The last few weeks of school had dragged by slowly. Preston was ready to go home, being at the same school as Robert was making it harder on him to avoid him. Preston was almost done packing up all his stuff, they were leaving tomorrow afternoon. Of course that was probably not going to happen as Xavier hadn’t finished his packing. He and Vera were out on one last date before heading home. He was glad they finally started dating, but they were acting like they weren’t going to see each other again. Preston placed the last of his things in the box, now all he had left was his clothes. That could wait until tomorrow, he needed a coffee break. He grabbed his wallet and walked to the bus stop that stopped near the school, and then he walked to Bruegger’s. Before he walked in he saw Grant walking his way.
“Hey Grant long time no see.” Preston said as he gave him a hug.
“I know I was thinking the same thing the other day. So how have you been?”
“I have been better just taking it one day at a time, how about you?”
“Pretty good, excited for graduation tomorrow, are you coming?”
“No sorry I just want to go home as soon as I can.”
“That’s alright," Grant looked around before looking back at Preston. "So I take it you never got back with Robert? I figures that with his uncle out of the picture, you would have told him everything and you two would get back together.” Preston let out a sigh as he looked at the ground, then back at Grant.
“How about we go inside and I can tell you the whole story.” Grant nodded his head and they went inside. Preston grabbed a table by the window, while Grant ordered their coffee.
Robert had just finished packing everything that was his in the apartment. He and Chloe were going to his new house that his parents just moved into. He had told them the situation with Chloe and was more than happy to take her in. They were also excited to be getting two more grandchild. Last week they had found out that Chloe was carrying twins. Robert was hoping for a girl and boy, but he still had another two months before he could find out. Chloe was going to take off next semester to have the babies and agreed to stay with his parents. She loved how his family opened their home to her and treated her like she was family. Robert was hoping she would change her mind and be part of the twins lives. He knew that once they were old enough, they would ask about their mother and he didnt want to say she didn't want them.I'll thhink about is all she said to him, and it was all he could ask for right now.
Everyone loved Chloe but Vera; he still hadn’t told her the truth about everything. He was going to do that right now, he told Chloe he was going over to Vera’s to talk to her. When he knocked on her door, he was greeted by Xavier.
“Hey Robert, were you looking for Vera?”
“Yeah but if you two are busy I can talk to her later.”
“Not at all, she is in the kitchen.” Xavier moved aside to let him in and led him to the kitchen.
“Hey Vera,” Robert said as he sat down at the table.
“Hey Robert what can I do for you?”
“I was wondering if I could talk to you.”
“Yeah sure,” she said as she joined him at the table.
“Well I will leave you two alone.” Xavier said.
“You don’t have to leave Xavier.” Robert said.
“No it’s fine, I have to go back and finish packing anyway.” Xavier kissed Vera and walked out the door.
“So what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?”
“Chloe is pregnant and she is having twins.”
“What, how long have you known and why am I just finding out?”
“A few months and I just didn’t want anyone to know until we left the school.”
“So what are you going to marry her now?” Robert laughed; he had forgotten she didn’t know that Chloe was a lesbian. “What’s so funny, there is nothing funny about what I just said.”
“I’m laughing because I never told you that me and Chloe were never going out. I’m not really her type.”
“What do you mean you are not her type?”
“I mean that Chloe is a lesbian and the only thing between us is friendship.”
“But she is pregnant, how the hell did she get pregnant?”
“That my friend was just a drunken night we both had and we couldn’t even recall what happen that night.”
“So you two never went out?”
“Nope we have been nothing but friends, who happen to be having twins.”
“Oh my god, crap I messed up big time.” Robert crocked his brow and looked at her with confusion.
“What do you mean you messed up?”
“I told Preston that you two were dating. Then when your uncle died, he wanted to talk to you about wanting to get back together. He went looking for you but came back quick and said he had to go. He never said why or what had happened when he talked to you.” Robert already knew that Preston thought they were dating, but if he had gone to the tree house, he must have heard Chloe telling him that she could be pregnant. That must be the real reason he has not been returning his calls.
