She felt it before she saw it.
The shift in the air.
Like static on skin, like thunder pressed behind glass.
Dominic had done something.
She didn’t know what.
Didn’t ask.
Didn’t have to.
She felt it in the silence of the penthouse.
In the way the doorman avoided her eyes.
In the heaviness that hung between the marble floors and diamond-cut rage.
He was hunting again.
And this time, the prey had her father’s blood.
She found him in his private study — the one she never entered without knocking.
The door was open.
He was standing behind the desk, hands braced on the wood, knuckles red and split.
She didn’t flinch.
She stepped in quietly and closed the door behind her.
“You found out,” she said.
His eyes flicked up. Dark. Wild. Distant.
“I always knew your father was a monster,” Dominic murmured. “I didn’t know he taught you to love your cage.”
Her heart twisted. “I never loved it.”
“You lived in it long enough to stop fighting.”
She swallowed. “Maybe I was waiting for someone to open the door.”
His jaw clenched. “I did more than open it, Aria. I broke it. I set it on fire.”
She stepped closer. “And now?”
He stared at her. The air between them pulsed with heat.
“Now I’m burning everything that tried to put you back inside.”
Silence.
Thick. Heavy. Charged.
She looked down at his hands. Blood on his knuckles. Ash in his eyes.
“You’re scaring me, Dominic.”
He stepped closer. “Good.”
She slapped him.
Not hard. Not to hurt.
Just to feel something real.
His jaw flexed. He didn’t move.
She breathed hard. “I don’t want to be saved through violence.”
“You were bought with it.”
“I want to be loved in silence. In peace. In choice.”
He reached up, hand grazing her cheek — but stopping before touching.
“And what if I can’t love you without setting fire to everything that threatens you?”
She looked up at him.
“Then maybe I have to become fire too.”
They didn’t kiss.
Didn’t touch.
But the space between them cracked open, wide and waiting.
Later that night, Aria sat on the edge of the bed.
She pulled out the black envelope.
Opened it.
Inside was one photo.
Of her. Standing in the café.
With Matteo.
Her fingers trembled.
Someone had been watching.
And they weren’t targeting Dominic.
They were targeting her from the inside out.
