I was dumbfounded that I was speaking to someone powerful, part of a high-end company similar to my world, like Apple, which happened to be a well-known computer company.
But then something occurred to me, and Kara seemed to notice and ask, "What is it?"
"Wait. If you are the boss of Gentec, are you, like, the boss?"
Kara looked at me specifically and said, "Technically, I'm the co-founder and CEO of Gentec."
After processing this, I could hint at something in her tone that made her seem happy or positive.
"Wait, if you are the co-founder founder, then who is the company's founder?"
Kara looked at me for a long while and then broke our gaze. She had an uncertain look on her face. Then suddenly, she asked, instantly changing the subject, "Are you...hungry?"
I noticed the subject I asked was personal, so I respected her wishes by dropping it. She couldn't answer when I asked who founded Gentec, so I responded to Kara's question.
"Uh, yeah, I could have some food right now," I said. My tone was simple and casual.
She gave me a soft, genuine, and sympathetic smile.
She gestured with her hand to follow her out of the office. When we were back in the living room area, she continued until she reached the kitchen.
She pointed to where I could sit, and that's when I did, watching her as she grabbed the supplies she needed to make whatever she was planning to make.
"um..."
She perked up, her ears slightly rose from the two earrings on each side of her ears. And turned to me while grabbing something from the refrigerator door.
Kara looked at me, giving me a curious look in her eyes.
"...Do you need any help?" I asked
She looked at me momentarily and smiled, the same one she was giving me, which confused me. "Why is she still smiling at me?" I thought, slightly concerned yet curious.
"...um no...I'm all good, but thank you for asking."
I nodded to her, and she returned to her work. She closed the door to the fridge and then focused on making something.
I noticed she also had a package of cheese and bread. At that moment, I recognized what I assumed was what she was planning to make.
"Are you making a grilled cheese?"
While she grabbed a pan from a cupboard next to the stovetop, I could see as she sat on the stove because I was sitting on the island table before me.
Across from it was Kara on the other side of the table, working on the stove, and she looked back at me with a slight surprise in her eyes.
"We have the same thing back in my world," I said, hoping my explanation would work for her to understand.
She looked at me for a moment and continued to work on the cooking process of the grilled cheese that I assumed she was making for me.
"What was it like there?"
I looked back at her for a moment before I was about to speak. The suit I was wearing was starting to make me feel uncomfortable.
Kara noticed this and spoke, "...I think we might need to give you a set of clothes, but I'm not sure mine would fit you." She said. Her tone was filled with uncertainty, and so did her expression. She glanced at me while holding a spatula.
I looked at her from my suit. Then I asked, "Do you have a spare set of clothes I could wear temporarily until I can get ones that fit me?" I asked, hoping Kara had at least something to help me with my suit.
I noticed she took a moment to think and watched as she grabbed a knife from a drawer next to the right side of her hip.
She held a container on the counter containing a toaster and a block of butter. With that, she opened the bread bag and pulled out a cutting board from where she got the pan.
She set the two slices of bread on the counter on top of the cutting board; Kara then scooped up the butter with the knife and spread it on both pieces.
Waiting for her response, she finalized by spreading the butter on the bread. She then grabbed the wrapped-up container of cheese, which thankfully was already sliced so that she could easily set it on the opposite sides of the two pieces of bread.
Once they were together, she put the sandwich on the pan, and at that very moment, it started to sizzle from the butter slowly.
Once that was sizzling, Kara turned to me with complete eye contact. "Sorry, I should have a set of old clothes in my bedroom closet. Once I'm done, I can go grab them for you," she said, her tone caring and reassuring, tone in her voice.
I nodded to her, understanding the plan for when she was done making me my food.
After a brief moment of awkwardness, she was just focused on making sure the grilled cheese didn't burn, but I did notice her looking at me slightly, assuming that she didn't know I saw her looking at me the way she was, but I was confused as to why she would be looking at me.
"Why is she looking at me like that?" I thought in a questionable tone.
But thinking that she was looking at me slightly without me noticing, I looked to see that her tail was slightly waving back in, the same way it did when Kara went upstairs to clean herself up.
Assuming my thoughts were about to escalate, I was surprised when Kara brought a plate before me and saw a well-cooked grilled cheese sandwich before me.
I looked at her and could see the intent expression on her face.
"This looks good. Thank you, Kara." My tone was full of gratitude and appreciation.
She seemed to notice this and smiled, her expression telling me she was happy to be grateful for her cooking, especially from someone like me, someone no one had ever seen.
I grabbed the sandwich with my two bare hands and waited a minute to find where I wanted to eat it. After a minute, I took one big bite, chewed all the flavors, and then started pouring them into my mouth.
Closing my eyes to savor the magnificent flavor of the sandwich.
"Mmm, Cheesy," I muttered, trying to make a joke and describe how good the grilled cheese was.
When I opened my eyes again, Kara was leaning her body against the edge of the island table, her elbows against the table. Her chest was slightly overflowing, and her hands supported her face as she leaned in and asked in a curious tone.
"Is it good?" she asked, but when I looked at her, I saw a strange yet noticeable expression on her face.
But I wasn't able to decipher what it was.
"Yes, It is good; thank you," I said, nodding to her. I was also surprised by how well she made it taste so good with only a few ingredients: butter, bread, and cheese.
She smiled, the expression on her face showing her toothy shark-like smile.
Her smile slightly took me back, but as I said before, she didn't seem in any way to want to harm me, and she was showing genuine appreciation for the kind gesture.
But what occurred to me the most was why she was willing to help me and assumed there was a catch.
"...Kara?"
"Hmm?"
"I was wanting to ask you something..." I said, slightly, trailing off in hopes she would understand what I would ask.
"Yes." her tone was slightly more eager than usual, and she seemed to lean in closer from where she was across the island table.
I wasn't exactly sure what she was doing, or planning for that matter, so I cut to the chase, getting to the question I wanted to ask.
"Why...why are you helping me?"
After I asked her that question, her expression slightly changed. She slightly backed up and then returned to her full height, looking down at me in silence. She looked hesitant to answer my question.
So I continued with the things that were the obvious facts to what she did, telling them as I used my fingers to count out the generous things she did.
"You saved me from the water, invited me to your house, and then you made me this delicious grilled cheese sandwich," I said, leaving her slightly speechless.
She looked at me the entire time as I noted the apparent things, and she averted her eyes from me only for a split second before taking a breath and returning her gaze to me.
"I...I wanted to help you because..." she trailed off, leaving me clueless about the answer.
"Because what?"
"Because you needed help, and that's what I plan to do, to help you get to where you need to go," she said.
But something about when she said that didn't seem like the whole truth, but he didn't want to pressure her or push in an area where she didn't seem comfortable talking about it, so he let that one slide as well.
"Thank you," I said, hoping that would let her know enough about how much that meant to me.
