Thirty-Four
“Robert Robert, wake up.” Robert felt someone shaking him to wake up. Robert grunted and rolled over to see who was trying to wake him up. He came face to face with Nora, then looked at the clock and saw it was six in the morning.
“Ah Nora it’s too early to be up. What is so important that you had to wake me so early?”
“Don't tell me you forgot what today was?” it was too early in the morning for Robert’s brain to be thinking.
“Yes I forgot what is today?” Nora slaps Robert with a pillow on his head.
“Ouch Nora, what the hell did you do that for, my god.” Robert sat up in his bed and rubbed his head.
“I can’t believe you forgot that today was my first ultrasound.”
“Oh crap I am sorry Nora, I thought it was tomorrow. What time is your appointment?”
“It’s not until one, and you better be there on time. Are you going to bring Preston also?”
“I’ll be there and let me call him to see if he is free, I had told him it was tomorrow.”
“Ok” Nora got up from his bed and walked out of the room, he could see her small baby bump, and he wondered how many months she was? Robert got out of bed and grabbed his phone, he wondered if Preston was even awake yet. He dialed Preston’s number and waited for him to answer.
“Oh god who ever this is I’m going to kill you. It is too early in the morning to be getting phone calls. You better have a good reason for calling me.”
“Well good morning to you too amorcito.” Robert chuckled.
“Oh god I’m sorry Robert I had a late night, we were putting up Christmas decorations. What can I do for you?”
“What are you doing later this afternoon?”
“I will be Christmas shopping with Vera and Xavier, why?”
“Any chance you could get out of going with them and by the way why wasn’t I invited to join?”
“No sorry I can’t and you were not invited, because I’m shopping for your Christmas and birthday gift. I want you to be surprise, so what’s up?”
“I told you not to get me anything, but the real reason I’m asking is because Nora’s ultrasound appointment is today not tomorrow. I wanted to see if you could come, but if you can’t I’ll just tell her you’re busy.”
“Dang it Robert I really wanted to be there and just because you don’t want anything doesn’t mean I’m going to listen to you.”
“I’m sorry, just go tomorrow or better yet just don’t get me anything.”
“This is the only time Vera can come with me, I need her help picking your gift. Yes you’re getting a gift whether you like or not.”
“Fine, get me a gift I don’t need or want, but now you’re going to have to let me get you something and it can be whatever I want it to be.”
“I know I’m really going to regret this, but you can’t spend money on it. I want a gift that truly comes from the heart.”
“Hum so I can get you anything I want, but I can’t waste any money on it?”
“That’s right.”
“Ok challenge accepted, oh by the way make sure your home by eight. I want to take you out on a proper date.” Since being together they hadn’t gone out on a real date together in public, Preston wasn’t sure if Robert knew that anyone could see them together and tell his uncle.
“Are you sure you want to go out in public, aren’t you worried about someone seeing us?”
“Yes I’m sure; I don’t care if they see me with you. I’m tired of having to hide being with you, you don’t deserve that.” Preston had been waiting for Robert to take him out in public.
“Ok then, I’ll make sure I’m at home by eight. What we doing on our first day?”
“Sorry can’t tell you, it will ruin the surprise. You will just have to wait, until later tonight.”
“I will see you later and tell Nora I’m sorry I can’t go.”
“I will, see you later amorcito.” Robert hung up the phone and called his dad. If he couldn’t take Preston with him, he would give Nora the biggest surprise of her life.
“Hey Robbie, what can I do for you?” his dad said.
“Hey dad, I wanted to see if you and abuelita would like to join me to go with Nora for her first ultra sound?”
“Of course we would like to go, where, when and what time?”
“It’s at one and I will pick you up, if that’s ok with you.”
“Yes that’s fine, we will see you then.”
“Ok see you later then.”  It still wasn’t seven yet when Robert looked at the clock again, he wanted to go back to sleep, but couldn’t because Nora was up and she would only come in and wake up him again. He decided to go ahead and get ready for the day.
“What can I get Robert?” Preston asked Vera. They had been roaming the mall for the past two hours. He didn’t have the slightest idea to what Robert would really like to have. He was even considering on not getting him anything like he asked.
“You could always get him clothes, books or movies.” Vera said, Preston groaned.
“Those are such common gifts that you get someone you really don’t know. I want to give him something that he will always cherish.”
“You know that whatever you get him he is going to love. I don’t know why you are stressing out about it so much.”
“I just want him to like it that’s all. What do you think of this shirt, you think he will like it?” Preston held up a dark green button up shirt. Vera grabbed the shirt and examined it closer. It was nice fabric and it looks liked it was a fitted shirt, the way Robert likes to wear his shirt.
