, I explode.
I blink a few times. "Ow, damn," I say, massaging my temples. The sun peeks through the curtains. I turn around and widen my eyes. Your head is down, face first, on the pillow. The bedsheet covers you from the waist down.
My brain attempts to recall the events that occurred last night. The auction! Melody must be worried about me.
I hop out of the bed and search for my pants. I find my phone and notice the twelve missed calls from her. I immediately call her back.
"I apologize for leaving early last night...I'm fine...I'm still at the hotel. I...uh...had a little too much to drink. Long story. I'll see you in a few hours."
I end my call and turn back around. My eyes return their focus to you. I have to get ready for work, but I don't want to leave without saying goodbye.
I shake my head and look at my phone again. I send my best friend a text message.
Leorio, are you awake?
I see the three dots move immediately.
Leorio: Yeah. Just leaving work. What's up?
Me: Had a one-night stand. What is the proper protocol for leaving?
Leorio: I literally choked on my coffee. You, of all people, had a one-night stand?
Me: Yes. Please, help me out.
Leorio. Okay, calm down. Is she still asleep?
Me: He is.
Leorio: Right. Sorry for assuming. Anyway, yes, grab your shit and get out of there before he wakes up!
Me: But...
Leorio: What? Don't tell me you already fell for the guy.
Me: Of course not. I just feel rude. Should I at the very least leave a note?
Leorio: No. Get the hell out!
Me: Will do. Thank you for your assistance.
Leorio: Good luck. I want to hear all about it later.
I sigh as I watch you sleep. My heart rate begins to rise. You groan as you lift your head from the pillow. You look back at me, offering me a sleepy smile. Your eyes move down. I can feel myself blush. I have yet to put my clothes back on!
"You're gonna have to give me a few minutes to take care of that. I don't know about you, but I have a killer headache," you say, your head falling back on the pillow.
Take care of what? I look down. Oh. Oh!
I point to the bathroom. "I was actually about to take a shower. I have to get ready for work."
You lift your arm in the air, waving your hand. "Wait for me."
I walk into the bathroom and look at my reflection. Dark half circles rest under my eyes. My hair is a tangled mess. My eyes search the counter. Luckily, the hotel stocked the room with necessities like toothbrushes and toothpaste.
After emptying my bladder, I grab a toothbrush and squirt toothpaste on it. It doesn't matter how hard I brush, I can still taste the sake from last night.
The door opens behind me. You walk in and lift the toilet seat. Not caring that I'm standing just a few feet away, you urinate.
As much as I like my privacy when I shower, I realize that this room only has one bathroom. I don't expect you to wait for me to finish to start getting ready for the day.
I turn on the faucet and wait for the water to heat up. You brush your teeth, glancing my way.
"Want me to join you?" you say.
I nod. Wait. Why did I nod?
I step in. You follow behind me. I proceed to wash my hair, trying my best to ignore the fact that I'm sharing a shower with someone. After rinsing the shampoo out of my hair, I grab the conditioner.
You take it from me. "Can I?"
I lower my eyebrows. "You want to condition my hair?"
You squirt some into your hand. "Yeah. Your hair is super soft."
Without waiting for my answer, you take it upon yourself to finish my haircare routine.
Your hands run down my neck, past my collarbone, all the way down my torso. You grip my hips, pulling me until our most intimate parts are touching.
Suds fall down my body as the shower sprays hot water on me. Your touch feels better now that I'm sober. You wrap your hand around both of our erections. Our breathing becomes uneven as you move your hand faster up and down. The pleasure is so intense, I'm afraid I might fall.
My lips find yours and we both moan into each other's mouths as we climax.
"I wish...I wish we could spend the rest of the week together," you say.
"Yes. Just you and me in this hotel room."
We both find the coffee shop and practically run to it.
I take a sip, feeling the caffeine course through my veins. I look at you over the coffee lid. You have a satisfied grin on your face. I guess this is where we part ways.
"Uh...thank you for last night. I had a lovely time," I say, nursing my coffee with both hands.
Your smile grows. "Yeah, same here!"
I extend my hand to you. "Take care, (Y/N)."
You shake my hand. "That's not my name."
I jump back, embarrassed. "It's not?"
"Nope. My name is really...Mine."
You lean forward, bursting out in laughter.
Heat rises to my cheeks. I look away. "You're making fun of that cheesy pick line I used last night, aren't you?"
You slap my shoulder. "I'm sorry. It was just so fuckin adorable."
I check the time. If I leave right this minute, I just might make it to work on time.
"I'm glad I amuse you. I have to go to work now," I say.
"Okay. See ya!"
I turn around and start to walk away. I look over my shoulder. You smile and wave at me. I wave back. Should I have given you a kiss or something? No. That's not how these things work. I still can't help but feel guilty. Damn.
I spin around and walk back toward you. You tilt your head to the side, giving me a surprised look.
I kiss you on the cheek. "I know I already said it, but...thank you. Last night was the first time in years I felt happy."
"Hey, no need to thank me. I had just as much fun. I'll never forget you, Kurapika."
