I didn't go back to our house. Instead, I went to my own place.
Dad's been living there since he retired.
I swing by to check on him every few days.
When I told my dad I was divorcing Leo, he was pretty shocked at first, but then he said the decision was mine to make.
He went straight to his room and secretly called Leo's dad.
Usually when Leo and I got into it, our dads would get on the phone and try to patch things up between us.
But this was different.
When my dad saw me coming home from work every single night, he knew shit had hit the fan.
He stopped going on his daily walks, quit drinking his afternoon coffeer, and spent all day rambling about how good Leo had always been to him.
I was getting tired of it.
"If he's so great to you, how come he hasn't answered any of the ten calls you've made to him?"
Dad didn't know what to say. He just gave me this helpless look.
"He's... he's probably a wreck knowing you want to leave him. Probably hiding out somewhere feeling sorry for himself."
I couldn't help but laugh at Dad trying to make excuses for him.
"Dad, you and his parents can quit trying to fix this. I'm getting divorced with him."
"But don't worry—this won't screw up your friendship with his folks."
"You always liked that kid so much. Aren't you bummed? No regrets?"
I patted dad's shoulder.
"Once we're divorced, I'll ignore him completely. Give me a week and I'll be over it."
Dad's lips moved like he wanted to say something, but he held back.
Finally he shuffled away, muttering under his breath.
"Don't know if pushing you to be this tough was such a good idea..."
Being in control of your own life? Hell yeah, that's the right call.
Leo wasn't picking up Dad's calls because he'd handed his phone over to some tech guys to figure out where those photos came from.
His team had flown out to that hotel where they'd been on the business trip.
They'd been there three days now.
I got all this from Nina.
She'd been going to Hartwell Corp every day trying to get Leo to sign the divorce papers.
And since that disaster of a family dinner, Roxy hadn't shown at Hartwell Corp once.
