On my wedding day, Preston's first love jumped from the ninety-ninth floor, killing herself and her unborn child.
Hearing this, he froze for just one second, then smiled and continued with the ceremony.
That night, he chartered a spacecraft, saying he wanted to take the whole family on a honeymoon to space.
Everyone was over the moon with excitement, and I was looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime trip too.
But the moment we entered space, he suddenly changed course and hurtled toward Earth at maximum speed.
"Sage Sinclair! If you hadn't insisted on marrying me, Marina and the baby would still be alive! I'm taking all of you down with them!"
The moment the spaceship exploded, I closed my eyes in despair.
When I opened them again, I was reborn on my wedding day...
"Preston, I'm entrusting Sage to you. Promise me you'll treat her right for the rest of your life."
Dad choked up as he placed my hand in Preston's palm.
Preston's lips pressed into a thin line, his face expressionless as he led me forward, completely ignoring Dad's heartfelt words.
A chill crept up my spine.
This was the real him.
Stone-faced throughout the entire wedding, yet the moment he heard about Marina's death, he suddenly smiled like he'd become a completely different person.
I yanked my hand away. "Marina's going to jump from the ninety-ninth floor. You can still save her if you leave now."
Preston froze, his eyes instantly turning ice-cold. "You better not be lying to me!"
With that, he bolted out without looking back.
I collapsed to the ground, cold sweat instantly soaking through my wedding dress.
Marina Delacroix was Preston's first love.
On graduation day, she vanished overseas without a word.
Preston immediately accepted the family's arranged marriage and began pursuing me relentlessly.
Seven-layer rainbow cakes, drone meteor showers, helicopter tours of the city skyline...
For three years, he pampered me like a fairy tale princess.
Until Marina returned after our engagement.
Preston became distant, coming home later and later each night.
When I suggested calling off the engagement, he just said casually:
"Sage, I'm over Marina. We're just catching up."
I believed him.
Big mistake.
He proved his love for Marina with a murder-suicide in space—love so twisted he'd destroy everything for it.
Living this life over again, all I wanted was my family's safety.
As for Preston?
I needed to stay far away from that psychotic lovesick maniac.
After seeing Preston run out of the hall, the scene erupted into chaos.
"The groom running away on his wedding day? Now that's something new."
"Must've been a shotgun wedding, and now he's having cold feet."
Preston's parents frantically tried to calm everyone down, claiming Preston just had an emergency.
Mom and Dad helped me up, their eyes full of concern.
I shook my head.
No explanation needed—they would always have my back.
Minutes later, Preston returned, breathing heavily.
His eyes were bloodshot, but his voice was eerily calm. "Sage, Marina's fine now. Let's continue with our wedding."
Without hesitation, I refused:
"Preston, I'm calling off our engagement. Go be with Marina."
I grabbed my parents' hands. "We're leaving."
But Preston's parents blocked our way.
"Sage Sinclair, Preston was only gone for a few minutes and you're already trying to call off the wedding in public? You want to make the Ashford family a laughingstock?"
"Walter, is this how you raised your daughter? Creating a scene like this?"
Dad's face darkened instantly.
I let out a cold laugh:
"The Sinclair family's business is none of the Ashfords' concern!"
"Besides, your son already has a kid with another woman, and you still want me to marry him and play stepmom? Dream on."
Preston's fists clenched, veins bulging. After a few tense seconds, he suddenly smiled.
"Sage's right. The wedding's off. Sorry about this. Let me drive you home."
That smile—identical to the one from my past life when Marina died.
Ice shot through my veins. I instinctively stepped back.
"No need."
Preston's expression darkened instantly.
My softhearted parents intervened: "Just let him drive us. Let's part on good terms."
Only then did he smile again, eagerly bringing the car around.
As we drove onto the cross-harbor bridge, my heart suddenly tightened.
The sea wind howled like a warning.
"Sage," Preston suddenly spoke, his voice terrifyingly soft, "recently, have you said or done anything to Marina?"
I looked at him in confusion:
"Preston, I've never even met Marina. I don't have her contact info or anything."
He pulled at the corner of his mouth:
"Then how did you know she was on the ninety-ninth floor, and that she was pregnant... Never mind. Doesn't matter now."
The next second, he slammed on the gas pedal, steering the car straight toward the ocean.
Over my parents' screams, he glared at me:
"Sage Sinclair, you deliberately told me Marina was on the ninety-ninth floor so I'd have to watch her die without being able to save her, didn't you?"
"Since you're so vicious, your whole fucking family can pay for Marina's life!"
