The elevator dinged as it reached the first floor, and we nearly collided with Olivia, who'd just come back from grabbing a package.
The second she stepped in, I dropped Noah's hand.
Holding hands in public? Fine.
But in front of Olivia? That was a whole other story. Something about dating her brother always made me feel weirdly self-conscious.
Luckily, Noah just shot me a quick glance before smoothly shifting the conversation to small talk with Olivia. I chimed in here and there, trying to act normal.
Then Olivia shoved Noah aside, grinning as she shoved her phone in my face. "You have to see this gossip—"
Noah cut in. "Hey, sis."
"What?" she snapped, annoyed at the interruption.
Noah tilted his head. "How'd you know I just spent nine bucks today?"
Olivia blinked. "What nine bucks?"
My stomach dropped. That little red booklet he'd "accidentally" dropped earlier flashed in my mind. I opened my mouth to stop him—
Too late.
Noah pulled out our marriage certificate, holding it up under the elevator lights like some kind of exhibit. Olivia's eyes locked onto it.
I buried my face in my hands.
"YOU TWO GOT MARRIED?!" Olivia's shriek could've shattered glass.
Ding.
The elevator doors slid open.
Standing right outside, arm in arm, were Noah's parents—clearly on their way out.
All five of us froze in a perfect, awkward tableau.
Finally, Noah's mom—sweet as ever—broke the silence. "...Who married who?"
An hour later, Noah's parents dragged him to my house to formally apologize.
First, they scolded him for acting without discussing it with anyone. Then Noah launched into this whole speech about his feelings, even listing his assets and offering to sign a prenup.
At one point, he swore that if he ever cheated, he'd walk away with nothing—oh, and spend the rest of his life impotent. (Pretty sure that last bit was a dig at Alexander.)
My parents hesitated, worried he was too young and impulsive. Olivia jumped in, calling him a "pure-hearted researcher."
In the end, my parents trusted the Xies' integrity—plus, they'd known Noah forever. And, well… we were already married.
So they gave their blessing and started planning the wedding.
I shut that down fast.
"Let's skip the big ceremony," I said. "I want a destination wedding."
It wasn't that I hated weddings now—I just wanted something different.
Noah shrugged. "Okay."
Later, I found out he'd traded six months as a lab assistant to his senior just to get the time off.
The morning we left was all blue skies and sunshine.
"The sunrise at our destination will be even better," Noah promised.
I dozed off in the passenger seat, only half-aware when he turned up the heat and tucked his coat around me.
Somewhere between sleep and waking, I thought I heard him whisper, "Will you regret this?"
I don't know if I will.
