The next morning Vera walked into Robert’s room and opened the curtains, it was already one in the afternoon and Robert was still sleeping. As soon as the sunlight filled the room, she could heard Robert moving in his bed
“Oh my god, close the damn curtains.” Robert groaned and covers his head with a pillow. Vera jumped onto his bed and started to shake him to get out of bed.
“Come on it’s time to wake up.” Robert grabbed one of the pillows and chunked it at Vera.
“Vera, go away, I don’t feel good and you’re just making it worse with the yelling and jumping on the bed.” Robert felt like his head was going to explode, the light from outside was burning his eyes. Even the birds chirping outside were too loud for Robert’s ears and only intensified his headache. What was he think about last night, when he decided to drink almost two whole bottles of liquor? He sat up in his bed and looked at Vera, she handed him a glass of water and some aspirins
“Thanks,” Robert took the pills and drank all the water.
“So how are you feeling, besides having a killer hangover?” Vera asked, he knew what she was talking about and he felt like he had his heart ripped out and stomped on.
“Fine,” Robert got out of his bed, he needed to take a long hot shower, he reeked of alcohol and he was still wearing his clothes from yesterday. As he started to remove his hoodie a small box fell out of the pocket. Vera picked it up and handed it to him.
“You sure your fine?” she asked. Robert opened the box and stared at the ring, he had planned on giving Preston the ring last night. It wasn’t the romantic setting he had in mind, but he didn’t want to wait any longer. Then all the anger and frustration he felt when he saw Preston kissing Grant came rushing back. He yelled out in anger and threw the box against the wall. As it smashed into the wall the ring fell out and landed on the floor. Vera sighed as she walked over to pick it up.
“That right there is a sign you’re not fine, what you plan on doing with this?” she said as she handed him the ring back. Robert took the ring and sighed, he didn’t know what to do with it. A part of him wanted to throw it away. The other part wanted to keep it in hopes Preston realize he is making a big mistake getting back with Grant. He took off his St. Jude pendent and placed the ring on the chain, he wouldn’t get rid of it just yet.
“Like I said I’m fine, let me just shower and change and I will be downstairs in minute. Don’t tell my mom or Nora anything yet, I want to tell them.” Robert said as he made his way to his bathroom. Vera nodded her head and walked out of his room. Robert turned on his shower and waited for the hot water to kick in; he got undressed and got in the shower letting the hot water cascade down his body. The hot water helped his pounding headache, but didn’t do much for the ache he felt in his chest. He didn’t think nothing could ever make that go away. No matter how much time passes, he will always have that ache in his chest. He got out of the shower and got dressed, and he went downstairs. When he walked into the living room he found his mom, Nora and Vera waiting for him.
“Good afternoon mijo, are you hungry; I can make you something to eat if you like?” his mom asked, he could see that her face was filled with worry.
“Yes that would be nice, thanks mom.” Tanya got up and went into the kitchen; Robert took a seat next to Nora. He turned to face her, “I’m sorry about last night, I really didn’t mean to or have the right to snap at you like that. I hope you can forgive me?” Nora looked at him and smiled, hugged him.
“Don’t ever do that to me again, you scared crap out of me with how upset you were. Are you going to tell me what was wrong?” Nora asked, he could see that her eyes were starting to water. Everything lately has been getting her all emotional and she cries a lot.
“Let’s go to the kitchen I want to tell you and mom at the same time.” Robert helped Nora up and they all walked into the kitchen as Tanya finished making Robert a sandwich. They all sat at the table and Tanya placed the sandwich in front of Robert.
“Here you go mijo, so what is it you needed to tell us?” Robert took a bit out of his sandwich. He knew how much they loved Preston and thought they were perfect together, but telling them that Preston broke up with him was going to hurt them.
“Yesterday when I went to go see Preston, I walked in on him and Grant kissing.” Both his mom and Nora gasped, but he stopped them before they could say anything. “That’s not even the worst part.” Robert said; he took a deep breath he still had a hard time believing that Preston broke up with him. “The worst part is that he broke up with me so he could get back with Grant.” Nora looked at him; he could see that she was going to start crying.
“Why would he break up with you, you two were so happy? You were going to propose to him.” Nora asked as she started to cry. It was breaking his heart just to see her getting upset over it. He gets up and went over to where she was sitting, pulled her into his arms.
“Hey you don’t need to cry, it’s ok; everything will turn out fine.” Robert wiped away the last of her tears.
“How can you be so ok with it, doesn’t it just make you angry that he would leave you like that for that douche?” Robert let out a small chuckle and smiled at her, because he had always referred to Grant as being a douche. She was right about him being angry; he was but didn’t know who he was angrier at.
“I have no other choice but to be ok with it, it’s not like I can get him to change his mind.”
“Why not, maybe he is just confused and just needs you to remind him how much you really love him. Why didn’t you just propose to him, then he wouldn’t have broken up with you. Why didn’t you try harder?”
She was right. Why didn’t he just try harder; he should have just said he would stay friends. Being friends with Preston would have probably been better than not being with him at all.  “I don’t know why I didn’t try harder, I was just so mad I wasn’t really thinking.”
“Call him or go see him, do whatever you have to do to get him back.”
“Nora it’s not that easy, I said things that weren’t nice and I doubt he would even want to see me. I lost my temper and I punched Grant in the face.”
