I woke up with my arms and legs wrapped around his body and a smile instantly spread across my face. My head was resting on his chest while my legs were entangled with his.
I looked up at his handsome, chiseled face, he was only wearing his black boxer briefs leaving me to appreciate his naked chest.
I slowly pulled myself out of his hold and went to the bathroom to freshen up. I brushed my teeth and took an hour-long, relaxing bath when my fingers started to shrivel up only then I stepped out of the tub. I wrapped a towel around myself before stepping out of the bathroom.
My eyebrows pinched together as I saw Nikolai sitting on the edge of my bed, he was dressed up in a black tuxedo, and his hair was still wet hinting that he had just taken a shower. I think I just spent a lot of time in the shower.
"Nikolai..."
He looked up from his cell phone and his lips curved into a slight smile. He patted beside him on the bed and I noticed a simple white dress.
"Wear this," he ordered.
"Why? Are we going somewhere?"
"Yes, and we only have an hour."
Something about this didn't feel right. "Is everything alright?"
He got up, walked toward me and he placed a quick kiss on my lips. "Dress up."
He strolled out of my bedroom after that, I frowned and picked up the dress. It wasn't anything flashy, just a white short summer dress. I shook all the negative thoughts away and got dressed.
I straightened my hair, put on nude pink makeup, and paired the dress with the white Louboutins Nikolai had bought for me along with the dress. 1
I descended the stairs and looked around. The house looked empty, there was not a single person in sight, not even Grace and it was eerily quiet for nine in the morning.
I heard some voice coming from the foyer before Scott came into my view. He stilled as he watched me and then shook his head.
"Come on, let's go," he ordered.
"Where?"
"Save your questions for Niko," he snapped rudely. ↑
Keeping my mouth shut, I sat in the backseat of Scott's car as he drove us somewhere. He stopped outside the office of the City Clerk - NYC Marriage Bureau. Why are we-
Suddenly it all made sense...
His tuxedo, this white dress, and the hints he had been giving me all along.
"I don't want a submissive, mob wife. I think I like disrespectful little brats more."
"By the end of this week, you will be a married woman, Evangeline."
"You are good at it."
"At what?"
"Being a wife."
"Would you rather lose me forever or get tied to me for the rest of your life?" (1
"Do you always talk this much in the morning because I need to know what I am getting myself into"
"Marry me..."
"I'd love to"
Suddenly all of his words made sense. I know he was planning something but this... I thought he was joking. I don't know if this was what I wanted. He can't be serious. "Scott, what is this?" I asked
Scott placed a hand on the small of my back as he led me inside. The white dress I was wearing made sense now, it was for marriage, my marriage.
Some girls often fantasized about getting married, planning the perfect day, and buying the perfect dress. I never thought about marriage before, I have never given it a thought but now that I did. I realized that I want a big wedding, I want to wear the perfect dress, I want to walk down the aisle toward the man I love, and I want to exchange handwritten vows. I want a fairytale wedding.
Nikolai came into my view, he was busy talking to another man. I swallowed, and goosebumps rose all over my body.
"That's the bride?" the man asked, gesturing toward me.
Nikolai grabbed my hand and pulled me closer to him, wrapping an arm around my waist. "Yes..." 1
His soldiers were standing all around the lobby of the hall. The people were escorted out of wherever Nikolai was going.
I felt a lump in my throat but ignored it. We were taken to a private room where our marriage was supposed to happen. I held my breath as Nikolai's hand stroked my back gently, he placed a kiss on the top of my head and I melted into his embrace.
I rested my body against him as he held me closer. I looked around the busybodies. "This isn't how I imagined my wedding to look like..." I whispered mindlessly.
"What?" he asked.
My stomach seemed to rise to my throat. "I never thought I'd get married like this..."
He again placed a kiss on top of my head. "Just get through today and I'll make it up to you, alright, baby girl?" he whispered tenderly, his tone laced with concern and love as if there was another way he would never do this and that melted my heart.
It meant a lot coming from Nikolai Costello. The kind of man he was, he'd never feel bad about forcing anyone into anything but he cared. He cared about me, he cared enough to feel concerned for me.
I have seen men shaking and pissing themselves just when they were standing in his presence and somehow his presence was the only thing in the world that calmed me down.
He pulled me to his front, my back pressed against his chest, his arms wrapped around my waist, and his chin resting on top of my head. I exhaled, releasing some of the tension that had built up in my shoulders. I think I can spend the rest of my life in this man's arms.
An hour later, I was standing outside the office of the City Clerk as a married woman. The hot wind touched my skin, the sunlight blinding me.
I looked down at the big, shiny diamond on my finger. The sunlight reflected through the diamond, my hands were shaking so hard I could barely see them.
I still couldn't believe that I was married. That I, Evangeline Bolton was now Mrs. Nikolai Costello.
Nikolai placed sunglasses over my eyes, dark amusement was clear in his eyes. He seemed happy, relieved, and more confident like all of this was a normal thing for him.
