Victoria sobbed quietly, but her eyes secretly drifted toward Arnold.
Looking at her fake appearance, I still gripped her wrist, my knuckles tightening.
Arnold remained silent, just pursing his lips with a dark expression.
"Arnold... it hurts."
Victoria tried to break free but failed, her tone full of grievance: "Paisley, let me go!"
Arnold reached out to press down on me: "Let go."
I looked back at him, my eyes showing no retreat: "I really saw it. She did it on purpose, Arnold. She was targeting the child."
His face darkened, a flash of struggle in his eyes as he said quietly: "She wouldn't."
"Then why did the kettle tip toward Elodie?" I stared at him, forcing him to face the facts.
After consideration, Arnold's deep voice said: "That was an accident."
My heart sank heavily.
I didn't know what I was expecting—maybe a clear judgment, maybe at least basic trust.
But what I saw was him defending Victoria.
"Let go." His tone carried some impatience.
I released Victoria's hand.
She seemed to be the one who was injured, immediately crouching down and crying breathlessly.
I stood there, staring at Arnold's face in long silence.
With this brain of his, he still wanted to bring children back to the Cavendish house?
Victoria could harm a child who had nothing to do with him. If she knew Elodie was mine and Arnold's child, wouldn't she just poison her directly?
Did he really think this house was safe?
"Fine." I said coldly, "Since you don't believe me, let's check the surveillance."
At this moment, a servant came downstairs carrying Elodie. The little girl had red eyes and a red nose, her pant legs rolled up, revealing her chubby thighs marked with glaring red burns.
My heart felt like someone had squeezed it hard, the pain numbing.
She reached out, wanting a hug and to see my injury, but seeing Arnold nearby, she hesitated and pulled her little head back, just nestling obediently in the servant's arms.
Arnold also saw the injury on her leg, his expression suddenly becoming complex with a hint of heartache.
"Young master, the child's burn has been rinsed with cold water, but I think we should still go to the hospital to be safe," the servant said.
"Mm." He nodded, reaching out to take Elodie, then glanced at me. "You come too. We'll check the surveillance when we get back."
"Are you sure the surveillance will still be there when we return?" I meaningfully glanced at Victoria.
Victoria's expression obviously changed as she bit her lip without speaking.
Of course I knew what she was thinking. If the child wasn't the priority right now, I would have pulled up that video on the spot.
But my words were enough. When we returned, if that video disappeared, she'd be slapping her own face.
I didn't look at her again and followed Arnold out the door.
As soon as we left the Cavendish house, I caught sight of two familiar small figures quickly flashing by.
My eye twitched hard.
It was Rowan and Callum!
I knew those two would find their way here.
Arnold didn't notice anything and went straight to the car carrying Elodie. I deliberately walked slowly down the steps, making eye contact with the two children.
Leave quickly, don't get exposed.
But those two little fools completely missed my signals.
Callum scratched his head: "Is Mommy telling us to follow?"
Rowan nodded: "Probably."
"Then hurry up, we don't want to get lost!"
At the hospital, Arnold walked ahead carrying Elodie while I deliberately slowed my pace, maintaining a few steps' distance.
Elodie's little head rested on his shoulder, her small eyes secretly glancing at me. I looked at her too, taking advantage of the angle to quickly make a hand gesture.
Just as I finished, Arnold suddenly turned around.
"Paisley, you—"
