The sound of my sneakers hitting the pavement fills my ears. I slow down, catching my breath. A car drives by, splashing water all over my shirt.
I stop running. "Man. Could this day get any worse?"
I wring out my t-shirt and look around. Damn. How far did I run? I don't recognize any of these buildings. I keep walking until I reach a tall chain linked fence. I adjust my backpack and stick my foot into one of the links. I stop climbing once I reach the top. I slowly pull one leg over. I look down. Why did I look down? My heart rate increases and I pull my other leg over. I shut my eyes. I kick, trying to find another link to support my foot. Instead, I miss it.
My elbow is first to reach the concrete below.
"Ow...dammit!" I shout, supporting my arm that is now covered in blood.
I look up. The raindrops hit my face. I guess this day could get worse after all.
I pull my legs close to my chest. No. I refuse to cry.
Only girls cry.
I fold myself into a ball to protect myself from the rain. I feel arms wrap themselves around me and pick me up. The owner of these strong arms carry me until we're sheltered from the rain. I lift my head and comb my hair back with my fingers.
The blonde man assesses me with his eyes. "Are you hurt? Can you stand?"
I nod.
He gently places me on my feet. "Your elbow looks pretty bad."
I bring my arm close to my body. "Yeah. I guess." Luckily, I keep a first aid kit with me. I pull my backpack off my shoulders and start to rummage through its contents.
He tilts his head to the side. "Do you have a change of clothes in there as well? You'll catch a cold if you stay in those wet clothes."
A wave of heat rises to my cheeks. "Yes. I do."
"Great. Looks like we're the only ones here. Go ahead and change while we wait for the rain to clear up."
I bite my lip. I just want him to leave.
I sigh in relief when he turns away from me, giving me privacy.
"I'll keep a lookout for you," he says.
I walk behind the wall, making sure he can't see me. "Th...thank you."
I clean my wound and place a bandage over it.
I secure the Ace bandage I keep wrapped around my chest before changing my shirt. I know they aren't safe to wear, but they are all I can afford. When I'm fully dressed, I tap him on the shoulder.
He turns around. His eyes grow wide as he looks me up and down. I step back with my head down. I get the same look from kids at school. I turn so my back is facing him. My eyes sting so bad I can feel it inside my nose. He looked like a nice person, but I guess he's just like everybody else.
He rests his hand on my shoulder, and I immediately run away. The tears sneak down my cheeks as the rain hits my face.
I hear an extra pair of footsteps behind me. I take a glance over my shoulder and see him running toward me. I run faster. I run until I can't breathe.
"Hey. I didn't mean to scare you," he says, breathing heavily. "You're fast."
I've been told that before. I don't train on purpose. I'm just used to running away.
"Leave me alone." I get into a fighting stance.
He holds his hands up. "I'm not going to hurt you. Please...you can trust me."
I've heard those words before. I don't trust anyone. Especially after...
"What do you want from me?" I shout.
We make a circle on the pavement as the rain pours on us.
"I apologize. I just thought you could use some help."
I tighten my fists. "I don't need help from anyone."
"Are you sure?" He lowers his eyebrows. "You look young. Shouldn't you be at school?"
"That's none of your business."
He stops the circle and takes a few steps back. "You're right. However, I'm sorry...you're going to have to come with me."
I lean forward, making sure I heard him correctly. "Wait...what? I don't need to go anywhere with you."
He crosses his arms. "Sorry to admit this, but...I'm a hunter. Therefore, I wouldn't be doing my job if I contributed to the delinquency of a minor."
My mouth falls open. "Uh...you're a hunter? No way. Prove it."
He pulls his wallet out of his pocket and flashes me his hunter's license.
I shrug my shoulders. "So. Just pretend you didn't see me. I won't tell."
He shakes his head. Before I have the chance to make a run for it, his arms are already wrapped around me.
"Let...me...go!" I'm strong too. I can free myself. Except...he's really strong.
"Stop fighting me," he says, tightening his grip.
I fill my lungs with air. Just when I'm about to yell, he covers my mouth with his right hand. I bite. Gross. His hand tastes like metal.
