The day after his uncle’s funeral Robert went downstairs to find his mom and dad talking in the kitchen. It was weird to see them in the same room together, but it made him happy.
“Morning mom and dad, what are you two talking about?” Robert asked as he poured himself a cup of coffee and sat at the table with them.
“Samuel Vega is coming by this morning to go over your uncle’s will and I had been thinking about selling the house. I think it’s best we all get a fresh start, this house is filled with too many unpleasant memories.” Tanya said. Robert agreed with his mom on that one, just knowing that his uncle took his own live in this house creep him out.
“I agree, are you going stay here until you can find a new house?”
“No we are going to stay with your dad and abuelita, just until I sell the house and find a new one. I just really don’t want to stay here anymore. So I’m going to need you to pack up your things, unless you don’t mind the movers doing it for you while you’re at school.”
“No I can get it all packed up before I leave on Saturday, it will give me something to do. I don’t really have plans for the week anyway. Well besides going with Nora and Vince to the ultrasound appointment tomorrow. I bet they are excited to finally find out what they are having, I know I am.” Robert smiled, Tanya was glad he was starting to get back to his old self again. She hated seeing him depressed all the time.
“Yeah I bet they are and then we can finally start spoiling our first grandchild.” Cristian said as he reached for Tanya’s hand and looked deeply into her eyes. Robert watched them; he could see the love between them and how over the years it hadn’t changed, even after years apart the love was still there. He thought he was going to have that with Preston, but he was sadly mistaken. He let Preston’s words play again in his head ‘I don’t love you anymore.’ All the anger he thought he had suppressed came rushing back. He looked at his cup and pushed it away from him. It went flying off the table and crashed onto the floor. He watched as it smashed into pieces and coffee spilled all over the floor. His parents looked at him he could see they were shocked at his actions. Robert sighed as he started to pick up the pieces and clean up the coffee.
“Robert what is wrong?” Cristian asked.
“Sorry I just misjudged my strength that’s all,” Robert said as he took his seat again.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Tanya asked.
“Yes mom I’m fine, I’m just going to go up to my room and start packing.” Robert got up from the table and walked back upstairs. He went to Nora’s room and knocked on her door. She opened the door and let him in; she had already started to pack.
“So I take it you know mom is selling the house?”
“Yeah I’m glad she is, we could all use a fresh start.”
“So you excited for tomorrow, you finally find out what you’re having?”
“Yeah but I think Vince is more excited. I think he is hoping for a boy.”
“What are you hoping for?” Robert asked as he sat on the bed.
“To tell you the truth it doesn’t matter to me, just as long as the baby is healthy.”
“Oh come on I don’t believe that for a second. I bet your hoping for a girl.”
“No you’re hoping for a girl. You just want another girl that you can protect.”
“Hum you might have a point there, so you have any names picked out yet?”
“No not yet, Vince wants to wait until we know for sure what we are having.” Nora could see that there was something on Robert’s mind. “What’s wrong Robert and don’t give me that crap that nothing is wrong either.” Robert picked up one of Nora’s stuffed animals off her bed and started to pick at the invisible lint off. He hated that he couldn’t hide his emotions in front of Nora.
“I just had been thinking about Preston that’s all.”
“So what did he tell you yesterday?” Robert dropped the stuffed animal and looked at Nora with confusions.
What are you talking about; I haven’t seen nor talked to Preston since the day he broke up with me.”
“But he stopped by yesterday and had asked me where you were.” Nora said. He must have stopped by when he and Chloe were talking. Crap Robert thought he must think Chloe and him are dating. No wonder he didn’t stick around.
“Well he never talked to me; he must have seen me with Chloe and decided not to talk to me.”
“So he thinks Chloe is your new girlfriend?”
“Yeah I think so and I’m pretty sure Vera told him that as well.”
“Why don’t you just tell him the truth? For all you know he could have broken up with Grant and came here in hopes of getting back together with you.” Robert knew Nora could be right, but he just didn’t want to set himself up for disappointment.
You know what I think you’re right, in fact I’m going to call right now.” Robert pulled out his phone and dialed Preston’s number.
Preston was woken up by his phone; he reached over to see who was calling him. When he saw Robert’s name on his screen he threw his phone back on the nightstand. He knew why he was calling and didn’t care to hear about how his new whore is carrying his child. He rolled over to lie on his back and stared at the ceiling. He was so angry and frustrated with himself. He let too much time pass by; he should have just told Robert the truth. Together they could have figured something out. Now it was too late, he was with someone else and they were going to start a family together. Preston got up from his bed and got ready for a day of doing nothing but moping around the house.
Robert tried calling Preston three times before he just gave up and looked at Nora.