“Robert how could you; don’t you know he could press charges on you?” Tanya said.       Robert knew and wouldn’t be surprised if he did.  “I know mom, I was just so angry and it didn’t help that he was getting in my face. But none the less it’s over between us; you didn’t see the look on his face when he told me he didn’t love me anymore.” Robert replayed the look on Preston’s face when he told him he didn’t love him anymore. When he heard him say that he could have sworn he heard his heart break into a million pieces.
“So what is going to happen now?” Vera asked.
“School starts next week and I’m going to leave tomorrow, I just need to get out of here and get all of Preston’s stuff packed up. I told him he can pick it up at your place if that is alright.”
“Yeah sure and I’m going with you, you shouldn’t really be alone.”
“I really don’t have a choice do I?”
“Nope, you know you never do.”
“Mijo I wish you would stay a little longer, you shouldn’t run away from things in your life, no matter how bad they are.”
“I know mom and I’m not running, just trying to move on with my life.” Robert placed his plate in the sink. “I’m going to start packing up my things and I’ll take you guys out for dinner.”
“Ok mijo,” Tanya hugged and kissed him before leaving the kitchen. Robert turned to Nora, who was still crying.
“I’m I going to get a hug?” Robert stood next to her with his arms open. She wiped her eyes and got up to hug him.
“What if I just talk to Preston for you and maybe I can convince him to get back with you?”
“Nora stop, it’s over and done with. I know how much you loved Preston, but you just can’t force love on someone. He made it clear I’m not what he wants and it doesn’t matter who talks to him, he isn’t going to change his mind.” Robert gave her a kiss on the top of her head and let go of her. “Be sure you tell Vince about dinner and for my sake, stop worrying about what happened between me and Preston. I don’t want you to get yourself all stressed out about this. I don’t want you or the baby to get sick.” Nora nodded her head and left the kitchen.
“So I’ll pick you and Vince around seven, should give you enough time to get your things ready.”
Vera just stared at Robert, something wasn’t right. He was way too calm for a person who just had the love of his life break his heart.  “What’s your deal, you’re too calm for a person whose heart was just ripped out and stomped on?” Vera asked.
“I had spent three months of my life mopping around for him already, I’m not about to do that again. Why am I going to wait around for him again?”
“Because he is the one for you and your being stupid if you’re giving up that easy, that’s not the Robert I know.”
“Vera just drop it, it’s done and over with. He isn’t going to change his mind.”
“How do you know?”
“I just know you didn’t see what I saw in his eyes. Now I’m going to go upstairs and get my stuff ready for tomorrow. If I were you I would be doing the same or I will leave without you.” Robert said as he left the kitchen, leaving Vera alone. She wasn’t going to drop it, in fact she was going to go see Preston and ask him what his problem was.
Vera got to the hospital and walked to Preston’s room. She was glad no one was there as she walked in.
“Hey Preston how are you doing?” she said as she sat in the chair next to his bed.
“Hey Vera, I’m doing a whole lot better now that they told me I get to go home tomorrow.”
“That’s great; hey I’m sorry I didn’t come by sooner to see you.”
“That’s alright, I’m sure you were pretty busy. So how have you been?” Preston looked at Vera; he could tell she knew about him and Robert. He was just waiting for her say something.
“Oh I been ok just was worried about you, glad you’re ok now. You had us all scared there for a while.”
“I know, but I’m better now.” Preston smiled weakly at her. “How is he?” If she wasn’t going to say anything, he was going to. It was killing him not knowing how he was doing.
“He says he is doing fine, but we all know it’s not true.” Vera was looking around the room; Preston knew she was waiting for him to say something about them breaking up.
“Why don’t you just come out and ask me why we broke up, I know your dying to know the reason why.” Preston said.
“I was waiting for when you were ready to tell me, but yes I want to know why?”
“Sure things were going great between us, but I just ran into Grant and I still felt something there between us. I knew if I didn’t try it again with him, I was going to regret it. I didn’t mean to hurt Robert, I just had to do what I thought was best.”
“Best, how was getting with Grant best? He cheated on you and Robert was there for you to pick up the pieces. Now you’re just going to throw all that away just to be with Grant?”
“Yes he was my first and it’s pretty hard to forget about you’re first.” Vera was looking at him; she knew he was hiding something. The real reason he broke up with Robert.
“Cut the bull shit, what’s the real reason, I know that isn’t the reason you broke up with him. I can see it in your eyes, you’re hiding something.” Vera stared at Preston.
“That’s the reason, take it or leave it. It’s up to you.” Preston crossed his arms and stared back at Vera. He wasn’t going to tell her.
“Fine don’t tell me, by the way I’m leaving back tomorrow. So whenever you come back to school call me, and I can tell you when it is a good time to pick up your things.” Vera said as she got up from the chair and hugged Preston. “And I’m really glad you’re ok.” She walked to the door and opened it.
“Thanks Vera and I will call you when I get back.” Preston waved good bye to her as she walked out. Preston place his face in his palms, she wasn’t going to make it any easier on him. She was going to end up finding out the truth and she was going to tell Robert. Once he finds out, he is going to come back and he won’t be able to tell him no. Then something horrible was going to happen to him and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself when that happened. No matter what happens he was going to have to keep the truth to himself.