"Dammit!" he shouts, squeezing the blood from his hand as if I have rabies. "You're a tough one, aren't you? Fight all you want. You're still coming with me."
He straps me into the front seat of his car. I hang my head as he walks to the driver's side. I don't want to be anywhere near him.
He presses the ignition button. I feel his eyes on me. "So much for the dry clothes. I don't suppose you have more with you...do you?"
I pull at the hem of my wet shirt. "No. I'm fine." I force myself to look at him. "Uh...why did you make that face earlier after I changed?"
His eyes fall on my shirt. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you, but your shirt is covered in holes."
I watch as the raindrops fall on his car. "Oh." I guess my assumption was wrong.
My stomach growls.
"Hungry? Tell you what...allow me to purchase you some clothes and then I can get you something to eat."
I look back at him. "Why are you being nice to me? I thought you were going to send me to jail."
He lets out a laugh. "For trespassing?" He shakes his head. "I don't do that. Besides, like I already told you...I want to help."
I roll my eyes. "What makes you think I need help?"
He doesn't answer. Instead, he pulls out of the parking lot and drives. I pull one of my legs up, resting my foot on my thigh. I sigh as I close my eyes. I guess I can trust him. He's a hunter. I don't know much about them, but they don't go around hurting people. Right?
I hear him kill the engine. I open my eyes and take in my surroundings. Nausea hits me and I want to bury myself alive. "Why did you bring me here?"
A look of confusion crosses his face. "What do you mean? I told you I was going to buy you some clothes."
Deja vu. I swallow hard as terrible memories fill my brain.
I don't even look back when I hear the knock on my door. My dad walks into my bedroom, and takes a seat on my bed. I don't acknowledge him. I just continue to watch as the leaves fall from the trees outside my window.
He rests his hand on my shoulder. "Hey, princess."
I scowl, pushing his hand away. "How many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that?"
He frowns. "I'm sorry. Habit."
"Well...cut it out. You're pissing me off," I say through clenched teeth.
He stands up, extending his hand toward me. "You've been cooped up inside this room for the past three months. How about I take you shopping?"
"You know I hate shopping."
He takes a deep breath. "You could use some new clothes. That shirt you're always wearing has holes all over it."
I look down at my shirt. "So? Mom bought me this shirt. It's my favorite one."
He forces me to stand. "Let's just get you out of this house. I'm worried about you."
What a liar. If he was really worried, he wouldn't have left me alone in this room for months. I get it, he's mourning too. But...he has a son to look after. I haven't eaten and I've missed too many days of school to count. I guess the teachers feel sorry for me because I haven't heard from them.
I walk outside for the first time in months. The smell of the crisp air reminds me of my mom. Fall was her favorite season. She always had a freshly baked treat for me when I got home from school.
My dad drives me to a shopping plaza. He parks directly in front of a clothing store.
I stare at the store with my mouth open. "Uh...what are we doing here?"
He grabs his keys. "I told you. I want to buy you some new clothes."
I stare at him. "Are you serious? This store sells women's clothing."
He presses his forehead against the steering wheel. "When is this phase going to end?"
I raise an eyebrow. "What phase?"
He slams his fist on the console. "This 'I'm a boy' phase! You know that's what killed your mother."
I'm not a violent person, however, I've never wanted to punch someone so badly in my life. I kick the glove box in front of me. "Bastard! How dare you say that? She died in a car accident."
"Yeah. But why do you think she went out for a drive that day? It was because she needed to clear her head. You don't know how excited she was when she found out we were having a girl. Then out of nowhere you say you want to be a boy. You nearly gave her a heart attack."
I start to pant. "That's not true! Mom always supported me. It's you who didn't want to accept it." I open the car door and step out. Before taking off, I turn and look him straight in the eyes. "I wish it was you who died and not her." I slam the door and run the two miles back home.
I run upstairs to the bathroom. I open my drawer and grab my hair cutting kit. I cut my already short hair and shave it underneath. I don't even bother to make sure it's even. I run back to my room and fill my backpack with clothes.