“He isn’t answering his phone, he must still be asleep. I will try again later.” Robert said.
“Do you want me to try and see if he will answer my phone call?” it didn’t matter what phone Robert called from, it was clear that Preston didn’t want to talk to him.
“No that’s fine,” there was a knock on the door and their dad walked in.
“Hey kiddos, your mom said she wants you two downstairs, Mr. Vega is here.” They both nodded and got up to follow him to the living room. They both sat next to Tanya and stared at Mr. Vega, out of all the people at the law firm, he was a pretty decent guy. Robert never had any problems with him.
“Well first off I just want to say how sorry I am about your loss, Antonio was a good man.” Mr. Vega said. Robert snorted at the last part; his uncle was anything but a good man. His mom heard him, elbowed him the rib and frowned at him. “Ok so we are here to go over Antonio Castillo’s will. There really isn’t much to go over; basically everything goes to Tanya Castillo except for the partnership in the law firm. That was left to Robert Castillo as he was going to take over when it came time for Antonio to retire. Now Tanya if you just sign everywhere there is an x, I can set everything up for you.” Mr. Vega handed Tanya some papers and pointed where she needed to sign. She took the papers and started to sign her name. Then Mr. Vega turned to Robert and said, “So since you are not legally a lawyer yet you have two choices. We can hold your spot at the firm until you pass your bar or you could sell your partnership. You don’t have to choose right now I will give you time to think about it.” Robert didn’t have to think about it, he wanted nothing to do with that law firm.
“I’ll sell it,” Robert said.
“Are you sure you don’t want to think about it?” Mr. Vega asked.
“No sir I don’t, just tell me where to sign.” Robert said.
“Well I don’t have it with me, didn’t really think you would sell. But come see me later on in the week and I will have it ready for you.”
“Ok I will,” Mr. Vega finished up going over the will and left.
“So you’re not even going to try out working there before selling?” Tanya asked.
“No mom, I’m just not a big fan of some of the clients they have. The only one I would regret not having is Vera’s dad, but maybe one day when I have my own firm I could get him as my client.” Robert said.
“Well I’m glad you’re selling, you don’t need to get mixed up with those types of people.” Robert smiled at him mom.
“Thanks mom, well I’m going to go start packing my stuff, if you need me.”
“Wait Robert before you go, your mother and I have something we want to tell you kids.”
“Ok what is it?” Nora asked.
“Well your mother and I decided to get married; it’s not going to be something big just in front of a justice of the peace, you kids, your friends and your abuelita.”
“When,” Robert asked.
“On Friday,”
“So soon, don’t get me wrong, I’m proud that you two will finally get married. But aren’t you worried about what people will say?”
“No I don’t care; I know I’m meant to be with your father.” Robert nodded his head and hugged them. Tanya could tell his mind was elsewhere, one minute he was fine and then the next he became sad when they mentioned getting married. Then she noticed his pendent and saw he was still carrying around the ring he was going to give to Preston. He was just torturing himself by keeping it, he must still believe he can get Preston back.
“Well then I guess we will be having a wedding on Friday. Well if that is all I’m going upstairs.”
“Yes mijo that is all and are you sure you’re ok?”
“I’m fine mom, don’t worry about me.” Robert got up, forced a smile and went back upstairs. He walked into his room and shut his door. Everything was working out for everyone else but him and it just wasn’t fair. He looked around his room; it was going to take him all week to pack. He walked over to his bookcase and started with his books. He grabbed a box and started pulling his books off the shelf. An hour had passed and he was almost done with his books, he reached up for the last ones on top and had one fall off. When he picked it up a piece of folded paper fell out. He put the book in the box and picked up the paper. He opened the paper and read it, ‘I Antonio has decided to join my daughter Rose, and you have all been a great disappointment to me. This is why being with my daughter is best; she was the only good and perfect thing in my life. I leave you with one more thing to think about. Know that I curse each and every one of you, and you will never know true happiness, Antonio.’ Robert read the letter one more time. He couldn’t believe his uncle had left his suicide note in his room, but he was glad he did. His mom and Nora didn’t have to read what his final words were. He got up and went to his bathroom, he tore the letter up into small pieces and threw them in the toilet and flushed it. He went back to packing and spent all day doing that.
The next morning Robert was woken up by Nora shaking him to wake up.
“Ah dammit Nora, I swear if you weren’t pregnant I would smother you with my pillow.” Robert said as he sat up in his bed, stretched his arms out and yawned. He looked over at Nora then back to the clock. It was already noon, he hadn’t felt like he had slept that long. “Crap I didn’t know I was out that long. Why didn’t anyone wake me sooner?” Robert said as he got out of his bed and walked over to his closet.
