A few years ago, you gave Kurapika information on where to find a pair of scarlet eyes.
"Who are you? How do you know about the scarlet eyes?"
"Just trust me." you answer.
He was able to retrieve them. He has been grateful to you ever since.
You both have been connected by the red string of fate. Kurapika is well aware of this; however, he is too focused on finding the remaining scarlet eyes. You both briefly get involved in a romantic relationship. That quickly ends as soon as you realize that you are the only one putting in any effort.
The relationship was good when he was actually around. Your first kiss was unforgettable.
You both were sharing a piece of chocolate lava cake at a local bakery. It started to rain on your walk back home. He stopped to purchase an umbrella.
"We aren't far from your apartment. I think we'll be okay." you say.
"No. I don't want our date to end."
He holds the umbrella while the both of you take a walk around the park.
"We have the park to ourselves." you tell him.
"Yes." he replies as he grabs your hand.
Kurapika stops walking. He throws down the umbrella and pulls you close to him. His lips touch yours. Your eyes widen in surprise before you close them. Your lips part. You can taste the chocolate on his tongue. Drops of rain fall on the two of you as you share a passionate kiss. He breaks away and smiles at you.
"I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself." he says.
"That's alright. You have permission to kiss me whenever you want."
You are sad when you end the relationship. You care deeply about him, but you want more.
You both are still close. He even invites you to move in with him when he finds out you were hired to work in the Nostrade mansion.
"Are you sure?" you ask.
"Of course. I have an extra bedroom." he answers.
Kurapika is the leader of the Nostrade organization. When he isn't working, he is searching for the scarlet eyes. He works nonstop. You are always there to remind him when he needs to take a break.
"Kurapika, you haven't slept in two days. Please. Go home and get some sleep." you say to Kurapika as you stare into his tired eyes.
"Thank you, (Y/N). I don't know why, but when I hear it from you, I want to listen." Kurapika says to you with a smile.
You walk down the stairs of the massive mansion behind Kurapika. As soon as you both step into the foyer, Neon comes running over to Kurapika.
"Kurapika! You're not busy, right?" she asks.
"Not really. Do you need my assistance?"
"Yes! I need you to take me to the mall right away!"
You scowl at Neon.
How dare she ask Kurapika to take her to the mall? Can't she see how tired he is? Why doesn't she ask another bodyguard to take her?
"Uh...sure," he answers.
"Yay! You're the best, Kurapika!"
You go to your shared apartment to wait for him. While you are there, you create a warm and cozy ambience for him. You want him to do nothing but rest when he gets home.
It is past midnight. You hear Neon's laugh in the hallway of the apartment building. You peek out. Your heart sinks to your stomach when you see Neon holding Kurapika's arm.
You immediately walk out to greet Kurapika. Neon greets you, but you ignore her.
"Hello, Kurapika." you say as you take Kurapika's arm away from Neon."
"Hello, (Y/N)." says Kurapika.
"Why is she here?" you ask, referring to Neon.
"Oh...my shift hasn't ended."
"Your shift? I thought you were just taking her to the mall."
"That's correct. However, she said she felt lonely. I offered to keep her company."
"Here?"
"I'm sorry...do you mind? I promise we will keep our volume down to a minimum."
"No. I don't mind." you lie to Kurapika.
You badly want to shove Neon into the elevator. However, you know that this is Kurapika's apartment and it's ultimately his decision.
You look at Kurapika. He has dark circles around his eyes. It looks like he is about to pass out.
The three of you enter the apartment. Neon gasps as she runs around.
"It's so cozy here! I love all of the candles. Mmm...lavender." says Neon.
"Yes. (Y/N) always keeps the place nice." says Kurapika with a yawn. "Excuse me. I am feeling a little sleepy.
Of course you are. You've been up for over forty-eight hours. You need to sleep!
"Well, I'll leave you two alone. Good night, Kurapika." you say to him.
"Good night, (Y/N). I hope you have pleasant dreams." says Kurapika with another yawn.
You close the door to your room. You press your back against the door. Tears form in your eyes as you think about Kurapika.
Why am I feeling like this? Am I in love with Kurapika? No...I can't be!
