My heart jumped, my movements freezing as I immediately straightened up and acted nonchalant, asking calmly: "What's wrong?"
His gaze fell on me, his eyes showing a hint of suspicion: "What were you just doing?"
"Nothing." I feigned composure, my tone carrying righteous impatience: "You suddenly called me—is there something?"
Arnold narrowed his eyes as if trying to read something from my face.
I raised my eyebrows and met his gaze frankly.
He ultimately said nothing, just turned back coldly and continued walking forward.
We registered at the hospital and were called into the doctor's office.
Elodie squirmed down from Arnold's arms and said quietly: "Uncle, Elodie wants candy..."
"See the doctor first," Arnold said. "I'll buy some after the examination."
"But I want some now..." Elodie grinned and smiled at him coquettishly, looking like a little glutton.
Arnold looked at her with a somewhat helpless expression and glanced at me.
I said coolly: "You go buy her candy. I'll accompany her for the examination."
He hesitated for a moment, nodded, and left.
As soon as the door closed, Elodie and I almost simultaneously patted our chests and quietly sighed in relief.
While the doctor examined Elodie's injury, I borrowed a charger from the doctor, charged my phone, and immediately called Clara.
On the other end, she was at her company.
"Paisley, what's wrong? Did Arnold let you go?" She answered while organizing files, her tone quite calm.
She didn't know yet that the three children had snuck out.
I took a deep breath and told her everything from beginning to end.
She nearly jumped up in shock.
"They actually ran to New York by themselves?! What do we do now? I previously impersonated you to pick up Elodie, so in Arnold's eyes, I'm her mother... I'll have to go pick her up."
"Yes." I sighed. "There's no other way."
"Okay, I'll book a flight right away."
"I'll book the ticket for you. And thank you for being willing to help me."
I hung up the phone, finally feeling some relief from the weight on my shoulders.
As soon as Clara returned, Elodie could be taken back.
The doctor examined both of us. Fortunately, we had both rinsed with cold water in time, so it wasn't too serious. He prescribed some burn ointment.
Coming out of the examination room, I held Elodie's hand and said softly:
"Elodie, later you tell Arnold that you contacted Mommy with your phone watch, and Mommy is coming to pick you up, understand?"
"Mm-hmm." She nodded vigorously, her little face serious: "Mommy don't worry, Elodie understands."
Third Person Perspective
Meanwhile, Arnold went to the convenience store on the ground floor of the hospital to buy candy for Elodie.
As soon as he entered the store, he immediately attracted countless gazes—his tall, upright figure, handsome features, and cold, noble aura were completely out of place in this small convenience store, causing passersby to frequently look his way.
Arnold stood somewhat confused in front of the shelves, not knowing where the candy section was. Fortunately, a young female clerk approached proactively. As soon as he asked, she blushed and led him to the candy section with her head down.
The shelves were colorful, filled with various candies. Arnold stared at the rows of exquisitely packaged sweets, uncertain which kind Elodie would like, so he simply chose several popular-looking varieties and bought them all.
At the same time, Rowan and Callum jumped out of a taxi and stood at the hospital entrance, both little boys frowning with worry written all over their faces.
If Mommy and Elodie came to the hospital, someone must be injured.
They couldn't hesitate and rushed into the hospital.
Arnold had just finished paying and was leaving the store when he caught sight of two small figures quickly running past him. He instinctively turned to look—two boys who appeared to be four or five years old were running toward the hospital entrance.
He was startled, his gaze fixed on their backs—
Those two profiles... seemed somewhat familiar.
Arnold frowned slightly, his feet involuntarily following them.
"Missing children too much..." he mocked himself internally, actually starting to think random children he encountered looked like himself.
Inside the hospital, with the chaotic crowd, the two children's figures quickly disappeared. Arnold stood in place, somewhat lost.
Perhaps he really was being too sensitive.
He shook his head, stopped thinking about it, and turned to press the elevator button, preparing to return to the third-floor ward where Elodie and Paisley were.
"Ding—"
The elevator door just opened when Arnold stepped out, immediately encountering two children who were hurriedly trying to enter the elevator.
The two little boys, caught off guard, ran directly into his solid legs, then looked up.
And Arnold also looked down—
