While Kara was on the second floor of the beach house, I assumed she would change into dry clothes and come back down. That's when I heard the water running from a shower, and I thought she would clean herself up from all of the saltwater from the ocean.
The sand included, and probably take a shower; just from thinking of that, I wondered what her body looked like from beneath those...No.
I shook my head, removing the unnatural thought, "Stop, Micheal, you are better than that. Don't me be like that." I thought in an angered tone. I knew that what I was about to feel would be barbaric and closely inappropriate in every way if I was even close to thinking about her in such a way as that.
Besides, she probably thinks I'm hideous, but not to sound too blunt and negative about myself, even though I tended to do so, she didn't see me any more than just an alien, nothing more than an alien.
Returning from my thoughts, I decided to look around, but it would be nice to sit somewhere comfortable because I was standing there, causing my feet to ache from the strain I was trying to withstand.
I checked my back, hoping there wasn't any sand on me. Wearing my suit with only a thin layer underneath, I felt uncomfortable removing it.
So, with that, I walked over to the couch to see the tiny bit of the sun setting.
Watching it set, I walked over to the middle part of the humungous piece of furniture; I was amazed at where I was, being able to maneuver and sit on the edge of the mattress of the couch, and noticed how astounded by how beautiful it was here.
It reminded me of those movies where the characters live out in the ocean and the islands, with the stunning water depth and how freshly nurtured the islands were.
It was from Moana, a Disney 3D animated movie I saw for a typical reason.
And yet another one, called Lilo & Stitch, came out in 2002. It was a good movie as well.
After that, I checked my outside airtight pockets, hoping to find anything useful to help me figure out how to manage my current situation off the grid, away from the possible outside world that was looking for me.
I couldn't go anywhere but here, and I had to make it a wise choice. By any means necessary, I needed to stay here, hidden from those who wanted to take me.
I knew that I had just met Kara, but she seemed smart enough to know she would do anything to help me. She seemed to understand my situation, and I was grateful for that.
I returned to my pockets but could not retrieve anything helpful: a compass in case my electric instruments from the ship went out to help me guide me to where I needed to go and a watch to indicate the time. Shocking, the watch still showed the time and worked, showing it was 6:30 p.m.
"I wonder if time works here, the same way back home." I thought in a curious yet questionable tone.
Until I pulled out something small and noticed it was my iPod MP3 player. "I don't remember putting this in here," I thought, but ignoring that questionable thought, I checked the device to see if it had any juice.
I hoped it still worked, and I was thankful it turned on when I pressed the power button. I noticed I had quite a few songs, which I mean many.
There were a few bands in here that I forgot I liked. The casing from the music player indicated that I had it for quite some time.
I checked, using the controls on it, and saw that I also had Odesza, Avicii, Glitch Mob, and other human music artists on it.
Putting on a song would help with my mental state. I was in a somewhat different world, not knowing what to do next other than stay with Kara.
So, I fished in my other pockets, hoping I had a pair of wired earbuds. So I could plug them into the player and listen to the music from there.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any. There were zero in the outside pockets of my suit.
"Well, that just sucks," I muttered. I tilted my body back and landed on the couch's back cushions.
Taking a breath, I looked at my surroundings again and saw nothing exciting. However, something caught my eye: a door half a jar leading to what looked to be a separate room.
I knew snooping in a stranger's house was a bad habit and a rude way of being invited to someone's home, but something about the room I noticed drew me to it.
I hopped down from the couch and was able to walk over to the room, doubly checking that Kara was still taking her shower, to which she was still taking.
Knowing that could give me some time to check what was inside the room that I found so interesting, walking around the couch, I was able to make my way to the door, and with it still a smidge open, I was able to walk through only for the door to open for me to be able to open it and not let it creak, and stopped in my tracks to observe my surroundings it was a small yet spacious room, and what looked to be an office of some room, from the door had three giant square glass windows that viewed from where the beach house stood both in front of a desk and bot the left and right sides of the vast yet slightly small square room.
And to where it gazed upon and showed the edge of the beach.
Despite being dark outside, a small yet big enough light illuminated the room slightly. I could see what was across from me.
In front of me was a desktop, a desk with it, and a fancy grey-coated office chair. Black metallic pieces supported the cushions and the chair itself.
Still, the cushions and the armrest were a grey supported cushion for the person to sit on; by that, I meant Kara.
"This must be where she works." I thoughtfully presumed, walking toward the desk, which had a digital screen, there were set of three computer monitors and a tiny keyboard that was wired connectedly to the three screens and looked to the side to the left that was what looked to be a CPU computer box that was wired to the monitors as well and assumed this was the CPU the computer tower that laid on the floor next to the desk to where the desktop laid on top of.
But that was the only one that caught my attention. A tiny, standing picture frame was also on the desk.
It showed a picture of two anthro sharks, two female, one young Kara and one older, and were at the beach, in a laughing moment, looking at the one that I assumed was a younger version of Kara that didn't have any glasses that time, but to see the older one that looked to be her mother did.
