Kael was ready for me. He sat waiting in his wheelchair at the center of the grand hall.
He looked haggard, worn down—but when he saw me, hope blazed in his eyes.
"Nyx, I've been searching everywhere. Thank the Moon Goddess you're here." His voice was hoarse, desperate.
I kept my expression blank. "Where is my mentor?"
"He's safe, I promise. I just needed to see you again."
His gaze dropped to my hand. "Is your hand healing? I was so worried..."
I clenched my fist, painful memories flooding back.
Kael rolled his wheelchair forward. I immediately stepped back.
He looked shocked, then hurt. "Please don't fear me like this..."
"I admit it—everything was my fault. I shouldn't have locked you in those dungeons. Shouldn't have believed Isadora's lies."
"I investigated everything. She killed her own spirit fox to frame you. I'm sorry, I didn't know..."
"Didn't know?" I laughed coldly. "So you threw me in a dungeon without proof? Sorry doesn't fix my destroyed moonsilver needles. Doesn't undo the torture. Doesn't heal my ruined hand."
My words hit him like physical blows. He shook his head in anguish, patting his useless legs.
"Nyx, my legs are paralyzed again. Does that make you feel better?"
"Maybe seeing this will help..."
He pulled out a remote, pressing a button. A massive screen descended, showing live footage from the pack dungeons.
In the dim light, a figure huddled in the corner wearing rough prisoner's clothes.
It took me a moment to recognize Isadora.
Kael smiled slightly, voice hopeful. "See? I made sure she suffered everything you did."
I looked closer at the screen. Isadora's face was a network of angry red welts and scars, some cracked and bleeding. Her hair was matted and wild—she looked like a broken ghost.
This was the Moon Goddess's final retribution. Cruel and merciless, but entirely deserved.
Kael manipulated the camera to show her hands. They hung limp at her sides—her tendons severed just like mine had been.
"Satisfied?" He was still smiling. "Will you forgive me a little now?"
I stared at him coldly. "Your revenge means nothing to me. I'm only here for my mentor."
"Of course." Kael nodded eagerly. "But YOU have to stay."
He rushed to explain. "I don't mean any harm! I just want to talk—really talk. Stay for half an hour, and I'll send your mentor home safely."
"I'll personally escort him to the car. I swear!"
His desperate begging left me momentarily speechless.
Just as I was about to agree, a calm, steady voice came from behind me.
"If you want to talk, let's talk to me first."
