I dragged myself home and gave my parents the bare bones of what happened before retreating to my apartment. I crashed hard and didn't surface until late the next morning.
When I finally checked my phone, Sophia's successful surgery was predictably blowing up on social media. I tapped the heart icon - genuinely glad for her, no sarcasm here.
I'd barely taken two bites of breakfast when my doorbell rang. Again. Of course it was Alexander. (My parents had bought me the apartment right above theirs, with Olivia and her brother next door - small world problems.)
The second Alexander hit that doorbell, Olivia's ears perked up like a meerkat's. Next thing I knew, muffled shouting echoed through the hallway.
I opened the door to find Alexander looking like a drowned rat - hair plastered to his forehead, clothes soaked. His anger visibly evaporated when he saw me, replaced by this strained smile. "Brought you breakfast," he said, holding up a bag of steamed buns.
"Did Sophia eat first?" I asked dryly.
"I messed up, okay?" His voice cracked. "The surgery's done. No more obstacles between us. Can we please move on?"
The earnestness would've been touching... if I hadn't seen him happily accept Sophia's kiss yesterday. What I'd once found charming now just reeked of desperation.
"You'll forgive me eventually," he continued, already stepping past me into my living room like he owned the place. "Just takes time and sincerity." He plopped the food on my coffee table. "Eat up before it gets cold."
I almost laughed. "Let me guess - you want to plan another wedding?"
The smug look on his face said it all: Oh good, she's coming around. Like I was some petulant child throwing a tantrum.
"Planning to invite the same guests from your Sophia wedding?" I added.
His smile vanished.
My turn to grin. "Alexander, newsflash - we're done. Broken up. Caput."
The shock on his face was priceless. Sure, he'd pursued me first, but he'd always held the reins in our relationship. He knew my tough exterior hid someone who sucked at love - and how much I'd compromised for him.
His grip tightened around my wrist. "I don't accept that. Stop being dramatic, Amelia. Just... stop being mad, okay?"
Olivia suddenly shoved between us, her face pale. She showed me her phone screen, voice deadly serious: "We need to go. Now. My brother's on the roof threatening to jump."
