My brain suddenly went completely blank.
Marina's child wasn't Preston's?
Then why had she lied in the previous lives? And why hadn't Preston denied it?
What the hell were they trying to pull!
The more I thought about it, the more confused I became. I couldn't help but confront Marina directly.
In the living room, she was focused on studying Sinclair's investment reports.
"Ms. Sinclair?" She hurriedly stood up.
"You're pregnant?" I cut straight to the point. "Whose child is it?"
Her face instantly went pale:
"Ms. Sinclair, I didn't mean to hide it from you. I was afraid you'd refuse to let me work at the company because of the baby... Don't worry, even pregnant, I can still do excellent work."
"Marina, I don't care about that. I'm only asking you—whose child is it really?"
I had to find out if the reason she sought death was because of this child.
Maybe all of this had nothing to do with Preston and me at all...
Marina kept her head down in silence for a long time, then suddenly let out a mocking laugh:
"Sage Sinclair, stop pretending. I know you're Preston's fiancée."
"You're pressing me like this because you want to know if the child is his, right?"
"I know it's not his," I said calmly.
Marina's smile instantly froze. She opened her mouth but couldn't speak.
"Sage," Preston appeared in the doorway at some point, his face showing a moved smile, "I knew you'd trust me completely."
Marina's head snapped up, tears streaming down her face: "Preston, it's been three years. Are you... doing well?"
Preston moved to my side, his gaze sweeping coldly over Marina, his voice carrying suppressed anger:
"Marina Delacroix, in the last life after you returned to the States, you kept saying you wanted to apologize in person, that you'd always felt you owed me."
"I met with you out of old sentiment, and what happened? You drugged my drink. Lucky I came to my senses in time."
"I never even touched you—how could this child possibly be mine? I didn't expose you publicly out of old feelings. But why did you plant that bomb? Why did you kill..."
"Preston!" I shouted to stop him.
He'd almost mentioned the explosion from the previous life.
What if it triggered Marina and we repeated the same tragedy?
"Preston?" Marina looked completely confused. "What previous life? I would never do those things you're talking about. I love you so much—how could I possibly hurt you?"
"Love?" Preston scoffed. "The kind of love that makes me a sucker dad?"
Marina took a deep breath, her voice trembling: "Preston, I really never thought of..."
Before she could finish, Preston grabbed my wrist: "We're leaving. Don't waste time with this crazy woman."
Preston's grip was surprisingly strong. I couldn't break free and could only look back at Marina.
She stood frozen in place, her eyes churning with bone-deep hatred, staring at me like a venomous snake.
A deep exhaustion suddenly overwhelmed me.
So no matter how hard I tried, the ending would never change.
Marina was destined to hate me to the bone, and I was destined to die because of that hatred.
I was completely fed up and sick of it all.
"Let go!" I violently shook off Preston's hand, my mouth twisting into a bleak smile. "Preston Ashford, meeting you is the biggest regret of my life."
But he stubbornly tried to take my hand again:
"Sage, don't be like this. In this life, I'll protect you. I absolutely won't let her harm you in the slightest."
How confident he was.
But hadn't it been Preston Ashford himself who'd personally sent me to the afterlife in the previous two lives?
These two people—one crazy, one poisonous—not a decent person between them!
I simply lay down on the ground, completely giving up:
"Fine, let me die. I've died three times already anyway—one more doesn't matter. Consider it unlocking a new death method."
"Died three times?!" Preston's whole body shook, his face changing dramatically.
"Sage Sinclair, go die!"
With Marina's shrill scream, she raised a huge vase and smashed it toward me.
I closed my eyes waiting for death, but heard a dull thud.
Preston collapsed heavily on top of me, warm blood dripping onto my cheek.
His trembling hand gently touched my eyes:
"Sage, I told you I'd protect you."
"It's been so long since I saw you smile. When you smile, your eyes curve into crescents—it's the most beautiful thing."
I suddenly remembered he'd said the same thing when we first met.
"When you smile, your eyes curve into crescents. So beautiful."
Marina's smile was gentle and reserved, while mine had always been bright and bold...
My heart suddenly clenched. I tremblingly checked Preston's breathing, but his eyes had already closed.
Marina was restrained by the arriving butler, but she laughed maniacally:
"Sage Sinclair, you're nothing but my substitute! He'll get tired of you sooner or later."
I looked at her, my voice quiet but firm:
"No, I'm not."
