Dominic didn’t move for a full minute.
The photo sat on his desk—silent. Still.
But it screamed in his mind.
Aria.
A café.
A timestamp from two days ago.
Not blurry. Not distant.
Targeted.
Someone had followed her.
Someone had gotten close enough to capture the tilt of her chin, the soft lock of hair falling across her cheek, the hand curled tightly on her lap like she was bracing for impact.
He stared until his chest physically hurt.
Then he made the call.
“Luca,” he said tightly, “I need every pair of eyes on the ground in Brooklyn. Start at Venice & Vine. Work backwards. I want the original photographer. I want the buyer. I want the bastard who thought he could get that close.”
A pause.
Then a softer question.
“Has she contacted you?”
Dominic closed his eyes. “No.”
It was the most honest word he’d spoken in days.
When Luca hung up, Dominic stood.
His office felt too small. Too polished. Too far away from wherever she was right now.
He walked to the windows, but even the skyline mocked him.
The woman he loved had been watched, possibly hunted—and he hadn’t known.
Too far. Too late.
He pulled open a drawer and stared at the leather journal she’d once left in his car.
A doodle in the corner.
A random note.
A list of songs she never finished.
He clenched it in his fist.
Whoever took that photo hadn’t just followed her.
They had sent a message.
“We see her. We can take her. You can’t stop us.”
Dominic turned back toward the room and started moving.
One hand reached for his jacket.
The other for his gun.
If they wanted a message, he’d send one back.
But his would be in blood.
