"But she's not me! Don't use me as an excuse to mess around and then blame me for it."
"Look, I don't doubt you used to love me. But I'm thirty now—not some fresh-faced twenty-something. I'm tough and demanding, not all sweet and nurturing like other women."
"Leo, just admit it. You don't love me the way you think you do anymore. You're just stuck because of duty and obligation."
"Since the feelings aren't real anymore, why force it?Just let me go."
With every word I said, Leo's face got colder.
He stared straight into my eyes, like he was searching for some sign I was lying, some hint this could still be fixed.
But my gaze was steady and clear—no wavering at all.
He gripped my wrists even tighter, almost begging.
"Noelle, that's just what you think—it doesn't speak for me. Please don't treat divorce like some joke."
"I can explain everything..."
"It's not my plan to take her on that business trip. She was crying, begging me, saying she'd get destroyed at the office."
"All those activities she did—that was the clients entertaining her. I wasn't even involved."
"This whole thing is my fault. I'm sorry, Noelle. I'm so sorry..."
"I was just trying to teach you a lesson on this trip, make you realize that as your husband, I needed a wife who was more gentle and understanding. I never meant for it to go this far."
I frowned and yanked my red, swollen wrists out of his grip with a cold laugh.
"Sorry, you've got the wrong girl. I'll never kiss ass to make some man happy."
Then I pulled a divorce agreement.
"I tried to make the asset division as fair as possible. If you agreed, just sign it."
"If you have problems with it, I'll negotiate with you again."
Leo couldn't handle it. He let out this defeated laugh.
"Fine, if you can't change, whatever. But I'm not signing off on this divorce."
"And I'm gonna find proof that I never touched Roxy!"
"Good luck with that. I'm filing either way."
Leo's eyes went red. He looked totally stunned.
He couldn't figure out how we'd gotten here—I'd loved him so much, he'd humbled himself to apologize, so why was I still dead set on ending things?
Leo was about to say something else when Dad slammed his hand on the table and stood up.
He shot Leo this look of total disappointment and stormed off to his study.
Moria was already sobbing, covering her mouth with her hands, tears streaming through her fingers.
"Leo, Noelle... how could you do this to us... how could Hartwell family have this kind of scandal..."
Just five years, and our business marriage, our lavish wedding, had a bad ending.
All that love and trust we used to have—gone.
I watched it all go down feeling totally numb inside, emotions all over the place.
We'd been talking about having a baby this year...
