Jaxon
Jaxon had never walked someone home before.
Not like this.
Not in the way that mattered.
But here he was, standing on Ava Carter's front porch, rain still dripping from his hair, watching her fidget with the sleeves of his hoodie—which, by the way, looked better on her than it ever did on him.
It should have felt awkward.
Instead, it felt... important.
Ava shifted, glancing at the door like she wasn't sure if she wanted to step inside yet.
Jaxon smirked. "What? Scared to say goodnight?"
She rolled her eyes. "You're ridiculous."
But there was something softer in her voice now. Something that hadn't been there before.
Jaxon tilted his head. "You okay?"
Ava exhaled, arms crossing over her chest, the sleeves of his hoodie bunching up around her hands. "I don't know."
Jaxon frowned. "What's wrong?"
Ava looked up at him, her green eyes guarded, but not as much as before. "And I don't know how to be this."
Jaxon studied her, then exhaled. "Ava."
She didn't look away.
"I'm not asking you to be anything," he said, his voice quieter now. "I just want you to let me be here."
Ava swallowed hard.
Then, before he could say anything else, before she could overthink it—
She reached out and grabbed his hand.
Jaxon blinked, caught off guard.
Not because it was some grand gesture.
But because Ava Carter didn't touch people.
She had kept him at a distance for so long, always one step away, always ready to disappear.
But now?
Now, she was here.
And she wasn't letting go.
Jaxon squeezed her fingers lightly, grounding her. "See?" he murmured. "Not so bad, right?"
Ava exhaled, her lips twitching. "I didn't say that."
Jaxon chuckled. "Yeah, but you're still holding my hand."
Ava huffed, finally pulling back, but there was no real fight behind it. "Go home, Reed."
Jaxon grinned. "You gonna text me?"
Ava scoffed. "Not a chance."
He smirked. "We'll see."
She shook her head, stepping toward the door.
But just before she disappeared inside—
She turned back.
And for the first time, she didn't look like she was trying to run.
She just looked at him.
And maybe, just maybe—
That was enough.