Praying I don't run into my dad, I go back downstairs and leave the house. I run to my friend's apartment. He's a third-year at my school so his parents got him his own place. I pound on his door.
"Calm down!" Koudai shouts. He opens the door for me. "(Y/N)? Man, you look like shit. What the hell happened?"
An awkward silence fills the car. I think about escaping, but I know he'll try to come after me. I wish they would just burn this plaza down.
"I...I'm so sorry. Honestly," he says.
"Whatever. Just get me outta here."
He takes me to a noodle restaurant. The delicious smell of food cooking hits me in the face. My stomach growls louder.
"Order whatever you'd like," he says, motioning toward the register.
I order a large bowl of udon, a side of pork dumplings, and a boba tea.
We don't bother talking while we eat.
I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand and slump on the chair when I'm finished.
He uses a napkin to wipe the corner of his mouth. "Once again...I'm very sorry. I know better than to assume."
I run my hand through my hair. "It's...whatever. Uh...thanks for the meal." I sneeze.
His eyes widen. "Are you sick? I knew it!"
I sniffle. "I'm fine. Can we leave?"
The sun starts to set by the time we leave the restaurant. He doesn't bother to open the car door for me this time.
"Do you have a place to live?" he says.
I bite my fingernails. "Nope."
"How old are you?"
I glance at him. "Sixteen. You?"
"Twenty. What's your name?"
"(Y/N). Yours?"
"Kurapika. It's nice to meet you, (Y/N)."
"Yeah." I take another glance at him, wondering if I'll ever trust anyone again.
"Where do you sleep at night?" he says.
I shrug my shoulders. "Wherever. I had a best friend, but...things got weird between us."
He gives me a sympathetic look, making me feel uncomfortable. "I'm sorry to hear that."
I hide my eyes from him. "You sure like to apologize a lot. It's not a big deal."
My phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out and immediately decline when I notice it's my dad.
"You don't want to answer that?" Kurapika says. "I can give you some privacy if you'd like."
I stuff my phone back inside my pocket. "Don't worry about it." I can tell he's confused as hell. I smile. "I bet picking up a screwed up kid wasn't on your to-do list today."
"Trust me...my to-do lists never go as planned. Would you like to stay with me tonight?"
I watch as the rain gets harder. "Sure. It beats sleeping in the rain."
I cough on my way up to his apartment.
"You don't sound well. Take the first bath. I'll find you some pajamas," he offers me.
I stare at myself in the mirror as I wait for the tub to fill up. How did he know? Sure, I'm due for another haircut, but still. He's the first person to figure me out.
I turn off the faucet. I step back, staring at the water. I shut my eyes as I undress. This part makes me feel sick.
A futon is on the floor waiting for me when I get out of the bathroom.
Three months later...
I've been staying with Kurapika. He takes better care of me than my own father.
He interrupts my video game and hands me a box.
I pause my game and furrow my brow. "What's this?"
He sits next to me. "It's a laptop. If you want to continue to stay here, you have to finish school."
I push it away. "No. I told you...I'm never going back."
He smiles. "You don't have to. I found an online school for you."
My eyes widen. "Really?" I wrap my arms around his shoulders, burying my face into his thick blonde hair. "Thank you, Kurapika!" I pull away. "I still don't know why you're being so nice to me. Is it because you misgendered me when we first met?"
His cheeks turn red. He shakes his head. "No. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for that. However, I believe we crossed paths for a reason." He scratches the back of his head. "I know that sounds cliche."
"Not at all." I look into his eyes. "I never asked, but...how did you know?"
He looks down. "Your hands."
I look at my hands. I knew I hated them for a reason. I shrug away the thought and smile at Kurapika. "Don't worry about it. Also...it's cool having a hunter for a big brother."
He stares at me with his saucer eyes. "You consider me your big brother?"
My instincts tell me I can trust him. "Yeah. Is that okay?"
He tousles my hair. "Of course! You know, my childhood best friend would be about your age if he were alive today."
Questions fill my brain, but I wait until he's ready to talk. He looks to the side, most likely contemplating whether or not he should share his backstory with me.
He looks back at me and tells me everything.