I smile. "Yeah." I study your features. You look more handsome in the daylight. "I wish my job wasn't so demanding. Otherwise, I'd say let's do this again sometime."
You wave your hand in front of me. "Stop right there. I know you're feeling guilty. It's okay. My doctor told me I shouldn't get involved in a romantic relationship anyway."
Right. You mentioned being on medication. I want to ask why, but I know it's none of my business.
"I suppose we should follow the doctor's orders then."
I take a few steps back. My eyes never leave yours.
I want to feel your lips on mine again.
I want to experience last night again.
Unfortunately, I have a feeling deep inside my stomach that the universe wants to keep us apart.
(Y/N)
I run up the stairs to my apartment, taking two at a time. I unlock my door and push it open.
Instead of the usual K-Pop music that usually welcomes me, I hear...silence. "Mio? Are you home?" I check the time. Maybe she left for work already. I take off my shoes and walk to my bedroom.
I practically scream when I feel someone wrap their arms around me from behind.
"Boo!"
I spin around. "Dammit, Mio! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?"
My petite roommate holds the wall for support while she laughs. Strands of hair fall from her messy chestnut-colored bun. I can't help but smile. When those dimples appear, I know she's happy.
I grab her and take her with me to my bedroom. I throw her on my bed.
Her smile fades and she positions herself into a sitting position. "I was about to call the police. Why didn't you come home last night?"
I shrug my shoulders. "I dunno. Maybe because I met someone."
Her jaw drops. "You did?" She leaps forward and I catch her. "Tell me all about him!"
I spin around and allow us both to fall on my bed. I stare at the ceiling, bringing back my memories from last night. "Average height, blonde, and a body worth killing for."
She gasps. "Sounds hot. Does he have a brother?"
I let out a laugh. "Doubt it. There's no way this universe made two perfect humans. They already used up all the beauty and poured into him."
She punches my shoulder. "Listen to you. Always so romantic. Anyway, when are you going to see him again?"
I sigh. "I'm not. It was just a one-night stand."
She stands on her knees and punches me repeatedly. "You...had a...one-night stand?"
She tickles me with her tiny punches. "Ow!" I pretend she's hurting me. "Cut it out already!" I grab her wrists. She pouts. There's nothing worse than upsetting Mio. "I'm sorry. I was drunk."
Her eyes widen. "You drank alcohol? You know you're not supposed to do that!"
I take the loose strands of her hair and place them back in her bun. "Hey. I'm older than you. You don't have to act like you're my mother."
She looks away. "Still. I care about you, (Y/N)."
I smile. "I know. And I care about you too. You know I already consider you my sister." I sit up, gently pushing her off me. "Come on. I'll make us some tea."
I notice a stack of bills sitting on the kitchen counter. I sort through them. "Hey, Mio? I thought you said you were going to take care of these."
She sighs, taking mugs out of the cabinet. "I told you. I'm taking extra classes this semester so I had to cut back hours from work."
I stare at the words on top of the paper. Final Notice.
"Fine. I'm working on a big project so hopefully it will pay enough to cover this month's rent." I put the stack down and return my attention to the tea I'm supposed to be making.
I pour hot water into Mio's mug. She allows the tea to seep before taking a sip. "So...do you at least remember his name?"
I lean on the counter. My lips curve up into a smile. "Kurapika."
She reaches over and touches my cheek. "You're blushing. You must really like him."
I close my eyes, picturing his face. "I do."
She punches the counter, taking me out of my trance. "Too bad. He's obviously a whore. You don't want to get involved with someone like that."
I shake my head. "No...he told me I was his first."
She rolls her eyes. "Tch. That's what they all say."
Kurapika
Leorio stares at me. I shift in my seat. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
He leans forward. "You promised me details about last night."
I lower my eyebrows at him. "I said no such thing."
He points a finger at me. "Hey, you were the one who asked for my help. Now that you got some pu..., or whatever you got, you don't need me anymore, huh?"
I put my chopsticks down and cross my arms. "Fine. I met a man while working at the auction last night. He had the most dreamy eyes I've ever seen. We had a few drinks and went back up to my hotel room."
A mischievous grin crosses his face. "And?"
I know what my best friend wants to hear. I return his smile. "We had sex, Leorio. I was afraid I would have to pay for a new bed because we practically broke it."
He gags, waving his hand in the air. "Okay...I don't need details."
My smile widens. "You asked."
He looks at me, seriousness evident on his face. "You took off without saying bye, right?"
I look away, chewing the inside of my cheek. "Uh...not exactly."
"Kurapika?" His voice deepens.
I return his gaze. "He woke up. I couldn't just leave."
"So what did you do?"
"We...uh...fooled around in the shower."
He closes his eyes and shakes his head. "You have a lot to learn."
I give him a dismissive wave. "No need. I don't plan on making a habit out of this."
His long arm reaches me from across the table. He pinches my cheek. "Great! So that means you can go out with me tonight? I'm off so I was hoping to score. You can be my wingman."
I can think of a thousand things I'd rather do. One being performing acupuncture on myself. I sigh. Despite myself, I suppose I do owe him a favor. "Fine. But please...don't make me do anything foolish."
