Thirty-Three
Robert woke up early; he was used to having Preston with him while he slept. He had a hard time going to sleep without him next to him. These next couple of weeks will be torture for him. He got up and got dressed so he could leave to see his dad. When he got downstairs, he walked into the kitchen to find only his mom.
“Morning mom,” Robert sat down at the table with her.
“Good morning mijo, how did you sleep?”
“Ok, it could have been better.”
“Are you already leaving?”
“Yeah I want to spend as much time as I can with him.”
“Ok mijo just be careful ok?”
“I will, bye mom I love you.”
“I love you too mijo.” Robert got up, walked outside to his car, and headed to where his dad has been living for the last six years. When Robert got to the street where his dad lived, he felt like he had been here before. He parked the car and got out. He looked at the house and he could have sworn he had been here before; he knocked on the front door and waited for his dad. When the door opened he recognized the older woman, he looked her and realized he knew why the house was so familiar. This was the home of his grandma Lillian. He couldn’t believe his dad had been here the whole time. When his grandma looked at him, she knew who he was as well.
“Ay dios mio is that you Robbie?” she had tears forming in her eyes; it had been such a long time since she had seen him.
“Yes Abuelita it’s really me.” Robert hugged her and kissed her cheek.  “Ay mijo I haven’t seen you in forever, come on in. your dad is in the back.” Robert followed his abuelita to the back of the house. She had kept it the same from the last time he was here.
“Cristian, Robbie is here to see you.” Robert walked into the room and stood face to face with his dad. He hadn’t changed a bit; he could now see where his looks came from.
“Robbie I’m so glad to see you.” Cristian walked up to him and hugged Robert. Robert had forgotten how good his hugs could make you forget about everything bad.
“I’m glad to see you dad, you have no idea how much I missed you.”
“I’m sorry mijo; I tried to get y’all out of there.”
“I know dad, mom told me everything. So how have you been?”
“Good, but I could be better if I had y’all with me. What about you how have you been?”
“Dad I have to tell you something and I don’t know how you’re going to react.”
“Ok Robbie you can tell me anything.”
“Ok, I met someone and I have fallen in love with this amazing person. I can’t image life without this person.”
“That’s good, what’s her name?”
“His name is Preston and I’m in love with a boy.” Robert waited to see what his dad was going to say about this. He wanted him to be ok with it like his mom. Robert saw his dad and grandma smiling at him.
“When do we get to meet Preston?”
“You’re ok with me being in love with a boy?”
“Yes why not, you can’t help who your heart chooses to fall in love with. Besides I can see you’re happy and if he makes you happy then there isn’t anything wrong with it.” His dad said.
“You’re ok with it too Abuelita?”
“Si mijo, everyone deserves to have happiness in their live regardless of who they are.”
“Thank you that means a lot to me and whenever it is ok I’ll bring him over to meet y’all.”
“So Robbie what else is going on in your life, how is school?”
“School is great, three more semesters and then I go on to three years of law school.”
“I see your uncle is making you follow in his footsteps, is that really what you want?”
“Not really, but I know if I tried to go against him, mom or Nora are going to pay for it.”
“I’m sorry Robbie, I tried to get y’all out, but he found out and he threatened me.”
“I know, don’t worry he will get what’s coming to him in due time. So did mom tell you about Nora?”
“No what’s up with Nora?”
“Well you’re going to become a grandfather, she is pregnant.” Robert’s dad face lit up, as well as his grandma.
“Really, I’m going to be a grandpa?”
“Yup and she is so happy about it too. She and Vince are so in love and happy together. I know she would love to see you too.”
“You know what next time you come bring your boyfriend and your sister and her boyfriend. I want to be a part of both of your lives again.”
“I will, when do you want me to come back?”
“Come back sometime during the week and we will have our own Christmas gathering here.”
“Ok dad I will.” Robert looked at his watch it was getting late and he had to return. “I don’t want to leave, but I have too. I will see you two later on in the week. I love you both.”
“Bye Robbie, I love you,” his dad said as he gave him a hug.
“Bye Abuelita, I miss you already.” Robert hugged and kissed her goodbye. Robert walked to his car and waved at them as he drove off.
Preston walked into the living room to find his mom hanging Christmas decorations. He picked up some lights and started to wrap it around the tree.
“Good morning Preston.” she said as she hugged him.
“Morning mom, where is everyone?”
“Well your dad is at work, Ann Marie stayed at a friend’s house and Xavier is still asleep.”
“Mom, can I talk to you about something?”
“Yeah sure honey, what is it?”
“I broke up with Grant about a month and a half ago.”
“Aw I’m sorry honey what happened?”
“I walked in on him having sex with my roommate.”
“Oh my god honey that is terrible.”
“Yeah I know, but that isn’t what I really wanted to say.”
“Ok what is it then?”
