The scene kept replaying in my mind—the moment Elodie was thrown into the sea, my heart clenched into a knot. That suffocating feeling was like seawater flooding my lungs, making it hard for me to breathe even now.
"How is she? Where's Elodie?" I instinctively grabbed the arm of the person beside me.
It was Dominic.
"The doctor said she's not in life-threatening danger." He gave me a cold look. "Worry about yourself first. Getting so worked up over someone else's child?"
Though his words were harsh, I knew he was worried about me.
Looking down at my hand with the IV drip, I realized I was already in the hospital.
Elodie was saved... but I had fainted from dizziness.
But before I could feel relieved, I saw the person standing by the door—Arnold.
My heart sank heavily.
He... was here too?
Only then did I realize that all my panic and concern upon waking had been exposed to his eyes. Dominic's harsh words were also reminding me not to reveal too much.
"What are you doing here?" I forced myself to remain calm, asking coldly, "Haven't you scolded me enough?"
I wouldn't forget how decisive he was when he threw me into the sea.
My heart felt like it had been slashed with a knife—the pain still hadn't subsided.
If only I could be more ruthless, more powerful, I wouldn't have suffered so much because of him.
"Arnold."
A familiar but weak female voice came through.
I looked up to see Victoria leaning against the wall, walking step by step toward the room. As soon as she reached Arnold's side, she collapsed into his arms like she had no bones.
"I'm fine, just choked on some water." She leaned against him weakly, her tone gentle. "I was worried about you, and also about Paisley... so I wanted to come check."
"Paisley, are you okay?" She looked at me with apparent concern.
I forced a smile, my voice dry: "You already know the answer."
"You were underwater too long, you should rest more." As she spoke, she seemed to subtly remind me of those two "accidents" at the seaside.
I sneered inwardly. Her methods were so clumsy that even a blind person could see through them, yet Arnold believed her every time. Was he too trusting of her, or too distrustful of me?
Just then, Dominic's subordinate entered.
"Boss, we found something."
Dominic's tone was cool: "Speak."
"The boat those three men used belongs to the Hayes family's private fleet."
As soon as he finished speaking, he added loudly, "Speak louder—some people are blind and also hard of hearing."
I turned to look at Arnold. His face immediately darkened, his gaze slowly settling on Victoria.
A flash of panic crossed Victoria's face: "Wh... what?"
The subordinate confirmed loudly again: "The boat the three kidnappers used is indeed registered under the Hayes family name."
Victoria's face immediately went pale.
"What does that mean?" She quickly shook her head, playing dumb. "I don't understand."
I watched her performance with cold eyes, while Arnold's expression finally showed some wavering.
I had told him before that Victoria was behind Elodie's kidnapping. Of course he didn't believe it.
But now...
"Are you suspecting me?" Victoria grabbed Arnold's arm in panic. "Arnold, do you suspect I orchestrated all this? But why would I do such a thing? I have no grudge against that child—why would I harm her? It makes no sense!"
Tears streamed down her face, making her look like an innocent victim who'd been wrongfully accused.
"Arnold, you've known me for so many years. Have you ever seen me harm anyone? I've never hurt anyone, much less an innocent child who has nothing to do with me..."