I have to keep my jaw from falling. "You're a...Kurta?"
"The last one."
I shake my head. "No. I'm your brother now so that also makes me a Kurta." I know that sounds cheesy, but I don't care.
He supports his abdomen while he laughs. "I like that."
His laughter subsides and he gives me a serious look. "What about your parents? You still haven't told me what happened."
Shit. I was hoping to avoid this subject.
I tell him about the argument between my dad and me.
He raises his eyebrows. "You don't think you should call him to let him know you're safe?"
"Nah. He's probably happy I'm out of his life."
"No," Kurapika says. "I'm sure he's worried sick about you. Please. Call him. I'll be right here for support."
I make a fist while staring at my phone. "O...okay." I leave the phone on speaker while I call. My heart pounds against my chest as I wait for him to pick up."
"Hello?"
"Hey, dad. It's me! (Y/N). How are you?"
"Sorry. I don't know anyone with that name."
I glance at Kurapika. "Uh...your son."
"I don't have a son," my dad says. "I had a daughter, but I lost her a long time ago."
I take a deep breath. I have so much to say, but I decide to keep everything in. I'm good at that. Instead of ending the call, I pick up my phone and throw it across the living room. It shatters as it hits the wall. Hot tears well up in my eyes, but I don't allow them to fall.
Kurapika holds my arms.
I look at him. I feel like I'm swimming in the ocean with my eyes open. "I'm sorry about the mess. I'll clean it up."
He jolts back. "You don't need to apologize for anything."
I can't help but laugh. "I guess we're both orphans now."
He pulls my head against his chest. "I'm so sorry."
I grip his shirt. "Don't be. I hated the bastard."
Kurapika rubs my back. "He can't hurt you anymore. You have me now."
I push myself from his chest. "You know...I also had a best friend. He's a little younger than you."
"Right. You mentioned him before. What happened?"
I push Koudai aside as I walk inside his apartment. I throw off my shoes and explain what just happened.
He places his hand behind his head. "Damn. Sorry to hear that. You're welcome to stay here for as long as you want."
I smile at my best friend. Black unruly hair, deep brown eyes, and an adorable crooked grin, I used to have a crush on him. He's about a foot taller than me and has muscles that beg to be touched. Straight as an arrow, he has all the girls under his spell. All he has to do is enter a room and they'll have their panties scattered all over the floor in record time.
We became friends the day I got beaten down by a group of bullies in junior high. Since then, we've been inseparable. Even though he prefers sports over video games, we get along great. I'm kinda glad we never dated. We make better friends. Life isn't as scary when I have him around.
I place my backpack on the floor. "Thanks, Koudai. I knew I could count on you."
He places his hands on my shoulders. "Anytime. But if your dad comes looking for you, don't expect me to lie." He turns me around and pushes me toward the bathroom. "Now let's go fix that hair of yours."
A month later...
Koudai walks past me smelling like my favorite cologne. I can't help but look at his muscles through the V-neck shirt he's wearing. He grabs his jacket. "Going on a date, (Y/N). Don't stay up too late playing those games."
I smile. "Can't make any promises. Have fun on your date."
He goes into detail about his new girlfriend. I stare at him as if he's speaking a foreign language. I kinda feel bad. He probably wants a friend who he can talk to about this sex stuff.
He holds his hands out in front of his chest. "I just want to bury my face inside her D cups."
I laugh. "You're such a pervert, Koudai."
He flexes his muscles. "What can I say? I got all this testosterone running through my veins."
I roll my eyes. "No fair. You need to share some with me."
Later that night...
I lift my head off my pillow when I hear the door open. I sit up on the couch, rubbing my eyes. "Koudai? How did your date go?" I say, voice raspy.
I hear him throwing stuff around in the kitchen. I check the time. It's not even midnight yet. I stand up and walk in the dark until I see his silhouette.
"(Y/N)? Sorry if I woke you up."
I flip on the light above the stove. "It's fine. Everything okay?"
He rests his elbows on the counter, running his fingers through his hair. "She turned me down."
I jump back. "What? You?"