You slide down the door until you are sitting on the floor. The hot tears are now streaming down your cheeks. You place your hand on your abdomen. It feels as if there is a black hollow pit inside of your stomach. That feeling along with the stabbing sensation in your heart is making it difficult for you to breathe.
I am in love with Kurapika.
You don't move from the floor. An hour passes and you decide to check on Kurapika. You stand up and slowly open the door. You hold your heart as you walk down the hall. You are afraid you'll catch Kurapika and Neon kissing or...no! There is no way Kurapika would involve himself with his employer.
You reach the end of the hallway. You slowly turn your head to where Kurapika and Neon are sitting. Kurapika is sitting on the couch, sleeping. Neon has her head on his chest. She is also sleeping. You stare at them. Seconds later, you notice Kurapika is resting his hand on the small of Neon's back. You quickly turn around and run back to your room. You jump into your bed, squeeze your pillow, and cry yourself to sleep.
You wake up to the sunlight coming in through your window. You immediately think about Kurapika. The hollow pit in your stomach reminds you that he belongs to someone else.
After washing up, you walk to the living room. Kurapika is not there. You check his bedroom. He is not there either.
You slowly walk to the kitchen. Your stomach aches too much to eat anything solid so you decide to make a cup of tea. You sit down on the couch where Kurapika was sitting. There is an intense pain in your chest. You become short of breath so you quickly put down your tea. You hold your chest, but the pain worsens. It feels like there is something wrapped around your lungs. You stand up and begin to cough. You cough so hard that you can't breathe.
You cover your mouth. You feel relief as soon as you cough something up. You look at your hand. There are several bright red flower petals on it. They are covered in blood.
What's this?
You hear the sound of the doorknob turning. Kurapika walks in and takes his shoes off. He notices you.
"Good morning, (Y/N)."
You stare at the beautiful man standing in front of you. You look at him differently now that you know you are in love with him. The way his blonde hair is tousled, his tired eyes, his soft lips...you notice every little detail about Kurapika.
You hold your chest and attempt to greet him.
"Good morning, Kurapika." you finally say. Your voice is hoarse.
Kurapika gives you a concerned look.
"Is everything alright?" he asks while wiping the blood away from your mouth.
Your heart skips a beat as you feel his hand cup your cheek. He wipes the blood away with his thumb. His hands are rough yet gentle against your face. You take a deep breath. The strong smell of metal hits your nose. You close your eyes. You don't want this moment to end. You let out a soft moan.
"(Y/N)?"
You blush from embarrassment.
"Sorry...I didn't get much sleep last night." you answer.
"Same here. I think I am going to get some rest now that my shift is finally over."
You feel the pain in your chest again. You resist the urge to cough.
"You don't look well. Let's get you back to bed. I apologize for keeping you up late last night." he says to you.
You feel the petals rising from your lungs as you listen to his soft voice. He wraps his arm around you and you lose it. You run to your bathroom. You cough up more petals and blood.
What is going on?
Kurapika knocks on the door.
"Go away!" you shout.
You don't want Kurapika to see you like this. He continues to knock.
"Let me help you!" he shouts.
"Please. I just want to be left alone."
Thirty minutes pass. You press your ear against the door. Kurapika has finally left.
Your symptoms continue for the next month. You are afraid to see a doctor about it. One thing you have noticed is that your symptoms are worse when Kurapika is around. You try to distance yourself from him as much as you can, which worries him even more.
You read a book on the couch. Your lungs feel fine until Kurapika sits next to you.
"I heard about that book. Are you enjoying it so far?" he asks you.
You can't answer him. You swallow hard to keep the petals from rising. It's not working. You have the strong urge to cough. Kurapika places his hand on your thigh and gives you a look of concern. You cover your mouth as you run out of the apartment.
You step onto the floor to the lobby. You run to the bathroom to cough up the petals you have been holding in. Once you are finished, you walk outside. The fresh air and sunlight feels reviving.
There is a nice park not too far from the apartment. You sit down on one of the benches. You close your eyes as you take a deep breath.
"Hey, (Y/N)!" shouts a familiar voice.
You open your eyes. Leorio is standing in front of you.