That sly smile I know so well spreads across his face. "Don't you worry. I'll make sure you have a few drinks in you."
I press my palm against my forehead. It's going to be a long night.
(Y/N)
Now I remember why I don't drink. The depression that comes the next day crawls around my brain like a small monster. Rent is past due, my bank account is almost at zero, and I'm lonely as hell. Mio had an evening class to attend so I'm just sitting on my couch staring at a blank TV screen. I'm holding the remote, but I don't plan on turning it on. Nothing can distract me from the emptiness I feel.
I stand up, tossing the remote on the floor. The batteries fall out and roll across the wood. I run to my bedroom to change. I make a stop in my bathroom to make sure my hair isn't in its usual messy state. My eyes fall to the row of prescription bottles next to my sink. I pick one up, reading the warning label. "Do not drink alcohol with this drug." I put it back in place. "I guess I won't be taking my pills tonight."
The cold air welcomes me as I step out of my apartment. I run down the stairs to the nearest bus stop. Instead of going back to the hotel's bar, I decide to go somewhere local. Besides, like I mentioned before, I don't have a lot of money to spend.
I laugh to myself. Not even an hour ago, I was complaining about how alcohol affects me. Now here I am, on my way to a bar. Fuck it...I'll just sleep all day tomorrow while Mio is at school. Poor girl. She's overdoing it with the amount of classes she's taking this semester. She's hoping to get into law school next year.
I hop off the bus and walk into the first bar I see. I find an empty seat in the back. I order my usual and take in my surroundings as I wait for my drink.
Wait. Is that...
Kurapika
Leorio practically has to drag me inside the bar. Remind me. Why did I agree to do this?
I immediately feel sorry for the black-haired woman he's checking out.
I order a sake with Yakult. After a few of them, I start to feel good.
Leorio taps my shoulder, looking the brunette's way. "Hey, that's the one! Go tell her the doctor is ready to see her."
I raise my hand. "I'll do no such thing."
A look of panic crosses his face. "Shit!"
I look over my shoulder. A nice looking woman with long legs approaches us. Leorio grabs me and presses his lips over mine. He pulls away. "Play along," he whispers. He closes his eyes and continues to kiss me.
I pull my tongue back and pretend to kiss him. I have no idea how this will help him get laid tonight, but I'm too drunk to care.
He finally releases me. The woman frowns and walks away.
I wipe my mouth. "Leorio, do you mind explaining why you just kissed me?"
He leans forward. "Did you notice that woman walking toward us? She's a nurse at the hospital and won't leave me the hell alone. Maybe now she'll think I'm gay and won't continue to pursue me."
"I don't get it. She's beautiful. I'm sure she would have slept with you."
He finishes his drink and orders another. "Already has. But she's got crazy eyes, if you know what I mean. I'm not getting into that shit."
I have no idea what he means and I don't care to ask.
"If the two of you already copulated, then she obviously knows you're straight."
He shrugs his shoulders. "It worked for now."
"You're a horrible kisser, by the way," I say.
"Tch. I wasn't trying. Trust me, if that was a real kiss, you'd be begging for more."
I open my mouth to say something in return, but a tap on my shoulder interrupts me. I put my glass down and turn around.
"Hey, Kurapika. Sorry to interrupt your date, but I wanted to say hi."
My eyes widen. "(Y/N)?"
Leorio turns around and extends his arm to you. "Doctor Leorio here. Nice to meet ya."
You shake his hand. "Wow. A doctor? You have good taste, Kurapika."
I look at Leorio then back at you, waving my hands in the air. "No, we are not on a date. Leorio's just a friend."
You let out a laugh. "Really? That sure was one hell of a kiss."
The room spins around me. "Uh...uh..."
Leorio hops off his stool and wraps his arm around your shoulders. "He's telling the truth. Besides, Kurapika's not my type. I prefer women with longer hair and bigger boobs."
I scowl at my best friend.
He lifts his glass up and laughs. "You two have fun," he says.
I watch with clenched teeth as he walks away and sits next to the brunette he was stalking earlier.
You take Leorio's seat. "Kurapika?"
I turn slowly. I stare into your mesmerizing eyes and swallow hard. "(Y/N)...what you saw..."
You lift your hand. "You don't have to explain yourself to me. It's not like you're my boyfriend or anything."
I nod, unable to take my eyes off yours. "Right."
(Y/N)
"Drinking two nights in a row?" I ask the flushed blonde sitting next to me.
He looks at his drink. "I promise...I rarely drink. My friend invited me out and..." He shakes his head. "To be honest, I couldn't shake the guilty feeling I had all day."
I tilt my head to the side. "What do you feel guilty about?"
He looks at me with glassy eyes. "You."
I jump back. "Me?"
Those lips I tasted just this morning wrap themselves over his perfect teeth. "Yeah. You see...I've never been a believer in one-night stands." He hangs his head. "Let's just say life has been hitting me hard lately."
I offer him a smile and place my hand over his. Is love at second sight a thing? "Have you spoken to a therapist?"
Creases appear between his eyebrows. "No. Should I?"
