"I seriously don't get what's going on in Leo's head. He's got the real deal right in front of him, but he's off playing house with some knockoff. Tell me,girl, does he actually love you or not?"
Nina's words sobered me up instantly. No wonder I felt that weird, hazy familiarity when I first met Roxy.
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Who knows. Maybe the knockoff just cries on cue and makes him feel like a man.”
My headache throbbed behind my temples, dull and relentless.
Nina drove me home.
She was worried about me feeling sick, so she drove super carefully the whole way.
"I finished drafting the divorce papers. When are you planning to bring this up with Leo?"
"Mid-month. He'll definitely be back for dinner with his grandpa."
Every month without fail, we'd go back to the Hartwell family estate for dinner with grandpa.
Divorcing Leo wasn't some easy thing—I needed to use this time to cover all my bases.
Roxy hasn’t exactly keeping a low profile.
She was posting multiple times a day on Instagram.
Breakfast with the CEO, working late into the night together, standing atop the city's tallest building looking down at the world.
First time skydiving, first time experiencing the real underwater world, first time seeing the northern lights up close.
This business trip was giving her experiences and thrills she could never afford on her own.
Her joy was practically bursting off the screen.
It was me who used to be the one doing all those things with Leo.
Now my colleagues looked at me with careful pity in their eyes.
Leo was basically letting Roxy rub it in my face like this.
It was brutal.
Nina had been practically living with me these past few days, helping the legal team sort out the financial split with Leo.
That day, she came storming into my office clutching a manila envelope.
"Noelle, Leo Hartwell has gone way too fucking far!"
I was signing some business documents and looked up to see Nina about to explode with rage.
"What happened? Is he back?"
Nina slammed the envelope down on my desk. A memory card and several photos of Leo and Roxy in a hotel couples' suite spilled out.
He was shirtless. Her lipstick left smeared red marks across his chest.
“The man didn’t come back—but his scandal sure did.”
My straight shoulders slowly slumped as my heart felt like it was being crushed, throbbing with pain.
With trembling fingers, I picked up the memory card and plugged it into my backup computer.
At dusk, on the hotel's rooftop terrace, Leo was cupping Roxy's face, gazing at her with complete adoration.
Behind them, the sky was painted orange-red by the setting sun.
The sunset was like silk, lovers embracing—it looked like a beautiful painting spread across the horizon.
Just as they were about to kiss, I snapped the laptop shut.
My voice was shaking uncontrollably.
"Who sent this?"
"Came by courier. Reception signed for it this morning."
I took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.
I carefully put the photos back in the envelope and locked it in my drawer before regaining my composure.
"Don't spread this around. Find out who sent it."
"Who else could it be? That shameless Roxy, trying to climb her way up!"
The footage looked more like a hidden camera than a setup.
Whatever. Didn't matter.
What mattered was that Leo was tainted now.
Tomorrow was mid-month. Time to end this whole mess.
