What? I turned to look at Dante, noticing his obvious impatience.
"Just release them. I don't have time for your bullshit."
Kael's beta leaned in again, voice trembling.
"Alpha, Silvermoon Pack rules the whole northern territories. They're the most powerful pack in the continent. We can't afford to cross them..."
Rage burned in Kael's eyes. His fists clenched tight, face twisted with fury and defeat.
But under his beta's urgent whispers, he finally relented. Through gritted teeth, he ordered my mentor's release.
In that moment, I truly understood what it meant to be outclassed.
My mentor emerged from the upstairs chambers. I rushed to meet him.
Thank the goddess—he looked perfectly fine, still the unshakeable man who'd raised me.
"Come on. Let's go home."
I took his arm, eager to leave this cursed place. But after a few steps, Kael called out behind me.
"Nyx... is there really no chance for us? Ever?"
I stopped. Turned around. Met his desperate gaze with cold certainty.
"Even if you were whole, you wouldn't deserve to stand beside me."
"Wait!"
Panic edged his voice. "For the three years we had together—please, heal me one last time?"
That brought back memories. I spread my hands, smiling as I explained.
"Forgot to mention—your legs could only be permanently healed with my moonsilver needles."
"First chance I had? You chose to propose to Isadora instead. Second chance? You forced me to waste it on her spirit fox."
"But moonsilver needles only work once. You made me choose the fox over you."
"Kael, you're going to spend the rest of your life in that wheelchair."
Despair crashed over him like a tidal wave.
His hands fell limp, body sagging into the chair.
Under the bright lights, his eyes went hollow. His lips trembled soundlessly.
"Time to go," my mentor said gently.
The three of us walked side by side through the grand hall, stepping out into the sunlit world beyond.
Soon after, Dante and I sat together in Willowmere's garden, moonlight casting silver shadows around us.
His gaze lingered on the scars around my wrist.
"Nyx, remember our first night watching the moon here? I said this hand had saved many lives."
I nodded, meeting his loving gaze with a soft smile.
"I have a confession," he said quietly. "You probably don't remember, but fifteen years ago, you saved a young boy deep in the Whispering Woods. He'd been bitten by a shadow viper and was dying."
"You used your magic to draw out the poison."
My eyes widened in recognition. "That was... you?"
"It was me." Dante rolled up his sleeve, showing me the faint scar on his forearm. "I searched for you for years. It took everything I had to convince your mentor to take me as a student—all so I could find you again."
Mountain wind stirred through the garden as he gently pulled me into his arms.
"I'm just grateful I wasn't too late."
As our silhouettes merged under the moonlight, I felt the last pieces of my broken heart finally heal.
