It was Thursday and Preston was still nervous about meeting Robert’s dad. He knew he was just worrying about nothing, but it was just in his nature to worry. Preston had been up since early this morning and couldn’t decide on what to wear. Robert had told him it was semi-casual, but everything he tried on was wrong. Preston sat down on his bed and grabbed a pillow to scream into. When he was done he looked around his room, it looked like it was hit by a tornado. His clothes were everywhere. He heard a knock at the door, “come in,” he said as he started to pick up his clothes off the floor. His mom walked into the room and stared at the mess Preston had on the floor.
“What’s with all the clothes on the floor?” Erin asked
“I can’t decide on what to wear, I’m going to meet Robert’s dad today and I don’t know what to wear.” Preston said.
“Well did Robert tell you what you should wear?”
“Yes. It’s just that nothing I try on feels right. I want to make a good first impression; I just want him to like me.”
“Oh honey of course he is going to like you, who wouldn’t like you. Besides Robert wouldn’t take you there if he felt like his dad wouldn’t like you.” Preston knew his mom was right, Robert would never take him somewhere he knew they wouldn’t like him.
“Thanks mom your right.” Erin picked up a navy blue V-neck sweater and handed it to Preston along with a white t-shirt.
“Here try this on; the sweater will bring out the color of your eyes more.” Preston grabbed the sweater and let out a chuckle.
“What’s so funny?” Erin asked.
“This is the same sweater I was wearing the day I first met Robert. It’s funny that out of everything I own, you picked this out.”
“Well then you should take it as a sign that today is going to be good and you shouldn’t worry so much.”
“Ok mom thanks, I should really get ready. Robert will be here for me in about an hour.”
“Ok honey, by the way I made a triple chocolate cake for you to take. I know how it is Robert’s favorite.” Preston shut the door after his mom and went to go get ready.
“Nora are you ready, come on we are going to be late.” Robert said as he walked into her room. He found Nora laying on her bed trying to button up her pant. “You know they make pants with elastics on them, and then you wouldn’t be having this problem right now.” Nora groaned, grabbed a pillow and threw it at Robert. Robert ducked and laughed at her.
“It’s not funny Robert, none of my pants fit me and all my tops are starting to fit really tight at well.” Nora said and gave up on trying buttoning up her pants. Robert knew that this was going to happen, so he had gone shopping for some maternity clothes for her.
“Here,” Robert handed her a bag he had behind his back. Nora looked at him and took the bag from him. She opened the bag and pulled out all the clothes.
“Robert you got me maternity clothes.” Nora eyes started to water, she was grateful to have Robert as her big brother. “Thank you Robert.” Nora said as she gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek.
“I’m glad you like them, now come on change so we can go pick up Vince and Preston.” Nora nodded her head and went to the bathroom to change.
Robert drove up to Preston’s house; he got out of the car and went to the front door. This was the first time he had been here since he and Grant got into an argument. Robert rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer. He was greeted by Preston’s mom Erin.
“Hi Robert come on in, Preston is still getting ready.”
“Hi Erin, it’s nice to see you again.” Robert sat down on the couch, he was nervous on what Erin might ask him.
“So Robert, how have you been?”
“Good, well actually I have been doing really great.” Robert said as he was looking around nervously. Erin could see that Robert was worried about what she might think of him.
“Relax Robert, I’m ok with everything. Actually I told Preston I had a feeling something was going to happen between you two.” Robert let a sigh of relief.
“Thanks, I wasn’t sure what Preston had told you. I am just sorry that Ann Marie got the short end of the stick here, I never intended on hurting her like that.”
“I know, like I told Preston, just give her time and she will come around.” Preston was standing by the stairs as he heard his mom and Robert talk. He was glad his mom was ok with them dating and Robert knew how she felt. He grabbed his jacket and joined them in the living room.
“Hey snookums” Preston said as he kissed Robert. Erin laughed at Robert’s pet name.
“That is so cute, never thought you were the type that liked having a pet name.”
“Didn’t really have a choice, but it’s starting to grow on me.” Robert said. “Well come on, I have Nora and Vince waiting in the car for us.” Preston walked back to the kitchen to grab the cake.
“Sorry I had to get this before we left; my mom made you a triple chocolate cake.” Preston said.
“Yum can’t wait to eat it, thanks Erin.” Robert said.
“No problem, I know how much you love it. Well you two have fun and Preston just relax.” Erin said as she hugged and kissed him.
“Ok mom I will.” They went to the car and headed to Robert’s dad place. They pulled up to a medium sized house. Preston was the last one out of the car; he didn’t want to go in. He felt like Robert’s dad wasn’t going to like him.
