On the fifth day Leo disappeared, I got a video from some random number.
At first glance, it looked like a huge outdoor terrace.
The video seemed to be shot from way across from the terrace.
That orange-ish background looked kind of familiar.
Before I could click play to get a better look, the same number called me.
It‘s Leo.
His voice was barely containing his excitement.
"Noelle, I told you I never slept with Roxy."
"I found the hotel where we stayed, but unfortunately someone had trashed the security camera on that terrace."
"It took forever, but I managed to buy this original footage from some photography hobbyist."
"Those photos and videos were all made with AI software by Roxy's cousin—that blonde punk. You remember him, right?"
The blonde punk?
That guy who almost knocked me over that day?
"Noelle, I never cheated on you. Can we please not get divorced..."
My grip tightened on the phone. I pushed thoughts of the punk aside.
My finger hovered over the video for a couple seconds, but I didn't play it.
I kept my voice totally calm.
"Leo, does it only count as cheating me if you literally sleeping with her?"
"Even if this video proves you're innocent, what's the point?"
"When you gave my dress to Roxy, did you think about how that would hurt me?"
"When you left me standing on the curb to go play superhero for her, did you think about how that looked?"
"When you took her on that trip and let her post all those cutesy couple photos with you, did you think about me?"
"Hell, you brought her to your parents' house and let her sit in my spot. You said you were 'making a point,' but it felt like you were just trying to humiliate me!"
Dead silence on the other end for what felt like forever.
"I'm so sorry, Noelle."
His voice got all shaky, like he was fighting back tears.
"I know that whatever I say, I can't take back how badly I hurt you."
"You're right—the way I handled all this was selfish and stupid. I totally ignored how you'd feel."
"But please, you gotta believe me—I never meant to actually hurt you. And I sure as hell never wanted our marriage to end."
Listening to him break down, I felt... nothing.
Sure, wounds heal. But the scars? Those are permanent. We could never go back.