"Hello, Leorio. How are you?"
"I'm doing great! It's nice to see you."
He's studying to be a doctor. Maybe he can tell me what's going on.
"Have a seat. We haven't talked in a while."
"Sounds nice." he says as he sits down next to you.
"How is med school?"
"Ugh...stressful." he answers while scratching his head.
"Hey, Leorio? I have a medical question for you."
"Shoot it at me."
You explain all of your symptoms to Leorio.
"Textbook symptoms of Hanahaki Disease."
"Huh?"
"Yep. So who do you have feelings for? Is it me?" Leorio asks with a smile.
"Uh...no. It's...it's Kurapika."
"Kurapika?" Leorio asks.
"Yes. Please...don't tell him."
"Damn. You two live together. Your disease is going to progress quickly if you don't tell him."
"Then I'll move out. It's my only choice. I don't want Kurapika to feel bad for me. Especially since he is happy with Neon."
"Neon? He is with Neon? He told me he would never get involved with an employer. Besides, I figured you two would eventually hook up."
"Well...we tried. However, his work got in the way." you answer as tears fill your eyes.
Leorio pulls you in for a hug.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/N). I wish there was more I could do."
You cry into Leorio's shoulder.
"As much as this flower hurts, it's nothing compared to the pain in my heart."
"You can get surgery to remove the flower. In fact, a few of my instructors perform the surgery."
"Why didn't you say that before?" you ask while pulling away from him.
"Well...most patients opt out because of the side effects."
"What side effects?"
"You'll lose your feelings for Kurapika. In fact, you'll lose all memories of him."
"What? No! I'd rather die than lose my memories of Kurapika!"
You quickly find another apartment far from Kurapika. He is confused as to why you are moving out so suddenly. You explain to him it is because you received a job offer that you can't refuse.
"Are you sure you have to move out?" he asks. He has been begging you to stay.
"Yes, Kurapika. I am sure."
Your symptoms improve slightly once you are away from Kurapika. You still cough up petals, but not as often.
Two months have passed. You are sitting on the couch, looking through pictures on your phone. The flower rises in your chest as soon as you come across your favorite picture of Kurapika. It was taken at his birthday party. He has a big smile on his face. That smile. That smile is capable of magic.
You throw your phone down while you run to the bathroom. You start to cough up more and more petals. The pain is unbearable. It feels as if someone stabbed you with a knife below your sternum. You almost choke as an entire flower makes its way up your chest. You stare at it. The beautiful cherry blossoms are covered in blood.
Leorio said the end is near when you start to cough up entire flowers.
Once the pain subsides, you sit on the cold tile floor. You hug your knees to your chest while thinking about Kurapika. That hollow pit in your stomach returns.
Your phone is ringing. You ignore it while you cry over Kurapika. It continues to ring. You slowly get up to see who is insisting that you pick up the phone. It's Leorio. You call him back. There is an unusual tone to his voice. It sounds like he has been crying.
"Leorio? What is it?"
"It's Kurapika."
"Kurapika?"
"Yes. He is in the intensive care unit." Leorio answers while sobbing.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"He came to my apartment after retrieving a set of scarlet eyes. He passed out as soon as I opened the door." Leorio starts to explain. He pauses to take a deep breath. "I know you probably don't want to see him due to your condition, but I thought you should know. He doesn't have much time left."
The phone falls from your hand as your body starts to tremble. You start to feel adrenaline run through your veins. You run out of the apartment and speed all the way to the hospital.
You find Kurapika's room. You stop to take a deep breath before entering. You sense the heavy feeling of sadness as soon as you enter. Leorio is sitting in a chair close to Kurapika's bed. Gon and Killua are sitting in the corner. They both have serious expressions on their faces. You swallow hard as you turn your head to look at Kurapika. He is connected to multiple IVs. There is a monitor over his bed. It is monitoring his heart rate, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. You walk closer to him. Your heart sinks when you see that he is on a ventilator.
Flowers are rising in your chest. You resist the urge to cough as you take Kurapika's hand. You sit down next to him.
"Kurapika!" you attempt to scream, but the flower is making it difficult for your voice to come out.
