When I opened my eyes again, I was at the bachelor party the night before the wedding.
Friends were scattered around in small groups, some playing cards, others drinking and chatting. The private room was buzzing with activity.
Preston was singing "Love Story" with deep emotion.
"We were both young when I first saw you. I closed my eyes and the flashback starts. I'm standing there On a balcony in summer air..."
Friends started teasing him:
"Oh man, Preston's thinking about his first love again, right? Marina something?"
"Hell yeah! Those two were so sweet back then. He spent a fortune to rename the campus maple avenue to Marina Lane. Every damn day for four years, you'd see them walking hand in hand."
"When he found out Marina was coming back, Preston drove to the airport with tears streaming down his face..."
Preston clicked his tongue and pulled me close:
"Sage, don't listen to their BS. That's all ancient history. You're the only one in my heart now."
Seeing his familiar face brought me crashing back from the drowning nightmare.
Our eyes locked, and without hesitation, I slapped him hard across the face.
"Preston Ashford, you bastard! I'm calling off our engagement!"
The entire room suddenly fell dead silent.
Preston gripped my wrist tightly, his face dark as thunder:
"Sage Sinclair, are you out of your damn mind? Breaking off our engagement over a song?"
His menacing expression brought back memories of dying horribly twice.
Fear and trauma made my eyes well up with tears.
"You want a reason?" My voice trembled. "You're still in love with Marina—does that count? Marina's pregnant—does that count?"
"Pregnant?"
He froze completely, opening his mouth but unable to speak.
I shook off his grip and pulled out my phone with trembling hands:
"Look closely! I don't have Marina's contact info, and I've never reached out to her!"
"Go find her right now! Marry her! I wish you both eternal happiness! But if anything happens to her again, don't you dare come after me and my parents!"
Tears streaming down my face, I turned and ran out.
I stumbled through the underground parking garage and finally collapsed on the ground, my legs giving out.
My phone suddenly buzzed with a message from Mom:
"Sweetie, big day tomorrow. Get to bed early—puffy eyes won't look good in photos."
This simple, caring message made my eyes burn, and I finally snapped back to reality.
This was my second time being reborn.
Mom and Dad were still alive, Marina hadn't stepped onto the ninety-ninth floor yet, and Preston and I had already called off our engagement.
So maybe... maybe the ending would be different this time?
Just then, Marina's timid voice drifted over:
"Preston, I... I'm carrying your baby. Can you please not get married? I've regretted leaving ever since. Please forgive me, okay?"
I let out a long sigh of relief.
Perfect—she wouldn't try to kill herself now, right?
But Preston's next words made my heart plummet.
"A baby? Keep it if you want, abort it if you don't. Just stop bothering me."
Marina staggered back two steps, her face deathly pale.
I saw a look of finality flash in her eyes, her whole body swaying.
Preston just turned and walked away coldly.
In that moment, everything clicked.
Calling off the engagement wouldn't change anything.
Only by protecting Marina, keeping her alive, letting them be together—that was the only way to break this nightmare!
"Apologize! Preston!"
I rushed forward to steady Marina, shouting at Preston's retreating figure,
"Preston Ashford, you'd burn down the entire world for her, so why can't you just admit it? Are you really too much of a coward to speak the truth?"
