A five-year-old child suddenly disappearing from school was definitely not a trivial matter. They had already called the police before notifying me.
The school checked the surveillance but found no abnormalities. They only saw Elodie telling the teacher she needed to use the restroom, then walking out, never to return. No one was seen leaving the school, but she simply couldn't be found.
Elodie had always been well-protected by me, never encountering danger, and no one dared to touch her. I never imagined that one day she would suddenly disappear like this.
"Paisley, don't worry. We've already called the police. The child will definitely be found," the teacher comforted me.
I stared at the teacher with red eyes, my voice trembling: "My child disappeared from your school. Shouldn't your school give me an explanation?"
The teacher was nearly in tears, frantically at a loss. I bit my lips and took a deep breath, knowing this wasn't the time to blame anyone.
Perhaps Elodie's disappearance wasn't so simple.
"Paisley, let me go get Rowan and Callum out first," Clara said.
I nodded: "Okay."
Clara rushed to the classroom. Fearing incidents, the school had already asked all parents to pick up their children.
At this time, Rowan and Callum were in the monitoring room, surrounded by several security guards and the principal.
The two children had serious expressions, their fingers dancing skillfully on the keyboard. One checked the teaching building surveillance, the other checked the school entrance surveillance.
Rowan's eyes tightened: "The surveillance has been altered."
Callum also turned and said: "Same here."
Obviously, someone had replaced a segment of footage, preventing the security from noticing anything unusual.
The entrance surveillance was the same.
During Elodie's disappearance timeframe, no vehicles entered or left through the entrance.
They had searched the entire school without finding her, so clearly she was no longer at school.
This was obviously a premeditated kidnapping.
"Rowan, Callum." Clara rushed in.
Seeing Clara, the two little ones finally broke down emotionally. Callum cried: "Auntie Clara, we didn't protect our sister..."
Clara's eyes also reddened as she patted Callum comfortingly: "Don't cry, the child will be fine. Rowan, can the surveillance be recovered?"
Rowan shook his head: "It's been altered, but I'll try to restore it. It'll take time though."
The police also arrived and began investigating.
Clara grasped my slightly trembling hand and pulled me aside: "Paisley, this is obviously kidnapping. Have you offended anyone?"
I shook my head: "No."
"Then... could it be Arnold?"
"Arnold? Would he take the child?"
"He's been investigating, hasn't he?"
I shook my head: "No way."
Arnold had already done a paternity test, determining that Elodie wasn't his daughter. He wouldn't use such despicable methods.
I closed my eyes, trying hard to think who it could be.
Not only kidnapping Elodie but also altering surveillance - this person must have considerable power and ruthless methods.
Someone I'd offended?
My heart suddenly sank.
Victoria?
She had once tried to scald Elodie with water.
In New York, besides her, who else would do such a thing?
"It's her!" I blurted out.
Clara's eyes widened: "Who?"
"Victoria!"
Clara frowned: "Did she discover that Elodie is your child?"
"I don't know." I bit my lips, my expression grave.
"Then quickly tell the police to arrest her!"
"No." I held Clara back, trying to steady my panicked emotions, saying softly: "It's useless. If she dared to do this, she must be well-prepared. Without evidence now, it's just speculation. Police investigation would only alert her."
"Then what do we do? Victoria is so vicious. If Elodie falls into her hands..."
Clara didn't dare continue thinking.
"No, Paisley, you must tell Arnold, tell him Elodie is his child, have him send people to search. With his power and influence, the search would be much faster."
I pressed my lips together, clenched my trembling hands, "I'll go make a call."
I walked aside, my heart racing, tremblingly dialing the number.
Soon, a man's low, husky, magnetic voice came through: "What's wrong?"
My voice choked, almost crying: "Elodie is missing. She's been kidnapped. Please... help me."
The other end was silent for a few seconds. Having known me for so many years, this was the first time he heard me use the word "please" - he must know the situation was urgent.
"Okay." He agreed briefly, without unnecessary words or asking for details. "Send me the location. I'll send people over first. Wait there."
Just then, Clara urgently called my name: "Paisley, come quickly!"
I hung up and rushed over.
"Rowan has recovered part of the surveillance," Clara told me.
We immediately gathered around the monitor.
What Rowan recovered was the school gate surveillance. The footage showed that within minutes after Elodie went out to use the restroom, a black car left the school.
After Elodie disappeared, only this car had left the school.
Clara pointed at the car in the footage: "It must be this car that took Elodie away."