Leorio stands up and wraps his arms around you. You start to cough up entire flowers. They fall to the floor. Gon and Killua run to you.
"What's going on?" Gon asks, concerned.
You are able to speak now that some flowers have been coughed up.
"I'm dying." you answer.
Tears form in Gon and Killua's eyes.
"Please...don't feel sad for me. I'm going to die right next to the one I love. Kurapika." you explain to them.
The sound of your voice travels to Kurapika's ears. He slowly opens his eyes. The monitor starts to alarm. His heart rate has increased. Leorio stares at his best friend.
"He's fighting against the vent!" Leorio shouts while frantically assessing Kurapika.
A nurse and a respiratory therapist run into Kurapika's room. They extubate Kurapika. The nurse checks Kurapika's IV line. She is confused as to why Kurapika is alert considering the strong sedatives he has been receiving.
Kurapika starts to cough. He looks your way.
"(Y/N)? You came to see me?" he asks with a hoarse voice.
You get in the bed next to Kurapika. Flowers and blood are pouring out of your mouth and onto the white sheets. Kurapika's eyes widened. The nurse attempts to take you away from Kurapika in order to help you.
"Back off!" you shout to the nurse.
She jumps back, shocked by your reaction. She leaves the room.
You turn your attention back to Kurapika.
You take a deep breath.
"Kurapika...before I die...you have the right to know how I feel about you. I...I love you. I have for a long time now."
"You...you love me? Why didn't you tell me sooner?" he asks, shocked.
You are becoming more short of breath. It takes you a few seconds to answer Kurapika.
"I saw how happy you were with Neon. I didn't want to ruin your relationship."
"Neon? I was never in a relationship with Neon. She is my boss. Nothing more."
You smile after hearing that Kurapika was never Neon's boyfriend. You lay close to Kurapika. Your eyes slowly close.
Gon and Killua are standing at the foot of the bed. They are crying. Leorio gets close to you. He places two fingers over your carotid artery.
"Kurapika! Do you love (Y/N)? If so, you need to let her know. Now! Her pulse is weakening!" he shouts.
Kurapika turns his body so he is facing you. Your breathing slows down and becomes irregular. He grabs your hand.
"(Y/N)!" he shouts while panicking. "I love you! I love you more than anything! Please...open your eyes!"
You don't move. Tears are streaming down Kurapika's cheeks.
"Leorio...why isn't she waking up?" Kurapika asks.
"I...No longer feel a pulse." Leorio answers while hanging his head down.
"No! I refuse to believe she's dead. I need her. I need her more than I need air in my lungs." says Kurapika while sobbing.
Kurapika reaches down and softly presses his lips against yours. You slowly open your eyes. You smile as you stare into Kurapika's saddened eyes. His face instantly brightens. He squeezes you.
"I love you, (Y/N). I love you so much." says Kurapika.
You take a deep breath. You are able to breathe normally. The flower has vanished.
"I love you, too." you say as you wrap your arms around Kurapika.
Leorio, Gon, and Killua wipe away their tears. They smile as they watch you and Kurapika confess your love for each other.
The next day, Kurapika is discharged from the hospital. Leorio drives the two of you to Kurapika's apartment. Kurapika holds your hand the entire way back home.
Leorio parks in front of the apartment building to let the two of you out.
"Remember...the doctor said no strenuous activity!" Leorio shouts while driving away.
The two of you stand in the middle of the living room. Kurapika is facing you. He rests his hands on the small of your back. He looks into your sparkling eyes.
"(Y/N), I know we tried this in the past. You know...a romantic relationship. However, I admit I was a terrible boyfriend. Please...forgive me. Will you give me a second chance?" Kurapika asks you with hopeful eyes.
"Of course." you answer.
Kurapika pulls you in for a kiss. His lips are soft against yours. You part your lips. Your heart rate increases as you taste him. You wrap your arms around Kurapika as he intensifies the kiss. There is a new sensation running through your veins. It's almost electric. Waves crash as you both explore each other's mouths.
You both finally break away for air. Kurapika smiles at you.
"That was a lot better than our first kiss."
"You remember our first kiss?" you ask, surprised.