I laugh. "No. They're a waste of time and money." I lean my head forward until I feel his warm breath on my face. I shouldn't be taking advantage of him right now. I know he's drunk. But...I can't help myself. I brush my lips over his.
He gasps at the sudden contact. He parts his lips. I'm in. Too deep. I can feel eyes on us, but I continue. I grab the back of his hair, pulling him closer. I smile against his lips. As our tongues collide, I can taste sake and Yakult. He remembered my favorite drink.
I break our kiss. He looks at me with questioning eyes.
"(Y/N), why did you stop?"
"Kurapika, you're drunk. I don't want you to feel guilty again tomorrow."
He leans in for another kiss, but I pull away.
His cheeks turn a darker shade of red. "How about we get out of here and get some coffee?"
"That sounds like a great idea," I say.
He hops off the stool and I have to catch him before he falls. He locks his arms around my shoulders, holding on like he's hanging off a cliff. He's so fucking adorable when he's drunk. I just hope he'll still want me when he's sober.
We hold hands while we walk to the nearest coffee shop. The lanterns hanging alongside the pathway sway from side to side as the wind blows.
"It's cold," Kurapika says.
I stop walking and take him into my arms. "This should keep you warm." I steal one more kiss.
He pulls away, smiling. He looks at me through half-lidded eyes. "You're right. I feel warm now."
I hold his arms. "Then why are you shivering?"
"You just have that effect on me."
I take his hand in mine and we continue to walk. "I wish you were my boyfriend."
He trips over a rock. I catch him again.
"You are my boyfriend, silly."
I help him brush the dirt off his suit. "Let's get you sober."
After two cups of coffee and an egg sandwich, Kurapika begins to sober up.
"Feeling better?" I say, biting into a croissant.
"Much. Thank you for watching over me."
I swallow. "Anytime, boyfriend."
He hides his smile behind his mug. "I like the sound of that."
My croissant falls on the table. I stare at him with widened eyes. "Really? But...we barely know each other."
He sets his mug down on the table. "I know. I'm looking forward to learning everything about you."
I arch an eyebrow. "Are you sure you're still not drunk?"
"Come here."
I stand from my seat across from him and move to sit closer to my...boyfriend.
Kurapika
Things are getting heated up as I kiss you. Hands everywhere, desperate to feel skin. My suit jacket is already on the floor and you're starting to unbutton my shirt.
After the coffee shop, you invited me back to your apartment. Luckily, the roommate you told me all about on the way over is not home.
I pull away. "Umm...where's your bathroom?"
You point to a door across your bedroom. I climb off of you, excusing myself.
I sigh in relief when I see a bottle of mouthwash. I don't want to continue to kiss you knowing I taste like alcohol and coffee. I see a row of prescription bottles out of the corner of my eye. I suppress the urge to look at what they are for. I'll wait until you're ready to tell me.
I walk back to your bed and crawl on top of you.
"Wanna be on top or bottom?" you say.
Dammit...there's that guilty feeling again. I roll off of you and lay on my back.
"Bottom?"
I take a deep breath. "Actually, I think we should slow things down. I know we already had sex, but..."
"I agree."
I lift my head. "You...do?"
"Yeah. Let's get to know each other better."
I sit up and we both lean up against the headboard. I give you a kiss on the lips. "I'm Kurapika...Kurta. I'm a hunter. I work a lot. On my off time, I enjoy reading. My favorite genre is fantasy. I'm an orphan and an only child."
You kiss both my cheeks. "I'm (Y/N) (L/N). I'm a graphic designer. I work from home. On my off time, I play video games with my roommate, Mio. I...uh...also have a mental illness. That's why I take medication."
I squeeze your hand. "Mental illness?"
You look away. "Yeah. I can't keep a relationship."
I turn your face, forcing you to look at me. "Hey. If you can handle my work hours, I'm sure I can handle whatever illness you have."
"My doctor says I have schizophrenia, but I don't believe him. I mean...I don't have any of the symptoms."
I cup your face in my hands. "Maybe the medication is working for you."
You chew your bottom lip. "You're probably right. Now that you know...do you still want to be my boyfriend?"
I run my thumbs across your cheeks. "Of course."
(Y/N)
Mio comes home shortly after Kurapika leaves. She throws her backpack on the floor and takes off her shoes.
"Hey, (Y/N). Have you eaten? I'm famished."
I pause my video game and look at her from the couch. "Yeah, I ate. Hey, I have some news!"
She walks to the kitchen and grabs a bag of chips. "Yeah?" She opens them and slumps down on the couch next to me. "Tell me about it."
I smile so wide, my face hurts. "I saw Kurapika again."
She pushes a few chips inside her mouth. "You did? Don't tell me you slept with him again."
I shake my head. "No. But...we're official now! Isn't that great?"
She drops her bag of chips. "Wait...what? You can't have a boyfriend."
"Who says?"
"Your doctor!" she shouts.
I shoot her an annoyed face. "What do they know?"
"Uh...I don't know. They only attended school for eight years plus residency."
I roll my eyes.
Mio grabs my shoulders. "(Y/N), I'm only saying this because I care about you. I don't want you to end up with a broken heart."
I push her away. "I won't. He knows. Besides, he has childhood trauma."
