Arnold signed the last document and looked up, "Birthday party?"
"Yes, today is Miss Hayes' birthday. Did you... forget?"
With recent business being so busy, he had indeed long forgotten about Victoria's birthday.
"Has everything been arranged according to the usual process?"
"Yes, everything is handled according to the old routine."
Long ago, he had promised Victoria that he would spend her birthday with her every year and set off fireworks to celebrate.
Gradually, this became an annual routine, and his subordinates were accustomed to executing it automatically.
For Arnold, this was just a promise, without much special meaning.
"Also, the paternity test results you requested will be ready tonight. I'll send someone to collect them."
Arnold nodded. Hearing the words "paternity test," his expression inevitably became more serious.
"Sir, are you still going? Miss Hayes has called several times already."
He glanced at his watch, stood up, grabbed his suit jacket, and walked out of the office.
Paisley's Perspective
I had just finished cooking dinner when I asked Clara to go upstairs and call the three children down to eat.
Soon after, she came downstairs with an odd expression, "Paisley, there's no one upstairs."
"No one? How is that possible?" I frowned, put down the spatula, and immediately went upstairs to check.
I looked through each room one by one—indeed, no sign of them.
The three children had been staying upstairs since coming home from school. Clara and I were busy in the kitchen and hadn't noticed when they came down. Now they were all gone.
"Oh no." My heart tightened. I rushed downstairs, my gaze falling on the invitation that had originally been casually thrown on the coffee table—now it was also missing.
I immediately realized that the three children must have secretly gone to Victoria's birthday party.
What good could those three get up to together? With their mischievous little heads together, they definitely weren't planning anything good.
The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became, "They must have gone to Victoria's birthday party. I need to find them immediately."
I grabbed my keys and rushed toward the door.
That kind of occasion would definitely have Arnold there. They were still so young—it was too dangerous for them to barge in recklessly.
"Wait!" Clara grabbed me, her voice urgent, "You're going like this?"
I looked down at myself. True, I had changed into clean loungewear after returning from the auction house. Though simple and fresh, it would be too casual for entering a banquet hall.
Not to mention, this was Victoria's party.
She would love nothing more than for me to appear at her birthday party and make a fool of myself. If I went dressed like this, wouldn't I be playing right into her hands?
"Go change clothes," Clara said.
"I'm going to find the children—what clothes am I changing!" I was so anxious I wanted to leave immediately.
"Paisley!" She blocked me, her eyes more determined than mine, "Rowan and the other two are so smart, they won't get into trouble. But if you go like this, you'll really become a laughingstock. If you want to successfully pull them out of that venue, you need to have some presence. I happen to have brought back a perfect dress for you. Go change into it quickly. Tonight you must dazzle everyone and clear your name."
I paused, "At someone else's birthday party, me going to 'dazzle everyone'—isn't that too much?"
"My god, Paisley!" She stared at me wide-eyed, as if frustrated by my lack of fighting spirit, "No wonder you get bullied by them! You're just too kind, too proper, you know that? Now you're still worried about being 'too much'—they're the ones who are too much, okay? Listen to me—the grievances you suffered five years ago must be settled tonight!"
She pulled me directly toward the bedroom. I protested "no" with my mouth, but my feet were still dragged step by step back by her.
Her words weren't without reason.
Victoria clearly wanted to see me make a fool of myself. If I rushed over like this, I'd be giving her the perfect opportunity.
Meanwhile, at the banquet hall, it was already 7:30.
The main doors slowly opened, and Arnold walked in, his well-tailored black suit making him appear tall and imposing with a powerful aura.
As soon as he appeared, all eyes in the venue turned toward him.
Many people couldn't help but whisper excitedly—
"It's Mr. Cavendish! Oh my god, he's here!"
"Mr. Cavendish is really so handsome... If I could marry him, I'd be willing to do anything."
"Don't be silly. Mr. Cavendish only has Miss Hayes in his heart and wouldn't look at anyone else."
"Victoria is really enviable. Mr. Cavendish holds a fireworks show for her birthday every year and has never missed one!"
At this moment, Victoria's face bore a gentle yet proud smile.
She had already put on her most beautiful dress, like a princess from a fairy tale, elegantly and composedly walking toward Arnold, then naturally linking her arm with his.
"Arnold, why are you only here now? I've been waiting for you for so long."
His voice was low, "Work was busy, got delayed a bit."
Victoria smiled sweetly, looking distressed, "You work so hard, yet still specially prepare all this for me... I'm really touched."
Her words were just heard by people around them, and immediately someone joined in the teasing:
"Oh my, you two are so sweet!"
"A perfect match made in heaven!"
Victoria coquettishly protested while secretly glancing at Arnold's expression.
What she loved most was everyone treating them as a couple—and Arnold was always too lazy to explain. This tacit acceptance made her even more eager to enjoy this "misunderstanding."
Just then, suddenly there was an exclamation from the crowd: "Who is that person? She's so beautiful... isn't she... isn't she Mrs. Cavendish?"
