Aria sensed it before she saw it.

At the far side of the grand hall stood a man she didn’t recognize — young, handsome, confident. His eyes swept over her body the moment she entered the room.
Aria stiffened instantly.
Dominic leaned close, whispering at her ear. “Do you see him?”
“Yes.”
“He’s one of my new business partners. Young blood. Arrogant. He’s curious about my wife.”
Aria’s pulse quickened. “And you’re allowing him to be?”
Dominic’s voice was low, controlled. “I want to see something.”
Her eyes narrowed. “You’re testing me.”
He smiled darkly. “You’ve surrendered your body. You’ve surrendered your love. But have you surrendered your pride, Aria?”
The man — Viktor — approached, confident, smiling politely as if nothing dangerous hung in the air.
“Mrs. Moretti,” Viktor greeted. “You’re even more beautiful in person.”
Aria forced a polite smile. She could feel Dominic watching every breath she took.
Viktor’s gaze was bold. “I must say, your husband is a very lucky man.”
Dominic stepped closer, wrapping his arm tightly around Aria’s waist. His touch looked protective — but Aria knew it was possessive. Territorial.
“Luck had nothing to do with it,” Dominic said smoothly. “What’s mine stays mine. Always.”
The conversation continued, shallow on the surface, deadly underneath.
Aria’s skin burned as she felt Dominic’s hand subtly tighten on her waist every time Viktor’s gaze dipped too low.
This was the test.
Dominic wanted to see her resist temptation.
He wanted to feel her choose him—again and again—even when no danger was present.
And Aria knew it.
When Viktor finally walked away, Dominic’s lips brushed her ear.
“You passed.”
Aria exhaled, heart racing. “Do you doubt me that much?”
He smiled coldly. “I don’t doubt your love. I doubt human nature.”
His voice dropped into a dark promise. “But I’ll always give you the chance to prove me wrong. Over and over.”
She turned to face him fully, her voice sharper. “And if one day I fail your test?”
His smile never wavered. “Then I’ll break you. And rebuild you again.”
Later That Night — Private Quarters
There was no sex. No release. Only silence between them.
Dominic sat in his chair, glass in hand, staring at her with burning intensity.
Aria sat across from him, matching his gaze.
No words.
Just dangerous, unspoken tension.