She claps her hands, mocking me. "A perfect match!"
"C'mon, Mio. I thought you'd be a little more supportive."
She gives me a kiss on my cheek. "I'm sorry. I promise not to say another word. But I want to meet him."
I bite my lip, picturing Kurapika. "Yeah! I'd love for you to meet him."
She pushes me over. "Now hand me my controller. Time to kick your ass!"
We end up playing video games until three in the morning.
Kurapika
I can't wipe the smile off my face. The other passengers on the train must think something is wrong with me.
I reach into my pocket for the key to my apartment. I almost unlock it when I decide to see if Leorio is home yet. He lives in the apartment across from mine. I grab the spare key he gave me and unlock his door, praying he doesn't have a woman over. I take off my shoes and walk through the dark apartment. The light to his bedroom is on. I place my ear against the door, just to be safe. The only sound I hear is his television. I knock.
"Leorio?" I push open the door.
Disappointment washes over me when I notice he's already asleep. Damn. I was hoping to tell him the good news.
I hear my name as I walk down the hallway. I smile and run back to his room.
He puts on his glasses and pats the empty space on his bed. "What's up?"
I refuse to sit on his bed. I don't know what goes on in here and I don't want to know.
"Uh...can we talk in the living room?"
I tell him all about (Y/N) over green tea.
"Calm down, teeny bopper," he says.
I don't appreciate his comment, but I'm too happy to make a big deal about it.
"What happened to that girl at the bar?"
He flinches. "I'd rather not talk about it."
From past experiences, she either slapped him in the face or told him she already had a boyfriend.
He pats me on the shoulder. "I'm happy for you, Sunshine."
I walk toward the window above his kitchen sink and look out. I'm tempted to tell him about (Y/N)'s condition, but I decide to keep it to myself. Besides, I'm sure (Y/N) doesn't want other people to know.
"Thank you, Leorio."
I leave his apartment. I walk into mine and the first thing I do is take a quick shower. Once I get comfortable in my pajamas, I pull out my laptop. I read all about (Y/N)'s condition.
"Strange. He doesn't show any of these common symptoms." I say to myself. "However, we've only known each other for forty-eight hours."
I shut my laptop and place it on my bedside table. I turn off the lamp and fall on my mattress.
Is this what happiness feels like?
Six months later
(Y/N)
Kurapika lifts his head off my chest. "Move in with me."
I bunch up his hair, seeing what he'd look like with a ponytail. "Are you serious?"
"Positive."
I close my eyes, imagining waking up to Kurapika every morning. Pure Heaven.
"I'd love to move in with you," I say.
"But?"
I open my eyes and brush my thumb across his lower lip. "But...I can't leave Mio on her own. She needs me. If I move out, she'll be homeless."
Kurapika crawls out of bed and puts his clothes back on. "Then have her move in with us. She can have the spare bedroom."
I lay on my side, supporting my head with my hand. "Really?"
He buttons his shirt. "Of course. Even though I have yet to meet her, she must be special if she means that much to you. I feel like we are already friends."
I jump out of Kurapika's bed and quickly get dressed. "I'll ask her right now!"
"While we're on the subject, why don't you both come to dinner with my friends? You've met Leorio, but not Gon, Killua, or Alluka. I'm sure they'd love to meet you."
I loop my belt around my pants. "Sounds great! What time?"
"How does seven sound?"
"Perfect!"
He kisses my neck. "Great. I'll text you the details."
I take the train home. I notice an old friend. He takes the empty seat next to me.
"Wow! Hey, (Y/N)! I ran into Mio yesterday and now you. How've you been? I heard you're dating a hunter. Good for you."
I smile. "Yeah. I think..." I shake my head. "No. I know I'm in love with him."
He rubs my back. "I'm glad. You deserve to be happy."
"Thanks, Jisung. I'm gonna tell him tonight."
He smiles. "Are you on your way home?"
I nod.
"Great. I'd love to spend time with you and Mio."
We both run up the stairs to my apartment. I open the door. Mio is sitting at the kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal.
"Don't spoil your appetite. Kurapika invited you to dinner later."
Jisung walks in behind me. Mio abandons her cereal and runs to him. He picks her up and spins her around.
"Why didn't it work out between you two?" I say.
They stare into each other's eyes. "School got in the way," she says.
"Well...I think you both should try again. You two are perfect for each other!"
I tell Mio about the dinner plans tonight.
She frowns. "I have class."
A disheartening feeling settles in my stomach. Why is she always canceling? The man I love wants to meet her. Hell...he offered her his spare bedroom.
"Oh. Maybe next time."
The three of us spend the rest of the day catching up. The sun starts to set.
I get up from the couch. "I guess I should get going." I turn to Jisung. "It was great seeing you again."
"Where's Mio?" Kurapika asks me while hanging up my jacket.
"She has class tonight."
"That's too bad. I was looking forward to meeting my new roommate."
All of Kurapika's friends are nice. Halfway through dinner, the room starts to spin around me. I clutch my chest, trying my best to breathe.
Kurapika places his hand on my back. "Are you feeling okay?"