"Of course I do." he answers while cupping your face with his hands.
You both are silent for a few seconds. Kurapika starts to laugh.
"What's so funny?" you ask.
"I can't believe you thought I was dating Neon!" he answers.
"Well, I noticed the way she looked at you."
"That's just her personality."
Kurapika stares at you again once he stops laughing.
"(Y/N)? Will you move back in with me?"
You pretend to think about an answer.
"I guess that will be alright." you answer with a smile.
"Come here." says Kurapika as he squeezes you. You feel him breathing against your ear. "I have one more request."
"Yes?"
Kurapika brushes the hair away from your ear with his fingers.
"I'd like to share my bedroom with you." he answers while kissing your neck.
You can feel the goosebumps on your arms. You let out a soft moan as you imagine sleeping next to Kurapika.
"That sounds wonderful." you answer, almost moaning.
"Let's make sure it is to your liking." says Kurapika as he grabs your hand.
He leads you into his bedroom. You have never been inside Kurapika's bedroom before. He has a bookcase full of books in the corner. There is an upholstered chair in front of his window which looks out to the city below. He most likely does a lot of reading there. You focus your eyes on his beautifully made queen-sized bed. His comforter set is simple. His bedside table is clutter-free. A small lamp and a book sit on top of the table.
"I know it's not much. You are more than welcome to change it however you'd like." he says as he turns on the lamp.
"No...it's perfect."
"And the bed?"
You sit on top of his soft bed. You close your eyes and before you know it, Kurapika is on top of you. This hunter, this determined hunter, is who you have wanted for a long time now. He peels away the fabric that is covering your skin. He leaves a hot trail of kisses from below your ear to your collarbone. His hair hangs forward. It brushes against your cheek as he whispers in your ear.
"Is this your first time?" he asks.
"Yes."
"I promise to be gentle."
You regret closing your eyes. You place your hands on Kurapika's back. Where did his clothes go? You don't remember him undressing himself. It is a sight you wish you had seen.
Your delicate skin rubs against his muscular body. You feel safe as Kurapika wraps his strong arms around you, pulling you closer to him. You spread your legs, granting him access.
"I love you." he whispers.
You feel a sudden sharp pain. You let out a low cry in response. Kurapika stops. He looks at you with concerned eyes. You reach up to kiss him. You grip his shoulders as he gently strokes in
and out of you. The pain becomes more intense as he plunges himself deeper inside. Tears trickle down the sides of your eyes. The tears are not from the pain, but for the love you have for Kurapika.
A fews seconds later, the pain diminishes. It is replaced with an immeasurable amount of pleasure. You attempt to look at Kurapika, but all you can see is white. Clouds of rapture surround you as he picks up the pace.
You never knew love like this actually existed. Your heart belongs to Kurapika. And his heart belongs to you. Your brain suddenly shuts down. You experience a moment of pure euphoria.
You fall back onto the bed. Seconds later, Kurapika is breathing heavily close to your ear.
"I...I love you." he says, panting.
"I love you, too." you say, also panting.
Kurapika rolls himself off of you. He pulls you close to him. You rest your head on his chest. His respirations are fast and uneven. He massages your back with his fingertips. You close your eyes.
You have the most restful sleep of your life. You slowly open your eyes. The room is dark. You reach to feel for Kurapika. His side of the bed is empty. You jolt up. You wrap a sheet around your body as you get out of bed. You walk down the hallway. There is no sign of Kurapika.
You turn on the light in the kitchen. You check the time. It is four in the morning. There is a letter on the table. You sit down to read it.
My angel,
We both fell asleep so quickly last night that I didn't get the chance to tell you how you made me feel. I have never in my entire life experienced such bliss. I am thankful for the day you came into my life.
You are probably wondering where I am. Please don't be mad. However, I have received intel on another pair of my brethren's eyes. I must retrieve them. You know how important they are to me. I know what you are thinking. I have just been released from the hospital. Please understand that I now have a reason to come back safely. You have changed me. I want to take better care of myself. For you. The love of my life. My reason for breathing.
Until I return, I ask that you take care of yourself as well.
Love,
Kurapika

Love,
Kurapika
