The police quickly connected the phone to professional equipment, but there was no response from the other end.
The phone was silent for a few seconds. I brought it close to my ear and heard the distant howling wind and the creaking sound of a car driving on bumpy roads.
Elodie must still be in the car now.
The fact that Elodie could call me meant the kidnappers couldn't see her or hear me talking.
So she must be in the car's trunk.
"Elodie, Elodie, be good, don't sleep. Mommy will come save you soon. Don't sleep, don't sleep..."
"Okay... Elodie, Elodie... not sleeping."
Her voice was so faint it was almost inaudible.
Obviously, she had used her last bit of strength to activate her watch and make this call.
Thinking of this, I was so frightened I nearly went mad, desperately trying to control myself.
I immediately turned and rushed to my car. The police tried to stop me, saying it was too dangerous.
But I had only one thought - save Elodie. No one could stop me.
I pressed the accelerator, made a beautiful turn, and the car instantly shot out of sight, disappearing into the darkness.
The police immediately got in their cars to follow.
When Arnold arrived, he only saw several police officers cordoning off the scene.
Arnold's face was grave, his dark eyes tightening when he saw the bloodstains inside the house.
He had originally thought this was just an ordinary kidnapping.
But the reality was far more serious than he had imagined.
He couldn't understand why anyone would kidnap Elodie.
Neil went to inquire about the situation from the nearby police and returned to tell Arnold, "Sir, the police say Elodie's condition is very bad, possibly..."
"Possibly what?"
Meeting Arnold's gaze, Neil was terrified.
"Possibly..." we need to prepare for the worst.
Neil bit his lip, suddenly not daring to say the rest.
Watching this scene, Arnold didn't need him to finish to understand.
A sharp pain suddenly shot through his heart.
How strange.
This was clearly a child who had nothing to do with him, yet hearing news that she might be killed, Arnold felt heartbroken.
"I got Elodie's location from the police."
Arnold immediately turned around, "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go."
At this moment, Elodie was lying in the trunk, able to hear the howling wind, and faintly, the sound of people arguing in front.
"You two idiots, actually making a move here - do you really not want to live?" It was a woman's sharp voice.
"We're just doing what the employer requested. This kid is valuable - the employer gave us a deposit of 500,000."
"Wanting money but not life, you've made her all injured. Can you get her out of this city? Don't end up dead before getting the money."
"Black Rose, what should we do now?"
"What to do? What else can we do? It's good I stopped you. I've already booked boat tickets. Go to the dock. Didn't the employer say they wanted her never to return? We'll wait until we're on the boat and leave here before doing anything."
"Okay."
Elodie moved her little arm. She had been hit on the forehead and was bleeding continuously. She felt dizzy now, her heavy eyelids constantly drooping.
But Elodie gritted her teeth, clenched her little fists, and persisted.
Because Mommy told her to wait, Mommy said she would come save her, and Mommy also said not to sleep...
Elodie had to be good and listen to Mommy.
Elodie wanted to talk to Mommy again, but her watch had run out of battery and shut down.
Elodie could only curl up her small body, remembering what Mommy said about covering wounds to stop blood loss when injured.
Elodie raised her little hand and pressed it against her forehead.
After a while, the car stopped.
Elodie heard someone walking toward her. She fearfully shrank her small body, and soon the trunk was opened, a beam of light hitting her face.
She heard the woman say again, "You little one are quite smart, knowing to press your own wound. Such a smart and pretty child should be sold for money. I'd hate to cripple her."
"Don't go soft."
"Just saying."
Elodie felt her little hand being grabbed and her body being dragged out.
The people were afraid that Elodie's condition would arouse suspicion if seen, so they stopped to bandage her wound and changed her clothes.
Then Elodie was carried to the front seat.
Elodie weakly opened her eyes. Though she was about to faint, her little hand still insisted on covering her forehead.
"Auntie... can you please not kill me?" Elodie said in a weak voice.
The woman holding her paused slightly and sneered, "That won't do. You're valuable. The employer gave orders, and we have no choice."
"Elodie also has money... Elodie's piggy bank has lots and lots of money. Elodie will give it all to Auntie... Auntie, please don't kill me. Without Elodie, Mommy and brothers will be very sad..."
The woman sneered again. This little girl was about to faint but her mind was still so clear, and she even had the heart to worry about others.
Really a brat who was sensible enough to make people soft-hearted.
"That won't do. We're afraid we'd have the life to earn your money but not the life to spend it."
Elodie gently closed her eyes, having no strength to speak anymore. She felt her body was cold, her whole person had a floating feeling, and the wound didn't seem to hurt as much.
This feeling made Elodie want to just sleep like this.
Hazily, Elodie seemed to hear Mommy singing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" beside her, then gently patting her, coaxing her to sleep.
So sleepy, so tired, wanted to sleep so much...
But Mommy had said she couldn't sleep now.
At this moment, there were two little people fighting in Elodie's consciousness. One little person said, sleep, sleep, it won't hurt if you sleep.
The other little person said, if you sleep, Elodie might never see Mommy again, and without Elodie, Mommy will be sad.
No good, no good.
Elodie didn't want Mommy to be sad.
At the last moment before falling asleep, Elodie tried hard to open her eyes.
Can't sleep.
Mommy said can't sleep.
Elodie promised Mommy, Elodie would be the most well-behaved baby...