I try my best to answer, but I can't catch my breath. I stand up and fall to the floor. Panic consumes me and I feel like I might die.
I don't know who, but someone picks me up and takes me outside to the balcony. The fresh cool air feels good against my skin. They place me on top of a lounge chair.
Voices. I hear too many voices inside my head. Some human and some not. They sound mean and I wish they would stop.
Someone sits next to me and places their hand on me. I sit up and slap them across the face.
Once my vision clears, I see Kurapika supporting his cheek with his hand. No. Did I just hurt him?
I get into the fetal position and...cry. I feel like scum. Mio was right. I had no business getting into a serious relationship.
I want to apologize, but I can't seem to find the right words to say.
Leorio grabs Kurapika. "(Y/N) is having a panic attack. He'll be fine. Just give him some space."
Kurapika frees himself from Leorio's grip. "No! I refuse to leave him. Please, Leorio. You're a doctor. Help him."
Leorio places his arms under my body and lifts me up. He takes me back inside and lays me on top of Kurapika's bed.
"All we can do is keep him safe," Leorio says.
I can tell Kurapika is scared. I don't want him to see me like this. I try my best to concentrate on my breathing. In through my nose and out through my mouth. I can do this...for him.
The voices...they just won't stop. I sit up in bed, holding my head with both hands. "Shut up! Just shut the fuck up!"
Kurapika and Leorio jump back. No...I wasn't talking to them. I notice Kurapika's tear-stained cheeks. I shut my eyes. I can no longer bear to see him in pain.
Darkness invites me when I open my eyes again. I take a deep breath and place my hand over my chest. My heart doesn't feel like it's going to burst out. The best part is...the voices are gone!
I turn around. I feel someone in bed with me.
"(Y/N), how are you feeling?"
"Kurapika?"
Kurapika wraps his arms around me. Instead of feeling smothered, I feel...loved.
"You didn't throw me in the streets?"
Kurapika turns on his bedside lamp. He runs his hand up and down the back of my head. "Why would I do that?"
I look away from him. "That's what people do when they can't handle me."
"Come here." Kurapika pulls me closer to him. "I don't ever plan on leaving you. Understand?"
I nod. "Sometimes I think I don't deserve you."
"You're wrong," Kurapika says. "Seeing you tonight reminded me that it's okay to feel. I've had panic attacks before."
I look back up at him. "You have?"
He kisses my forehead. "Yes."
Tears well up in the ducts of my eyes. "But...I hear voices. They sound demonic and I don't know how to make them stop."
Kurapika crawls on top of me. He presses his lips against my ear. "Close your eyes."
I obey.
"Whenever you hear those voices, remember mine. Terrible things are bound to happen; However, I want you to know...you are my favorite distraction. I love you, (Y/N)."
I open my eyes and stare into his. The tears that have formed in my eyes make their way down my cheeks. "Kurapika...I...I love you, too. I was going to tell you, but then everything went to hell."
I try to hold back the rest of my tears, but this feeling inside of my chest makes it difficult. I don't know what this feeling is exactly. I feel it mostly in my heart. It travels to my brain and I want to laugh and cry at the same time.
Kurapika grabs my wrists and places them above my head. His lips brush my earlobe and he leaves a trail of soft kisses down my neck. I lift my hips up in response.
"Kurapika..."
He takes some of my skin in between his teeth and sucks.
"(Y/N), I'm not going to have sex with you."
Disappointment floods my veins.
"I'm going to make love to you," he says.
My body trembles. He unbuttons my shirt, his eyes never leaving mine. He opens my shirt, kissing every inch of exposed skin. I lift my hips, helping him pull off my pants and underwear. His eyes look me up and down. They change from gray to scarlet.
He undresses himself, grabbing the bottle of lubricant from his bedside drawer. I spread my legs for him. My heart races as he prepares me.
I place my hands over my ears.
"(Y/N)? Is everything all right? I didn't hurt you, did I?"
"No...the voices...they're back."
Kurapika reaches for his phone. He pulls up his playlist.
"Maybe music will help," he says.
I put my hands back down. I close my eyes, allowing the music to enter my brain.
"Yeah. A little. Thank you."
The beautiful voice of Hikaru Utada plays in the background as we make love. Kurapika supports my head with his arm. He holds my hand, slowly thrusting in and out of me. His captivating scarlet eyes shimmer as he watches me writhe in pleasure.
"I'm honored to be yours. I adore you, (Y/N)."
His words send me over the edge. I wrap my legs around his waist, needing more of this hunter. I squeeze his hand. "Kurapika...don't stop. Don't ever stop."
He kisses my ear. "Never."
He grabs my legs and picks up the pace, hitting my sweet spot over and over again. My body convulses as I experience my first hands-free orgasm.
He throws his head back, exploding inside of me. I can only describe this as magic...experiencing this massive amount of pleasure at the same time as Kurapika.
He falls on top of me. We breathe heavily as we recover. He pulls out and lays next to me, taking me into his arms.
"(Y/N), if you have any nightmares tonight, remember...I'm right here. I'll protect you from the demons inside your head."
I wake up the next morning still in his arms. I smile. I have never slept this good in my life.
