Everyone looked toward the entrance.
Following their gazes, I stepped inside wearing a black mermaid gown that hugged my figure. The strapless design was simple and sleek—nothing particularly striking about the style, but wearing it, even I felt somehow different.
I usually didn't wear dark colors, yet this black dress made my skin appear even more radiant.
The fitted silhouette outlined every curve of my body. Even though I'd never paid much attention to dressing up, at this moment I knew the gasps around me weren't mere flattery.
Clara had also forced me to put on light makeup. Looking at the woman in the mirror with delicate features and a cool expression, I barely recognized myself.
I didn't look toward the crowd studying me—they were just blurry background to me. My mind was focused on one thing: where had those three children run off to?
"Paisley?" Victoria's voice sounded low, carrying surprise and restrained anger.
She had seen me.
I noticed her previously smug face instantly turned cold, with a flash of disbelief in her eyes.
Of course she recognized me.
I used to be beautiful, but I didn't dress up, so her constant refinement always visually overshadowed me.
But tonight—all eyes in the venue were on me. Including Arnold's.
Following instinct, I looked back and saw Arnold standing in the center of the crowd, his gaze fixed directly on me. Those usually calm eyes now held a hint of amazement I'd never seen before.
Victoria noticed.
She whipped her head around to look at him, but he didn't withdraw his gaze.
Victoria's face instantly froze.
She had wanted to see me embarrassed, but she hadn't expected me to become tonight's true center of attention.
I ignored them and continued searching the crowd for those three mischievous kids. After searching the entire party without finding them and getting no answer when I called, my heart sank to the bottom.
Then a voice came from behind me.
"Miss Reynolds."
I turned to see Neil standing behind me.
I raised an eyebrow slightly: "Is something wrong?"
He nodded slightly, his tone somewhat hesitant: "You... why are you here?"
I glanced casually toward Victoria and Arnold, then gave a cold laugh, "Didn't Victoria tell you? She specifically invited me, saying Arnold would surprise her tonight and insisted I, the ex-wife, be present to be publicly humiliated."
The words were too blunt—so blunt that Neil didn't know how to respond for a moment.
"Sir instructed that you shouldn't wander around. He'll need to speak with you later."
"Speak with me?" I curled my lips dismissively, "Isn't he busy accompanying his little lover? What does he want with me? Though I did hear he's planning to propose tonight?"
"Propose?" Neil's face clearly showed an "I had no idea" expression.
So this rumor was true. On my way in, almost everyone was discussing how tonight's fireworks show was prepared for Victoria's proposal.
I didn't know why—clearly I was already clear-headed enough—but hearing this news, my heart still felt like it was pricked by a needle.
But I quickly regained my composure, took a deep breath, lifted my skirt, and prepared to leave.
"Paisley." Victoria suddenly walked toward me.
I stopped and turned around.
She approached me, looking me up and down. Though her eyes were clearly full of disgust, she put on an affectionate facade, "Paisley, since you're here, come watch the fireworks together. Tonight's fireworks are something you've definitely never seen."
Mentioning the fireworks, her expression couldn't hide her smugness, especially in front of me.
I laughed coldly inside, "Is that so?"
"Yes." She actively linked her arm with mine, "Come quickly."
I wanted to pull away, but seeing her current high-and-mighty attitude, I decided not to let her have her way. Since she wanted to pretend intimacy, let's take it all the way.
I quickly formed a plan and went along with her pull.
Arnold stood there, and seeing me approach, his gaze locked onto me, unmoving.
"Arnold, I brought Paisley over." Victoria said with a smile.
I just raised an eyebrow slightly, too lazy to glance at him.
"Why are you here?" he asked, his voice low.
I looked up at the night sky, my tone indifferent, "What? Not welcome? I've never seen million-dollar fireworks before—can't I take a look? After all, no one ever set off fireworks for my birthday."
