I was about to open the door when I heard Victoria's voice from outside: "Arnold? The power's out, I'm afraid of the dark."
Arnold came out of the study: "What happened?"
"Sir, a hacker attacked the power system here, causing the blackout."
"Hacker?"
"Arnold, I'm scared. How could there be hackers?"
Arnold frowned: "Go investigate."
"Yes, sir."
I listened carefully to the sounds. The two bodyguards who had just entered should be the ones from the door—they were now sent by Arnold to investigate the cause of the power outage.
This meant there were no bodyguards at the door right now.
Then I heard Arnold say to Victoria: "I'll escort you back to your room first."
"Alright."
Footsteps departed.
Arnold and Victoria had left?
That meant there should be no one outside now. Although I couldn't be completely certain, I could only take the gamble.
I burst out of the room, and in that moment, someone called me in the darkness: "Mommy."
My whole body shook, suspecting I had misheard. I tentatively called out: "Rowan, Callum, Elodie?"
Three little ones holding flashlights ran quickly toward me.
"Mommy, we came to save you!"
Seeing them, I broke out in a cold sweat: "It's so dangerous here, how did you come?"
"We cut off the power to the entire floor, and then took the chance to draw everyone outside away. Mommy, hurry up and come with us!"
I couldn't believe they had actually run here like this.
It was too dangerous here. I didn't have time to ask how they managed it—we had to leave immediately.
"It's too dangerous here, quickly follow Mommy."
Just as I was about to take them away, a light suddenly shone directly from ahead.
Under the light, everything was exposed.
"Who's there?"
The three children and I instantly froze.
"Thud!"
"Thud!"
"Thud!"
The footsteps behind us grew closer, each step like it was stepping on my heart.
My legs were trembling.
I closed my eyes tightly.
It was over...
The footsteps stopped behind me.
"Miss, are you going out?"
I turned around and saw the hotel manager illuminated by the flashlight, probably here to handle the power outage.
"I'm very sorry, there's a problem with our power system. We've sent people for emergency repairs. Please watch your step if you're going out."
I forced an unnatural smile and nodded: "Mm, okay."
"We apologize for any inconvenience."
My body was still slightly trembling. After the manager left, before I could breathe a sigh of relief, another light shone from the other end of the corridor.
My heart jumped as I quickly grabbed the three children's clothes and pulled them back into the room.
Arnold walked over and greeted the manager.
The manager respectfully greeted: "Mr. Cavendish."
"When will power be restored?"
"Mr. Cavendish, please rest assured, it will be restored soon. We're truly sorry for the inconvenience."
Arnold found this blackout very strange.
They said it was a hacker attack, but the power outage only affected this floor—the target seemed specific.
He had already sent people to investigate, but there were no results yet.
Returning to the presidential suite, Arnold glanced at my room. The door was tightly closed, and he remembered I was afraid of the dark.
For some reason, he walked over and pushed open the door.
It was quiet inside. He swept his light around and saw no one.
Arnold's expression instantly darkened as he stepped inside.
He saw the scene before him and frowned: "What are you doing?"
He suddenly appeared behind me, startling me into trembling and freezing, forgetting to move.
Looking up to meet his gaze, my voice trembled as I asked with difficulty: "When... when did you come in?"
"What exactly are you doing?"
Arnold stared at my posture and repeated the question.