“It’s good, just the type of shirt he likes, and the color is great, it will bring out the color in his eyes.”
“I thought so too, well here is his Christmas gift, now I just have to figure out what I’m going to get him for his birthday.”
“Well I have an idea, but it’s going to be kind of expensive.”
“I don’t care, money is not issue for me, what is it?”
“You can get him a pocket watch and have it engraved. He has always wanted one.”
“Ok yeah that sounds great, where can I get one?”
“I think I saw a jewelry store back there, let’s go check it out.” Vera said as she pulled Preston back in the other direction. They found the shop it was the Galleria Watch Collection.  They walked in and they walked up to the counter to ask for the pocket watches.
“How can I help you today?” said the man behind the counter.
“We are looking for a pocket watch that we can have engraved and also do you do engravings?”
“Right over here we have an assortment of pocket watches and yes we do engrave. However if you wanted it for Christmas, we can’t have it ready by then. We are backed up with orders.”
“That’s fine I didn’t need if for Christmas, but if I was to get it right now would it be ready by the end of the month?” Preston asked.
“Yes we can have it ready for you by then, now which one would you like?” Vera and Preston looked at the watches and decided on a white gold one.
“Ok now what would you like to have engraved on it?” the man handed Preston a card, he wrote down what he wanted and handed the card back to the man. The man rang up the item and Preston paid for them.
“If you leave us your name and number and we will call you when the watch is ready for you to pick it up.” Preston wrote down his name and number.
“It was nice doing business with you and we will let you know when it is ready.”
“Ok thank you.” Vera and Preston walked out of the shop.
“Awesome I’m done with my shopping, what do you want to do now?” Preston asked.
“Well I’m done too, why we don’t just bum around until we have to leave. So you can get ready for your hot date with your boyfriend.”
“Ok come on then.”
Robert pulled up to his dad’s place and walked up to the door. He knocked and waited for them to open up.
“Hey Robbie, it’s just me that is going. Your abuelita is making food; she wants us to come back here when we are done.”
“Ok sounds great, let’s go before Nora kills me for being late. By the way she doesn’t know you’re coming, I wanted to surprise her.”
“That’s fine, so you want me to hide until you’re ready for me to come out?”
“Yeah I want her to go in first and then we will go in, she has wanted to see you.”
“I missed her and I can’t wait to see her again.” They arrived at the hospital, Cristian waited outside of the waiting room until Robert came for him. Robert walked in and he was told Nora just went in and he was told he could go back there. Robert told his dad to come and they went in together. Robert was the first one to walk in, just as the doctor was setting everything up.
“You’re late Robert,” Nora said as he walked in. “And where is Preston?”
“Sorry he couldn’t come, but I did bring you a surprise.”
“What surprise?”
“Ok you can come on in,” Robert said as he moved aside to let in their dad. When Nora saw who it was she started to cry.
“Daddy is that really you?” Nora said through her tears.
“Yes mija it’s really me, I have missed you so much.” Cristian said as he walked over to her and hugged her. He kissed the top of her head and wiped away the tears from her face.
“I have waited so long; I prayed that one day I would get to see you again.”
“I know mija, me too.” Cristian turns towards where Vince was. “So you’re the young man that got my daughter pregnant?” Nora started to blush.
“Yes sir, but you don’t have to worry; I would never leave your daughter. I love her sir.” Vince said as he grabbed Nora’s hand.
“That’s good to heard and I hope you always make my daughter happy as well.”
“Well if everybody is ready we can start.” The doctor said. She pours a clear gel on Nora’s belly and ran the transducer over her belly. On the screen, she showed them where the baby was and they heard the heartbeat.
“So that’s your baby’s heartbeat and from the looks of it your about seven weeks.”
“Oh my God that is our baby in there.” Vince said.
“I know and I can’t wait until we find out what we are having.”
“Me either” Vince gave her a kiss. When they were done there, they went back to their dad’s place. Nora was the first inside the house and she is greeted by her abuelita.
“Aye mija I have missed you so much and you have grown so much.” Her abuelita hugged her and kissed her on the cheek.
“I missed you too abuelita.” Nora started to cry again. “Abuelita this is my boyfriend Vince.” Vince went to shake her hand, but was pulled into a hug instead.
“It’s nice to meet you mijo and you can just call me abuelita. You are family now.”
“Thank you, abuelita.” Liliana turns to Robert. “And where is this Preston you keep talking about, I want to meet this boy that has stolen my grandson’s heart.”
“Sorry abuelita, he couldn’t come today, but when we come over here to celebrate Christmas, I’ll make sure to bring him.”
“Ok I’ll let it go this one time, now come on let’s eat.”  They all walked into the kitchen to have lunch.
