Preston whipped around and reached for my hand:
"Sage Sinclair, what the hell is wrong with you now?"
"I'll let that slap slide—you must've had a nightmare or something."
"It's getting late. We need to get some rest. Tomorrow's wedding is gonna be exhausting."
I slapped his hand away and turned to shield Marina, looking into her eyes:
"Don't believe a word he says. The truth is, he loves you deeply. You're the one he really wants to marry."
"You should be the bride at tomorrow's wedding. We're about the same size—my wedding dress should fit you perfectly."
Honestly, this was my first time seeing Marina in person.
Her features were actually about fifty percent similar to mine, just with a more delicate demeanor.
"See that? We look so alike." I gave a bitter smile. "All these years, I've been nothing but your stand-in. Now that the real deal is back, it's time for me to exit stage left."
Marina froze for a moment, then curled her lips in a mocking smile:
"Sage Sinclair, are you done with your little performance? Saying all this reverse psychology bullshit—you're just trying to humiliate me, aren't you?"
She didn't believe me?!
I panicked and grabbed Marina's hand:
"Marina, I'm telling the truth! If you don't believe me, ask Preston!"
"Sage Sinclair!" Preston's face was terrifyingly dark.
"Have you lost your damn mind? Do I look like the kind of guy who'd marry someone I don't love? It's been five years—don't you know how I feel about you?"
I turned to look at Marina. She was biting her lip hard, her eyes already red.
"Preston, how long are you gonna keep up this act!"
Furious, I grabbed both their hands and forced them together.
"Whatever misunderstanding you two have, you're sorting it out today!"
Preston yanked his hand back and hoisted me over his shoulder without a word, giving my butt a sharp smack:
"Sage Sinclair, listen up—you're the only one I love!"
Marina's tears fell like broken pearls, and my heart twisted into knots:
"Marina, please believe me—Preston and I have nothing! You have to come to the wedding tomorrow. You're the only one who should be the bride!"
Preston let out a cold laugh at this, tightened his grip around me, and strode toward the exit.
Marina's hollow laugh drifted from behind me:
"Preston... do I have to die before you'll forgive me?"
Preston paused mid-step and threw back without turning around: "Then go die."
My blood instantly ran cold.
Shit, shit!
This fucking lunatic! How could he say something like that so casually!
"Preston Ashford, when are you gonna stop this insanity!"
I pounded on his back in fury.
"Marina went abroad back then to better herself so she'd be worthy of you. Can't you be the bigger person here?!"
When he didn't react, I desperately bit down on his neck.
He let out a pained grunt, his voice suddenly dropping low:
"Sage, do you really hate me this much?"
"Yes! Yes! I hate you! So can you please put me down?!" I raised my hand, pointing toward Marina. "Go find someone who doesn't hate you, someone who actually loves you!"
But the next second, she collapsed right before my eyes.
"Marina!! Don't die!!" I screamed, my voice tearing from my throat.
Hearing this, Preston immediately released his grip on me, and I crashed heavily to the ground.
The back of my head hit the cold concrete, sending sharp pain shooting through my skull. Everything spun before my eyes.
Through the haze, I saw Preston stumble toward Marina, trembling as he pulled her into his arms: "Marina! Look at me! Don't scare me..."
I managed to pull the corner of my mouth into a smile.
This was... good.
They were finally together.
My parents and I were safe.
This nightmare could finally end.