“Yeah I know about that, but I think he must have heard Chloe telling me that she could be pregnant and that was the reason he took off so quickly.” Robert ran his fingers over his face, this whole time he thought that Preston didn’t want anything to do with him, but in reality he wanted to get back together. Things just kept getting in the way of them being together. He had to go find him and tell him the truth.
“I’m going to go look for Preston and I’m going to go tell him the truth.” Robert got up and left Vera’s place and headed to the one place he knew where to find Preston. Robert parked his car in the parking lot of Bruegger’s. He walked to the door and saw Preston sitting at a table by the window, he was alone and it was his chance to finally talk to him. This was the first time he had seen him since they broke up and he still managed to take his breath away. Robert reached for the door but stopped when he saw Grant walking to the table with two cups of coffee. When he saw the smile on Preston’s face he felt his heart drop into his stomach. Vera forgot to mention that Preston was still seeing Grant and that smile he had on his face could only mean he was happy with him. He ruined their relationship the first time; he wasn’t going to do it a second time. He backed away from the door and walked back to his car and headed back to his apartment.
“Here you go and I got you a brownie as well.” Grant said as he handed Preston his coffee and brownie. Preston’s eyes lit up and he smiled when he saw the brownie; he just absolutely loved the brownies from here.
“Thanks,” Preston said as he dug into the brownie.
“So tell me what happened?” Preston stopped eating and took a sip of coffee to wash the brownie down.
“Well when I heard about Robert’s uncle I just finally thought we could finally be together. Or at least so I thought, when I went to Robert’s house to talk to him I ended up over hearing him and his girlfriend talking about her being pregnant. When I heard that I just knew he wasn’t going to break up with her to be with me. He would never let his child grow up without him around.” Preston went back to eating his brownie.
“Damn I’m sorry, but why not try, you never know until you try.” Preston knew he had a point, but he didn’t think his heart could take it if he got rejected.
“I don’t want to put my heart out there and get rejected by him; I don’t think my heart could take it.”
“Sometimes you just have to put yourself out there for the ones you love.” Preston let Grant’s words sink into his head and knew he was right.
“I’ll think about.” Grant knew Preston well enough he had no intentions on talking to Robert, he just might have to take matters into his own hands.
Robert was walking back to his apartment when he was stopped by Vera outside of his apartment.
“So how did…” she said but stopped when she saw the look on his face.
“Why didn’t you tell me he was still seeing Grant?” Robert said as placed his back on the wall and slides down to the floor. He places his face in the palms of his hands, and then run his fingers through his hair. “Why is it every time we try to see each other something is always there to stop us? It’s not fair; I have always tried to be a good person. Why does everything always have to go wrong for me?” it was breaking Vera’s heart hearing how upset he was. He didn’t deserve this nor did Preston; nothing was working out for them. She knew they were meant for each other, but fate wasn’t making it easy for them.
“I’m sorry Robert, I didn’t know.”
"I should be the one that is sorry, you guys told me i gave up to easily and i wanted to believe that i didn't. I was being stubborn because I was hurting and i felt betrayed. now that i look back, had i tried harder we would be together. I was stupid in believing that he didn't love me, because why else would he had tried to come back to me if he wasn't truly happy with Grant. i just think he is settling with him because he thinks i'm taken and would never break up with Chloe." Robert threw his keys at the wall in front of him. "Ugh life is really unfair." Vera sat next to Robert and hugged him.
"Come on now, you cant give up hope just quite yet. Sometimes things work out when you least expect them too. so don't be so quick to give up, i know things will work out for you two. it might not be now or even next week, but it will work out. So don't give up hope." Robert nodded his head, got up and helped her up. he picked up his keys from the floor.
"Thanks Vera, well i'm going to see if Chloe needs help. we are leaving early in the morning tomorrow. i will see you later." Robert hugged her and walked back inside.
Vera watched as he went inside, one way or another someone was going to have to help them make thing right between those two.