“Come amorcito relax my dad and abuelita are going to love you.” Robert reassured him. Preston nodded his head and walked up to the door with them. Robert opened the door and walked in holding Preston’s hand. They were greeted by Robert’s abuelita. She was a small petit woman with hazel eyes and her black hair streaked with grey. She wore it in a tight bun.
“Your finally here, come on into the living room, your dad is still at work, but he will be here soon. Can I get you kids something to drink or eat?” Liliana asked.
“No abuelita we are fine, we can wait until dad gets here. By the way this is Preston.” Robert said. Preston stuck out his hand but got a hug instead.
“So you’re the young man that has stolen my grandson’s heart, it is finally nice to meet you.” Liliana said.
“Yes ma’am, I guess that would be me and I brought a cake.” Preston was about to relax a little now that he knew he passed her approval.
“Well I’m glad he found someone he really loves. Here let me take that to the kitchen. So tell me a little about yourself.” Robert sat back and watched as Preston and his abuelita talked, he was glad his family really liked Preston. Robert turned his attention towards the door and saw his dad walk in.
“Hello family, sorry I’m late.” Cristian said as he sat down next to Nora.
“Hey dad I want you to meet someone very special to me. Dad this is Preston.” Preston got up from where he was sitting and went over to shake his hand. He could see where Robert got most of his good looks from. Robert had the same beautiful hazel eyes and almost black hair as his dad. They were almost the same height, give or take an inch.
“It’s finally nice to meet you so, and just call me Cristian.”
“It’s nice to meet you too Cristian.”
“I know that we are here to get to know each and everything, but I’m really hungry.” Vince said as Nora elbowed him in the stomach.
“Dang it Vince, can’t you just go at least one hour before you start complaining about being hungry?” Nora said
“No I can’t, so when are we going to eat?” everyone but Nora started to laugh at him. “What I’m hungry.”
“Ok come on everyone; let’s go into the kitchen to eat. I hope everyone is super hungry, I made a lot of food.” Liliana said. They all walked into the kitchen to eat, this was Preston’s first time ever having a Christmas dinner that didn’t have the traditional ham and stuffing. He was offered different varieties of Mexican cuisine. He felt like he was in food heaven. He sampled a little bit of everything on the table. By the end of the dinner he was stuffed, he hadn’t even saved some room for dessert. Robert’s abuelita and Nora cleared the table so they could play loteria, which was explained to Preston and Vince as Mexican bingo. After two hours of playing, they had dessert in the living room.
“This chocolate cake is good, who made it?” Cristian asked.
“My mom did she knew how much Robert enjoys it.” Preston said.
“So Preston Robert tells me you are majoring in journalism, what field do you plan on working in?”
“I want to work on a newspaper and not just any newspaper. I hope that one day I can write for the New York Times.” Preston said.
“Wow I hope your dream comes true for you.”
“Thank you, I hope so too. I just want to say I’m glad you have allowed me into your home and have made me feel welcomed.” Preston said.
“No problem, the pleasure is all ours. I’m just glad my son has found someone that makes him happy.” Preston smiled at Robert, he was glad he got to meet and spend some time with Robert’s family.
“Well I don’t mean to cut this short but we have to leave. But you know we have to get back early before he gets home.” Robert said.
“Of course son, we understand. It was nice seeing all of you and I hope we can all do this again.” Cristian said. They all said their goodbyes and got into the car. Robert dropped off Nora and Vince off first before he left Preston at his house. Robert pulled up to Preston’s house; it was still kind of early.
“Did you have a good time?” Robert asked.
“I did, I really loved meeting your family and spending time with them.” Preston said.
“Me too and see you had nothing to worry about.”
“I know, so what time are you picking me up tomorrow?”
“Sorry I can’t pick you up, Vera is going to pick you up and take you to the party.” Preston was a little disappointed, he was hoping to be alone with Robert for a little bit, but he guessed Robert would be able to figure something out for them to be alone.
”Ok that’s fine, what do I have to wear?”
“Semi-formal, by the way I was meaning to ask is that the same sweater you were wearing on the first day we met?” Preston laughed; he didn’t think he was going to remember.
“Yeah it was, my mom picked it out for me to wear. She said it would bring out the color of my eyes more.” Robert looked at Preston and leaned in to kiss him.
“She was right, it really does. Well I’ll let you go and get a good night sleep I will see you tomorrow. Bye amorcito.”
“Ok bye snookum see you tomorrow.” Preston kissed him one more time before he got out of the car. He went inside and went straight to his bed and waited for tomorrow.