"Mio, listen to me. Kurapika wants me to move in with him, but I don't want to leave you alone. That's why he offered you his spare bedroom. Please. Accept his offer."
She bites her lip, lost in thought. "You two haven't even been together a year. Does he understand what he's getting himself into?"
I furrow my brow. "What are you saying? That I'm not capable of sharing my life with someone I love?"
"Of course not! I just want to make sure you two aren't rushing into things."
I place my hand on her arm. "We're not. Please. He's willing to provide you with free housing until you graduate."
She brings her knees to her chest. "Just give me one more semester to think about it."
Six months later
I walk inside my apartment and notice Mio and Jisung staring at the laptop.
"Am I interrupting a study session?"
"No," Mio says. "Come here. We need to show you something."
I take off my shoes and walk toward them. She turns her laptop so the screen is facing me.
"What's this?"
She points to the screen. "The man you want to marry is a murderer, (Y/N). Are you okay with that?"
I read the article in front of me.
I shrug my shoulders. "Yeah? You're reading old news. I know Kurapika killed a few members of the Phantom Troupe. They deserved it, did they not?"
She judges me with her eyes. "Regardless, he did it out of rage. You're not afraid he might get mad at you one day and take things too far?"
I tap my chin with my index finger. "If you want the truth, the thought never crossed my mind."
She slams the laptop shut and jumps off the stool. "Well it sure as hell crossed mine. I'm not going to sit here and watch my best friend get murdered because he's blinded by love!"
I walk backward until I hit the back of the couch. "Mio, what's gotten into you?"
Jisung stands up. "Listen, man. We're just trying to protect you."
Mio wipes her tears away with her sleeve. "(Y/N), you're like a big brother to me. Please...leave Kurapika.
Kurapika
I stare at my phone. You're never late. Not to mention the fact that you're not answering any of my phone calls.
A strange feeling forms in my gut. A feeling I can't ignore. I grab my keys and drive straight to your apartment.
I know you don't live alone, so I knock. The door creaks open. All of the lights are on, so I imagine someone has to be home. I take off my shoes and call out your name.
I've only been inside your apartment once. Your reasoning behind why we don't ever visit your place is because your roommate is always studying, and you don't want to disturb her.
I walk into your bedroom. "(Y/N)?"
You're not there. I turn around and stare at the door across from your room. The muffled sounds of the city below fill the otherwise quiet apartment.
I don't want to invade anyone's privacy, but I'm desperate to find you. I open the door to what must be Mio's bedroom.
It's...empty. I scratch my head as I walk in. No bed. No desk. Nothing other than a cardboard box sitting at the corner. I kneel in front of the box. My mouth falls open when I see its contents. I go through the stack of pictures and articles about me. A picture at the bottom catches my eye. I pick it up and fall into a sitting position. Where did you find a picture of my clan?
I turn to the sound of footsteps. I quickly place everything back in the box and leave the room.
"(Y/N)?" My heart pounds against my chest as I walk through the rest of your apartment. No sign of life anywhere. I stand in the middle of your living room. Your video game console sits on the floor. I tilt my head when I notice there is only one controller. Didn't you mention that both you and Mio enjoyed playing together?
I lift my right hand and summon my chains. I can use my dowsing chain to locate you.
"Looking for someone?"
I spin around. Relief washes over me. "(Y/N), thank Kami. I thought you were hurt."
You walk toward me, expressionless.
"Are you done playing hunter?" you say.
I stand still. "Excuse me?"
You circle around me. "I saw you snooping around my apartment." You stop in front of me. "Why are your chains out? Do you feel threatened by me, Kurapika? Or would you rather me call you...Chain User?"
I shut off my aura. "(Y/N), my angel. Why are you behaving this way?"
You close the gap between us. "Am I really your angel?"
I reach for your arm. "Of course."
You pull away. "Angels are dead, Kurapika. Do you want me to be dead?"
I grab your hand. "No, (Y/N). Angels are guardians." I bring your fingers to my lips. "You saved me."
"From what?"
I kiss your fingers. "From myself."
You wrap your arms around my shoulders, replacing your fingers with your lips.
Your kiss is an oxymoron. I taste both passion and hostility.
You break our kiss and press your forehead against mine. I kneel to the ground, pulling you on top of me. I need more of your kisses.
You leave my lips and kiss my neck. I gasp. Better than painkillers, your kiss has the power to erase the agony I put myself through.
I open my eyes when I no longer feel your kisses. My eyes widen.
"(Y/N), put the knife down. Let's talk about this."
I feel the sharp cold blade against my throat. You're on top of me, putting me at a disadvantage.
"No, Kurapika. You don't understand." Tears fall down your cheeks and drop from your chin. "They are making me do this."
You glance behind your shoulder. I follow your line of sight. "Who? Who is making you do this?"
You press the knife deeper into my skin. "Are you blind? Mio and Jisung. They are standing next to us."
Shit. I thought your hallucinations were all auditory. It never occurred to me that you might be experiencing visual hallucinations as well. I can easily conjure my chains and pull you off of me, but like a paralysis dream, I feel trapped. You are in control and I follow along.