“After what happened I left my dorm room and had nowhere to stay, so I called Robert and talked to him, he told me to stay with him. Well I don’t know if you know but he and Ann Marie were no longer dating. So when Ann Marie found out I was staying with him, she got upset.”
“Well yeah I knew she had called me crying about what happened. She never did tell me who it was he had feelings for.”
“Well I know who it is.”
“Who is it?” Preston took a deep breath before he said anything.
“It’s me, I was the one Robert had feelings for, and we have been dating since that day I moved in with him. Ann Marie found out and now she isn’t talking to me.” Preston waited for his mom’s reaction and hoped she wouldn’t be upset.
“Well it’s about time.”
“What” Preston didn’t understand what his mom meant by that.
“Preston the first time I had you two together in the same room, I could see that there was something between you two. You two just couldn’t see it yet.”
“How was it that everyone else saw this but me?”
“You thought he was straight, so you didn’t bother to see the signs.”
“That’s the same thing I told him.” Xavier said as he walked into the room.
“So you’re not upset about me dating Ann Marie’s ex?”
“No and why should I be, it’s not your fault you two fell in love with each other.”
“Thanks mom.”
“No problem son I love you and like I said nothing will ever change that.”
“Well if we are going ahead and getting things off our chest, I have something I need to say.” Xavier said.
“Ok what is it?”
“I broke off my engagement with Cynthia, because she couldn’t just accept Preston for who he was. I didn’t need that kind of person in my life.”
“Oh thank god, I thought we were going to have to put up with her.” Preston mom said.
“Ok so what nobody liked her?”
“Nope, you’re too much of a good person to be with someone that hateful.”
“Yeah and why don’t you tell mom about your new girlfriend?”
“What, you have a new girlfriend already?”
“No I don’t, we are just friends.”
“Yeah right friends my butt, look at me. I thought Robert and I were just friends and now we are dating. So don’t be so quick to say you two are just friends.”
“Whatever Preston, oh by the way her name is Vera. She is best friends with Robert too.”
“Yeah I’m the one that introduce them to each other.”
“So when do I get to meet her?” Preston mom asked.
“Well it would have to be a time when Ann Marie isn’t here, she never liked Vera. She thought Vera and Robert’s friendship was too close.”
“Oh ok, but I do want to meet her soon.”
“Don't worry mom you will love her.”
They spend the rest of the day hanging up Christmas decoration in the house.
Robert got home late in the evening and found his uncle waiting up for him. Robert thought to himself what he had done that his uncle would be waiting for him?
“Where have you been?” his uncle asked.
“I was out with some friends; I didn’t think you would notice that I was gone. It wouldn’t be the first time I came home late and you don’t notice.” Robert replied sarcastically.
“I don’t need the attitude, just a simple answer to a simple question. I called you three times, why didn’t you pick?”
“Sorry sir, I had my phone on silent. We were watching movies; I couldn’t have the ringer on. What is it that you need?”
“Just that I received a call from the president of your fraternity and he tells me you haven’t been showing up to meetings since the start of the semester. Would you care to explain to me why you haven’t been going?” Robert couldn’t believe Tomas had called his uncle and ratted him out, he told him that he no longer wanted to be part of the frat. He was never supposed to tell his uncle about, for he will stop donating money to them. He could tell his uncle the real reason he quit, but he wasn’t ready for his uncle to find out about him dating Preston just yet.
“Sir the reason I haven’t been going is because I quit. My schoolwork this semester was getting heavier and I couldn’t keep up with all the work, while being a part of the frat. It was either fall behind on my schoolwork or quit the fraternity.” Robert waited for his uncle to respond; he had no expression on his face.
“I just don’t see why you quit, when all you had to do was just tell them you are far too busy to come to all the meetings. I told Tomas that next semester you will try your hardest to attend some of the meetings and any other activates they may have. You’re lucky I have so much influence, they were thinking of not letting you come back.”
“I know and thank you sir, I won’t disappoint you again.”
“Yes you better not; I’m not donating all that money for nothing now.”
“Yes sir, is that all you wanted to speak to me about?”
“Yes you’re free to go, but one more thing Robert.” Robert stopped in his tracks and turned to face his uncle again.
“Yes sir?”
“I want this to be the last time you hide anything from me. If I find out you are hiding anything from me, let’s just say you won’t like the outcome. Here is your chance; do you have anything else you want to tell me?” Robert couldn’t tell him he was dating a boy or that he was sneaking off to see his real father. As long as he was careful, his uncle would never find out.
“No sir, I don’t have anything else that I’m hiding from you.” Robert could feel his uncle’s eyes looking at him to see if he was lying to him.
“Ok you’re free to go.” His uncle waved him off, Robert turned and walked out of the room and went up to his room. Once he was inside, he was finally able to breathe; nothing good will happen if his uncle finds out. He had to make sure he was careful; too many people lives depend on him if he slipped up.