I even noticed that the frames that the older anthro shark wore had similar round specs that hung from her snout.
But that didn't distract me when I looked at the picture; they looked...happy. "They loved each other." I thought, a slight smile on my face.
It did, though, confuse me whether she was still alive or if she had passed. Back at the beach, how Kara reacted when looking for them, assumed the loss of her glasses, and realized that there were her mother's glasses.
But I would ask her that question later, once she had slowly gained my trust.
As I crept closer to it, I looked at the unfinished documents that looked like roots and rows of code.
The two monitors, on the left and right sides, showed codes I couldn't understand.
It looked like gibberish to me, but that was when I assumed she was some programmer or software engineer of some kind; that was when I looked at the hardware of what she was using and saw it had a.
It was a fancy logo, and that's when it was said in English in all caps.
"Gen Tec," I muttered, leaning in the logo, which caused me to squint to look at how tiny and possibly unnoticeable it was.
"What's that?" I muttered, not realizing that I was whispering and talking to myself.
"Some kind of computer or Software company?" I asked in question.
"Actually..."
I stopped, freezing, until I turned to look at Kara. She was wearing what looked to be a loose blue t-shirt and a pair of loose dark grey gym pants.
She was cleaning the circle-framed glasses she wore under the bridge of her snout. She used the end of her shirt to clean the lenses, and when she looked from me to her lenses, I waited for her to finish.
I did notice from the dim lights above that she showed a slight reveal from the light, indicating she had just gotten out of the shower. Her light grey hair was also slightly damp from it.
She didn't seem upset or angry about me being here yet, but she was curious or surprised, but I couldn't tell. I wasn't very good at deciphering people's facial expressions.
Especially for someone even like Kara.
"...It's both," she said, her tone regular, chill, and casual as she put her glasses back on. She returned her gaze to me as she carefully was able to set the bridge of her glasses against her snout.
Kara started to walk toward me with a neutral look.
"I'm sorry if I'm snooping. I had no intention of being rude or intruding on your privacy," I said, raising my hands in surrender, a sign of guilt and innocence.
She smiled at me and raised her hand to wave me off, a gesture I knew indicated she was trying to cool me down and reassure me.
"Hey, it's okay. I don't think there's any harm done. I'm not frustrated. There's no reason to explain yourself."
"Are you sure?" I asked, hoping that I didn't make her any way tested by me.
She stopped between us and looked at me. Her glasses slightly slipped from her snout, revealing her eyes, which stared directly at me as if she had the power to stare into the very source of my soul.
She gave me a more stern and serious look. "Michael, I would let you know if you crossed a line and didn't. You have no reason to be worried if I'm mad, and I can let you know. I'm not. Not even one bit." Her tone returned to a caring and calm one, and her facial expression returned to what it was when I first met her.
With her fish-webbed index finger, she pushed the bridge of her glasses back into place, returning the lenses on her snout.
After silence, I took in her response, understanding what she had told me; that's when she broke the silence.
She initially sounded slightly awkward, but at least that was how she sounded when she spoke and turned her gaze to me.
"So... you're probably wondering what I do?" she asked, her tone hopeful.
"Hm? Oh yeah, I saw only bits and pieces of it that were showing on your monitors. Are you a software engineer?" I asked. I hope my possible assumption is correct.
She was surprised by my question, and her shark-like ears perked up. Her eyes also went slightly wide. I noticed this and explained it to her.
"Back in my world, we have a similar division that does that stuff," I explained.
She nodded to me, knowing she understood.
"Yes, I'm trying to develop new software for a new mobile device that is being developed for the company."
"GenTec," I said, finishing what I assumed was her company.
"Yes," she said knowingly. A small smile crept on her lips.
"Wait. I hope I'm not interfering with your work life, but doesn't your boss know you're here? Off the grid. What if they needed to contact you or something?" I asked in a worried tone.
As I said, she did not seem worried when I asked and only slightly laughed at my question, leaving me confused.
"What?" I asked.
Her teeth were exposed as she laughed heartily. She then calmed down and regained her focus on me.
Her laugh sounded...heartfelt.
"Heh, I'm sorry. Forgive me. I've never laughed like that for quite some time; heck, I've never laughed that hard in my life," she said with a genuine smile. After she finished, she had a genuine smile planted on her face.
Kara looked at me and said, "And to answer your question, you are not interfering with my work. Also, my boss does know where I am because..." She trailed off, her gaze slightly uncertain.
I was confused about why she trailed off, so I asked, hoping she could tell me.
"Because what?" I said, not understanding what she was trying to place for me to understand.
She glanced at me momentarily, and I wasn't sure if that was a glance of uncertainty in her light grey eyes or something else. But that was before she said, leaving me wide-eyed, "I am the boss...of GenTec." Her tone sounded proud, but she also had a hint of uncertainty in her voice.
"...Guilty as charged, heh...I guess,"