His eyes meet mine. "Yeah. Bitch said she's saving herself for marriage."
I take a deep breath. I wish I knew what I could say to make him feel better. "Oh. Damn. I'm sorry."
He pushes himself off the counter. "Whatever. If she didn't want to have sex with me, then why did she wear a tight mini skirt?"
I shrug. "Couldn't tell ya. I don't know why girls act the way they do."
He throws his arms down. "I mean...she sat on my lap and made out with me. She freaked out the moment I pushed her skirt up."
I open my mouth, but no words come out.
He smiles at me. "Sorry. I'm just frustrated."
I smile back, relieved he sensed my confusion.
"Wanna finish that game? I need a distraction," he says.
"Yeah. Sure," I respond, surprised he wants to play a video game with me.
We beat the game in less than an hour. He throws the controller and pulls me toward him.
"Great job, buddy. I needed that." He stares at my face. His eyes move around as if he's studying my features.
I look away, feeling myself blush.
He laughs. "Don't be embarrassed. I know you want me."
At one point, I did. Not anymore. "Uh...I guess we should go to bed."
A sly smile crosses his face. "Already? It's still early."
I fake a yawn. "Yeah, but I'm starting to feel sleepy."
He plays with my hair. "Hey. Have you had your first kiss yet?"
I shake my head. "You'd be the first to know. Why?"
He stares at my lips. "Wanna practice?"
I pull myself off of him. "Uh...you're not gay."
He pins me to the floor. My heart races. "I know. But c'mon. We both know what you have underneath those clothes."
"Have you been drinking?" I ask, even though I don't smell any alcohol on him.
He doesn't answer. Instead, he presses his lips against mine. I try to push him off of me, but it's no use. He's too strong.
He forces my lips open with his tongue. I move my head back and forth in an attempt to stop him, but he holds my head in place. I used to fantasize about this. Now it just feels...weird. His tongue glides over mine. I give in and kiss him back.
I've never been kissed before, but I can tell he's good at this. He pulls away and stares into my eyes. I smile. "That was...nice."
"I'm not finished with you yet," he says, voice deep.
We kiss again.
And again.
His hands move down to my boxers. He pulls them down, exposing the part of my body I find distressing.
I push his hand away. "Koudai, that's enough."
He unzips his pants. "Shut the hell up, (Y/N)."
He forces himself inside of my front hole. He knocks the wind out of me as he tears me apart.
"Stop...please," I beg.
He doesn't. "Ahh...you're so fucking tight...I'm gonna..."
When he's finished, he pulls out and rolls to his side. I'm left feeling embarrassed, disgusted, and used.
He doesn't apologize. Instead, he falls asleep.
I grab my clothes and practically crawl to the bathroom. I sit on the toilet, wiping away the blood. I glance at the shower. As much as I desperately want one, I'm afraid of waking Koudai up.
I pack my bag and sneak out of his apartment. The cold air hits my face. I have no idea where to go. I zip up my jacket and think about spending the night at a local shelter. The thing is...the trains stopped running a long time ago and I don't have enough money for a cab.
I pass Koudai's car on my way out of the complex. As much as I would love to slash his tires, I remember I'm the strong one.
But...am I? I look up at the dark sky. I've lost my mom, dad, and now, my best friend. For the first time in my life, I feel like dying.
"Hey, mom. Are you ready to be reunited with your son?"
Kurapika breaths are uneven and rapid. I scoot back when I notice his eyes change to a deep crimson.
"Kurapika? Are you...okay?"
He doesn't make eye contact with me. "(Y/N), I want you to listen closely. First, I'm going to force your father to sign over his rights to me. Second, I'm going to teach that bastard you once called your best friend a lesson. Where is he serving his time?"
I watch him in confusion. "Like...prison?"
His eyes finally meet mine. "Yes."
"I...uh...never pressed charges. He's not in prison."
Kurapika jolts up. I fill my lungs with air to compensate for my rapid heart rate.
Kurapika
I can tell you're afraid. I try my best to calm my voice.
"Let me get this straight...that bastard is out there living his life while you're here trying to put the pieces of your broken heart back together?"
