                    I couldn't.
I still couldn't expose myself.
I forced myself to hold back. Just when I was about to break down, Clara arrived.
"Sir, Elodie's mother has arrived. She said she wants to accompany the child to the hospital first and will come thank you later."
Hearing this, my heart finally relaxed a little.
With someone playing "her mother," she wouldn't be alone or suspected.
"Thank you," I said softly, preparing to get up and leave, but Arnold grabbed my arm again.
"Why?" he asked in a low voice.
I looked back at him in confusion. "Why what?"
"You knew you couldn't swim, yet you still jumped down to save her?" His voice was cold as ice. "Paisley, you and that child... have no relationship at all."
My heart jolted violently.
He suspected.
He was beginning to suspect.
I looked at him without speaking.
But my palms were already white from my own grip.
Too many flaws.
Really too many.
All the way from England to now, I had left countless flaws. Each one had reasons and explanations that sounded reasonable, but I knew in my heart they were still flaws. Even the most elaborate lies couldn't hide those emotions that shouldn't exist - the way I looked at Elodie, my instinct to block the hot water, my impulse to jump into the sea.
That was the real me.
I knew he would notice sooner or later.
Arnold stared at me, his tone suppressed yet urgent: "Paisley, is Elodie our child from back then?"
My whole body stiffened.
The air around me seemed to be sucked out, making even breathing difficult.
He... finally asked directly.
After all these years, this was the first time he directly asked me this question.
"Paisley," his gaze was locked on my face, as if trying to read everything from my eyes. "Elodie is our child from back then, isn't she?"
My fingertips gripped the corner of my clothes tightly, my knuckles white.
His eyes were more serious than ever before.
He really wanted to know.
He cared about that child.
But suddenly a piercing bitterness rose in my heart - then where were you back then?
When I was seven months pregnant, standing at my mother's funeral with my belly, where were you? If you had appeared even once, even just for a glance, I wouldn't have given up hope.
But you didn't come.
You were celebrating Victoria's birthday, accompanying her to care for her mother, without even a word of concern.
You didn't care about me, much less the child in my belly.
And now? You're questioning me? You regret it? You want the child now?
I'm sorry, it's too late.
I looked up at him, my eyes growing cold inch by inch, finally speaking: "No, you're overthinking it. How could Elodie be our daughter?"
I forced a smile at the corner of my mouth: "First of all, you don't deserve to have such a lovely daughter."
I could see his expression change slightly.
Sure enough, he was still suspicious.
"The first part is a lie, the second part is sincere," he said coldly, as if seeing through me.
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm: "Arnold, didn't you already do a paternity test? You saw the results yourself - no blood relation."
The firm light in his eyes suddenly wavered.
Right, he had done one.
The paternity test said he wasn't Elodie's father.
But then...
How could he explain my attitude toward Elodie? My repeated desperate attempts to save her, the way I looked at her...
He looked at me suspiciously, but I continued: "I saved Elodie because of conscience and guilt. You saved her too, didn't you? And you have no relationship with her."
I paused, then changed direction: "Arnold, haven't you thought about... why Elodie was kidnapped?"
He narrowed his eyes, his tone low: "What are you trying to say?"
"She arrived in New York the same day as us, unfamiliar with the place, with no acquaintances besides us. She's just a child - what enemies could she have?"
He didn't speak, but his expression clearly changed.
I stated my judgment word by word: "The only person she's ever offended is just one - Victoria."
His brow furrowed tightly.
"It's her." I said without hesitation. "You know in your heart who I'm talking about."
"You're saying Elodie was kidnapped because she stood up for me at the old mansion and offended Victoria, so Victoria retaliated?"