My face turned red as he came closer. He gripped my chin with his thumb and forefinger before he angled my face better so that I could look at him through the sunglasses. "I didn't get to kiss my wife," he said.
Nervous laughter emitted from me and I blushed profusely as he called me his wife. It felt different because now it was true. I was his wife.
He leaned in and I felt myself getting hot under the heat of the sun. "Wait..." my voice shook under pressure. I looked around to see Nikolai's soldiers. "Let's go home first..."
He didn't seem too pleased with my response. His grip on my chin loosened and he gave his head a gentle shake. I weakly smiled up at him before making my way around him and walking to the car.
I settled inside, the car's air conditioner cooling my heated skin. I don't know if it was because of the summer heat or because my whole life had taken a turn and I still have no idea what just happened.
A moment later, Nikolai settled inside the Limousine. He just watched me like he was waiting for me to say something while I was still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I was married to Nikolai Costello, who is supposed to get married to Grace Russell-a don's daughter-tomorrow.
I glanced at his hand and saw the platinum wedding band, not the one that belonged to Grace but the one I had slipped onto his finger inside the marriage Bureau when I uttered the words "I do". He wasn't wearing Grace's ring anymore but mine. They were almost identical, the only difference was that the rings we were wearing had our initials engraved on the inside. He probably got himself the same kind of ring because he didn't want anyone to know about us.
I felt like a dirty little secret.
"Roll up the partition," Nikolai ordered the driver.
The partition smoothly rolled up giving Nikolai and me the privacy we needed.
"Evangeline, say it."
I furrowed my eyebrows, shaking my head. "What?
"Whatever that you're thinking, spit it out," the sharp edge to his voice told me that the good mood he was in a second ago was no longer there.
"Nothing..." I looked out the black-tinted window, avoiding his gaze.
"I'm not fucking playing around. There is something going on in that pretty little head of yours, fucking spit it out."
I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and let out a shaky breath. "Grace... You're getting married to her tomorrow publicly"
"I'm not getting married to her, come on, Evangeline, you're smarter than that. Figure it out."
"Yes, but I need to know what is going to happen tomorrow. I'm not giving myself to you not until you end everything there is with Grace."
I made it clear to him. We may have done a lot of intimate stuff but I had still saved a big part of me that I won't give to him unless I know that he belongs to me and only to me. If there is another woman involved, I won't be a part of this relationship. I won't give myself completely to him not unless he also gives himself completely to me.
"I'll tell you what's gonna happen tomorrow. Tomorrow, you will sit in the audience with the rest of the guests and you will keep your mouth shut as I will exchange my vows with Grace. You won't speak to anyone, you won't tell anyone about this marriage and you won't make a scene. Can you do that?"
I was completely taken aback by what Nikolai had just said to me. I gripped the car seat as he leisurely reclined back in front of me. My chin trembled but I didn't let a single tear drop down my cheeks. What the hell does that mean?
"Nikolai..." I whispered unbelievably. "I don't understand this, I don't understand you."
"You will..."
"How can you expect me to watch you exchange vows with another woman?"
"I have asked you before, Evangeline. I asked you if you trusted me and you said that you did without a doubt," he breathed out a sigh. "I don't see it."
I fumbled with my fingers that were resting on my lap. "Trusting you one thing but watching you get married to another woman?" I let out a sarcastic laugh, giving my head a shake. "Most girls would expect a honeymoon but I get to see my husband marrying another woman the very next day of our wedding? It was definitely not the wedding of my dreams but this? Can it get even worse?"
A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "You can say it again."
I glared at him, I was in no mood to play around with him. "What?"
"My husband, I liked the sound of that."
"It's not funny, Nikolai."
"Just fucking trust me, Evangeline. How many times do I have to say that to you?"
"I do trust you but not enough to fully give myself to you, not when you expect me to sit there and watch you exchange vows with Grace Russell."
His hands balled into a fist, his jaw clenched as he glared at me. The car came to a halt and I breathed out in relief because I couldn't stand to sit in the same space as him right now.
I opened the car door and stepped out while he did the same from the other side. I stepped up the front stoop and he followed closely behind me.
I pushed open the front door and heard him slamming it shut behind us. And as I was about to step out of the foyer and into the living room, I got slammed into the nearby wall.
I tried to fight him but he was faster as he grabbed my wrists and pinned them above my head. "No one... no one tells me what I can and can not do. If I want to take you to bed tonight, I fucking will," saying that, he stopped to take a deep breath. He then leaned closer and placed his forehead over mine, looking into my tear-filled eyes. "You are my wife now, Evangeline, it's a big fucking difference. I fucking expect you to have my back now."
I sucked in a sharp breath, I could see that it took a lot for him to utter those words. He was being vulnerable, he expected me to become his other half. I squeezed my eyes shut before I opened them and looked into his eyes. I weakly nodded, telling him that I will do my best.
He exhaled loudly through his nose before placing a soft kiss on my lips, it was a small peck, nothing else. He let go of my hands and stepped back, cupping my cheek. "Everything will be just the way you want it to be."
I leaned into his touch before I whispered. "Okay..."