“It was already seven when Robert and Nora got back home. They saw that their uncle wasn’t home.
“Thank god he isn’t home, I really don’t need him asking us where we have been all day.” Nora said as she walked up the stairs, “I’m so tired, I think I’m going to bed already. What are you going to do?”
“I will be taking Preston out on our first public date.”
“Wow, you’re not worried about being seen by anyone that can tell uncle?”
“No and if I’m seen I don’t care; besides Preston doesn’t deserve to be kept hidden just because uncle will never accept it.”
“Your right, we’ll have fun then.” Nora went to her room while Robert went to his and got ready. He pulled up to Preston’s house and waited for him to come out. Preston told him to wait in the car for him; he didn’t want Ann Marie to make a scene if she saw Robert. Preston walked out of the house and got in the car.
“Hey snookums” Preston said as he gave Robert a kiss. Robert smirked at him.
“Snookums, is that my pet name now?”
“Yes, since you have one for me, why can’t I give you one? Don’t you like it?”
“It will take some time to get used to it, but I think it will grow on me.”
“So what are we doing on our first date?”
“Well I was thinking of dinner and a movie, and then followed by a late night stroll on the beach while eating ice cream.”
“That sounds great, let’s go.” They got to the theater, got their tickets and snacks, Robert let Preston talk him into watching the latest romantic comedy. They found good seat in the back and sat down. Robert didn’t really care for the movie, but if it made Preston happy then he was willing to sit there and watch it with him. After the movie and dinner they stopped to get ice cream.
“What kind of ice cream do you want?” Robert asked Preston.
“Um I think I will take the mint chocolate chip, double scoop please.”
“Ok can I have a double scoop of mint chocolate chip and a double scoop of chocolate?” Robert told the girl working behind the counter. She smiled and flirted with Robert as she was getting the cones ready. Preston could see that she was giving Robert more ice cream then she should. Preston just shook his head and laughed. Robert looked at him and winked at him. When they got their cones, they headed for the beach to take a walk while they ate their ice cream.
“So how do you like that extra scoop of ice cream?” Preston asked.
“It really good and it’s not my fault that girls find me hot. What do you want me to do, break her heart and tell her I have a boyfriend?’
“Well yeah, how do you think I feel about my man flirting with another girl?”
“Um nothing, it’s not like she could have taken me away from you any way. Like I told you before, you’re the only one for me.” Robert pulled Preston towards him and gave him a kiss.
“I know I just like it when you tell me.” Preston laughed as he smeared his ice cream on Roberts face and took off running.
“Oh you are going to pay for that.” Robert ran after him and tackled Preston onto the sand. They rolled around in the sand and came to a stop with Robert on top of Preston. Robert held Preston down, Preston tried to break free from Robert’s gripe, but couldn’t. Robert wiped off the ice cream on his face and wiped it on Preston’s face.
“Ah come on Robert that is gross.”
“Hey you did it to me first; I’m just returning the favor.” Robert gave him a kiss before he got off Preston and helped him to his feet. Preston wiped the ice cream off.
“Ewe gross my face is all sticky now.” Robert went over to the water and started to splash Preston. “Oh my God Robert, will you stop that.” Robert just laughed and continued to splash him. Preston got closer to him and pushed him into the water. While Preston was laughing, he didn’t see Robert get up. Robert grabbed him and threw him into the water. Preston got out of the water and tackled Robert, when they stopped rolling around Preston had gotten on top of Robert. They were looking at each other, they hadn’t had this much fun before. It felt good to be able to go out together as a couple and not care what people will say. Preston leaned down and kissed Robert.  Robert deepens the kiss as he rolled over, so Preston was on the bottom. Robert was the first to break the kiss; he knew if he didn’t stop now, they were going to get lost in the moment. This is not the place he wanted their first time to be. Robert got up and pulled Preston up.
“Come on it’s getting late.” Robert had his arm around Preston’s waist. They got back to the car and rode in silence. Robert pulled up to Preston’s house.
“I had a lot of fun tonight; we should do it more often.” Preston said.
“Of course, oh by the way I want you to come with me to my dad’s for a small Christmas gathering. They want to meet you.” Preston couldn’t believe Robert had told his dad about him.
“Yeah sure just tell me when.”
“Ok it’s on Thursday and I also want you to come over to the annual Christmas party my uncle has which is on Friday.”
“Ok, but you’re not worried about your uncle asking why I’m there.”
“No because you will be coming with Vera, he would never allow me to take you as a date, but don’t worry we will still be together.”
“Ok no problem, I will see you then. Bye my snookums.” Preston kissed him, got out of the car, and walked into his house. Robert laughed at his pet name from Preston; it was going to take a awhile for him to get used to it.