“We did try to, but you just wouldn’t wake up. I was going to try the ice cold water method, but I was finally able to wake you.” Then Robert noticed the bucket of water on the floor, he would have been pissed if she had poured it on him.
“What time is your appointment?” Robert picked up the bucket and went into the bathroom to dump it.
“In an hour, so hurry up and get ready. We will be waiting for you downstairs.” Robert nodded, grabbed his clothes and went into the bathroom to shower. Robert shut the door behind him and started to remove his shirt, then stopped when he saw the ring hanging off the chain of his pendent. Most days he hardly notices it, but today it was sticking out like a sore thumb. He took off the chain and slipped the ring off, placed it on his palm and stared at it. All he felt was heartache. He wanted to get rid of it, but couldn’t bring himself to do so. He knew he was just torturing himself by wearing it around his neck, it might as well have been a noose. It sure did feel like one some days, he placed the ring back on the chain and finished undressing and jumped in the shower. When he was done he walked downstairs to meet everyone and then leave.
They were waiting in the exam room for Dr. Gold to show up. Robert was pacing around the room until he was told to stop.
“Robert would you please stop pacing already; your making me dizzy just watching you.” Nora said.
“Sorry,” Robert sat back down in his seat and started to tap his foot.
“Oh my god really, what is wrong with you?” Vince asked. Robert stopped tapping of his foot.
“Can’t I be excited about what sex the baby is going to be?”
“Well yeah, but do you have to be making so much noise?”
“No and I’m sorry I will try to sit still.” Robert said. Even though that wasn’t the real reason he was doing all that stuff. In less than two weeks he would find out if Chloe was pregnant. He was nervous and excited at the same time. He has always wanted kids, but he also wanted it to be with someone he loved. He never thought he would ever find that person and just gave up on the idea of ever having kids. Then he met Preston and everything changed, but now they weren’t together anymore. He was about to have a child with his lesbian friend who he only loved as a sister. Who also oddly somewhat resemble the girl version of Preston? At least now he could possibility find out how his and Preston’s child would look like if it was possible for them to have one together. Robert snapped out of his deep thoughts when Dr. Gold walked in.
“Hey Nora, how are you feeling today?” Dr. Gold asked.
“I’m doing good, just excited about finding out what we are having.” Nora said.
“Ok well let’s get started then.” Robert watched as the sonogram showed up on the screen, he could hear the baby’s heartbeat loud and clear.
“So have you two thought about any names yet?”
“No we wanted to wait until we knew for sure on the sex of the baby.” Vince said.
“Well it looks like you better start thinking about girl names, say hello to your baby girl.” Dr. Gold said as he got a better view of the baby.
“Oh my god we are having a baby girl, just what I was hoping for.” Vince said and Nora looked at him.
“I thought you were hoping for a boy?” Nora asked.
“No I just said that because that is what most guys say. I want a daughter who is going to be the splitting image of you. I want to be able to say I am loved by the two world’s most beautiful girls.” Vince said as he cupped Nora’s face and kissed her. Then he got down on one knee and pulled out a small black box from his pocket.
“Nora Castillo, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife.” Vince opened the box and a small diamond ring sat inside of it.
“Yes absolutely, I would want nothing more than to be your wife. Then he pulled it out and grabbed Nora’s hand and slipped it on, kissing her one more time. Robert could see tears slowly slip out, he was happy for them, but he also felt envious towards them. He slowly slipped out of the room; he needed to get out of there. Being in there wasn’t helping him with the heartache he already felt.
Preston was sitting in his room when his phone went off; he picked it up and saw it was a text message from Nora.
“Hey Preston I just wanted to tell you that we found out that we are having a girl. I’m not sure when I’m going to have my baby shower, but I hope you can come.” He was glad they were having a girl, but it made him sad that he couldn’t go to her baby shower. He couldn’t be in the same room as Robert.
“Congrats, I wish I could go to your baby shower. I just don’t think it would be a good idea since me and your brother broke up. It would just be so awkward.” Preston texted back.
“No it’s not going to be, you just have to come.” He knew she wasn’t going to give up very easily.
“I’m sorry Nora but I just can’t come. Just tell me what you want and I will be sure to get you something great,”
“Fine be like that and don’t come, you can get me whatever you want I don’t care.” Great Preston thought to himself, he had upset her.
“Ok well congrats again and let me know when you two have finally picked out a name.”
“Ok bye Preston.” Preston threw his phone on the bed, he felt like a huge jerk now. It’s not Nora’s fault he broke up with Robert and just decided he can’t go anywhere he was. Maybe he should take her out to lunch, so the two of them can hang out together. He knew how much fun they had together. That is what he would do to make it up to her.