I guess I didn't do a good job at keeping my voice down. You stiffen then nod.
All I can do is shake my head in disbelief. I walk to the foyer and grab my keys. "What's his last name?"
"Takenaka," you whisper. Your lips tremble. "What are you going to do?"
I slip on my shoes. "I told you. I'm going to teach him a lesson."
You run to me and grab my collar. "Kurapika, please. Just let it go."
My heart fills with fury. I push you away. "Let it go? You expect me to just...let it go?"
Your eyes move rapidly.
I look away. "(Y/N), you are my responsibility now. You called me your older brother. I will not take that lightly. Your problems are mine and I will do everything in my power to make them go away."
I turn around and walk out the door.
It takes me less than a minute to find out where Takenaka resides. I speed all the way to his apartment complex.
I ring the doorbell and wait patiently for him to answer.
I cross my arms and look around. Luckily, I seem to be the only one out here.
"Can I help you?"
I turn my head to face him. "Tan..." I'm the older one so there's no need to be formal. "Koudai?"
He eyes me suspiciously. "Look...if you're here because I fucked your girlfriend, I'm sorry. I can't help that they all want me."
I clench my jaw and summon my aura. "Scumbag. No, that's not what brings me here. I'm afraid you did something much worse."
He slips out of his indoor shoes and puts on a pair of sneakers. He stomps toward me. "Look...are you here for a fight? If so, let's get this over with. I have a date in less than an hour."
"(Y/N) (L/N). Does that name sound familiar to you?"
His eyes widen. "Wait. You know (Y/N)? How is he?"
I lean my foot up against the railing. "Now you care? After all this time?"
"Who the hell are you anyway?" he shouts.
"His older brother."
He points a finger in my face. "Fucking liar. (Y/N) doesn't have any siblings." He turns around and starts walking back inside his apartment.
"How was he?" It takes every ounce of strength to hold myself back. "You know...the night you took advantage of him?"
I can tell I hit a nerve. He slowly turns back to face me. "Dude, I don't know what he told you, but I didn't do anything wrong."
I allow my dowsing chain to fall from my ring finger. "We shall see." I extend my hand until the chain is in front of him. "Did you rape (Y/N)?"
He looks to his left then his right. "Can you stop saying that?"
"Answer me!" I yell.
"No! I didn't!"
The ball at the end of my chain begins to move. "Thought so." My judgment chain falls from my little finger. "I'm going to give you a condition. Break it, and you'll die."
He holds his hands up and walks backward, tripping over nothing. "Look, man. I'm sorry. It was late and I had a bad night."
The more he talks, the more I want to rip his throat out.
I pull my arm back and throw my judgment chain. It inserts itself inside Koudai's chest. His body jerks then stops. He moves his eyes up to meet mine.
"Here is my condition," I say. I feel my throat rise and fall as I swallow. "You'll never have sex again. If you even think about it, the chain I just inserted in your chest will crush your heart."
"Wait...what? You're not serious, are you?"
"Try me."
I walk away. He wails pitifully like the coward he is.
An attractive woman reads the numbers on each of the doors. She smiles when she notices me.
"Hey! Do you know where Koudai lives? I wrote down his apartment number, but I can't seem to find it," she says, looking through her purse.
I smile, pointing to his body.
She looks at him then back at me, confusion evident on her face.
"Have a pleasant evening," I say.
Less than forty-eight hours later...
Koudai dies. I know this because it was me who placed the Nen condition on him.
I find you outside staring at nothing. I open the sliding door.
"Hey."
You look over your shoulder at me. "Hey."
I take a seat on one of the lounge chairs. "I have something to tell you."
You turn your body, giving me your full attention. "Go ahead."
"I just got a call from my lawyer." I smile. "I'm officially your guardian."
You run in my arms. "That fast? Wow! Being a hunter sure has benefits."
I stroke the back of your head. "Koudai is dead."
You take a fistful of fabric from my shirt in your hand. "I told you not to make a big deal about it."
I cup your face with my hands, forcing you to look at me. "Nobody hurts the people I love and gets away with it. Nobody."