"(Y/N), why do they want you to kill me?"
The tears are streaming down your cheeks now. "Because...you've killed people. And...you'll eventually kill me too."
"That's not true. My purpose is to keep you safe. I'd only kill to protect you."
You take your free hand and grab my hair, keeping my head in place. "I love you, Kurapika. I hope you'll forgive me."
I close my eyes, losing consciousness. Warmth surrounds me as I drown in my own pool of blood.
I see...darkness.
No. What happened to the light?
I keep walking until I see it, flickering in front of me. I smile. I'm finally home.
I look to my left then my right. Where is everybody?
"Kurapika?"
I spin around, tears welling in my eyes. "Mom!" I run to her. Last time I saw her, she was able to pick me up. Now it's me who is picking her up. "Mommy, I missed you so much!"
She runs her fingers through my hair. "My handsome boy, what are you doing here?"
I place her back on her feet. "What do you mean? Aren't you happy to see me?"
She rests her head on my chest. "Oh, Kurapika. Of course I am. It's just not your time yet."
(Y/N)
I scream until my lungs burn. I kiss Kurapika, my mouth filling with his blood.
"Mio, what did I just do?" My hands tremble as I grab a throw blanket and place it over Kurapika's wound. "Mio? Jisung?" Why aren't they talking to me? I glance back. They're...gone.
My front door swings open. Kurapika's tall friend storms in.
"Leorio? You're a doctor, right? Can you fix Kurapika?"
He stops dead in his tracks, eyes wide. "Kurapika!" He immediately gets to work.
I sit in the corner, chewing my knuckles.
I'm not a human being. I'm the monster you'll see in your nightmares.
One year later
I smile as I press send. I just finished one of my biggest projects. I run out of my room, looking for my new roommate.
"Ara! I finally finished!"
She combs her bangs back with her fingers and smiles at me. "It's about time. What did that take...two months?"
I wipe my brow. "Yeah. I can't wait to see the check I'll get for all my hard work!"
She kisses my cheek. "I'm happy for you, (Y/N). You deserve it. Especially after the year you just had."
I slip my shoes on. "I think I'm gonna go out to celebrate. Why don't you join me?"
She waves her hand in the air. "Nah. I have a paper due tomorrow."
I take the bus to the square. Like Ara mentioned before, this has been one hell of a year. I spent most of it in a psychiatric hospital. I know I'm not well, but I feel this new medication regimen is working for me. I still hear voices, but they are not as loud as before. One voice in particular stands out...a human man's voice, soft and soothing.
After Ara moved in with me, I told her I was once in love. She told me that was impossible and I probably envisioned it while I was in the hospital. I believe her. They gave me a hell of a lot of medications and they made me feel sleepy most of the time.
One of the doctors asked me why I did it. Why did I try to murder someone? I laughed. I'm not and never was capable of taking someone's life. He told me I was lucky I didn't go to prison for attempted murder.
How am I supposed to put my trust in these people? All they do is tell me stories and shove medications down my throat. I swear, sometimes I just feel like an experiment.
I hop off the bus and stand in front of a restaurant. I stare at the building, wondering how many people are inside.
I take a deep breath, preparing myself to walk inside. I usually just stay home, but Ara insists I go out for some fresh air every once in a while.
"They are just people...like me. They are not going to judge me. I'm going to go in, order a meal, eat, pay, then leave."
Kurapika
"Excuse me." I bend down to pick up this stranger's phone. I stand up and hand it back to him. "I didn't mean to bump into you like that. Forgive me."
He gives me a dismissive wave. "Don't worry about it." He holds eye contact with me. "Do I know you? Your voice...it sounds familiar."
I lower my eyebrows. "I don't think so."
He smiles. "Yeah, you're too beautiful to forget."
I've never had anyone...uh...flirt with me before. Should I bow and thank him for the compliment?
I offer him my hand. "Thank you. I find you attractive as well."
He shakes my hand. "Wanna eat together?" He points to an empty table with his thumb.
"I...uh..." I stare at the register. "I'm supposed to pick up some food for my friends."
A look of disappointment crosses his face. "Oh well...maybe next time."
"But..." I return my attention to him. "They won't starve."
He brightens the restaurant with his smile. "Yeah?"
I smile back.
We walk to the empty table. He pulls out a chair for me. I appreciate the kind gesture.
"Thank you." I sit down and watch as he stumbles into his seat. I can't believe someone actually feels nervous around me. Sure, I've intimated many people before, but this is different. I find it endearing.
We don't speak a word until we order our meals. His eyes fall from my eyes to my neck. I instinctively cover the scar with my hand.
"What happened?"
I swallow hard. I can easily tell him a lie, but he tugs my heart with his eyes. "To be honest, I don't remember. After the accident, I developed amnesia. An entire year was erased from my memory."
His eyes soften. Does he actually care? "I'm sorry to hear that. On the bright side, it's probably best if you don't remember."
I smile. "You're probably right." I know we already shook hands, but I extend my arm to him anyway. "I'm Kurapika, by the way."
He shakes my hand. "It's nice to meet you, Kurapika." He smiles back at me. "You can call me...Mine."
